Factors Influencing Epiphytic Lichen Communities In Aspen-Associated Forests Of The Bear River Range, Idaho And Utah, Paul C. Rogers Jan 2007

Factors Influencing Epiphytic Lichen Communities In Aspen-Associated Forests Of The Bear River Range, Idaho And Utah, Paul C. Rogers

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

In western North America, quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is the most common hardwood in montane landscapes. Fire suppression, grazing, wildlife management practices, and climate patterns of the past century are some of the threats to aspen coverage in this region. Researchers are concerned that aspen-dependent species may be losing habitat, thereby threatening their long-term local and regional viability. Though lichens have a rich history as air pollution indicators, I believe that they may also be useful as a metric of community diversity associated with habitat change. To date, few studies have specifically examined the status of aspen’s epiphytic lichen …

Reactivation Pathway Of The Hydrogenase H-Cluster: Density Functional Theory Study, Stefan Motiu, Daniela Dogaru, Valentin Gogonea Jan 2007

Reactivation Pathway Of The Hydrogenase H-Cluster: Density Functional Theory Study, Stefan Motiu, Daniela Dogaru, Valentin Gogonea

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This work puts forth a reaction pathway for the reactivation of exogenous ligand inhibited H-cluster, the active site of Fe-only hydrogenases. The H-cluster is a dimetal complex, Fe–Fe, with the metal centers bridged by di(thiomethyl)amine. Exogenous ligands, H2O, and OH−, are bound to the distal iron (Fed). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the native and ruthenium-modified H-cluster have been performed using the B3LYP functional with 6-31+G** and 6-311+G** basis sets. We have ascertained that there is a thermodynamically favorable pathway for the reactivation of the OH− inhibited H-cluster, which proceeds by an initial protonation of the Fed–OH− complex. The …

Study Of Soliton Stabilization In D+1 Dimensions Using Novel Analytical And Numerical Techniques, George Nehmetallah, Partha P. Banerjee Jan 2007

Study Of Soliton Stabilization In D+1 Dimensions Using Novel Analytical And Numerical Techniques, George Nehmetallah, Partha P. Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this Chapter, we provide a brief review of the underlying nonlinear Schrödinger and associated equations that model spatio-temporal propagation in one and higher dimensions in a nonlinear dispersive environment. Particular attention is given to fast adaptive numerical techniques to solve such equations, and in the presence of dispersion and nonlinearity management, saturating nonlinearity and nonparaxiality. A unique variational approach is also outlined which helps in determining the ranges of nonlinearity and dispersion parameters to ensure stable solutions of the nonlinear equations. The propagation of 3+1 dimensional spatio-temporal pulses, or optical bullets is also modeled using a fast adaptive split-step …

Excess Silica In Omphacite And The Formation Of Free Silica In Eclogite, H. W. Day, Sean R. Mulcahy Jan 2007

Excess Silica In Omphacite And The Formation Of Free Silica In Eclogite, H. W. Day, Sean R. Mulcahy

Geology Faculty Publications

Silica lamellae in eclogitic clinopyroxene are widely interpreted as evidence of exsolution during decompression of eclogite. However, mechanisms other than exsolution might produce free silica, and the possible mechanisms depend in part on the nature and definition of excess silica. ‘Excess’ silica may occur in both stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric pyroxene. Although the issue has been debated, we show that all common definitions of excess silica in non-stoichiometric clinopyroxene are internally consistent, interchangeable, and therefore equivalent. The excess silica content of pyroxene is easily illustrated in a three-component, condensed composition space and may be plotted directly from a structural formula unit …

Precursory Seismicity Associated With Frequent, Large Ice Avalanches On Iliamna Volcano, Alaska, Usa, Jacqueline Caplan-Auerbach, Christian Huggel Jan 2007

Precursory Seismicity Associated With Frequent, Large Ice Avalanches On Iliamna Volcano, Alaska, Usa, Jacqueline Caplan-Auerbach, Christian Huggel

Geology Faculty Publications

Since 1994, at least six major (volume >106m3 ) ice and rock avalanches have occurred on Iliamna volcano, Alaska, USA. Each of the avalanches was preceded by up to 2 hours of seismicity believed to represent the initial stages of failure. Each seismic sequence begins with a series of repeating earthquakes thought to represent slip on an ice–rock interface, or between layers of ice. This stage is followed by a prolonged period of continuous ground-shaking that reflects constant slip accommodated by deformation at the glacier base. Finally the glacier fails in a large avalanche. Some of the events appear to …

Pleistocene Brawley And Ocotillo Formations: Evidence For Initial Strike-Slip Deformation Along The San Felipe And San Jacinto Fault Zones, Southern California, Stefan M. Kirby, Susanne U. Janecke, Rebecca J. Dorsey, Bernard A. Housen, Victoria E. Langenheim, Kristin A. Mcdougall, Alexander N. Steely

Geology Faculty Publications

We examine the Pleistocene tectonic reorganization of the Pacific–North American plate boundary in the Salton Trough of southern California with an integrated approach that includes basin analysis, magnetostratigraphy, and geologic mapping of upper Pliocene to Pleistocene sedimentary rocks in the San Felipe Hills. These deposits preserve the earliest sedimentary record of movement on the San Felipe and San Jacinto fault zones that replaced and deactivated the late Cenozoic West Salton detachment fault. Sandstone and mudstone of the Brawley Formation accumulated between ∼1.1 and ∼0.6–0.5 Ma in a delta on the margin of an arid Pleistocene lake, which received sediment from …

