Search For Production Of Single Top Quarks Via Tcg And Tug Flavor-Changing-Neutral-Current Couplings, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration
Gregory Snow Publications
We search for the production of single top quarks via flavor-changing-neutral-current couplings of a gluon to the top quark and a charm (c) or up (u) quark. We analyze 230 pb-1 of lepton + jets data from pp̅ collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe no significant deviation from standard model predictions, and hence set upper limits on the anomalous coupling parameters Kgc/ Λ and Kgu/ Λ, where Kg define the strength of tcg and tug couplings, and Λ defines the scale of new physics. …
Correlation Of The Highest-Energy Cosmic Rays With Nearby Extragalactic Objects, J. Abraham, Gregory Snow, Pierre Auger Collaboration
Correlation Of The Highest-Energy Cosmic Rays With Nearby Extragalactic Objects, J. Abraham, Gregory Snow, Pierre Auger Collaboration
Gregory Snow Publications
Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during the past 3.7 years, we demonstrated a correlation between the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energy above 6 × 1019 electron volts and the positions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) lying within ~75 megaparsecs. We rejected the hypothesis of an isotropic distribution of these cosmic rays with at least a 99% confidence level from a prescribed a priori test. The correlation we observed is compatible with the hypothesis that the highest-energy particles originate from nearby extragalactic sources whose flux has not been substantially reduced by interaction with the cosmic …

Microwave Spectra And Ab Initio Studies Of Ar-Propane And Ne-Propane Complexes: Structure And Dynamics, Karen I. Peterson, David Pullman, Wei Lin, Andrea J. Minei, Stewart E. Novick
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Microwave spectra in the 7-26 MHz region have been measured for the van der Waals complexes, Ar-C H3 C H2 C H3, Ar- C13 H3 C H2 C H3, Ne20 -C H3 C H2 C H3, and Ne22 -C H3 C H2 C H3. Both a - and c -type transitions are observed for the Ar-propane complex. The c -type transitions are much stronger indicating that the small dipole moment of the propane (0.0848 D) is aligned perpendicular to the van der Waals bond axis. While the 42 transition lines observed for the primary argon complex are well fitted to …
If Larvae Were Smart: A Simple Model For Optimal Settlement Behavior Of Competent Larvae, Robert J. Toonen, Andrew J. Tyre
If Larvae Were Smart: A Simple Model For Optimal Settlement Behavior Of Competent Larvae, Robert J. Toonen, Andrew J. Tyre
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Much research has been done on larval settlement cues. Rather than having simple fixed responses to constant environmental stimuli, it seems likely that settlement decisions made by individual larvae should vary depending on the individual and the conditions under which it encounters that cue. Here, we present a simple stochastic dynamic programming model that explores the conditions under which larvae may maximize their lifetime fitness by accepting lower quality habitat rather than continuing to search for superior habitat. Our model predicts that there is a relatively narrow range of parameter values over which larval selectivity among habitat types changes dramatically …

Improved Photometric Calibrations For Red Stars Observed With The Sdss Photometric Telescope, James R. A. Davenport, John J. Bochanski, Kevin R. Covey, Suzanne L. Hawley, Andrew A. West, Doanld P. Schneider
Physics & Astronomy
We present a new set of photometric transformations for red stars observed with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) 0.5 m Photometric Telescope (PT) and the SDSS 2.5 m telescope at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico. Nightly PT observations of US Naval Observatory standards are used to determine extinction corrections and calibration terms for SDSS 2.5 m photometry. Systematic differences between the PT and native SDSS 2.5 m ugriz photometry require conversions between the two systems which have previously been undefined for the reddest stars. By matching ~43,000 stars observed with both the PT and SDSS 2.5 m, …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Chiral Conjugated Materials, Andrzej Rajca, Makoto Miyasaka
Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Chiral Conjugated Materials, Andrzej Rajca, Makoto Miyasaka
Andrzej Rajca Publications
Chirality is increasingly important in the design of organic π-conjugated materials. One of the aspects of the design involves optimization of achiral properties through the introduction of chirality. In this context, the inherent three-dimensional character of chirality and the control of intermolecular interactions associated with diastereomeric recognition provide a versatile handle for the optimization of supramolecular structures, film morphology and liquid crystalline order of π-conjugated polymers and oligomers in three dimensions. These inherently achiral properties have an impact on optoelectronic coupling, which may affect the fabrication of light-emitting diodes, field effect transistors, photodiodes, photovoltaic cells, fluorescent sensors and other devices. …

