Planar Hall Effect In Epitaxial Thin Films Of Magnetite, Y. Bason, L. Klein, H. Q. Wang, J. Hoffman, X. Hong, V. E. Henrich, C. H. Ahn

We measured the planar Hall effect (PHE) of magnetite (Fe3O4) films between 150 and 350 K. The PHE was measured both with a constant magnetic field rotating in the plane of the sample and in a remanent state after applying a field in specific directions. The PHE amplitude decreases with temperature; however, it changes little between 300 and 350 K. The remanent PHE signal is as high as 10 V/A, larger than previously observed in manganite films. The purpose of this project was to analyze six companies in various industries that are currently using systems, applications, and products in data processing (SAP)'s R/3. It outlines the history of SAP and gives background on the companies including what they used before R/3, why they chose R/3, and some of the challenges involved with the changing over to R/3. The companies that were analyzed are Allegran Pharmaceuticals, Pacific Communications, Varian Incorporated, Northop-Grumman, Sempra Energy, and Goodrich. A comparison of the companies is done along with analysis on strategic motivators behind the change to R/3.

Irradiation of a planar solid by an intense laser pulse leads to fast electron acceleration and hard x-ray production. We have investigated whether this high field production of fast electrons can be controlled by introducing dielectric spheres of well-defined size on the target surface. We find that the presence of spheres with a diameter slightly larger than half the laser wavelength leads to Mie enhancements of the laser field which, accompanied by multipass stochastic heating of the electrons, leads to significantly enhanced hard x-ray yield and temperature.

In modern backgammon, it is advantageous to know the chances each player has of winning, and to be able to compute the chances without the aid of calculators or pencil and paper. A simple model of backgammon is used to approximate those chances, and a readily computable and sufficiently accurate approximation of that is developed. From there, the model is compared to simulated backgammon games, and the previous approximation is modified to fit the real data.

Optimistic replication provides high data availability in the presence of network outages. Although widely deployed, this relaxed consistency model introduces concurrent updates, whose behavior is poorly understood due to the vast state space.

This paper introduces the notion of permuted states to eliminate system states that are redundant and unreachable, which can constitute the majority of states (4069 out of 4096 for four replicas). With the aid of permuted states, we are for the first time able to construct analytical models beyond the two-replica case. It is known that a beneficial cancer treatment approach for a single patient often involves the administration of more than one type of therapy. The question of how best to combine multiple cancer therapies, however, is still open. In this study, we investigate the theoretical interaction of three treatment types (two biological therapies and one chemotherapy) with a growing cancer, and present an analysis of an optimal control strategy for administering all three therapies in combination. Context. Spectropolarimetry of AGNs is a powerful tool for studying the structure and kinematics of the inner regions of quasars. Aims. We wish to investigate the effects of various AGN scattering region geometries on the polarized flux. Methods. We introduce a new, publicly available Monte Carlo radiative transfer code, stokes, which models polarization induced by scattering off free electrons and dust grains. We model a variety of regions in AGNs. Results. We find that the shape of the funnel of the dusty torus has a significant impact on the polarization efficiency. Hierarchical structure of connective and calcified tissues from the macro- to nanoscale level determines the mechanical and biological functionality of biological materials and has been the focus of numerous recent studies. Further progress in this field requires development of microscopic techniques capable of probing materials properties, including local composition, crystallographic orientation, and mechanical properties on the nanometer-length scale. Here, we describe a piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) approach to high-resolution imaging of biological systems, based on detection of the local piezoelectric response. Recent interest in the technological potential of nitride-based semiconductors has led to the development and commercialization of a wide range of electronic devices. The nanoscale investigation of the electric properties of III-nitride thin films, bulk crystals, and heterostructures is of considerable interest for determining how interfaces, defects, and inversion domain boundaries affect device performance. This chapter describes the principles, theoretical background, recent developments, and applications of a local probe-based technique for nondestructive highresolution ferroelectric domain imaging and manipulation-piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). This technique has proven to be a powerful tool for the characterization of ferroelectric thin films, ceramics, and single crystals. Recent advances in application of PFM for studying a mechanism of polarization reversal at the nanoscale, domain dynamics, degradation effects, and size-dependent phenomena in ferroelectrics are reviewed in detail. Examples of using PFM for the characterization of various polar materials such as ferroelectric films, piezoelectric semiconductors, and ferroelectric relaxors are given.

The magnetism of quench-condensed Ru and Rh impurities and metal films on Ag(100) and Pt(997) has been studied using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In the coverage range between 0.22 and 2.0 ML, no dichroic signal was detected at the M3,2 absorption edges of Ru on Ag(100) at a temperature of 5 K in the presence of an applied magnetic field. The same was found for coverages between 0.12 and 0.5 ML of Rh on Ag(100) and Pt(997). When a gun is fired, characteristic markings on the cartridge and projectile of a bullet are produced. Over thirty different features can be distinguished from observing these marks, which in combination produce a "fingerprint" for identification of a firearm. ln this paper, through the use of hierarchial neural networks a firearm identification system based on cartridge case images is proposed. We focus on the cartridge case identification of rim-fire mechanism. We investigated the effects of season and weather on the winter roosting behavior of American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) in central Iowa from January through March 2006. The peak number of birds recorded at a roost in Ames, Story County was 9,000+ in early February, and the number of individuals entering the roost decreased through February and March. Crows tended to enter the roost later in the day as winter neared completion. High wind speed and low light intensity caused individual to enter the roost earlier in the day.
