The development of a novel architecture called Wireless Ad-hoc Control Networks (WACNets) is reported. WACNet (Wireless Ad-hoc Control Network) is a novel concept developed by Intelligent Mechatronics Research Centre, University of Wollongong, towards providing a framework for highly distributed intelligent wireless control networks. A WACNet consists of intelligent nodes based on IEEE 1451 Smart Sensor with a wireless means of communication (BlueTooth). The focus in this paper is on designing a suitable wireless communication system for this network. Deposition of prions into the environment by infected animals may contribute to transmission and spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) among free-ranging cervids, and identification of such environmental sources may provide an avenue for managing CWD. We evaluated the role that wallow use by elk (Cervus elaphus) may play in CWD transmission by monitoring wallows with animal-activated cameras throughout their period of use. We monitored 39 wallows from 5 August 2005 to 14 October 2005. Elk visited 20 sites; we recorded 22 events when only male elk wallowed and 374 additional events when male and female elk had …

The wells operated by the Jamaica Water Supply Company in Queens represent the only large scale utilization of groundwater for public water supply in New York City in recent years. These wells were shut down, for the most part, beginning in 1996. Since that time, water table elevations in the area, which had been drawn down by the withdrawal activity of the Jamaica Water Supply Company, have risen significantly causing some high groundwater problems, including flooding of basements. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) has held public hearings on a contemplated resumption of ground water withdrawal in …

This thesis introduces new algorithms for solving curve/curve and ray/surface intersections. These algorithms introduce the concept of a geometric interval to extend the technique of Bézier clipping. A geometric interval is used to tightly bound a curve or surface or to contain a point on a curve or surface. Our algorithms retain the desirable characteristics of the Bézier clipping technique such as ease of implementation and the guarantee that all intersections over a given interval will be found. However, these new algorithms generally exhibit cubic convergence, improving on the observed quadratic convergence rate of Bézier clipping. This is achieved without …

First-principles calculations of electron tunneling transport in nanoscale Ni and Co break-junctions reveal strong dependence of the conductance on the magnetization direction, an effect known as tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance TAMR. An important aspect of this phenomenon stems from resonant states localized in the electrodes near the junction break. The energy and broadening of these states is strongly affected by the magnetization orientation due to spin-orbit coupling, causing TAMR to be sensitive to bias voltage on a scale of a few millivolts. This Letter presents the first strong evidence for the resolution of the excited B mesons B1 and B2* as two separate states in fully reconstructed decays to B+(*). The mass of B1 is measured to be 5720.6 ± 2.4 ± 1.4 MeV=c 2 and the mass difference ΔM between B2* and B1 is 26.2 ± 3.1 ± 0.9 MeV/c 2, giving the mass of the B2* as 5746.8 ± 2.4 ± 1.7 MeV/c 2. The assumption in economics of a representative agent is often made. However, it is a very rigid assumption. Hall and Jones (2004b) presented an economic model that essentially provided for a representative agent for each age group in determining the group's health level function. Our work seeks to extend their theoretical version of the model by allowing for two representative agents for each age—one for each of “Healthy” and “Sick” risk-factor groups—to allow for additional heterogeneity in the populace. Measurement Of The Top Quark Mass In The Dilepton Channel, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

We present a measurement of the top quark mass in the dilepton channel based on approximately 370 pb-1 of data collected by the DØ experiment during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We employ two different methods to extract the top quark mass. We show that both methods yield consistent results using ensemble tests of events generated with the DØ Monte Carlo simulation. We combine the results from the two methods to obtain a top quark mass mt = 178.1 ± 8.2 GeV. The statistical uncertainty is 6.7 GeV and the systematic uncertainty is 4.8 GeV.

Background: Metabolic variations exist between the methionine salvage pathway of humans and a number of plants and microbial pathogens. 5-Methylthioribose (MTR) kinase is a key enzyme required for methionine salvage in plants and many bacteria. The absence of a mammalian homolog suggests that MTR kinase is a good target for the design of specific herbicides or antibiotics.

Results: The structure of Arabidopsis thaliana MTR kinase co-crystallized with ATPγS and MTR has been determined at 1.9 Å resolution. The structure is similar to B. subtilis MTR kinase and has the same protein kinase fold observed in other evolutionarily related …

This paper develops a Bayesian ordinal regression model for the maladaptive subscales of the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning (ICAP). Because the maladaptive behavior section of the ICAP contains ordinal data, current analysis strategies combine all the subscales into three indices, making the data more interval in nature. Regular MANOVA tools are subsequently used to create a regression model for these indices. This paper uses ordinal regression to analyze each original scale separately. Selecting an effective method for combining the votes of classifiers in an ensemble can have a significant impact on the overall classification accuracy an ensemble is able to achieve. With some methods, the ensemble cannot even achieve as high a classification accuracy as the most accurate individual classifying component. To address this issue, we present the strategy of Heuristic Weighted Voting, a technique that uses heuristics to determine the confidence that a classifier has in its predictions on an instance by instance basis. Using these heuristics to weight the votes in an ensemble results in an overall average increase in …

A High Repetition Rate Time-Of-Flight Electron Energy Analyzer, Shawn A. Hilbert, Brett E. Barwick, M. Fabrikant, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, Herman Batelaan

We demonstrate a time-of-flight electron energy analyzer that operates at an 80 MHz repetition rate. The analyzer yields an energy resolution of 40 meV for 3 eV electrons. The energy resolution limit is dominated by the detector time (or temporal) resolution. With a currently available detector with a temporal resolution of 100 ps, we predict an energy resolution of less than 1 meV for 200 meV electrons. This makes high repetition rate time-of-flight energy analyzers a promising low-technology alternative to current state-of-the-art techniques.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] copolymer films have been patterned by microimprinting with excellent quality of pattern transferring. Ferroelectricity of the imprinted films has been confirmed by ferroelectric hysteresis and surface potential measurement, and very good correlation is observed between remnant polarization and surface potential of the imprinted films. Imprinted P(VDF-TrFE) films show high remnant polarization and high poling-induced surface potential when the imprinting temperature is around 140 °C, suggesting that 140 °C is the optimal imprinting temperature for P(VDF-TrFE) films. The patterned ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) films can be used for a wide range of applications.
