Rayleigh Number In A Stability Problem For A Micropolar Fluid, Ioana Florica Dragomirescu Jan 2007

Rayleigh Number In A Stability Problem For A Micropolar Fluid, Ioana Florica Dragomirescu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Approximate numerical evaluations of the Rayleigh number are obtained for a stability problem of thermal convection in a heat-conducting micropolar fluid layer between two rigid boundaries [7]. The influences of all the physical parameters on the values of the Rayleigh number are studied. Also, approximate neutral curves and neutral surfaces are represented in various parameters spaces.

Extreme Points Of Certain Subsets Of Hermitian Elements In Banach Algebras, Gerd Herzog, Christoph Schmoeger Jan 2007

Extreme Points Of Certain Subsets Of Hermitian Elements In Banach Algebras, Gerd Herzog, Christoph Schmoeger

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We consider the real Banach spaces H(A) of all hermitian elements of a complex Banach algebra A. We prove that if an even power of a \in N(A) is hermitian, then a is an extreme point of the unit ball of H(A) if and only if a^2 = 1. Moreover, if an odd power of a \in H(A) is hermitian and a is an extreme point of the unit ball of H(A), then a^3 = a.

Higher Order Generalization Of Positive Linear Operators Defined By A Class Of Borel Measures, Oktay Duman Jan 2007

Higher Order Generalization Of Positive Linear Operators Defined By A Class Of Borel Measures, Oktay Duman

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In the present paper, we introduce a sequence of linear operators, which is a higher order generalization of positive linear operators defined by a class of Borel measures studied in [2]. Then, using the concept of A-statistical convergence we obtain some approximation results which are stronger than the aspects of the classical approximation theory.

Closure Of Minimal Extensions, M. El Hajoui, A. Miri Jan 2007

Closure Of Minimal Extensions, M. El Hajoui, A. Miri

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let R be a commutative ring with a unit and M an R-module. In this paper we give a comparison between the F-closure in M of an R-submodule having a minimal extension and the closure of this minimal extension for the same Gabriel topology defined on the ring R. If J(R) \in F we prove that both closures are the same. Moreover, if R is Artinian or semi-simple then the converse also holds.

The Generalized Hyers--Ulam--Rassias Stability Of A Cubic Functional Equation, Abbas Najati Jan 2007

The Generalized Hyers--Ulam--Rassias Stability Of A Cubic Functional Equation, Abbas Najati

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we obtain the general solution and the generalized Hyers--Ulam--Rassias stability for a cubic functional equation f(mx+y)+f(mx-y)=mf(x+y)+mf(x-y)+2(m^3-m)f(x) for a positive integer m \geq 1.

Locally Finite Simple Moufang Loops, J. I. Hall Jan 2007

Locally Finite Simple Moufang Loops, J. I. Hall

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A Moufang loop is a binary system that satisfies a particular weak form of the associative law. Doro and Glauberman observed that there is a direct connection between simple Moufang loops and simple groups with triality. Using this correspondence, Liebeck proved that nonassociative finite simple Moufang loops arise from split octonion algebras over finite fields. We extend Liebeck's theorem to the case of locally finite simple Moufang loops.

We show that there exists a non-linear, locally finite, simple group such that the centralizer of every non-trivial element is (locally solvable)-by-finite.

Linear Automorphism Groups Of Relatively Free Groups, A. Yu. Olshanskii Jan 2007

Linear Automorphism Groups Of Relatively Free Groups, A. Yu. Olshanskii

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let G be a free group in a variety of groups, but G is not absolutely free. We prove that the group of automorphisms Aut(G) is linear if and only if G is a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group.

Finitary Actions And Invariant Ideals, D. S. Passman Jan 2007

Finitary Actions And Invariant Ideals, D. S. Passman

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let K be a field and let G be a group. If G acts on an abelian group V, then it acts naturally on any group algebra K[V], and we are concerned with classifying the G-stable ideals of K[V]. In this paper, we consider a rather concrete situation. We take G to be an infinite locally finite simple group acting in a finitary manner on V. When G is a finitary version of a classical linear group, then we show that the augmentation ideal \omega K[G] is the unique proper G-stable ideal of K[V]. On the other hand, if G …

Dealing with unexpected dynamic loads in Jet and Turbine engines have always been a matter of concern and an active area of research. This thesis is an initial attempt to apply Evolvable Hardware methods for augmenting classical control methods in a generic turbine engine model. In this work, the Air Force Research Laboratory Generic Turbine Engine Model was converted into C and interfaced with a simulation of a EH VLSI control chip currently under development. The simulated EH device was allowed to evolve to augment the simulated engine's standard FADEC controller so that the whole system could tolerate unexpected, large …

A Comparison Of Edge Detection Methods For Segmentation Of Skin Lesions In Mobile-Phone-Quality Images, Khanh Linh Hua Jan 2007

A Comparison Of Edge Detection Methods For Segmentation Of Skin Lesions In Mobile-Phone-Quality Images, Khanh Linh Hua

