The complex correlation of structure and magnetism in highly coercive monoatomic FePt surface alloys is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and ab initio theory. Depending on the specific lateral atomic coordination of Fe either hard magnetic properties comparable to that of bulk FePt or complex noncollinear magnetism due to Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interactions are observed. Our calculations confirm the subtle dependence of the magnetic anisotropy and spin alignment on the local coordination and suggest that 3D stacking of Fe and Pt layers in bulk L10 magnets is not essential to achieve high-anisotropy values.

Validation Of Differential Gene Expression Algorithms: Application Comparing Fold Change Estimation To Hypothesis Testing, David R. Bickel, Corey M. Yanofsky Feb 2009

Validation Of Differential Gene Expression Algorithms: Application Comparing Fold Change Estimation To Hypothesis Testing, David R. Bickel, Corey M. Yanofsky

COBRA Preprint Series

Sustained research on the problem of determining which genes are differentially expressed on the basis of microarray data has yielded a plethora of statistical algorithms, each justified by theory, simulation, or ad hoc validation and yet differing in practical results from equally justified algorithms. The widespread confusion on which method to use in practice has been exacerbated by the finding that simply ranking genes by their fold changes sometimes outperforms popular statistical tests.

Algorithms may be compared by quantifying each method's error in predicting expression ratios, whether such ratios are defined across microarray channels or between two independent groups. For …

Basal Mechanics Of Ice Streams: Insights From The Stick-Slip Motion Of Whillans Ice Stream, West Antarctica, J. Paul Winberry, Sridhar Anandakrishnan, Richard B. Alley, Robert A. Bindschadler, Matt A. King Feb 2009

Basal Mechanics Of Ice Streams: Insights From The Stick-Slip Motion Of Whillans Ice Stream, West Antarctica, J. Paul Winberry, Sridhar Anandakrishnan, Richard B. Alley, Robert A. Bindschadler, Matt A. King

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The downstream portion of Whillans Ice Stream, West Antarctica, moves primarily by stick-slip motion. The observation of stick-slip motion suggests that the bed is governed by velocity-weakening physics and that the basal physics is more unstable than suggested by laboratory studies. The stick-slip cycle of Whillans Ice Plain exhibits substantial variability in both the duration of sticky periods and in slip magnitude. To understand this variability, we modeled the forces acting on the ice stream during the stick phase of the stick-slip cycle. The ocean tides introduce changes in the rate at which stress is applied to the ice plain. …

Vegetation, Environmental Characteristics, And Their Relationships: Variation Within The Annually Flooded Riparian Zones Of The John Day River Basin, Oregon, Samuel J. Hartsfield Feb 2009

Vegetation, Environmental Characteristics, And Their Relationships: Variation Within The Annually Flooded Riparian Zones Of The John Day River Basin, Oregon, Samuel J. Hartsfield

Dissertations and Theses

I hypothesized that vegetation and physical environmental characteristics would differ between the upper and lower extents of the annually flooded riparian zone on the John Day River, and that relationships between species and environmental variables would display differences between these two zones. Vegetation, environmental variables, and relationships between them were assessed for the entire annually flooded riparian zone, and for the proposed upper and lower zones. Data were collected from 60 one-square-meter quadrats: 30 in each the upper and lower zones. Sites were randomly selected and located so that flood duration was roughly equal at all sites within each zone. …

Taxonomy Of Business Ethics Theories, Grace S. Thomson Feb 2009

Taxonomy Of Business Ethics Theories, Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

An increasing interest on ethics in business has resulted in a fruitful production of scholarly research that provides business leaders and decision-makers with references to bridge theory and practice (Cherry, Lee, and Chien, 2003). For an effective application of business ethics theories, it is necessary to comprehend their domains, their external and internal logic, and the specific applications to the ethical issues under analysis (Wempe, 2008).

