In order to investigate spin-charge coupling in multiferroic oxides, we measured the optical properties of BiFeO3. Although the direct 300 K charge gap is observed at 2.67 eV, absorption onset actually occurs at much lower energy with Fe3+ excitations at 1.41 and 1.90 eV. Temperature and magnetic-field-induced spectral changes reveal complex interactions between on-site crystal-field and magnetic excitations in the form of magnon sidebands. We employ the sensitivity of these magnon sidebands to map out the magnetic-fieldtemperature phase diagram which demonstrates optical evidence for spin spiral quenching above 20 T and suggests a spin domain reorientation near …

Dzyaloshinski–Moriya Micromagnetics Of Magnetic Surface Alloys, Ralph Skomski, Jan Honolka, S. Bornermann, H. Ebert, Axel Enders

Ralph Skomski Publications

The magnetism of magnetic surface alloys such as Fe–Pt on Pt(997) has been investigated by micromagnetic model calculations. A unique feature of some of these systems is that interatomic exchange, magnetocrystalline anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinski–Moriya (DM) interactions are all of comparable magnitude, of the order of 0.5 meV. This leads to an intriguing nanoscale interplay between ordinary magnetization states and noncollinear spin structures. We identify two cases where the latter dominate. First, for sufficiently strong DM interaction, the zero-field spin structures change from uniform to a canted state with an incommensurate wave vector. Second, a similar transition occurs for weak DM …

Predicted Fire Behavior And Societal Benefits In Three Eastern Sierra Nevada Vegetation Types, Christopher Dicus, Kenneth Delfino, David R. Weise

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

We investigated potential fire behavior and various societal benefits (air pollution removal, carbon sequestration, and carbon storage) provided by woodlands of pinyon pine (Pinus monophylla) and juniper (Juniperus californica), shrublands of Great Basin sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) and rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa), and recently burned annual grasslands near a wildland-urban interface (WUI) community in the high desert of the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Fire behavior simulations showed that shrublands had the greatest flame lengths under low wind conditions, and that pinyon-juniper woodlands had the greatest flame lengths when winds exceeded 25 km hr-1 …

Multiscale Registration Of Planning Ct And Daily Cone Beam Ct Images For Adaptive Radiation Therapy, Dana C. Paquin, Doron Levy, Lei Xing

Mathematics

Adaptive radiation therapy (ART) is the incorporation of daily images in the radiotherapy treatment process so that the treatment plan can be evaluated and modified to maximize the amount of radiation dose to the tumor while minimizing the amount of radiation delivered to healthy tissue. Registration of planning images with daily images is thus an important component of ART. In this article, the authors report their research on multiscale registration of planning computed tomography (CT) images with daily cone beam CT (CBCT) images. The multiscale algorithm is based on the hierarchical multiscale image decomposition of E. Tadmor, S. Nezzar, and …

Research Scholars in Residence

This article describes an optimal method (conflation) to consolidate data from different experiments, and illustrates the advantages of conflation by graphical examples involving gaussian input distributions, and by a concrete numerical example involving the values of lattice spacing of silicon crystals used in determination of the current values of Planck's constant and the Avogadro constant.

The Theory Of Interval Probabilistic Logic Programs, Alex Dekhtyar, Michael I. Dekhtyar Jan 2009

The Theory Of Interval Probabilistic Logic Programs, Alex Dekhtyar, Michael I. Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Two approaches to logic programming with probabilities emerged over time: Bayesian reasoning and probabilistic satisfiability (PSAT). The attractiveness of the former is in tying the logic programming research to the body of work on Bayes networks. The second approach ties, from the point of view of computation, reasoning about probabilities to linear programming, and allows for natural expression of imprecision in probabilities via the use of intervals. In this paper we construct precise semantics for one PSAT-based formalism for reasoning with interval probabilities: disjunctive probabilistic logic programs (dp-programs). It has two origins: (1) disjunctive logic programs, a powerful language for …

Energetic Path Finding Across Massive Terrain Data, Andrew Tsui, Zoë J. Wood Jan 2009

