The integrated Public Health Information System (iPHIS) system requires a maximum one hour data latency for reporting and analysis. The existing system uses trigger-based replication technology to replicate data from the source database to the reporting database. The data is transformed into materialized views in an hourly full refresh for reporting. This solution is Central Processing Unit (CPU) intensive and is not scaleable. This paper presents the results of a pilot project which demonstrated that near real-time Extract, Transform and Load (ETL), using conventional ETL process with Change Data Capture (CDC), can replace this existing process to improve performance and …

Several methods exist for increasing the scale of cell culture in the laboratory. While these methods provide significant increases in biomass, they are often prohibitively expensive for many laboratories. We have engineered a small-scale bioreactor with a novel means of introducing oxygen through the catalytic breakdown of hydrogen peroxide using a manganese oxide catalyst. We have also adapted and modified an existing assay for dissolved oxygen to be compatible with culture conditions. In this system we have been able to culture CHO cells at densities of up to 107 cells/mL without the use of automated feedback systems.

The use of combinations of weak learners to learn a dataset has been shown to be better than the use of a single strong learner. In fact, the idea is so successful that boosting, an algorithm combining several weak learners for supervised learning, has been considered to be the best off the shelf classifier. However, some problems still exist, including determining the optimal number of weak learners and the over fitting of data. This paper describes a novel framework for automatic lecture video editing by gesture, posture, and video text recognition. In content analysis, the trajectory of hand movement is tracked and the intentional gestures are automatically extracted for recognition. In addition, head pose is estimated through overcoming the difficulties due to the complex lighting conditions in classrooms. The aim of recognition is to characterize the flow of lecturing with a series of regional focuses depicted by human postures and gestures. A supervised genetic algorithm (SGA) is proposed to solve the quality of service (QoS) routing problems in computer networks. The supervised rules of intelligent concept are introduced into genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve the constraint optimization problem. One of the main characteristics of SGA is its searching space can be limited in feasible regions rather than infeasible regions. The superiority of SGA to other GAs lies in that some supervised search rules in which the information comes from the problems are incorporated into SGA. The authors present partial-ion-yield experiments on the methyl chloride molecule excited in the vicinity of the Cl2p and C1s inner shells. A large number of fragments, cations produced by dissociation or recombination processes, as well as anionic species, have been detected. Although the spectra exhibit different intensity distributions depending on the core-excited atom, general observations include strong site-selective fragmentation along the C–Cl bond axis and a strong intensity dependence of transitions involving Rydberg series on fragment size.

A bright airglow event was observed at Maui, Hawaii, on the night of 11–12 August 2004 with multiple instruments including a Na wind/temperature lidar, an airglow imager, and a mesospheric temperature mapper. The characteristics of this event were investigated with measurements from these instruments. Analysis showed that this event was caused by a large-amplitude, upward-propagating gravity wave with a period of about 4–5 hours and a vertical wavelength of about 20 km, i.e., a ‘‘wall’’ wave. This wall wave induced dramatic changes in temperature (60 K), airglow intensity (doubled in the OH and tripled in the O2 emissions), and Na …

An integrated parabolic lens capable of introducing a diverging effect to the optical mode propagating within the cavity of a tapered laser is proposed and demonstrated. This idea allows broader high-power beams to be generated by shorter cavities. Diverging lenses with etch depths of 0.13 and 0.27 mum are implemented, with 12 (9.5%) and 16.8 mum (13.3%) overall broadening of the near-fields widths measured at 1/e2 intensity. The peak output power as well as the threshold current is found to increase following the lens etching process, confirming the beneficial broadening effect introduced by the diverging lens.

This article reports research that is concerned with pre-service teachers2 working collaboratively in a problem-solving context without teacher involvement. The aim is to focus on the students’ heuristic strategies employed in the solution process while working on two problems in geometry. Two episodes from the dialogues in one group of students with limited mathematical backgrounds have been chosen to illustrate some mathematical movement throughout the group meetings, from working with the first problem to working with the second one. The findings reveal that three categories of strategies, visualising, monitoring, and questioning, play an important role in order to make progress …

The present study outlines a specific three level hierarchy of the cognitive system and especially the relations of specific cognitive and metacognitive processes in mathematics. The emphasis is on the impact of the development of processing efficiency and working memory ability on the development of metacognitive abilities and mathematical performance. We had used instruments measuring pupils´ metacognitive ability, mathematical performance, working memory and processing efficiency. We administered them to 126 pupils (8-11 years old) three times, with breaks of 3-4 months between them. Learning an advanced mathematical concept, limits of functions in this case, is not a linear development equal for all learners. Intentions and abilities influence students’ learning paths and results. Students’ learning developments of limits were studied in terms of concept images (Tall & Vinner, 1981) in the sense that their actions, such as problem solving and reasoning, were considered traces of their mental representations of concepts. High achievers’ developments were compared to low achievers’ developments to for the duration of a semester to reveal differences and similarities.