This document presents a taxonomy of 11 ethical theories applied to business ethics that incorporate grounded theory and conceptual frameworks. As a basis for the construction of this taxonomy, the selection of the theories …

Characterization Of Putative Self-Resistance Genes In The Biosynthetic Gene Cluster Of Hygromycin A From Streptomyces Hygroscopicus Nrrl 2388, Vidya Dhote Feb 2009

Characterization Of Putative Self-Resistance Genes In The Biosynthetic Gene Cluster Of Hygromycin A From Streptomyces Hygroscopicus Nrrl 2388, Vidya Dhote

Dissertations and Theses

Streptomyces hygroscopicus NRRL 2388 produces an aminocyclitol antibiotic called hygromycin A (HA), which targets bacterial protein synthesis by inhibiting the peptidyl transferase reaction. The hyg6, hygl9, hyg21, hyg28, and hyg29 genes in the biosynthetic gene cluster of HA are predicted to confer self-resistance to the producer strain by different mechanisms. Targeted gene disruptions and in vitro characterization of recombinant proteins were carried out to elucidate the functions of these genes. The hyg21 gene encodes an O-phosphotransferase with a proposed role in HA inactivation by phosphorylation. Disruption of hyg21 led to a significant decrease in HA production but did not …

A Unified Approach To Gpu-Accelerated Aerial Video Enhancement Techniques, Stephen Thayn Cluff Feb 2009

A Unified Approach To Gpu-Accelerated Aerial Video Enhancement Techniques, Stephen Thayn Cluff

Theses and Dissertations

Video from aerial surveillance can provide a rich source of data for analysts. From the time-critical perspective of wilderness search and rescue operations, information extracted from aerial videos can mean the difference between a successful search and an unsuccessful search. When using low-cost, payload-limited mini-UAVs, as opposed to more expensive platforms, several challenges arise, including jittery video, narrow fields of view, low resolution, and limited time on screen for key features. These challenges make it difficult for analysts to extract key information in a timely manner. Traditional approaches may address some of these issues, but no existing system effectively addresses …

Efficient Evaluation Of Ranking Procedures When The Number Of Units Is Large With Application To Snp Identification, Thomas A. Louis, Ingo Ruczinski Feb 2009

Efficient Evaluation Of Ranking Procedures When The Number Of Units Is Large With Application To Snp Identification, Thomas A. Louis, Ingo Ruczinski

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Simulation-based assessment is a popular and frequently necessary approach to evaluation of statistical procedures. Sometimes overlooked is the ability to take advantage of underlying mathematical relations and we focus on this aspect. We show how to take advantage of large-sample theory when conducting a simulation using the analysis of genomic data as a motivating example. The approach uses convergence results to provide an approximation to smaller-sample results, results that are available only by simulation. We consider evaluating and comparing a variety of ranking-based methods for identifying the most highly associated SNPs in a genome-wide association study, derive integral equation representations …

Survival Analysis With High-Dimensional Covariates: An Application In Microarray Studies, David Engler, Yi Li Feb 2009

Survival Analysis With High-Dimensional Covariates: An Application In Microarray Studies, David Engler, Yi Li

Faculty Publications

Use of microarray technology often leads to high-dimensional and low-sample size (HDLSS) data settings. A variety of approaches have been proposed for variable selection in this context. However, only a small number of these have been adapted for time-to-event data where censoring is present. Among standard variable selection methods shown both to have good predictive accuracy and to be computationally efficient is the elastic net penalization approach. In this paper, adaptations of the elastic net approach are presented for variable selection both under the Cox proportional hazards model and under an accelerated failure time (AFT) model. Assessment of the two …

Measures To Summarize And Compare The Predictive Capacity Of Markers, Wen Gu, Margaret Pepe Feb 2009

Measures To Summarize And Compare The Predictive Capacity Of Markers, Wen Gu, Margaret Pepe

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The predictive capacity of a marker in a population can be described using the population distribution of risk (Huang et al., 2007; Pepe et al., 2008a; Stern, 2008). Virtually all standard statistical summaries of predictability and discrimination can be derived from it (Gail and Pfeiffer, 2005). The goal of this paper is to develop methods for making inference about risk prediction markers using summary measures derived from the risk distribution. We describe some new clinically motivated summary measures and give new interpretations to some existing statistical measures. Methods for estimating these summary measures are described along with distribution theory that …

The Evolution Of Late-Time Optical Emission From Sn 1979c, Dan Milisavljevic, Robert A. Fesen, Robert P. Kirshner, Peter Challis