Energetic Path Finding Across Massive Terrain Data, Andrew Tsui, Zoë J. Wood

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Throughout history, the primary means of transportation for humans has been on foot. We present a software tool which can help visualize and predict where historical trails might lie through the use of a human-centered cost metric, with an emphasis on the ability to generate paths which traverse several thousand kilometers. To accomplish this, various graph simplification and path approximation algorithms are explored. We show that it is possible to restrict the search space for a path finding algorithm while not sacrificing accuracy. Combined with a multi-threaded variant of Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm, we present a tool capable of computing …

Statistical Properties Of Gamma‐Ray Burst Polarization, Kenji Toma, Takanori Sakamoto, Bing Zhang, J E. Hill, Mark L. Mcconnell, Peter F. Bloser, Ryo Yamazaki, Kunihito Ioka, Takashi Nakamura

Space Science Center

The emission mechanism and the origin and structure of magnetic fields in gamma‐ray burst (GRB) jets are among the most important open questions concerning the nature of the central engine of GRBs. In spite of extensive observational efforts, these questions remain to be answered and are difficult or even impossible to infer with the spectral and lightcurve information currently collected. Polarization measurements will lead to unambiguous answers to several of these questions. Recent developments in X‐ray and γ‐ray polarimetry techniques have demonstrated a significant increase in sensitivity enabling several new mission concepts, e.g. POET (Polarimeters for Energetic Transients), providing wide …

Macroalgae And Eelgrass Mapping In Great Bay Estuary Using Aisa Hyperspectral Imagery., Shachak Pe'eri, John Ru Morrison, Frederick T. Short, Arthur C. Mathieson, Phil Trowbridge

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Results Increases in nitrogen concentration and declining eelgrass beds in Great Bay Estuary have been observed in the last decades. These two parameters are clear indicators of the impending eutrophication for New Hampshire’s estuaries. The NH Department of Environmental Services (DES) in collaboration with the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership adopted the assumption that eelgrass survival can be used as the target for establishing numeric water quality criteria for nutrients in NH’s estuaries. One of the hypotheses put forward regarding eelgrass decline is that an eutrophication response to nutrient increases in the Great Bay Estuary has been the proliferation of nuisance …

Improving Effort Estimation By Voting Software Estimation Models, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Venus Marza

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Estimating software development effort is an important task in the management of large software projects. The task is challenging, and it has been receiving the attentions of researchers ever since software was developed for commercial purpose. A number of estimation models exist for effort prediction. However, there is a need for novel models to obtain more accurate estimations. The primary purpose of this study is to propose a precise method of estimation by selecting the most popular models in order to improve accuracy. Consequently, the final results are very precise and reliable when they are applied to a real dataset …

Materials Design Of Half-Metallic Graphene And Graphene Nanoribbons, Menghao Wu, Xiaojun Wu, Yi Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng Jan 2009

Materials Design Of Half-Metallic Graphene And Graphene Nanoribbons, Menghao Wu, Xiaojun Wu, Yi Gao, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Through patterned chemical modification, we show that both graphene sheets and zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) can be converted to half-metals as long as the unmodified carbon strip (or width of ZGNRs) is sufficiently wide. Periodically functionalized graphene can mimic electronic behavior of edge-modified ZGNRs as the edge-modified zigzag carbon chains effectively divide a graphene sheet into a series of identical ZGNRs.

Co Chemisorption On The Surfaces Of The Golden Cages, Wei Huang, Satya S. Bulusu, Rhitankar Pal, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Lai-Sheng Wang Jan 2009

Co Chemisorption On The Surfaces Of The Golden Cages, Wei Huang, Satya S. Bulusu, Rhitankar Pal, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Lai-Sheng Wang

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of CO chemisorption on the golden cages. We find that the Au17 cage is highly robust and retains its cage structure in Au17 (CO). On the other hand, the Au16 cage is transformed to a structure similar to Au17 upon the adsorption of CO. Au18 is known to consist of two nearly degenerate structures, i.e., a cage and a pyramidal isomer, which coexist in the cluster beam. However, upon CO chemisorption only the cage isomer is observed while the pyramidal …

Allosteric Regulation Of The Primase (Dnag) Activity By The Clamp-Loader (Τ) In Vitro, Kiran Chintakayala, Cristina Machón, Anna Haroniti, Marilyn A. Larson, Steven H. Hinrichs, Mark A. Griep, Panos Soultanas Jan 2009

