The Complex Cubi-Quintic Ginzburg-Landau Equation: Hopf Bifurcations Yielding Traveling Waves, S.C. Mnacas, S. Roy Choudhury Mar 2007

The Complex Cubi-Quintic Ginzburg-Landau Equation: Hopf Bifurcations Yielding Traveling Waves, S.C. Mnacas, S. Roy Choudhury

Publications

In this paper we use a traveling wave reduction or a so{called spatial approxima- tion to comprehensively investigate the periodic solutions of the complex cubic{quintic Ginzburg{Landau equation. The primary tools used here are Hopf bifurcation theory and perturbation theory. Explicit results are obtained for the post{bifurcation periodic orbits and their stability. Generalized and degenerate Hopf bifurcations are also brie y considered to track the emergence of global structure such as homoclinic orbits.

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We use seismic and geodetic data both jointly and separately to constrain coseismic slip from the 12 November 1996 Mw 7.7 and 23 June 2001 Mw 8.5 southern Peru subduction zone earthquakes, as well as two large aftershocks following the 2001 earthquake on 26 June and 7 July 2001. We use all available data in our inversions: GPS, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) from the ERS-1, ERS-2, JERS, and RADARSAT-1 satellites, and seismic data from teleseismic and strong motion stations. Our two-dimensional slip models derived from only teleseismic body waves from South American subduction zone earthquakes with M …

Predicting Argentine Jet Fuel Prices, Juan A. Salaverry Mar 2007

Predicting Argentine Jet Fuel Prices, Juan A. Salaverry

Theses and Dissertations

Oil distillates are considered important elements to accomplish the missions of the Argentine Air Force (AAF). Of all oil products consumed by the AAF, jet fuel is the resource with highest demand and at the end of the day the most expensive support item procured by the Argentine Air Force. Accurate predictions of Argentine jet fuel prices are necessary to improve AAF financial and logistics planning. This thesis presents a systematic, statistical regression approach to forecast Argentine jet fuel prices. The application of this methodology has allowed us to obtain a very useful model that utilizes information available on the …

An Evaluation Of Organizational And Experience Factors Affecting The Perceived Transfer Of U.S. Air Force Basic Combat Skills Training, Shirley D. Crow

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force is in a state of transformation. Due to ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the focus of Basic Military Training is shifting to basic combat skills, or the skills needed to survive and operate in a hostile environment. In this study, basic combat skills training was evaluated using a number of training factors that potentially affect trainees’ perception of training transfer, or their ability to apply the skills they learned in training on the job or in a hostile environment. The analysis used structural equation modeling to evaluate the paths between each of the factors …

On-Demand Key Distribution For Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Daniel F. Graham Mar 2007

On-Demand Key Distribution For Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Daniel F. Graham

Theses and Dissertations

Mobile ad-hoc networks offer dynamic portable communication with little or no infrastructure. While this has many benefits, there are additional shortcomings specific to wireless communication that must be addressed. This research proposes gossip-based on-demand key distribution as a means to provide data encryption for mobile ad-hoc networks. This technique uses message keys to avoid encrypting and decrypting a message at every node. Other optimizations used include secure channel caching and joint rekey messages. The use of gossip makes the scheme robust to node failure. Experimental results show only a 15% increase in end-to-end delay with a node failure rate of …

Stochastic Estimation And Control Of Queues Within A Computer Network, Nathan C. Stuckey Mar 2007

Stochastic Estimation And Control Of Queues Within A Computer Network, Nathan C. Stuckey

Theses and Dissertations

An extended Kalman filter is used to estimate size and packet arrival rate of network queues. These estimates are used by a LQG steady state linear perturbation PI controller to regulate queue size within a computer network. This paper presents the derivation of the transient queue behavior for a system with Poisson traffic and exponential service times. This result is then validated for ideal traffic using a network simulated in OPNET. A more complex OPNET model is then used to test the adequacy of the transient queue size model when non-Poisson traffic is combined. The extended Kalman filter theory is …