Dartmouth Scholarship

Optical spectra of the bright Type II-L supernova SN 1979C obtained in April 2008 with the 6.5 m Multiple Mirror Telescope are compared with archival late-time spectra to follow the evolution of its optical emission over the age range of 11-29 years. We estimate an Hα flux decrease of around 35% from 1993 to 2008 but noticeable increases in the strength of blueshifted emission of forbidden oxygen lines. While the maximum expansion of the broad ~6700 km s–1 Hα emission appears largely unchanged from 1993, we find a significant narrowing of the double-peaked emission profiles in the [O I] …

Quasi-Anosov Diffeomorphisms Of 3-Manifolds, Todd L. Fisher, Hertz M. Rodriguez Feb 2009

Quasi-Anosov Diffeomorphisms Of 3-Manifolds, Todd L. Fisher, Hertz M. Rodriguez

Faculty Publications

In 1969, Hirsch posed the following problem: given a diffeomorphism f:N → N and a compact invariant hyperbolic set Λ of f, describe the topology of Λ and the dynamics of f restricted to Λ. We solve the problem where Λ=M^3 is a closed 3-manifold: if M^3 is orientable, then it is a connected sum of tori and handles; otherwise it is a connected sum of tori and handles quotiented by involutions.

Synthesis Of Aptamer-Porphyrin Conjugate For Photodynamic Therapy & Synthesis And Stability Of Mixed Thiol/Lipid Coated Gold Nanoparticles, Sarita Sitaula Feb 2009

Synthesis Of Aptamer-Porphyrin Conjugate For Photodynamic Therapy & Synthesis And Stability Of Mixed Thiol/Lipid Coated Gold Nanoparticles, Sarita Sitaula

Dissertations and Theses

An underlying problem in Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is low selectivity of photosensitizers currently being used for the treatment of tumors. This thesis is focused on developing new PDT drugs and is divided into two parts. The first chapter describes a method for selective delivery of the photosensitizers to the tumor site by conjugating porphyrins to an aptamer for the targeted PDT. To achieve this, a novel synthesis of 2'-porphyrin-modified uridine was developed. The 3'-H-phosphonate derivatives of both 2'-porphyrin and 2'-dithiaporphyrin modified uridine were also synthesized. The 3'41-phosphonate derivative of 2'-porphyrin-modified uridine was conjugated to a 19-mer DNA and to a …

Crm And Spiritual Care, Gary L. James Feb 2009

Crm And Spiritual Care, Gary L. James

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The Spiritual Care Department at Senior Care Residences does not have a computer database to record the chaplain's time during residents' visits, working with volunteers, and working with current or potential donors. This poses several problems such as keeping track of visits. Tracking this information will allow the chaplain to know whom he/she has provided spiritual care. This information is also critical for the volunteers he/she works with and current and potential donors. By implementing a CRM(Customer Relationship Management) application, the chaplain will have this information to help make informed decisions, and the automated computer system will help make recommendations.

Pat: Towards Flexible Verification Under Fairness, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Jun Pang Feb 2009

Pat: Towards Flexible Verification Under Fairness, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Jun Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent development on distributed systems has shown that a variety of fairness constraints (some of which are only recently defined) play vital roles in designing self-stabilizing population protocols. Current practice of system analysis is, however, deficient under fairness. In this work, we present PAT, a toolkit for flexible and efficient system analysis under fairness. A unified algorithm is proposed to model check systems with a variety of fairness effectively in two different settings. Empirical evaluation shows that PAT complements existing model checkers in terms of fairness. We report that previously unknown bugs have been revealed using PAT against systems functioning …

Measurement Of The Semileptonic Branching Ratio Of BS0 To An Orbitally Excited DS** State: Br(BS0DS1-(2536) Μ +Νx), V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration Feb 2009

Measurement Of The Semileptonic Branching Ratio Of BS0 To An Orbitally Excited DS** State: Br(BS0 → DS1-(2536) Μ +Νx), V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

In a data sample of approximately 1.3 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector between 2002 and 2006, the orbitally excited charm state Ds1±(2536) has been observed with a measured mass of 2535.7 ± 0.6(stat) ± 0.5(syst) MeV=c2 via the decay mode Bs0Ds1-(2536)μ+νμX. A first measurement is made of the branching ratio product Br(bDs1-(2536) μ + μ+νμX) x Br(Ds1-D*-KS0). Assuming that Ds1 …

