Posterminaries: More Or Less Modern, Alexander H. King

Alexander H. King

It is yet another sign that I am aging. More and more often when young researchers hand me a written report of their research, I find myself criticizing their introductory section: “You need to start your literature survey with the original papers on this topic. Go and read…” followed by a citation to some classic of the learned literature.

Seismicity In The Vicinity Of Yucca Mountain, Nevada, For The Period October 1, 2004 To September 30, 2006, Ken Smith, John G. Anderson, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

This report describes earthquake activity within approximately 65 km of Yucca Mountain site during the October 1, 2004 to September 30, 2006 time period (FY05-06). The FY05-06 earthquake activity will be compared with the historical and more recent period of seismic activity in the Yucca Mountain region. The relationship between the distribution of seismicity and active faults, historical patterns of activity, and rates of earthquakes (number of events and their magnitudes) are important components in the assessment of the seismic hazard for the Yucca Mountain site. Since October 1992 the University of Nevada has compiled a catalog of earthquakes in …

Publications (YM)

Earthquake activity in the Yucca Mountain from October 1, 2002 through September 30, 2003 (FY03) is assessed and compared with previous activity in the region. FY03 is the first reporting year since the 1992 M 5.6 Little Skull Mountain earthquake with no earthquakes greater than M 3.0 within 65 km of Yucca Mountain. In addition, FY03 includes the fewest number of earthquakes greater than M 2.0 in any reporting year since the LSM event. With 3075 earthquakes in the catalog, FY03 represents the second largest number of earthquakes (second to FY02) since FY96 when digital seismic network operations began. The …

Reactivity Of Iso-Diiodomethane And Iso-Iodoform, Isomers Of Ch2i2 And Chi3, Toward The Double Bond Of A Variety Of Cycloalkenes, Alexander N. Tarnovsky, Irmin Pascher, Torbjorn Pascher

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The metastable CH2I-I and CHI2-I isomers formed by UV photolysis of CH2I2, and CHI3 transfer methylene and iodomethylene groups, respectively, to a variety of cycloalkenes, leading to their cyclopropanation. More than a 100-fold increase of the reaction rate with increasing solvent polarity suggests a dipolar transition state. The fastest second-order rates observed were in CH3CN. However, CH2Cl2 will be the more appropriate reaction medium because the isomer thermal stability is greater in CH2Cl2 than in the more polar CH3CN.

Global Conservation Of Biodiversity And Ecosystem Services, Will R. Turner, Katrina Brandon, Thomas M. Brooks, Robert Costanza Nov 2007

Global Conservation Of Biodiversity And Ecosystem Services, Will R. Turner, Katrina Brandon, Thomas M. Brooks, Robert Costanza

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Habitat destruction has driven much of the current biodiversity extinction crisis, and it compromises the essential benefits, or ecosystem services, that humans derive from functioning ecosystems. Securing both species and ecosystem services might be accomplished with common solutions. Yet it is unknown whether these two major conservation objectives coincide broadly enough worldwide to enable global strategies for both goals to gain synergy. In this article, we assess the concordance between these two objectives, explore how the concordance varies across different regions, and examine the global potential for safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem services simultaneously. We find that published global priority maps …

Encoding Ais Binary Messages In Xml Format For Providing Hydrographic-Related Information, Schwehr Kurt, Lee Alexander Nov 2007

Encoding Ais Binary Messages In Xml Format For Providing Hydrographic-Related Information, Schwehr Kurt, Lee Alexander

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

A specification is proposed to enable hydrographic and maritime safety agencies to encode AIS messages using Extensible Markup Language (XML). It specifies the order, length, and type of fields contained in ITU-R.M.1371-1. A XML schema validates the message definitions, and a XSLT style sheet produces reference documentation in 'html' format. AIS binary messages in XML are an effective means to communicate dynamic and real-time port/waterway information. For example, tidal information can be continuously broadcast to maritime users and applied to a "tide-aware" ENC. The XML format aligns with the type of data encapsulation planned for the IHO Geospatial Standard for …

Can Superior Crm Capabilities Improve Performance In Banking, T. R. Coltman Nov 2007

Can Superior Crm Capabilities Improve Performance In Banking, T. R. Coltman

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The market enthusiasm generated around investment in customer relationship management (CRM) technology is in stark contrast to the nay-saying by many academic and business commentators. This raises an important research question concerning the extent to which banks should continue to invest in CRM technology. Drawing on field interviews and a survey of senior bank executives the results reveal that a superior CRM capability can deliver improved performance. The paper then demonstrates that in order to be most successful, CRM programs require a combination of technical, human and business capabilities.

An Omnibus Test When Using A Regression Estimator With Multiple Predictors, Rand R. Wilcox Nov 2007

An Omnibus Test When Using A Regression Estimator With Multiple Predictors, Rand R. Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In quantile regression, the goal is to estimate theγ quantile of Y given values for p predictors. Methods for making inferences about the individual slope parameters have been proposed, some of which have been found to perform very well in simulations. But for an omnibus test that all slope parameters are zero, it appears that little is known about how best to proceed. For the special case γ =.5, a drop-in-dispersion test has been recommended, but it requires a large sample size to control the probability of a Type I error and it assumes that the usual error term is …

Sensitivity Curves For Asymmetric Trimming Hinge Estimators, D.B. Stark, J.F. Reed Iii Nov 2007

Sensitivity Curves For Asymmetric Trimming Hinge Estimators, D.B. Stark, J.F. Reed Iii

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Robust estimators have been developed and tested for symmetric distributions via simulation studies. The primary objective was to show that they are more efficient than the sample mean when used in conjunction with asymmetric distributions. Little attention has been given to how they perform on data that are from asymmetric distributions, or from distributions that have inherent anomalies (messy data). Thus, the behavior of hinge estimators using sensitivity curve are examined.