Abundance Analysis Of The Extremely Fast Onemg Novae V838 Herculis And V4160 Sagittarii, G J. Schwarz, S N. Shore, S Starrfield, K M. Vanlandingham Mar 2007

Abundance Analysis Of The Extremely Fast Onemg Novae V838 Herculis And V4160 Sagittarii, G J. Schwarz, S N. Shore, S Starrfield, K M. Vanlandingham

Earth & Space Sciences Faculty Publications

V838 Her and V4160 Sgr were two of the fastest classical novae ever observed, exhibiting light curve declines of 2 mag in less than 2 days. Both novae also showed strong neon emission lines, indicative of an outburst occurring on an oxygen-neon-magnesium white dwarf. Being the brighter of the two, V838 Her has an extensive set of X-ray to radio observations obtained during its first year after outburst. V4160 Sgr has a more modest set of ultraviolet and optical spectra, which show it to be similar to V838 Her, not just in its light curve evolution but also in its …

Multi-Robot Fastslam For Large Domains, Choyong G. Koperski Mar 2007

Multi-Robot Fastslam For Large Domains, Choyong G. Koperski

Theses and Dissertations

For a robot to build a map of its surrounding area, it must have accurate position information within the area, and to obtain accurate position information within the area, the robot needs to have an accurate map of the area. This circular problem is the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problem. An efficient algorithm to solve it is FastSLAM, which is based on the Rao-Blackwellized particle filter. FastSLAM solves the SLAM problem for single-robot mapping using particles to represent the posterior of the robot pose and the map. Each particle of the filter possesses its own global map which is …

Performance Evaluation Of Ad Hoc Routing In A Swarm Of Autonomous Aerial Vehicles, Matthew T. Hyland Mar 2007

Performance Evaluation Of Ad Hoc Routing In A Swarm Of Autonomous Aerial Vehicles, Matthew T. Hyland

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the performance of three mobile ad hoc routing protocols in the context of a swarm of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). It is proposed that a wireless network of nodes having an average of 5.1774 log n neighbors, where n is the total number of nodes in the network, has a high probability of having no partitions. By decreasing transmission range while ensuring network connectivity, and implementing multi-hop routing between nodes, spatial multiplexing is exploited whereby multiple pairs of nodes simultaneously transmit on the same channel. The proposal is evaluated using the Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (GPSR), …

Analysis Of Routing Worm Infection Rates On An Ipv4 Network, James Gorsuch Mar 2007

Analysis Of Routing Worm Infection Rates On An Ipv4 Network, James Gorsuch

Theses and Dissertations

Malicious logic, specifically worms, has caused monetary expenditure problems to network users in the past. Worms, like Slammer and Code Red, have infected thousands of systems and brought the Internet to a standstill. This research examines the ability of the original Slammer worm, the Slammer based routing worm proposed by Zou et al, and a new Single Slash Eight (SSE) routing worm proposed by this research to infect vulnerable systems within a given address space. This research investigates the Slammer worm's ability to generate a uniform random IP addresses in a given address space. Finally, a comparison of the speed …

Classifying Failing States, Nathan E. Nysether Mar 2007

Classifying Failing States, Nathan E. Nysether

Theses and Dissertations

The US is heavily involved in the first major war of the 21st Century -- The Global War on Terror (GWOT). As with any militant group, the foundation of the enemy's force is their people. There are two primary strategies for defeating the terrorists and achieving victory in the GWOT. First, we must root out terrorists where they live, train, plan, and recruit and attack them militarily. Second, we must suffocate them by cutting off the supply of new soldiers willing to choose aggression or even death over their current life. This thesis helps to achieve these objectives by applying …

Complete Configuration Space Analysis For Structure Determination Of Symmetric Homo-Oligomers By Nmr, Shobha Potluri Mar 2007

Complete Configuration Space Analysis For Structure Determination Of Symmetric Homo-Oligomers By Nmr, Shobha Potluri