Search For A Higgs Boson Produced In Association With A Z Boson In Pp̅ Collisions, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow
Gregory Snow Publications
We describe a search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass of 105 GeV/c2 to 145 GeV/c2 in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 450 pb-1 collected with the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p̅p collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The Higgs boson is required to be produced in association with a Z boson, and the Z boson is required to decay to either electrons or muons with the Higgs boson decaying to a b̅b pair. The data are well described by the expected background, leading to …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
We assessed the diversity and phylogeny of Saprolegniaceae on amphibian eggs from the Pacific Northwest, with particular focus on Saprolegnia ferax, a species implicated in high egg mortality. We identified isolates from eggs of six amphibians with the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 5.8S gene regions and BLAST of the GenBank database. We identified 68 sequences as Saprolegniaceae and 43 sequences as true fungi from at least nine genera. Our phylogenetic analysis of the Saprolegniaceae included isolates within the genera Saprolegnia, Achlya and Leptolegnia. Our phylogeny grouped S. semihypogyna with Achlya rather than with the Saprolegnia reference …
Interactive Thin Shells – A Model Interface For The Analysis Of Physically-Based Animation, James Skorupski, Zoë J. Wood, Alex Pang
Interactive Thin Shells – A Model Interface For The Analysis Of Physically-Based Animation, James Skorupski, Zoë J. Wood, Alex Pang
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Realism has always been a goal in computer graphics. However, the algorithms involved in mimicking the physical world are often complex, abstract, and sensitive to changes in experimental parameters. We present an interface to a physically-based algorithm, a thin shell animation, which focuses on visualization, experimentation, and control. Through the use of dynamic surface coloring, abstract visual cues, robust user interaction, and full control over the algorithm parameters, our system facilitates experimentation and the process of discovery. The system is targeted at enhancing the user’s learning experience by clarifying interactions between various components of many physically-based animations.
An Environmental Assessment Of Little Black Lake, Alan D. Steinman, Mary Ogdahl, Carl Ruetz
An Environmental Assessment Of Little Black Lake, Alan D. Steinman, Mary Ogdahl, Carl Ruetz
Scientific Technical Reports
A limnological survey was conducted of Little Black Lake and its tributaries during summer 2007 by researchers at the Annis Water Resources Institute of Grand Valley State University. Water quality, sediment composition, and phytoplankton, macrophyte, and fish abundance and composition were analyzed. In general, the water quality of both the inflows to, and Little Black Lake itself, was good. Nutrient concentrations occasionally exceeded existing guidelines, but no systemic problems were detected. Phosphorus concentrations did increase during stormflow conditions, but this is typical and concentrations were not considered excessive. One site in the lake had very high sediment phosphorus concentrations. Because …

Genotype/Haplotype Tagging Methods And Their Validation, Jun Zhang
Genotype/Haplotype Tagging Methods And Their Validation, Jun Zhang
Computer Science Theses
This study focuses how the MLR-tagging for statistical covering, i.e. either maximizing average R2 for certain number of requested tags or minimizing number of tags such that for any non-tag SNP there exists a highly correlated (squared correlation R2 > 0.8) tag SNP. We compare with tagger, a software for selecting tags in hapMap project. MLR-tagging needs less number of tags than tagger in all 6 cases of the given test sets except 2. Meanwhile, Biologists can detect or collect data only from a small set. So, this will bring a problem for scientists that the estimates accuracy of tag SNPs …
A Communications Policy Perspective On Ctc Sustainability In Regional Australia: Commercial Viability And Social Good, William Tibben
A Communications Policy Perspective On Ctc Sustainability In Regional Australia: Commercial Viability And Social Good, William Tibben
Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)
Community Technology Centers (CTCs) seek to provide regional communities with access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) and broadband services. The focus of this paper is on developing sustainability in such CTCs in contexts that are often challenged by economic decline. An exploration of current communications policy is undertaken to better understand the provision of these equity initiatives. Using Australian legislation for telecommunications and broadcasting, the paper provides a framework to understand sustainability in CTCs. Out of this analysis a more detailed understanding of sustainability is advanced.