This study is the outcome of a research that investigated how students who were assigned varying levels of geometric thinking attempted problems requiring some amount of algebraic thinking in geometry. The study reports that students’ thinking in geometry also requires facility with algebra and as such there is a need for a framework that provides a more inclusive view of what constitutes geometric thinking in school mathematics.

Only 1% of the original extent of Florida’s seepage slope habitat remains, with Eglin Air Force Base containing some of the largest tracts. Feral swine damage is one of the greatest threats to this wetland habitat.We conducted a multi-year study to evaluate the impacts of sport hunting and supplemental swine removal on damage to seepage slopes. Prior to initiation of removal in 2003, swine damage to seepage slopes in the portion of the base closed to hunting averaged 25.0%, over twice the 10.9% losses in the portion open to hunting. The mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa (Rafinesque, 1817)), endemic to western North America, is the only extant member of the family Aplodontidae. Limited information on movements and habitat use throughout the species' range is available. We radio-collared 41 mountain beavers to determine home ranges, dispersal, habitat use, and population densities on two managed forest sites in coastal Washington. Both sites were recently harvested for timber. The Donovan site (16.6 ha) was treated with herbicide before seedling planting and the Sylvia site (8.9 ha) was not treated. Bird populations are influenced by a variety of factors at both small and large scales that range from the presence of suitable nesting habitat, predators, and food supplies to climate conditions and land-use patterns. We evaluated the influences of regional climate and land-use variables on wetland breeding birds in the Canada section of Bird Conservation Region 11 (CA-BCR1 I ) , the Prairie Potholes. Abstract. A simply connected topological space X has homotopy Lie algebra π∗(ΩX) ⊗ Q. Following Quillen, there is a connected differential graded free Lie algebra (dgL) called a Lie model, which determines the rational homotopy type of X, and whose homology is isomorphic to the homotopy Lie algebra. We show that such a Lie model can be replaced with one that has a special property we call separated. The homology of a separated dgL has a particular form which lends itself to calculations. 1.

In this dissertation we study the inference of node and edge replacement graph grammars. The approach is based on previous research in frequent isomorphic subgraphs discovery. We extend the search for frequent subgraphs by checking for overlap among the instances of the subgraphs in the input graph. If subgraphs overlap by one node, we propose a node replacement graph grammar production. If subgraphs overlap by two nodes or two nodes and an edge, we propose an edge replacement graph grammar production. As part of a rapid bioassessment project for the state of Georgia, relatively unimpaired reference streams and impaired sites were sampled for biological, chemical and physical parameters, and macroinvertebrates were identified. The metrics, biological, physical and chemical metrics, were selected using Ecological Data Application System Version 3.3.2k (EDAS). Discrimination efficiency and correlations were performed to determine the best metrics that separated impaired streams from reference streams and later on to form the index of stream water quality. Eukaryotes and archaea use two sets of specialized ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) to carry out sequencespecific methylation and pseudouridylation of RNA, the two most abundant types of modifications of cellular RNAs. In eukaryotes, these protein–RNA complexes localize to the nucleolus and are called small nucleolar RNPs (snoRNPs), while in archaea they are known as small RNPs (sRNP). The C/D class of sno(s)RNPs carries out ribose- 20-O-methylation, while the H/ACA class is responsible for pseudouridylation of their RNA targets. Due to the prevalence of digital video camcorders, home videos have become an important part of life-logs of personal experiences. To enable efficient video parsing, a critical step is to automatically extract objects, events and scene characteristics present in videos. This paper addresses the problem of extracting objects from home videos. Automatic detection of objects is a classical yet difficult vision problem, particularly for videos with complex scenes and unrestricted domains. An important service provided by third-party logistics (3PL) firms is to manage the inbound logistics of raw materials and components from multiple suppliers to several manufacturing plants. A key challenge for these 3PL firms is to determine how to coordinate and consolidate the transportation flow, so as to get the best overall logistics performance. One tactic is to establish consolidation hubs that collect shipments from several suppliers, consolidate these shipments, and direct the consolidated shipments to the appropriate manufacturing plant. My research goal is to build large-scale intelligent systems (both single- and multi-agent) that reason with uncertainty in complex, real-world environments. I foresee an integration of such systems in many critical facets of human life ranging from intelligent assistants in hospitals to offices, from rescue agents in large scale disaster response to sensor agents tracking weather phenomena in earth observing sensor webs, and others. It also states the goal and principal objectives for management during the next ten years (2006-2016), along with updated strategies to achieve these objectives. The document succinctly outlines the direction for multiple use management of the Houtman Abrolhos Islands as determined by the Abrolhos Islands Management Advisory Committee (AIMAC). The Committee’s role is to advise the Minister for Fisheries on management of the Abrolhos Islands and the Abrolhos Islands Fish Habitat Protection Area.