Allosteric Regulation Of The Primase (Dnag) Activity By The Clamp-Loader (Τ) In Vitro, Kiran Chintakayala, Cristina Machón, Anna Haroniti, Marilyn A. Larson, Steven H. Hinrichs, Mark A. Griep, Panos Soultanas

Mark Griep Publications

During DNA replication the helicase (DnaB) recruits the primase (DnaG) in the replisome to initiate the polymerization of new DNA strands. DnaB is attached to the τ subunit of the clamp-loader that loads the β clamp and interconnects the core polymerases on the leading and lagging strands. The τ–DnaB−DnaG ternary complex is at the heart of the replisome and its function is likely to be modulated by a complex network of allosteric interactions. Using a stable ternary complex comprising the primase and helicase from Geobacillus stearothermophilus and the τ subunit of the clamp-loader from Bacillus subtilis we show that changes …

Directed Test Suite Augmentation, Zhihong Xu, Gregg Rothermel Jan 2009

Directed Test Suite Augmentation, Zhihong Xu, Gregg Rothermel

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

As software evolves, engineers use regression testing to evaluate its fitness for release. Such testing typically begins with existing test cases, and many techniques have been proposed for reusing these cost-effectively. After reusing test cases, however, it is also important to consider code or behavior that has not been exercised by existing test cases and generate new test cases to validate these. This process is known as test suite augmentation. In this paper we present a directed test suite augmentation technique, that utilizes results from reuse of existing test cases together with an incremental concolic testing algorithm to augment …

Exploring Parameterized Relational Consistency, Shant K. Karakashian, Robert J. Woodward, Berthe Y. Choueiry Jan 2009

Exploring Parameterized Relational Consistency, Shant K. Karakashian, Robert J. Woodward, Berthe Y. Choueiry

CSE Technical Reports

Consistency properties and algorithms for achieving them are at the heart of the success of Constraint Programming. For non-binary Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs), the relational-consistency property R(i,j)C of [Dechter and van Beek 1997] may add new non-binary constraints to the constraint network, thus modifying its topology. The domain-filtering properties of [Bessiere et al. 2008] filter the domains of the variables and leave the constraints unchanged but are restricted to combinations of two constraints. We restate the property of m-wise consistency [Gyssens 1986; Jegou 1993] as relational (*,m)-consistency, R(*,m)C. R(*,m)C ensures that any tuple in a relation is consistent in every …

A Hybrid Test Architecture To Reduce Test Application Time In Full Scan Sequential Circuits, Priyankar Ghosh, Srobona Mitra, Indranil Sengupta, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Sharad C. Seth Jan 2009

A Hybrid Test Architecture To Reduce Test Application Time In Full Scan Sequential Circuits, Priyankar Ghosh, Srobona Mitra, Indranil Sengupta, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Sharad C. Seth

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Abstract—Full scan based design technique is widely used to alleviate the complexity of test generation for sequential circuits. However, this approach leads to substantial increase in test application time, because of serial loading of vectors. Although BIST based approaches offer faster testing, they usually suffer from low fault coverage. In this paper, we propose a hybrid test architecture, which achieves significant reduction in test application time. The test suite consists of: (i) some external deterministic test vectors to be scanned in, and (ii) internally generated responses of the CUT to be re-applied as tests iteratively, in functional (non-scan) mode. The …

Spatio-Temporal Event Model For Cyber-Physical Systems, Ying Tan, Mehmet C. Vuran, Steve Goddard Jan 2009

Spatio-Temporal Event Model For Cyber-Physical Systems, Ying Tan, Mehmet C. Vuran, Steve Goddard

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

The emerging Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are envisioned to integrate computation, communication and control with the physical world. Therefore, CPS requires close interactions between the cyber and physical worlds both in time and space. These interactions are usually governed by events, which occur in the physical world and should autonomously be reflected in the cyber-world, and actions, which are taken by the CPS as a result of detection of events and certain decision mechanisms. Both event detection and action decision operations should be performed accurately and timely to guarantee temporal and spatial correctness. This calls for a flexible architecture and task …