We determine rapidity asymmetry in the production of charged pions, protons, and antiprotons for large transverse momentum (pT) for d+Au collisions at sNN−−−√=200 GeV. The rapidity asymmetry is defined as the ratio of particle yields at backward rapidity (Au beam direction) to those at forward rapidity (d beam direction). The identified hadrons are measured in the rapidity regions |y|

Organization And Management Of The Sead Help Desk, Ann Evans Durbin
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
ARNe (Regis University Academic Research Network Enterprise), is the graduate student run and managed intranet which is organized as an IT company. The operating structure is based upon a Service Oriented Architecture where each student is involved in an operating portion of the network. New students participating in the SEAD practicum are required to work the ARNe help desk as a requirement of their project. They are expected to login to Track-It! on a daily basis and check for new tickets in the queue. The tickets are submitted by students as well as faculty. Without having a defined "walk through" …

The Librarian As Hacker, Getting More From Google, R Philip Reynolds
Librarian and Staff Publications
This paper will cover four areas. First it will discuss the research habits of search engine users and some of the problems with these habits. Then it will discuss librarians' use of search engines. Here we encounter the real question: Do we do much better? Can we use a search engines to their full potential? When needed, can we hack an engine to make it perform beyond its intended function? Can we use a clever workaround to solve a problem? Or are we on a level playing field with our patrons once we get outside traditional database searching? Google currently …

Measurement Of The ΛB0 Lifetime Using Semileptonic Decays, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We report a measurement of the Λb0 lifetime using a sample corresponding to 1:3 fb-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment in 2002–2006 during run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The Λb0 baryon is reconstructed via the decay Λb0 → μν Λ c+X. Using 4437 ± 329 signal candidates, we measure the Λb0 lifetime to be τ(Λb0) = 1.290-0.110+0.119 (stat) -0.091+0.087(syst) ps, which is among the most precise measurements in semileptonic Λb0 decays. This result is in …

Uncertainty As The Source Of Knowledge Transfer Opportunity, Alex Dekhtyar, Jane Huffman Hayes, Judy Goldsmith
Uncertainty As The Source Of Knowledge Transfer Opportunity, Alex Dekhtyar, Jane Huffman Hayes, Judy Goldsmith
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Uncertainty creeps into the software development process in many ways, shapes and forms. In the early stages of software development, key sources of uncertainty are the human stakeholders who help formulate the requirements of the software product. An added layer of uncertainty is inherent as requirements analysts have to deal with subjective, and often conflicting, estimates that humans make, estimates that may significantly affect both the software development process and the eventual software product. Our position is two-fold. We stipulate that in situations where analysts (and later developers) have to deal with human evaluations of uncertainty, special methods and procedures …

Structure And Thermophysical Properties Of Single-Wall Si Nanotubes, Xinwei Wang, Zhen Huang, Tao Wang, Yuk Wai Tang, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation based on the environment-dependent interatomic potential is carried out to explore the structure, atomic energy distribution, and thermophysical properties of single-wall Si nanotubes (SWSNTs). The unique structure of SWSNTs leads to a wider range energy distribution than crystal Si (c-Si), and results in a bond order in the range of 4.8~5. The thermal conductivity of SWSNTs is much smaller than that of bulk Si, and shows significantly slower change with their characteristic size than that of Si films. Out of the three types of SWSNTs studied in this work, pentagonal SWSNTs have the …
Biomass And Biofuels In Maine: Estimating Supplies For Expanding The Forest Products Industry, Jonathan Rubin, Kate Dickerson, Jacob Kavkewitz
Biomass And Biofuels In Maine: Estimating Supplies For Expanding The Forest Products Industry, Jonathan Rubin, Kate Dickerson, Jacob Kavkewitz
Energy & the Environment
This paper estimates the renewable energy potential of Maine’s forest resources, and how much energy these resources could potentially provide the state. Using the most recent state-specific data available, and a methodology similar to the Billion Tons Report, we find that ethanol production from Maine’s forest residues could potentially provide 18% of Maine’s transportation (gasoline) fuels with a fermentation wood to ethanol process. Making Fischer-Tropsch diesel (F-T diesel) using forest residues can replace 39% of Maine’s petro-diesel consumption. Actual levels of biofuels that can be produced will depend on conversion factors and forestry residue removals that are subject to uncertainty.

