The long delay in recognizing the potentially key role of Fe in coastal marine systems has been in large part because of the complexity of microbial:Fe interactions in seawater. There still is no analytical method for determining biologically available Fe for either prokaryotic or eukaryotic phytoplankton. However, there is evidence that Fe availability to eukaryotic phytoplankton can be regulated by additions of the fungal siderophore desferrioxamine B (DFB) to coastal waters. The DFB-Fe complex not only is unavailable for uptake at significant rates, but also outcompetes the natural organic ligand classes in seawater for Fe. Measurement of DFB-Fe concentrations in …

Banda Forearc Metamorphic Rocks Accreted To The Australian Continental Margin: Detailed Analysis Of The Lolotoi Complex Of East Timor, Carl Eldon Standley

Petrologic, structural and age investigations of the Lolotoi Complex of East Timor indicate that it is part of a group of thin metamorphic klippen found throughout the region that were detached from the Banda forearc and accreted to the NW Australian continental margin during Late Miocene to Present arc-continent collision. Metamorphic rock types are dominated by (in order of greatest to least abundance), greenschist, graphitic phyllite, quartz-mica schist, amphibolite and pelitic schist. Mineral, whole rock, and trace element geochemical analyses of metabasites indicate that protolith compositions are consistent with tholeiitic basalt and basaltic andesite with mixed MORB and oceanic arc …

This study examined the seasonal cycles and regional-scale meteorological controls on the chemical properties of bulk aerosols collected from 1999 to 2004 at Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States. The concentrations of NH4+ and SO42− peaked during summer months. The pattern for aerosol NO3 was more complicated with relatively high median concentrations characterizing spring and summer months, but with major elevated events occurring during fall, winter, and spring. We prove that the focal set generated by the reflection of a point source off a translation invariant surface consists of two sets: a curve and a surface. The focal curve lies in the plane orthogonal to the symmetry direction containing the source, while the focal surface is translation invariant. This is done by constructing explicitly the focal set of the reflected line congruence (2-parameter family of oriented lines in R 3) with the aid of the natural complex structure on the space of all oriented affine lines.

Using the laser photoelectron attachment (LPA) method at an energy width of 1–2 meV, the Br- yield due to dissociative electron attachment to the molecule CH3Br has been measured over the energy range 1–180 meV at a gas temperature of 600 K. The data clearly exhibit the vibrational Feshbach resonance predicted by Wilde et al. (2000 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 33 5479) and associated with the v3 = 4 vibrational level of the C–Br stretch mode in the neutral molecule. We present the first experimental discrimination between the 2ℯ/3 and 4ℯ/3 top quark electric charge scenarios, using top quark pairs (tt̅) produced in pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We use 370 pb-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment and select events with at least one high transverse momentum electron or muon, high transverse energy imbalance, and four or more jets. We discriminate between b- and -quark jets by using the charge and momenta of tracks within the jet cones. The data are consistent with the expected electric …

Study selection Animal studies for interventions with unambiguous evidence of a treatment effect (benefit or harm) in clinical trials: head injury, antifibrinolytics in haemorrhage, thrombolysis in acute ischaemic stroke, tirilazad in acute ischaemic stroke, antenatal corticosteroids to prevent neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, and bisphosphonates to treat osteoporosis.

Prospective cohort studies have provided evidence on longer-term mortality risks of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), but due to their complexity and costs, only a few have been conducted.

By linking monitoring data to the U.S. Medicare system by county of residence, we developed a retrospective cohort study, the Medicare Air Pollution Cohort Study (MCAPS), comprising over 20 million enrollees in the 250 largest counties during 2000-2002. We estimated log-linear regression models having as outcome the age-specific mortality rate for each county and as the main predictor, the average level for the study period 2000. Dynamics Of Condensate Shells: Collective Modes And Expansion, Courtney Lannert, T. C. Wei, S. Vishveshwara

We explore the physics of three-dimensional shell-shaped condensates, relevant to cold atoms in "bubble traps." We study the ground state of the condensate wave function, spherically symmetric collective modes, and expansion properties of such a shell using a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. We find two breathing-type modes with frequencies that are distinct from that of the filled spherical condensate. Upon trap release and subsequent expansion, we find that the system displays self-interference fringes. We estimate characteristic time scales, degree of mass accumulation, three-body loss, and kinetic energy release during expansion for a typical system of Rb87.

