We have measured the transverse asymmetry AT' in the quasielastic 3He(e,e') process with high precision at Q2 values from 0.1 to 0.6 (GeV/c)2. The neutron magnetic form factor GnM was extracted at Q2 values of 0.1 and 0.2(GeV/c)2 using a nonrelativistic Faddeev calculation which includes both final-state interactions (FSI) and meson-exchange currents (MEC). Theoretical uncertainties due to the FSI and MEC effects were constrained with a precision measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in the threshold region of 3He(e,e'). Exchange bias in coupled magnetic thin films and its accompanying training effect are fundamental interface phenomena with significant impact in spintronic applications. Both effects are well known in heterosystems of ferro- and antiferromagnetic thin films. Here, we report on the dynamic enhancement of the training effect in an exchange coupled bilayer of soft and hard ferromagnetic materials. Training is referred to as a gradual change of the bias field, which evolves upon cycling the soft layer through consecutive hysteresis loops. The authors report on an approach to establish intrinsic polarization properties in bismuth-layered ferroelectric films by piezoelectric coefficient and soft-mode spectroscopy, as well as by a direct polarization–electric field hysteresis. In epitaxially grown (Bi4−xNdx)Ti3O12 (0≤x≤0.73) films, they show that these complementary characterizations can phenomenologically and thermodynamically represent the intrinsic polarization states in (Bi4−xNdxTi3O12 films, and the intrinsic Ps of 67 μC/cm2 is estimated for pure Bi4Ti3O12, superior to 50 μC/cm2 in bulk single crystal. Honey Lake Basin is a large, hydrologically closed valley with two playa lakes that are separated by a low elevation sill. The Basin has a complex hydrogeologic setting, with numerous groundwater flow paths that interact with surface waters and three basic aquifers; shallow, deep, and geothermal. Thirteen flow paths; eleven cold and two thermal, are identified and the geochemical evolution of those paths are characterized by integrating solute chemistry and isotopic data. The chemical flow paths include recharge in either granitoid or volcanic terrains in the Sierra Nevada Range and the Modoc Plateau, respectively. The groundwater then flows through alluvial …

We search for the decays B0 → ρ0 ρ0, B0 → ρ0f0(980), and B0f0(980)f0(980) in a sample of about 384 × 106 Υ (4S)→ BB̅ decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy ℯ+- collider at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Aerial refueling will extend the range, shorten the response times, and extend loiter time of UAVs. The combined data of two Coulomb excitation experiments has verified the purely electromagnetic population of the Kπ = 4+, 6+, 8, and 16+rotational bands in 178Hf via 2≤ν ≤14 K-forbidden transitions, quantifying the breakdown of the K-selection rule with increasing spin in the low-K bands. More than 100 landslides have been mapped along the southeast flank of the Uinta Mountains. Large landslide deposits are up to 4.6 kilometers long and have an area of approximately 5-9 km². Landslide types include multiple and successive rock slumps, debris slumps and debris flows. Most landslides have a main head scarp in the Bishop Conglomerate and the large landslides have many minor scarps. Multiple slump blocks are manifest by repeated transverse ridges and trenches in the head area of some landslides. To do this, JBIs must be ubiquitous -- always accessible, secure and responsive. The present report outlines the results of an integrated mapping project undertaken to provide habitat maps of the shallow Palm Beach County seafloor between the 6m and 35m contours. This study is a continuation of a similar mapping study undertaken in Broward County, and results were produced such that a seamless and fully compatible mapping product is now available for both counties. The study area stretched from 26.4429o (E. Linton Blvd) in the south to 26.9590o (Jupiter Inlet) in the north. Compatibility with other, in particular NOAA, mapping products was also assured. We present photometry of HD 189733 during eight transits of its close-in giant planet, and out-of-transit photometry spanning 2 yr. Using the transit photometry, we determine the stellar and planetary radii and the photometric ephemeris. Outside of transits, there are quasi-periodic flux variations with a 13.4 day period that we attribute to stellar rotation. In combination with previous results, we derive upper limits on the orbital eccentricity and on the true angle between the stellar rotation axis and planetary orbit (as opposed to the angle between the projections of those axes on the sky).

A detailed structural study of Rock Canyon (near Provo, Utah) provides insight into Wasatch Range tectonics and fold-thrust belt kinematics. Excellent exposures along the E-W trending canyon allow the use of digital photography in conjunction with traditional field methods for a thorough analysis of Rock Canyon's structural features. Detailed photomontages and geometric and kinematic analyses of some structural features help to pinpoint deformation mechanisms active during the canyon's tectonic history. The surface composition and chemical environment of LiCoO2, hexagonal LiNiO2, cubic LiNiO2, and the mixed transition metal oxide LiNi0.5Co0.5O2 have been determined by Auger electron and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. While the LiCoO2 surface properties can easily be extrapolated from bulk composition, the nickel-containing materials are less straightforward. Their surface concentration tends to be depleted in lithium relative to that of the bulk and shows an atypical chemical environment for the constituent elements. The Ni 2p XPS photoemission suggests a near “ NiO-like” selvedge through the XPS binding energies …

Let ξ: X j−→Ep−→B be a fibration of simply connected CW complexes of finite type with classifying map h: B→Baut1(X).We study the evaluation subgroup G n (E, X; j)of the fibre inclusion as an invariant of the fibre- homotopy type of ξ. For spherical fibrations, we show the evaluation subgroup may be expressed as an extension of the Gottlieb group of the fibre sphere provided the classifying map h induces the trivial map on homotopy groups. We extend this result after rationalization: We show that the decomposition G∗(E, X ; j)⊗Q=(G∗(X)⊗Q)⊕(π∗(B)⊗Q)is equivalent to the condition(h)Q=0.

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) beam cleanup and SBS piston correction properties are explored. This research measures the beam cleaning and phase-conjugating properties of stimulated Brillouin scattering in an optical fiber. It is highly desirable and important that these errors can be prevented and detected as early as possible.