Cenozoic Extensional Processes And Tectonics In The Northern Rocky Mountains, Susanne U. Janecke Jan 2007

Cenozoic Extensional Processes And Tectonics In The Northern Rocky Mountains, Susanne U. Janecke

Susanne U. Janecke

Extension has shaped the crust of the Northern Rocky Mountains for more than a billion years. Rifting produced the Belt basin shortly after 1.5 Ga and initiated the Paleozoic passive margin. Mesozoic to early Cenozoic convergence pro-duced the Cordilleran fold-and-thrust belt, the uplifts of the Rocky Mountain foreland (Laramide) and an unusually broad Challis arc in the northern Rocky Mountains. The struc-tural grain of the contractional belts, basement features, and the rheology of the Idaho batho-lith influenced the locus, kinematics and ge-ometry of the >55 m.y. of extension that fol-lowed. Sparse data suggest that extension may have begun in the …

Continuous Laser‐Excited Photothermal Spectrometry Of CdsXSe1‐X Doped Glasses, Oluwatosin Dada, Matthew R. Jorgensen, Stephen E. Bialkowski Jan 2007

Continuous Laser‐Excited Photothermal Spectrometry Of CdsXSe1‐X Doped Glasses, Oluwatosin Dada, Matthew R. Jorgensen, Stephen E. Bialkowski

Stephen E. Bialkowski

Photothermal lens measurements and finite element modeling are used to examine the physical changes taking place in optical filter glasses. Colored glass and neutral density filters are found to have a strong positive temperature-dependent refractive index change. The overall positive refractive index change is thought to be a consequence of complex counteracting factors: stress-induced birefringence, polarizability, structural network, and temperature-dependent carrier density changes in the CdSxSe1–x microcrystals that produce optical properties of these glasses. Finite element analysis (FEA) modeling is used to examine the temperature profiles and the goodness of the semi-infinite thermal diffusion solution normally used …

Longitudinal Dependence Of Middle And Low Latitude Zonal Plasmadrifts Measured By De-2, J. Jensen, Bela Fejer Jan 2007

Longitudinal Dependence Of Middle And Low Latitude Zonal Plasmadrifts Measured By De-2, J. Jensen, Bela Fejer

Bela G. Fejer

We used ion drift observations from the DE-2 satellite to study for the first time the longitudinal variations of middle and low latitude F region zonal plasma drifts during quiet and disturbed conditions. The quiet-time middle latitude drifts are predominantly westward; the low latitude drifts are westward during the day and eastward at night. The daytime quiet-time drifts do not change much with longitude; the nighttime drifts have strong season dependent longitudinal variations. In the dusk-premidnight period, the equinoctial middle latitude westward drifts are smallest in the European sector and the low latitude eastward drifts are largest in the American-Pacific …

Low-Temperature Charge Transport In Ga-Acceptor Nanowires Implanted By Focused-Ion Beams, S. J. Robinson, C. L. Perkins, T. -C. Shen, J. R. Tucker, T. Schenkel, X. W. Wang, T. P. Ma Jan 2007

Low-Temperature Charge Transport In Ga-Acceptor Nanowires Implanted By Focused-Ion Beams, S. J. Robinson, C. L. Perkins, T. -C. Shen, J. R. Tucker, T. Schenkel, X. W. Wang, T. P. Ma

T. -C. Shen

Ga-acceptor nanowires were embedded in crystalline Si using focused-ion beams. The dc current-voltage characteristics of these wires after annealing are highly nonlinear at low temperatures. A conductance threshold of less than 50mV is observed independent of Ga+ dosage and implant beam overlap. These features suggest a Coulomb blockade transport mechanism presumably caused by a network of Ga precipitates in the substrate. This granular scenario is further supported by measurements of gated nanowires. Nanowires with metallic conductance at low temperatures could be achieved by reducing the current density of the focused-ion beams.

Development Of A Novel Modular Mid-Infrared Sensor For The In-Situ Detection Of The Btex Compounds In Water, Raymond Mccue Jan 2007

Development Of A Novel Modular Mid-Infrared Sensor For The In-Situ Detection Of The Btex Compounds In Water, Raymond Mccue

Doctoral

This research thesis describes the design, construction and testing of a novel modular mid-infrared fibre optic sensing system for the detection of hydrocarbons in water. It is the adverse effects to these hydrocarbon pollutants on flora and fauna that has led to the development of sensing systems for their detection and quantification. The key sensor design feature, its modularity, utilises simple low cost commercially available optical components, which are inherently suited to construct compact rugged sensing systems to perform in-situ measurements which are ideally preferred for environmental sensing. The various laboratory-based prototypes constructed weee calibrated for two target analytes over …

Comparison Of Efficiency Of An Advanced Oxidation Process For Degrading Major Classes Of Dyes, Fatima Hasan Abdullah Ai-Hamedi Jan 2007

Comparison Of Efficiency Of An Advanced Oxidation Process For Degrading Major Classes Of Dyes, Fatima Hasan Abdullah Ai-Hamedi

Theses

Synthetic dyes are a major part of our life. Products ranging from clothes to leather

Accessories to furniture all depend on extensive use of organic dyes.

There are numerous classes of these dyes. However, azo, anthraquinonoid,

Triarylmethane, diarylmethane, acridine, quinine, xanthane and nitro represent the major

Classes and are most commonly used dyes.

An unfortunate side effect of their widespread use is the fact that up to 12% of these dyes are

Wasted during the dyeing process, and that approximately 20% of this waste enters the environment (mostly in water supply). The effluents from these industries cause the water bodies …