Theses : Honours

The world is faced with a rapidly increasing number of skin cancers every year. Melanoma is the most deadly type of skin cancer though it can be treated if it has been detected at an early stage. However, there is a shortage of dermatologists in rural areas. The increasing number of camera phones, together with improved coverage in rural areas gives some potential for tele-dermatology, whereby people with no local access to a dermatologist can send images of suspicious skin lesions to an expert for assessment. Merely relaying images to a human expert solves only part of the problem, there …

Classification Of Microarray Data To Predict Toxic Exposure, Tarek A. Seleem Jan 2007

Classification Of Microarray Data To Predict Toxic Exposure, Tarek A. Seleem

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a software system for the analysis of microarray data. Microarrays are a relatively new technology that can be used to examine the state of the genome of an organism at some instant in time. The challenge is the amount of natural variation in biological systems limits our ability to identify specific genes that may be sensitive to changes in an organism's physiology or its environment. The analysis software consists of three modules. The first module filters microarray data to reduce the complexity of the problem. The second module selects subsets of genes for evaluation using a genetic …

Matrix Effects, Development Of Clean-Up And Lc-Techniques Contributing Towards A Reference Lcms Method For The Analysis Of Lipophilic Marine Toxins, Mairead Anne Mcelhinney Jan 2007

Matrix Effects, Development Of Clean-Up And Lc-Techniques Contributing Towards A Reference Lcms Method For The Analysis Of Lipophilic Marine Toxins, Mairead Anne Mcelhinney

Masters

The most widely used reference method in Europe for the detection and monitoring of lipophilic marine toxins is the Mouse Bioassay (MBA) as first described by Yasumoto et al., (1978). The MBA offers a good level of protection to human health and is capable of detecting the overall toxicity of previously known toxins. However, there are drawbacks associated with the use of the MBA as it is both expensive and time consuming and can give false positives due to interferences (Suzuki et al, 1976). The problems associated with the original mouse bioassay have led to several modifications (Yasumoto et al, …

Metastable Equilibria Among Dicarboxylic Acids And The Oxidation State During Aqueous Alteration On The Cm2 Chondrite Parent Body, Jason A. Mcalister, Richard M. Kettler Jan 2007

Metastable Equilibria Among Dicarboxylic Acids And The Oxidation State During Aqueous Alteration On The Cm2 Chondrite Parent Body, Jason A. Mcalister, Richard M. Kettler

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Linear saturated dicarboxylic acids are present in carbonaceous chondrite samples at concentrations that suggest aqueous alteration under conditions of metastable equilibrium. In this study, previously published values of dicarboxylic acid concentrations measured in Murchison, Yamato-791198, and Tagish Lake carbonaceous chondrites are converted to aqueous activities during aqueous alteration assuming water:rock ratios that range from 1:10 to 10:1. Logarithmic plots of the aqueous activities of any two dicarboxylic acids are proximal to lines whose slope is fixed by the stoichiometry of reactions describing the oxidation–reduction equilibrium between the two species. The precise position of any line is controlled by the equilibrium …

A Novel Over-Sea-Ice Seismic Reflection Survey In Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, S. J. Betterly, M. A. Speece, R. H. Levy, David M. Harwood, S. A. Henrys Jan 2007

A Novel Over-Sea-Ice Seismic Reflection Survey In Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, S. J. Betterly, M. A. Speece, R. H. Levy, David M. Harwood, S. A. Henrys

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

During the austral spring of 2005, approximately 28 km of over-sea-ice seismic reflection data were recorded over McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, in support of the ANtarctic geological DRILLing Program (ANDRILL). The 2005 ANDRILL Southern McMurdo Sound Project (SMS) seismic survey incorporated techniques that improved the quality of over-sea-ice seismic data. Previous over-sea-ice seismic experiments have had limited success because of poor source coupling caused by thin sea ice and source bubble-pulse effects caused by explosive seismic sources placed in the water column. To mitigate these problems, a Generator-Injector (GI) air gun was used as the seismic source. The GI air gun …

Polarimetric Signatures And Microphysical Processes In Tornadic Southern And High Plains Classic Supercells, Matthew S. Van Den Broeke Jan 2007

Polarimetric Signatures And Microphysical Processes In Tornadic Southern And High Plains Classic Supercells, Matthew S. Van Den Broeke

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Preliminary schematics of polarimetric signatures are developed for classic, tornadic supercells at low, mid, and upper levels for the Southern and High Plains. Schematics are developed for pre-tornado, tornado, and tornado demise times from a small collection of cases, most of which were cyclically tornadic. Characteristic signatures and patterns are identified for reflectivity factor (ZHH), differential reflectivity (ZDR), correlation coefficient (ρhv), specific differential phase (KDP), and linear depolarization ratio (LDRVH), and signatures likely related to the tornado lifecycle are discussed.