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Symmetric homo-oligomers (protein complexes with similar subunits arranged symmetrically) play pivotal roles in complex biological processes such as ion transport and cellular regulation. Structure determination of these complexes is necessary in order to gain valuable insights into their mechanisms. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an experimental technique used for structural studies of such complexes. The data available for structure determination of symmetric homo-oligomers by NMR is often sparse and ambiguous in nature, raising concerns about existing heuristic approaches for structure determination. We have developed an approach that is complete in that it identifies all consistent conformations, data-driven in that …

Malicious Kgc Attacks In Certificateless Cryptography, Man Ho Au, Jing Chen, Joseph K. Liu, Yi Mu, Duncan S. Wong, Guomin Yang, Guomin Yang Mar 2007

Malicious Kgc Attacks In Certificateless Cryptography, Man Ho Au, Jing Chen, Joseph K. Liu, Yi Mu, Duncan S. Wong, Guomin Yang, Guomin Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Identity-based cryptosystems have an inherent key escrow issue, that is, the Key Generation Center (KGC) always knows user secret key. If the KGC is malicious, it can always impersonate the user. Certificateless cryptography, introduced by Al-Riyami and Paterson in 2003, is intended to solve this problem. However, in all the previously proposed certificateless schemes, it is always assumed that the malicious KGC starts launching attacks (so-called Type II attacks) only after it has generated a master public/secret key pair honestly. In this paper, we propose new security models that remove this assumption for both certificateless signature and encryption schemes. Under …

Valuing Information Technology Infrastructures: A Growth Options Approach, Qizhi Dai, Robert J. Kauffman, Salvatore T. March Mar 2007

Valuing Information Technology Infrastructures: A Growth Options Approach, Qizhi Dai, Robert J. Kauffman, Salvatore T. March

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Decisions to invest in information technology (IT) infrastructure are often made based on an assessment of its immediate value to the organization. However, an important source of value comes from the fact that such technologies have the potential to be leveraged in the development of future applications. From a real options perspective, IT infrastructure investments create growth options that can be exercised if and when an organization decides to develop systems to provide new or enhanced IT capabilities. We present an analytical model based on real options that shows the process by which this potential is converted into business value, …

Digital Support For Abductive Learning In Introductory Computing Courses, Atanas Radenski Mar 2007

Digital Support For Abductive Learning In Introductory Computing Courses, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Students who grew up browsing the Web are skilled in what is usually referred to as abduction, a reasoning process that starts with a set of specific observations and then generates the best possible explanation of those observations. In order to exploit the abduction skills of contemporary students, we have developed digital CS1/2 study packs that promote and support active learning through abduction, i.e., abductive learning. The study packs integrate a variety of digital resources: online self-guided labs, e-texts, tutorial links, sample programs, quizzes, and slides. These online packs stimulate students to learn abductively by browsing, searching, and performing self-guided …

Spatial Variation In Sea Urchins, Fish Predators, And Bioerosion Rates On Coral Reefs Of Belize, Jocelyn Brown-Saracino, Paulette Peckol, H. Allen Curran, Martha L. Robbart

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Although sea urchins are critical for controlling macroalgae on heavily fished coral reefs, high densities threaten reefs, as urchins are also prodigous bioeroders. This study examined urchin population characteristics, bioerosion rates, their fish predators (Labridae), and potential competitors (Scaridae) on unprotected reefs and a reef within a marine protected area (MPA) in the lagoonal regions off Belize. Urchin density (<1 >m-2) and bioerosion rates (∼0.2 kg CaCO3m-2year-1) were lowest and members of the Labridae were the highest (∼20 fish 200 m-3) within the MPA, while several unprotected reefs had higher (∼18-40 m-2) urchin densities, lower Labridae abundances (1-3 fish 200 …

Bounds And Conditions: A Kolob In Our Solar System?, David D. Allred Mar 2007

Bounds And Conditions: A Kolob In Our Solar System?, David D. Allred

Faculty Publications

In 2003, Dialogue ran adjacent essays by two scientists, David Tolman and David Allred. The two Davids had been students together at Princeton, attending the same student ward. Decades after Princeton, Tolman had left Mormonism and Allred had stayed. Their essays are a fascinating juxtaposition. In the course of his piece, David Allred ventured for a few paragraphs into a discussion of the planet Jupiter and its role as a governor and protector in our solar system—a type of Kolob. Although the other author dismissed the topic as “fanciful physics,” my own interest was piqued. I asked Dr. Allred, who …

