Two Number-Theoretic Problems That Illustrate The Power And Limitations Of Randomness, Andrew Shallue Dec 2006

Two Number-Theoretic Problems That Illustrate The Power And Limitations Of Randomness, Andrew Shallue

Andrew Shallue

This thesis contains work on two problems in algorithmic number theory. The first problem is to give an algorithm that constructs a rational point on an elliptic curve over a finite field. A fast and easy randomized algorithm has existed for some time. We prove that in the case where the finite field has characteristic 2, there is a deterministic algorithm with the same asymptotic running time as the existing randomized algorithm.

Second Born Approximation And Coulomb Scattering, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

We examine the problem of calculating higher order contributions to the Coulomb scattering amplitude. To make contact with the well known result, it is necessary to modify the conventional definition of the scattering amplitude.

Iron(Iii) P-Toluenesulfonate Catalyzed Synthesis Of Homoallyl Ethers From Acetals And Aldehydes, Ram S. Mohan, Matthew J. Spafford, Erin D. Anderson, Joshua R. Lacey, Ann C. Palma Dec 2006

Iron(Iii) P-Toluenesulfonate Catalyzed Synthesis Of Homoallyl Ethers From Acetals And Aldehydes, Ram S. Mohan, Matthew J. Spafford, Erin D. Anderson, Joshua R. Lacey, Ann C. Palma

Ram S. Mohan

Iron(III) p-toluenesulfonate, Fe(OTs)3.6H20, is an inexpensive, versatile and commercially available catalyst for the allylation of acetals using allyltrimethylsilane to yield homoallyl ethers in moderate to good yields. The one-pot conversion of aldehydes to homoallyl ethers using alkoxysilanes has also been accomplished using Fe(OTs)3.6H20 as a catalyst. The use of mild reaction conditions and a relatively non-corrosive catalyst make this method an attractive option for the synthesis of a range of homoallyl ethers.

Reactivity Of Ionic Liquids, Ram S. Mohan, Shahana Chowdhury, Janet L. Scott Dec 2006

Reactivity Of Ionic Liquids, Ram S. Mohan, Shahana Chowdhury, Janet L. Scott

Ram S. Mohan

Ionic liquids are becoming widely used in synthetic organic chemistry and yet relatively little attention has been paid to the intrinsic reactivity of these low temperature molten salts. Clues to the non-innocent nature of many ionic liquids are contained in the reports of altered reactivity of dissolved substrates, unexpected catalytic activity and unforeseen by-product formation. In this review, we focus on the reactivity of ionic liquids, as opposed to reactivity in ionic liquids (although discussion of the latter is often included where it aids understanding of the former).

Singular Value Decomposition And Its Visualization, Lingsong Zhang, J. S. Marron, Haipeng Shen, Zhengyuan Zhu Dec 2006

Singular Value Decomposition And Its Visualization, Lingsong Zhang, J. S. Marron, Haipeng Shen, Zhengyuan Zhu

Zhengyuan Zhu

Singular value decomposition (SVD) is a useful tool in functional data analysis (FDA). Compared to principal component analysis (PCA), SVD is more fundamental, because SVD simultaneously provides the PCAs in both row and column spaces. We compare SVD and PCA from the FDA view point, and extend the usual SVD to variations by considering different centerings. A generalized scree plot is proposed to select an appropriate centering in practice. Several useful matrix views of the SVD components are introduced to explore different features in data, including SVD surface plots, image plots, curve movies, and rotation movies. These methods visualize both …

Effects Of Support On The Initiation And Duration Of Breastfeeding, Sara L. Gill, Elizabeth Reifsnider, Joseph F. Lucke Dec 2006

Effects Of Support On The Initiation And Duration Of Breastfeeding, Sara L. Gill, Elizabeth Reifsnider, Joseph F. Lucke