Additionally, observed changes in four polarimetric variables (ZHH, …

Decadal Variation Of The Southwest U.S. Summer Monsoon Circulation And Rainfall In A Regional Model, Q. Steven Hu, Yongjun Zheng Jan 2007

Decadal Variation Of The Southwest U.S. Summer Monsoon Circulation And Rainfall In A Regional Model, Q. Steven Hu, Yongjun Zheng

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Previous studies have identified several major causes for summer rainfall variations over the southwest United States, for example, land memory (i.e., relationships between antecedent winter season precipitation and snow cover anomalies and subsequent summer rainfall anomalies over the southwest United States; these anomalies are likely most important in the northwest United States, although antecedent anomalies in the southwest United States also may be important in determining summer rainfall variations) and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the North Pacific. Atmospheric responses to these “boundary forces” interact with moisture flows from the Gulf of Mexico and from the Gulf of California …

Mining Multiple Visual Appearances Of Semantics For Image Annotation, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo Jan 2007

Mining Multiple Visual Appearances Of Semantics For Image Annotation, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper investigates the problem of learning the visual semantics of keyword categories for automatic image annotation. Supervised learning algorithms which learn only a single concept point of a category are limited in their effectiveness for image annotation. We propose to use data mining techniques to mine multiple concepts, where each concept may consist of one or more visual parts, to capture the diverse visual appearances of a single keyword category. For training, we use the Apriori principle to efficiently mine a set of frequent blobsets to capture the semantics of a rich and diverse visual category. Each concept is …

Amphibolite-facies Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks below the low-angle Cenozoic Boundary Canyon Detachment record deep crustal processes related to Mesozoic crustal thickening and subsequent extension. A 91.5 ± 1.4 Ma Th-Pb SHRIMP-RG (sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe–reverse geometry) monazite age from garnet-kyanite-staurolite schist constrains the age of prograde metamorphism in the lower plate. Between the Boundary Canyon Detachment and the structurally deeper, subparallel Monarch Spring fault, prograde metamorphic fabrics are overprinted by a pervasive greenschist-facies retrogression, high-strain subhorizontal mylonitic foliation, and a prominent WNW-ESE stretching lineation parallel to corrugations on the Boundary Canyon Detachment. Granitic pegmatite dikes are deformed, rotated into parallelism, and …

High- And Ultrahigh-Pressure Metamorphism In The North Qaidam And South Altyn Terranes, Western China, Chris G. Mattinson, C. A. Menold, Jian-Xin Zhang, D. K. Bird Jan 2007

High- And Ultrahigh-Pressure Metamorphism In The North Qaidam And South Altyn Terranes, Western China, Chris G. Mattinson, C. A. Menold, Jian-Xin Zhang, D. K. Bird

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The North Qaidam and South Altyn terranes extend approximately 1000 km across the northern Tibetan Plateau, and five localities preserve evidence of Early Paleozoic high-pressure (HP) or ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphism, including the presence of coesite, coesite pseudomorphs, and diamond. A review of the geology, petrology, and geochronology collected over the past 10 years since these localities were discovered supports a correlation of the North Qaidam and South Altyn terranes, offset 350-400 km across the Altyn Tagh fault. Geochronology interpreted to reflect eclogite-facies metamorphism yields ages between 500 and 420 Ma; detailed geochronology from one locality supports a protracted (tens of …

Recommender systems (RS) are being used by an increasing number of e-commerce sites to help consumers find the personally best products. We define here the criteria that a RS should satisfy, drawing on concepts from behavioral science, computational intelligence, and data mining. We present our conclusions from building the WiseUncle RS and give its general description. Rather than being an advisor for a particular application, WiseUncle is a generic RS, a platform for generating application-specific advisors.

Sulfur-Oxidizing Bacteria In Soap Lake (Washington State), A Meromictic, Haloalkaline Lake With An Unprecedented High Sulfide Content, Dimitry Y. Sorokin, Mirjam Foti, Holly C. Pinkart, Gerard Muyzer

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Culture-dependent and -independent techniques were used to study the diversity of chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in Soap Lake (Washington State), a meromictic, haloalkaline lake containing an unprecedentedly high sulfide concentration in the anoxic monimolimnion. Both approaches revealed the dominance of bacteria belonging to the genus Thioalkalimicrobium, which are common inhabitants of soda lakes. A dense population of Thioalkalimicrobium (up to 107 cells/ml) was found at the chemocline, which is characterized by a steep oxygen-sulfide gradient. Twelve Thioalkalimicrobium strains exhibiting three different phenotypes were isolated in pure culture from various locations in Soap Lake. The isolates fell into two groups …

Solving The Teacher Assignment-Course Scheduling Problem By A Hybrid Algorithm, Aldy Gunawan, Kien Ming Ng, Kim Leng Poh Jan 2007

Solving The Teacher Assignment-Course Scheduling Problem By A Hybrid Algorithm, Aldy Gunawan, Kien Ming Ng, Kim Leng Poh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a hybrid algorithm for solving atimetabling problem, which is commonly encountered in manyuniversities. The problem combines both teacher assignment andcourse scheduling problems simultaneously, and is presented as amathematical programming model. However, this problem becomesintractable and it is unlikely that a proven optimal solution can beobtained by an integer programming approach, especially for largeproblem instances. A hybrid algorithm that combines an integerprogramming approach, a greedy heuristic and a modified simulatedannealing algorithm collaboratively is proposed to solve the problem.Several randomly generated data sets of sizes comparable to that ofan institution in Indonesia are solved using the proposed algorithm.Computational results …