Search For Associated W And Higgs Boson Production In Pp Collisions At √S = 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present results of a search for WH → ℓνbb production in pp collisions based on the analysis of 1.05 fb-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, using a neural network for separating the signal from backgrounds. No signal-like excess is observed, and we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the WH production cross section multiplied by the branching ratio for Hbb for Higgs boson masses between 100 and 150 GeV. For a mass of 115 GeV, we obtain an observed (expected) limit of 1.5 (1.4) pb, a factor of 11.4 …

Search For Large Extra Spatial Dimensions In The Dielectron And Diphoton Channels In Pp Collisions At √S = 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration Feb 2009

Search For Large Extra Spatial Dimensions In The Dielectron And Diphoton Channels In Pp Collisions At √S = 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report on a search for large extra spatial dimensions in the dielectron and diphoton channels using a data sample of 1.05 fb-1 of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The invariant mass spectrum of the data agrees well with the prediction of the standard model. We find the most restrictive 95% C.L. lower limits on the effective Planck scale between 2.1 and 1.3 TeV for 2 to 7 extra dimensions.

Search For Neutral Higgs Bosons At High Tanβ In The B(H/H/A) → BΤ+ Τ- Channel, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

The first search in pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV TeV for the production of neutral Higgs bosons in association with bottom quarks and decaying in two tau leptons is presented. The cross section for this process is enhanced in many extensions of the standard model, such as its minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM) at large tanβ. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 328 pb-1, were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. An upper limit is set on the production cross section of neutral Higgs bosons in the mass range of …

Separation Of Topographic Features From Magnetic Force Images Using Capacitive Coupling Effect, Byung I. Kim Feb 2009

Separation Of Topographic Features From Magnetic Force Images Using Capacitive Coupling Effect, Byung I. Kim

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Separation of topographic features from magnetic images has been an issue for the past two decades in magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The frequent pickups of the topographic features are interpreted as transitions of the tip between bistable states of the tip-sample assembly in the noncontact and tapping regions. MFM using electrostatic force modulation demonstrates the separation of the topographic features from the magnetic images by removing the tapping state from the bistable states through the introduction of a capacitive coupling.

First-Order Bias Correction For Fractionally Integrated Time Series, Jaechoul Lee, Kyungduk Ko Feb 2009

First-Order Bias Correction For Fractionally Integrated Time Series, Jaechoul Lee, Kyungduk Ko

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Most of the long memory estimators for stationary fractionally integrated time series models are known to experience non-negligible bias in small and finite samples. Simple moment estimators are also vulnerable to such bias, but can easily be corrected. In this paper, we propose bias reduction methods for a lag-one sample autocorrelation-based moment estimator. In order to reduce the bias of the moment estimator, we explicitly obtain the exact bias of lag-one sample autocorrelation up to the order n−1. An example where the exact first-order bias can be noticeably more accurate than its asymptotic counterpart, even for large samples, is presented. …

Hygroscopic Behavior And Liquid-Layer Composition Of Aerosol Particles Generated From Natural And Artificial Seawater, Matthew E. Wise, Evelyn J. Freney, Corey A. Tyree, Jonathan O. Allen, Scot T. Martin, Lynn M. Russell, Peter R. Buseck Feb 2009

Hygroscopic Behavior And Liquid-Layer Composition Of Aerosol Particles Generated From Natural And Artificial Seawater, Matthew E. Wise, Evelyn J. Freney, Corey A. Tyree, Jonathan O. Allen, Scot T. Martin, Lynn M. Russell, Peter R. Buseck

CUP Faculty Research

Sea-salt aerosol (SSA) particles affect the Earth's radiative balance and moderate heterogeneous chemistry in the marine boundary layer. Using conventional and environmental transmission electron microscopes (ETEM), we investigated the hygroscopic growth and liquid-layer compositions of particles generated from three types of aqueous salt solutions: sodium chloride, laboratory-synthesized seawater (S-SSA particles), and natural seawater (N-SSA particles). Three levels of morphological change were observed with the ETEM as the laboratory-generated particles were exposed to increasing relative humidity (RH). The first level, onset of observable morphological changes, occurred on average at 70, 48, and 35% RH for the NaCl, S-SSA, and N-SSA particles, …