Joseph Lucke

Researchers attempted to increase the initiation of breastfeeding and its duration to 6 months among a group of low-income, Hispanic women through an intervention program which included prenatal education and home based postpartum support. All participants were telephoned after delivery to determine infant feeding method. Duration of breastfeeding was determined by counting the number of days from initiation to the last day the baby was put to the breast. The Bayesian approach was used for the statistical analyses. In the intervention group, the propensity to initiate breastfeeding exceeded that of the control group. Results indicate the intervention group had twice …

Controlled Language: The Next Big Thing In Translation?, Uwe Muegge Dec 2006

Controlled Language: The Next Big Thing In Translation?, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Many global organizations are beginning to see the productivity indicators for their translation and localization processes reach a plateau. That’s an inevitable fact even for those organizations that use what’s currently billed as the latest and greatest in translation technology, such as translation memory with automated workflow components or globalization management systems. Even with these tools in place, making content available in multiple languages remains a very expensive and time-consuming proposition. For those looking for ways to reduce the cost of translation to the point where almost all materials that should be translation actually can be translated, controlled language may …

Modeling Innovation By A Kinetic Description Of The Patent Citation System, Gabor Csardi, Katherine J. Strandburg, Jan Tobochnik, Peter Erdi, Laszlo Zalanyi Dec 2006

Modeling Innovation By A Kinetic Description Of The Patent Citation System, Gabor Csardi, Katherine J. Strandburg, Jan Tobochnik, Peter Erdi, Laszlo Zalanyi

Katherine J. Strandburg

This paper reports results of a network theory approach to the study of the United States patent system. We model the patent citation network as a discrete time, discrete space stochastic dynamic system. From patent data we extract an attractiveness function, A(k, l), which determines the likelihood that a patent will be cited. A(k, l) shows power law aging and perferential attachment, the exponent of the latter is increasing since 1993, suggesting that patent citations are increasingly concentrated on a relatively small number of patents. In particular, our results appear consistent with an increasing patent “thicket”, in which more and …

Modeling The Effect Of Alzheimer's Disease On Mortality, Elizabeth Johnson, Ron Brookmeyer, Kathryn Ziegler-Graham Dec 2006

Modeling The Effect Of Alzheimer's Disease On Mortality, Elizabeth Johnson, Ron Brookmeyer, Kathryn Ziegler-Graham

Ron Brookmeyer

Mortality rate ratios and the associated proportional hazards models have been used to summarize the effect of Alzheimer's disease on longevity. However, the mortality rate ratios vary by age and therefore do not provide a simple parsimonious summary of the effect of the disease on lifespan. Instead, we propose a new parameter that is defined by an additive multistate model. The proposed multistate model accounts for different stages of disease progression. The underlying assumption of the model is that the effect of disease on mortality is to add a constant amount to death rates once the disease progresses from an …

Predicting Breast-Feeding Attrition: Adapting The Breast-Feeding Attrition Prediction Tool, Elizabeth Reifsnider, Sarah L. Gill, Joseph F. Lucke, Angela R. Mann Dec 2006

Predicting Breast-Feeding Attrition: Adapting The Breast-Feeding Attrition Prediction Tool, Elizabeth Reifsnider, Sarah L. Gill, Joseph F. Lucke, Angela R. Mann

Joseph Lucke

CONTEXT: Current breast-feeding rates fall short of the recommendations set forth in Health People 2010. The Breast-feeding Attrition Prediction Tool (BAPT), administered in the postpartum period, has been useful in predicting breast-feeding attrition. However, assessing a woman's intention to breast-feed prior to birth would identify women at risk for breast-feeding attrition.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe a revised BAPT, administered antepartally that measures intention to breast-feed.

