Variational Iteration Method - Some Recent Results And New Interpretations, Ji-Huan He

This paper is an elementary introduction to the concepts of variational iteration method. First, the main concepts in variational iteration method, such as general Lagrange multiplier, restricted variation, correction functional, are explained heuristically. Subsequently, the solution procedure is systematically addressed, in particular, for nonlinear oscillators. Particular attention is paid throughout the paper to give an intuitive grasp for the method. The main motivation is to put things together in a convenient form for later reference and systematic use. The dynamic feature of high buildings is discussed in the present study with the application of ANSYS，the large finite element analysis software，aimed at the analysis of dynamic response of high buildings．Based on the case of a 15一story-building，a model of beam and shell 3-D finite element structure is built and the frequency of structure and the mode of vibration are computed in the study；furthermore，the structural dynamic response is discussed under different seismic waves with the use of the history analysis method．The results show that the more intense the seismic wave is，the bigger is the dynamic response of the buildings．The information can …

Proteomics holds the promise of evaluating global changes in protein expression and post-translational modificaiton in response to environmental stimuli. However, difficulties in achieving cellular anatomic resolution and extracting specific types of proteins from cells have limited the efficacy of these techniques. Laser capture microdissection has provided a solution to the problem of anatomical resolution in tissues. New extraction methodologies have expanded the range of proteins identified in subsequent analyses. This review will examine the application of laser capture microdissection to proteomic tissue sampling, and subsequent extraction of these samples for differential expression analysis. We compare various one-sided confidence limits for the odds ratio in a 2x2 table. The first group of limits relies on first order asymptotic approximations and includes limits based on the (signed) likelihood ratio, score and Wald statistics. The second group of limits is based on the conditional tilted hypergeometric distribution, with and without mid-P correction. All these limits have poor unconditional coverage properties and so we apply the general transformation of Buehler (1957) to obtain limits which are unconditionally exact. For a correlated 2x2 table where the (01) cell is empty by design, the parameter of interest is typically the ratio of the probability of secondary response conditional on primary response to the probability of primary response, also known as a risk ratio. It is common to test whether or not the risk ratio equals one. One method of obtaining an exact P-value is to maximise the tail probability of the test statistic over the nuisance parameter. It is argued that better results are obtained by first replacing the nuisance parameter by its profile estimate in the calculation of its …

We introduce the vacillating voter model in which each voter consults two neighbors to decide its state, and changes opinion if it disagrees with either neighbor. This irresolution leads to a global bias toward zero magnetization. In spatial dimension $d>1$, anti-coarsening arises in which the linear dimension $L$ of minority domains grows as $t^{1/(d+1)}$. One consequence is that the time to reach consensus scales exponentially with the number of voters.

Locating sinkholes in Pinellas County, Florida, is confounded by the presence of a cover of Quaternary sediments that mute the surface appearance of these sinkholes. As a first step in addressing the sinkhole hazard in the county, we analysed aerial photographs from 1926 and 1995 that covered the entire county. We digitized all identifiable sinkholes in each set of photographs in a GIS (Geographical Information System) using a set of criteria established to differentiate between karst depressions and depressions resulting from other geological processes. The 1926 photographs, although of low quality, helped to establish a baseline prior to urbanization. The …

In May of 2006, nine American scientists and cavers from the Karst Research Group at the University of South Florida traveled to western Romania to attend and present at an international conference on records of climate change in caves in the historic Roman town of Baile Hurculane. The conference, co-sponsored by the “Emil Racoviţă” Speleological Institute of Romania and the Karst Waters Institute, drew more than 100 experts in the field of climate change and karst, and was a wonderful time spent alongside the thermal springs and Austro-Hungarian bathhouses nestled within the massive limestone canyon of the Cerna River. Everglades National Park encompasses 1.5 million acres of grassland glades, tree islands, cypress strands, and mangrove marshes and is world renowned for natural vistas and wonders at the surface. The cave and karst resources in this park, however, are little known even though much of the park is underlain by limestone. In a recent communication to the authors, Alan Cressler (U.S. Geological Survey, written communication, 2006) described his visit to Palma Vista Cave in Everglades National Park last November that he originally explored and described over 13 years ago (Cressler, 1993).

Environmental site investigations often involve the collection and analysis of hundreds of samples producing data sets that contain thousands of data points, which are difficult and time consuming to analyze. Consequently, investigators often focus on key surrogate parameters for site characterization and remedial action planning and assessment, which results in a large portion of the data collected remaining unused. This study presents the application of principal component analysis (PCA) as an efficient statistical technique to examine large environmental data sets through highlighting patterns in a reduced-variable space. Materials based on polyanionic para-sulfonato-calix[ 4] arene and tetraphenylphosphonium (Ph4P+) or benzyltriphenylphosphonium (BzPh(3)P(+)) cations are built up via partial inclusion and extensive phenyl embracing in association with trivalent cations (Yb3+, Gd3+ and Er3+). The crystalline materials have layered structures and feature negatively-charged channels propagating through the solids.

Michael Wheeler: Reconstructing The Cognitive World: The Next Step, Leslie Marsh

Michael Wheeler is the latest in a new wave of philosophical theorists that fall within a loose coalition of anti-representationalism (or anti-Cartesianism): Dynamical –, Embodied –, Extended –, Distributed –, and Situated –, theories of cognition (DEEDS an apt acronym). Against this background, cognition for Wheeler is, or should be, a more ecumenical concept. This ecumenical approach would still be amenable to making theoretical distinctions, the central one being the notion of offline and online styles of intelligence, a distinction that makes conceptual space for another closely related notion, that of propositional knowledge (knowing that) and tacit knowledge (knowing how).

Introduction: EMS protocols outlining when to attempt and terminate resuscitation for non-traumatic out-of- hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) vary substantially across North America. The ROC Epistry is a prospective population based cohort study with uniform Utstein-style data definitions from 11 sites in North America. The purpose of this study was to compare site variation in EMS treatment and transport percentages within the ROC Epistry. We also examined the differences in overall survival in relation to the presence of ROSC prior to transport. Investigators need good statistical tools for the initial planning and for the ongoing monitoring of clinical trials. In particular, they need to carefully consider the accrual rate - how rapidly patients are being recruited into the clinical trial. A slow accrual decreases the likelihood that the research will provide results at the end of the trial with sufficient precision (or power) to make meaningful scientific inferences. In this paper, we present a method for predicting accrual. Using a Bayesian framework we combine prior information with the information known up to a monitoring point to obtain a prediction.