Precision In Imaging Multivariate Optical Computing, Michael N. Simcock, Michael L. Myrick Mar 2007

Precision In Imaging Multivariate Optical Computing, Michael N. Simcock, Michael L. Myrick

Faculty Publications

Multivariate optical computing (MOC) is a method of performing chemical analysis using a multilayer thin-film structure known as a multivariate optical element (MOE). Recently we have been advancing MOC for imaging problems by using an imaging MOE (IMOE) in a normal-incidence geometry and employing normalization by the 1-norm. There are several important differences between the previously described 45° and the normal-incidence imaging, one of which is the measurement precision due to photon counting. We compare this precision to 45° MOC. We also discuss how MOE models with similar values of standard errors of calibration and prediction and similar gain values …

Modification Of A Capillary For Electrophoresis By Electrostatic Self-Assembly Of An Enzyme For Selective Determination Of The Enzyme Substrate, Stephanie Hooper, Mark Anderson Feb 2007

Modification Of A Capillary For Electrophoresis By Electrostatic Self-Assembly Of An Enzyme For Selective Determination Of The Enzyme Substrate, Stephanie Hooper, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

The integration of a separation capillary for capillary electrophoresis (CE) with an on-column enzyme reaction for selective determination of the enzyme substrate is described. Enzyme immobilization is achieved by electrostatic assembly of poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) followed by adsorption of a mixture of the negatively charged enzyme glucose oxidase (GOx) and anionic poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The reaction of glucose with the GOx produces hydrogen peroxide which migrates the length of the capillary and is detected amperometrically at the capillary outlet. The enzyme reaction occurs during a capillary separation, allowing selective determination of the substrate in complex samples without the need for pre- …

Residence Times And Temporal Variations Of 210Po In Aerosols And Precipitation From Southeastern Michigan, United States, Daphne Mcneary, Mark Baskaran

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

Daughter products of 222Rn (such as 210Pb, half-life = 22.1 years, and 210Po, half-life = 138 days) have been widely used as tracers to determine the removal rates of aerosols as well to obtain analog information on the behavior of other chemical species in the lower atmosphere. To establish the first data set on the depositional fluxes of 210Po in bulk precipitation and concentrations in air samples from the midwestern United States, we measured the depositional fluxes of 210Pb and 210Po in the bulk (wet plus dry) and dry fallout by deploying a rain …

Photometry And Spectroscopy Of 11 Γ Doradus Stars, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel, Stephen M. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have used precise photometric and high-dispersion spectroscopic observations to study 11 γ Doradus stars, 10 of them newly confirmed. Only five of these 11 γ Doradus stars appear to be single; two are primaries of double-lined spectroscopic binaries, one is the secondary of a double-lined binary, two are primaries of visual binaries and, in the case of the double-lined binary (HD 86371), either or both components could be a pulsating γ Doradus star. We have determined a preliminary orbital period of 5.32 days for the double-lined binary HD 41547. Several of the stars show spectroscopic line-profile and low-amplitude radial …

Automatic Composition Of Semantic Web Services Using Process And Data Mediation, Zixin Wu, Ajith H. Ranabahu, Karthik Gomadam, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller

Kno.e.sis Publications

Web service composition has quickly become a key area of research in the services oriented architecture community. One of the challenges in composition is the existence of heterogeneities across independently created and autonomously managed Web service requesters and Web service providers. Previous work in this area either involved significant human effort or in cases of the efforts seeking to provide largely automated approaches, overlooked the problem of data heterogeneities, resulting in partial solutions that would not support executable workflow for real-world problems. In this paper, we present a planning-based approach to solve both the process heterogeneity and data heterogeneity problems. …