METHODS: The BAPT, comprising 94 items on a 6-point Likert-type scale, was translated into Spanish and back-translated for accuracy. The BAPT was then revised by reducing the number of items …

A Practical Illustration Of The Importance Of Realistic Individualized Treatment Rules In Causal Inference, Oliver Bembom, Mark J. Van Der Laan Dec 2006

A Practical Illustration Of The Importance Of Realistic Individualized Treatment Rules In Causal Inference, Oliver Bembom, Mark J. Van Der Laan

Oliver Bembom

The effect of vigorous physical activity on mortality in the elderly is difficult to estimate using conventional approaches to causal inference that define this effect by comparing the mortality risks corresponding to hypothetical scenarios in which all subjects in the target population engage in a given level of vigorous physical activity. A causal effect defined on the basis of such a static treatment intervention can only be identified from observed data if all subjects in the target population have a positive probability of selecting each of the candidate treatment options, an assumption that is highly unrealistic in this case since …

Game Design As A Writing Course In The Liberal Arts., Amber Settle, Robin Burke, Lucia Dettori

Amber Settle

The School of Computer Science, Telecommunications, and Information Systems (CTI) is a technologically-focused college within DePaul University. While DePaul CTI has a large number of technical degree programs, DePaul University is a liberal arts institution and one that is increasingly focused on improving the writing skills of its students. It can be difficult to create courses that cover necessary technical material while requiring writing as a major part of the assessments. In this paper we discuss GAM 224: Introduction to Game Design, a required course in one of the specialized degree programs at DePaul CTI that involves writing in a …

Distance Learning And Student Satisfaction In Java Programming Courses, Amber Settle, Chad Settle Dec 2006

Distance Learning And Student Satisfaction In Java Programming Courses, Amber Settle, Chad Settle

Amber Settle

Student satisfaction with distance learning is impacted by a variety of factors, including interaction with the instructor and the structure of the course. Satisfaction with distance-learning courses also has a strong impact on retention. In an earlier article, we determined that student satisfaction as measured by course evaluation scores in an online discrete mathematics course taught by the first author was not statistically significantly different from that of students in traditional versions of the same course, supporting some previous studies on distance-learning student satisfaction. However, the model of distance-learning studied in our initial work is not the dominant model used …

Exterminator: Automatically Correcting Memory Errors With High Probability, Gene Novak, Emery D. Berger, Benjamin G. Zorn

Emery Berger

Programs written in C and C++ are susceptible to memory errors, including buffer overflows and dangling pointers. These errors, which can lead to crashes, erroneous execution, and security vulnerabilities, are notoriously costly to repair. Tracking down their location in the source code is difficult, even when the full memory state of the program is available. Once the errors are finally found, fixing them remains challenging: even for critical security-sensitive bugs, the average time between initial reports and the issuance of a patch is nearly one month. We present Exterminator, a system that automatically corrects heap-based memory errors without programmer intervention. …

The Sheffer Group And The Riordan Group, Tian-Xiao He, Peter J.S. Shiue, Leetsch C. Hsu

Tian-Xiao He

We define the Sheffer group of all Sheffer-type polynomials and prove the isomorphism between the Sheffer group and the Riordan group. An equivalence of the Riordan array pair and generalized Stirling number pair is also presented. Finally, we discuss a higher dimensional extension of Riordan array pairs.

Synthesis, Physico-Chemical And Spectroscopic Investigations Of Sodium Dihydrobis(1,2,3-Benzotriazolyl)Borate Ligand And Its Transition Metal Complexes, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, M. M. Rahman, Y. B. Hahn Dec 2006

Synthesis, Physico-Chemical And Spectroscopic Investigations Of Sodium Dihydrobis(1,2,3-Benzotriazolyl)Borate Ligand And Its Transition Metal Complexes, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, M. M. Rahman, Y. B. Hahn

Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan

The title ligand, sodium dihydrobis(1,2,3-benzotriazolyl) borate, Na[H2B(BTz)2],was synthesized by refluxing 1 mole of sodium borohydride with 2 moles of 1,2,3- benzotriazole in toluene. The ligand shows ample reactivity towards Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) metal ions and forms stable complexes. The ligand and its metal complexes were characterized by physico-hemical and spectroscopic techniques. All the complexes of divalent metal ions are tetrahedral except for Cu(II), which has been proposed to have a square-planar geometry. The complexes of Cr(III) and Fe(III) appear to have an octahedralge ometry. The magnitude of molar conductance of 10−3 M …