Elastic Uplift In Southeast Greenland Due To Rapid Ice Mass Loss, Shfaqat A. Khan, John Wahr, Leigh A. Stearns, Gordon S. Hamilton, Tonie Van Dam, Kristine M. Larson, Olivier Francis
Earth Science Faculty Scholarship
The rapid unloading of ice from the southeastern sector of the Greenland ice sheet between 2001 and 2006 caused an elastic uplift of similar to 35 mm at a GPS site in Kulusuk. Most of the uplift results from ice dynamic-induced volume losses on two nearby outlet glaciers. Volume loss from Helheim Glacier, calculated from sequential digital elevation models, contributes about similar to 16 mm of the observed uplift, with an additional similar to 5 mm from volume loss of Kangerdlugssuaq Glacier. The remaining uplift signal is attributed to significant melt-induced ice volume loss from the ice sheet margin along …

Sedimentology And Stratigraphic Architecture Of The Late Permian Betts Creek Beds, Queensland, Australia, Jonathan P. Allen, Christopher R. Fielding
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The Late Permian Betts Creek Beds form a succession of coal-bearing alluvial-coastal plain sediments in a basin marginal setting within the northeastern Galilee Basin, Queensland, Australia. The unit is ~ 50–60 m in thickness at Porcupine Creek National Park where outcrop is laterally continuous for several kilometers. Eight facies have been identified within the formation and can be grouped into 2 facies associations: (A) channel deposits and (B) floodbasin deposits. The channel association consists of conglomerate (A1) and trough cross-bedded multistorey sandstone facies (A2), both interpreted as deposits of low-sinuosity river systems, tidally influenced fluvial channels (A3), interbedded sandstone and …

Time-Series Intervention Analysis Using Itsacorr: Fatal Flaws, Bradley E. Huitema, Joseph W. Mckean, Sean Laraway
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The ITSACORR method (Crosbie, 1993, 1995) is evaluated for the analysis of two-phase interrupted time-series designs. It is shown that each component of the ITSACORR framework (including the structural model, the design matrix, the autocorrelation estimator, the ultimate parameter estimation scheme, and the inferential method) contains fatal flaws.

A Comparison Of Procedures For The Analysis Of Multivariate Repeated Measurements, Lisa M. Lix, Anita M. Lloyd
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Three procedures for analyzing within-subjects effects in multivariate repeated measures designs are compared when group covariances are heterogeneous: the multiple regression model (MRM) with a structured covariance, Johansen’s (1980) procedure, and the multivariate Brown and Forsythe (1974) procedure. A preliminary likelihood ratio test of a Kronecker product covariance structure is sensitive to sample size and derivational assumption violations. Error rates of the procedures are generally well-controlled except when the distribution is skewed. The MRM procedure displayed few power advantages over the other procedures.

Relative Pareto Minimizers To Multiobjective Problems: Existence And Optimality Conditions, Truong Q. Bao, Boris S. Mordukhovich
Mathematics Research Reports
In this paper we introduce and study enhanced notions of relative Pareto minimizers to constrained multiobjective problems that are defined via several kinds of relative interiors of ordering cones and occupy intermediate positions between the classical notions of Pareto and weak Pareto efficiency/minimality. Using advanced tools of variational analysis and generalized differentiation, we establish the existence of relative Pareto minimizers to general multiobjective problems under a refined version of the subdifferential Palais-Smale condition for set-valued mappings with values in partially ordered spaces and then derive necessary optimality conditions for these minimizers (as well as for conventional efficient and weak efficient …