Global Measure Of The Deviation Of A Wavelet Density Estimator, Kussiy K. Alyass Nov 2007

Global Measure Of The Deviation Of A Wavelet Density Estimator, Kussiy K. Alyass

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A wavelet estimator f*(x) of an unknown probability density function f(x)∈L2(R) is considered. A conditional central limit theorem for martingales is used to show that ∫([f *(x) − f (x)]^2)dx is asymptotically normally distributed. Results obtained can be used in a test of goodness-of-fit.

Bayesian Subset Selection Of Binomial Parameters Using Possibly Misclassified Data, James D. Stamey, Thomas L. Bratcher, Dean M. Young Nov 2007

Bayesian Subset Selection Of Binomial Parameters Using Possibly Misclassified Data, James D. Stamey, Thomas L. Bratcher, Dean M. Young

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Three Bayesian approaches are considered for the selection of binomial proportion parameters when data is subject to misclassification. The cases where the misclassification is non-differential and differential were considered, thus extending previous work which considered only non-differential misclassification. In this article, various selection criteria are applied to a simulated data set and a real data set.

Longitudinal Evaluation Of Estimates In An Esablishment Survey After Ration Imputation, Adriana Pérez

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Researchers evaluated a ratio imputation technique used at the US Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering, which is an annually conducted cross-sectional establishment survey. Standardized bias was used, mean square error and relative bias to appraise this imputation method on point and variance estimates via simulations.

From Information Lost To Knowledge Gained: The Benefits Of Analyzing All The Research Evidence, Joseph L. Balloun, Hilton Barrett Nov 2007

From Information Lost To Knowledge Gained: The Benefits Of Analyzing All The Research Evidence, Joseph L. Balloun, Hilton Barrett

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Data analyses should reveal truths about data. To the extent possible analyses should tell a complete picture. Data analyses should not inadvertently ignore phenomena that might be discovered in sample data sets. However, common univariate or multivariate data analysis methods tend to be based on only the means, standard deviations, and Pearson correlations. The result is that many important truths are discovered, but not the whole truth. This article illustrates in a sample data set that (a) data analyses of other properties of variables and groups are feasible and practical, and (b) such analyses may reveal important information not otherwise …

A Weighted Moving Average Process For Forcasting, Shou Hsing Shih, Chris P. Tsokos Nov 2007

A Weighted Moving Average Process For Forcasting, Shou Hsing Shih, Chris P. Tsokos

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A forecasting model for a nonstationary stochastic realization is proposed based on modifying a given time series into a new k-time moving average time series. The study is based on the autoregressive integrated moving average process along with its analytical constrains. The analytical procedure of the proposed model is given. A stock XYZ selected from the Fortune 500 list of companies and its daily closing price constitute the time series. Both the classical and proposed forecasting models were developed and a comparison of the accuracy of their responses is given.

Quaternary Glaciation And Hydrologic Variation In The South American Tropics As Reconstructed From The Lake Titicaca Drilling Project, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Paul A. Baker, Geoffrey O. Seltzer, Ashley Ballantyne, Pedro Tapia, Hai Cheng, R. Lawrence Edwards Nov 2007

Quaternary Glaciation And Hydrologic Variation In The South American Tropics As Reconstructed From The Lake Titicaca Drilling Project, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Paul A. Baker, Geoffrey O. Seltzer, Ashley Ballantyne, Pedro Tapia, Hai Cheng, R. Lawrence Edwards

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A 136-m-long drill core of sediments was recovered from tropical high-altitude Lake Titicaca, Bolivia-Peru, enabling a reconstruction of past climate that spans four cycles of regional glacial advance and retreat and that is estimated to extend continuously over the last 370,000 yr. Within the errors of the age model, the periods of regional glacial advance and retreat are concordant respectively with global glacial and interglacial stages. Periods of ice advance in the southern tropical Andes generally were periods of positive water balance, as evidenced by deeper and fresher conditions in Lake Titicaca. Conversely, reduced glaciation occurred during periods of negative …

Combined Remote Sensing And Field Investigations Of Hydrocarbon Trap Analogue Structures: Examples From The Zagros Simply Folded Belt, Iran And The Sawtooth Range, Montana [Abstract], Caroline M. Burberry, David Cannon, John W. Cosgrove, Terry Engelder

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

First paragraph of abstract: Structures that outcrop at the surface in fold-thrust belts are frequently good analogues for hydrocarbon traps in compressional environments. Along-strike changes in structure and geometry have important implications for connectivity and fluid flow throughout the petroleum system, e.g. in the Zagros Simply Folded Belt, Iran, and in a surface reservoir analogue in the Sawtooth Range, Montana.

Angular And Polarization Analysis Of X-Rays Emitted From Highly-Charged, Few-Electron Ions, Stephan Fritzsche, Andrey S. Surzhykov, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Th H. Stohlker

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The recent theoretical progress in studying the x-ray emission from highly-charged, few-electron ions is reviewed. These case studies show that relativistic, high-Z ions provide a unique tool for better understanding the interplay between the electron-photon and electron-electron interactions in strong fields. Most naturally, this interplay is probed by the radiative capture of a (quasi-) free electron into the bound states of projectile ions, and by varying the charge state and the energy of the projectiles. For the capture into initially hydrogen-and lithium-like ions, here we summarize the recent results for the angular distribution and polarization of the recombination photons as …