Alphaviruses are animal viruses holding great promise for biomedical applications as drug delivery vectors, functional imaging probes, and nanoparticle delivery vesicles because of their efficient in vitro self-assembly properties. However, due to their complex structure, with a protein capsid encapsulating the genome and an outer membrane composed of lipids and glycoproteins, the in-vitro self-assembly of virus-like particles, which have the functional virus coat but carry an artificial cargo, can be challenging. This paper describes a human-in-the-loop motion-based simulator interfaced to hybrid-electric power system hardware both of which were used to measure the duty cycle of a combat vehicle in a virtual simulation environment. The internal circadian rhythms of cells and organisms coordinate their physiological properties to the prevailing 24-h cycle of light and dark on earth. The mechanisms generating circadian rhythms have four defining characteristics: they oscillate endogenously with period close to 24 h, entrain to external signals, suffer phase shifts by aberrant pulses of light or temperature, and compensate for changes in temperature over a range of 10°C or more. We consider a singular stochastic control problem with state constraints that arises in problems of optimal consumption and investment under transaction costs. Numerical approximations for the value function using the Markov chain approximation method of Kushner and Dupuis are studied. The main result of the paper shows that the value function of the Markov decision problem (MDP) corresponding to the approximating controlled Markov chain converges to that of the original stochastic control problem as various parameters in the approximation approach suitable limits. Two-dimensional images carried by optical pulses (2 ns) are delayed by up to 10 ns in a 10 cm cesium vapor cell. By interfering the delayed images with a local oscillator, the transverse phase and amplitude profiles of the images are shown to be preserved. It is further shown that delayed images can be well preserved even at very low light levels, where each pulse contains on average less than one photon.

Measurements of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies by interferometers offer several advantages over single-dish observations. The formalism for analyzing interferometer CMB data is well developed in the flat-sky approximation, which is valid for small fields of view. As the area of sky is increased to obtain finer spectral resolution, this approximation needs to be relaxed. We extend the formalism for CMB interferometry, including both temperature and polarization, to mosaics of observations covering arbitrarily large areas of the sky, with each individual pointing lying within the flat-sky approximation. Gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations at very high energies (VHE; E > 100 GeV) can impose tight constraints on some GRB emission models. Many GRB afterglow models predict a VHE component similar to that seen in blazars and plerions, in which the GRB spectral energy distribution has a double-peaked shape extending into the VHE regime. VHE emission coincident with delayed X-ray flare emission has also been predicted. GRB follow-up observations have had high priority in the observing program at the Whipple 10 m gamma-ray telescope, and GRBs will continue to be high-priority targets as the next-generation observatory, VERITAS, comes online. We present new observations with the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope of the solid-CO2 absorption feature near 15 μm in the spectra of eight field stars behind the Taurus complex of dark clouds. Solid CO2 is detected in six lines of sight. New results are combined with previous data to investigate the correlation of CO2 column density with those of other major ice constituents (H2O and CO) and with extinction. CO2 is shown to display a "threshold extinction" effect, i.e., a minimum extinction (A0 = 4.3 ± 1.0 mag) required for detection, behavior similar to that previously …

Compressive experiments were performed on square (160 mm × 160 mm) prismatic specimens of columnar-grained, S2 freshwater ice, biaxially loaded across the columns at −10°C. The work focused on brittle behavior, achieved by deforming the specimens at an applied strain rate of 4.5 ± 1.2 × 10 3s 1 in the direction of shortening. The results show that the specimen thickness (25–150 mm) has no detectable effect on the terminal failure strength of the ice. Likewise, the strength of the ice when loaded under proportional loading, where the minor stress varies during the test, was similar to that when loaded …

We recently reported that β-peptides can form discrete hetero-oligomers in aqueous solution. Here we describe the structure of such an oligomer as determined by X-ray crystallography. The structure of Zwit-1F reveals a homo-octamer of two cupped “hands” composed of both parallel and antiparallel 314-helices. The core of the assembly is composed entirely of solvent-excluded β3-homoleucine residues. The Zwit-1F assembly shares many of the physical characteristics of natural proteins.

Physics

We present the first study of the energy dependence of pt angular correlations inferred from event-wise mean transverse momentum pt fluctuations in heavy ion collisions. We compare our large-acceptance measurements at CM energies , 62.4, 130 and 200 GeV to SPS measurements at 12.3 and 17.3 GeV. pt angular correlation structure suggests that the principal source of pt correlations and fluctuations is minijets (minimum-bias parton fragments). We observe a dramatic increase in correlations and fluctuations from SPS to RHIC energies, increasing linearly with from the onset of observable jet-related pt fluctuations near 10 GeV.