Chemistry Publications

Iron oxide nanoparticles were coated with a polymer synthesized from the monomers of styrene, divinylbenzene, and vinylbenzylchloride. The resultant polymer microspheres from synthesis without nanoparticle loading are primarily monodispersed with a diameter of 3.45 μm as measured by scanning electron microscopy. The addition of 1% nanoparticles by mass appears to decrease the size of the microspheres down to 2.04 μm as well as increase the polydispersity. This trend is also seen to continue as you add more nanoparticles to the system going from 3.45 μm with 0% nanoparticles down to below 1 μm for 5% nanoparticles. This indicates that the …

Redistricting Using Heuristic-Based Polygonal Clustering, Deepti Joshi, Leen-Kiat Soh, Ashok K. Samal Jan 2009

Redistricting Using Heuristic-Based Polygonal Clustering, Deepti Joshi, Leen-Kiat Soh, Ashok K. Samal

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Redistricting is the process of dividing a geographic area into districts or zones. This process has been considered in the past as a problem that is computationally too complex for an automated system to be developed that can produce unbiased plans. In this paper we present a novel method for redistricting a geographic area using a heuristic-based approach for polygonal spatial clustering. While clustering geospatial polygons several complex issues need to be addressed – such as: removing order dependency, clustering all polygons assuming no outliers, and strategically utilizing domain knowledge to guide the clustering process. In order to address these …

Continuous And Smooth Potential Energy Surface For Conductorlike Screening Solvation Model Using Fixed Points With Variable Areas, Peifeng Su, Hui Li Jan 2009

Continuous And Smooth Potential Energy Surface For Conductorlike Screening Solvation Model Using Fixed Points With Variable Areas, Peifeng Su, Hui Li

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

Rigorously continuous and smooth potential energy surfaces, as well as exact analytic gradients, are obtained for a conductorlike screening solvation model (CPCM, a variant of the general COSMO) with Hartree–Fock (RHF, ROHF, UHF, and MCSCF) and density functional theory (R-DFT, RO-DFT, and U-DFT) methods using a new tessellation scheme, fixed points with variable areas (FIXPVA). In FIXPVA, spheres centered at atoms are used to define the molecular cavity and surface. The surface of each sphere is divided into 60, 240, or 960 tesserae, which have positions fixed relative to the sphere center and areas scaled by switching functions of their …

Energy Decomposition Analysis Of Covalent Bonds And Intermolecular Interactions, Peifeng Su, Hui Li Jan 2009

Energy Decomposition Analysis Of Covalent Bonds And Intermolecular Interactions, Peifeng Su, Hui Li

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

An energy decomposition analysis method is implemented for the analysis of both covalent bonds and intermolecular interactions on the basis of single-determinant Hartree–Fock (HF) (restricted closed shell HF, restricted open shell HF, and unrestricted open shell HF) wavefunctions and their density functional theory analogs. For HF methods, the total interaction energy from a supermolecule calculation is decomposed into electrostatic, exchange, repulsion, and polarization terms. Dispersion energy is obtained from second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory and coupled-cluster methods such as CCSD and CCSD(T). Similar to the HF methods, Kohn–Sham density functional interaction energy is decomposed into electrostatic, exchange, repulsion, polarization, and dispersion …

A Multi-Step Nmr Screen For The Identification And Evaluation Of Chemical Leads For Drug Discovery, Kelly A. Mercier, Matthew D. Shortridge, Robert Powers

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

A multi-step NMR based screening assay is described for identifying and evaluating chemical leads for their ability to bind a target protein. The multi-step NMR assay provides structure-related information while being an integral part of a structure based drug discovery and design program. The fundamental principle of the multi-step NMR assay is to combine distinct 1D and 2D NMR techniques, in such a manner, that the inherent strengths and weakness associated with each technique is complementary to each other in the screen. By taking advantage of the combined strengths of 1D and 2D NMR experiments, it is possible to minimize …

A Protocol Suite For Wireless Personal Area Networks, Karl E. Persson

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) is an ad hoc network that consists of devices that surround an individual or an object. Bluetooth® technology is especially suitable for formation of WPANs due to the pervasiveness of devices with Bluetooth® chipsets, its operation in the unlicensed Industrial, Scientific, Medical (ISM) frequency band, and its interference resilience. Bluetooth® technology has great potential to become the de facto standard for communication between heterogeneous devices in WPANs.

The piconet, which is the basic Bluetooth® networking unit, utilizes a Master/Slave (MS) configuration that permits only a single master and up to …
