A Max-Min Multiobjective Technique To Optimize Model Based Test Suite, Usman Farooq, Chiou P. Lam Jan 2009

A Max-Min Multiobjective Technique To Optimize Model Based Test Suite, Usman Farooq, Chiou P. Lam

Research outputs pre 2011

Generally, quality software production seeks timely delivery with higher productivity at lower cost. Redundancy in a test suite raises the execution cost and wastes scarce project resources. In model-based testing, the testing process starts with earlier software developmental phases and enables fault detection in earlier phases. The redundancy in the test suites generated from models can be detected earlier as well and removed prior to its execution. The paper presents a novel max-min multiobjective technique incorporated into a test suite optimization framework to find a better trade-off between the intrinsically conflicting goals. For illustration two objectives i.e. coverage and size …

Evolving The Quality Of A Model-Based Test Suite, Usman Farooq, Chiou P. Lam

Research outputs pre 2011

Redundant test cases in newly generated test suites often remain undetected until execution and waste scarce project resources. In model-based testing, the testing process starts early on in the developmental phases and enables early fault detection. The redundancy in the test suites generated from models can be detected earlier as well and removed prior to its execution. The article presents a novel model-based test suite optimization technique involving UML activity diagrams by formulating the test suite optimization problem as an Equality Knapsack Problem. The aim here is the development of a test suite optimization framework that could optimize the model-based …

Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma For Species, Philip Hingston Jan 2009

Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma For Species, Philip Hingston

Research outputs pre 2011

The Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (IPD) is widely used to study the evolution of cooperation between self-interested agents. Existing work asks how genes that code for cooperation arise and spread through a single-species population of IPD playing agents. In this paper, we focus on competition between different species of agents. Making this distinction allows us to separate and examine macroevolutionary phenomena. We illustrate with some species-level simulation experiments with agents that use well-known strategies, and with species of agents that use team strategies.

Environmental Education In Small Business: The Owner-Manager's Perspective, Janice Redmond, Elizabeth Walker Jan 2009

Environmental Education In Small Business: The Owner-Manager's Perspective, Janice Redmond, Elizabeth Walker

Research outputs pre 2011

Traditionally, environmental education has been aimed at the community or in primary schools and governmental pressure to reduce environmental damage has focussed on large businesses. More recently, the role and importance of small business and how to engage them in the environmental debate has come under scrutiny. Researchers have identified education as one method of increasing the understanding of small business owner-managers’ role and knowledge of practices that, when implemented, will reduce the negative impacts of their businesses. However, there is little attention given in the literature to the perspective of the small business owner-manager and environmental education. This research …

Visualisation Of Honeypot Data Using Graphviz And Afterglow, Craig Valli Jan 2009

Visualisation Of Honeypot Data Using Graphviz And Afterglow, Craig Valli

Research outputs pre 2011

This research in progress paper explores the use of Graphviz and Afterglow for the analysis of data emanating from a honeypot system. Honeypot systems gather a wide range of data that is often difficult to readily search for patterns and trends using conventional log file analysis techniques. The data from the honeypots has been statically extracted and processed through Afterglow scripts to produce inputs suitable for use by the DOT graph based tools contained within Graphviz. This paper explores some of the benefits and drawbacks of currently using this type of approach.

Aims. We investigate the optical/near-infrared light curve of the afterglow of GRB 080710 in the context of rising afterglows. Methods. Optical and near-infrared photometry was performed using the seven-channel imager GROND and the Tautenburg Schmidt telescope. X-ray data were provided by the X-ray Telescope onboard the Swift satellite. We construct an empirical light curve model using the available broadband data, which is well-sampled in the time and frequency domains. Results. The optical/NIR light curve of the afterglow of GRB 080710 is dominated by an initial increase in brightness, which smoothly turns over into a shallow power law decay. At around …

Large hysteretic resistance changes are reported on sub-100 nm diameter metallic nanowires including thin dielectric junctions. Bi-stable 50% switching in a double junction geometry is modeled in terms of an occupation-driven metal–insulator transition in one of the two junctions, using the generalized Poisson expressions of Oka and Nagaosa (2005 Phys. Rev. Lett. 95 266403). It illustrates how a band bending scheme can be generalized for strongly correlated electron systems. The magnetic constituents of the nanowires provide a magnetoresistive signature of the two resistance states, confirming our model and enabling a four states device application.

Alignment Of Magnetic Anisotropy Axes In Crystals Of Mn12 Acetate And Mn12-Tbuac Molecular Nanomagnets: Angle-Dependent Ac Susceptibility Study, E Burzurí, Ch Carbonera, F Luis, D Ruiz-Molina, Christos Lampropoulos, G Christou

Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship

We report the results of angular-dependent ac susceptibility experiments performed on two derivatives of Mn12 single-molecular magnets: the well-known Mn12 acetate, which contains disordered acetic acid molecules in interstitial sites of the crystal structure and Mn12-tBuAc, for which solvent molecules are very well ordered in the structure. Our results show (a) that the angular variation is very similar in the two compounds investigated and compatible with a maximum misalignment of the anisotropy axes of less than 3° and (b) that the tunneling rate is faster for the better ordered Mn12-tBuAc compound. These experiments question …

The title compound, C7H8N2O4, crystallizes as a zwitterion, with molecules organized into molecular sheets via carboxyl– carboxylate and N+—H_ _ _carboxylate contacts. These sheets are constructed from translationally related molecules that further link to neighboring motifs via _-stacking [centroid– centroid distance 3.504 (3) A ° ] and weak C—H_ _ _O contacts.

Magnetism Of Tio And Tio2 Nanoclusters, Xiaohui Wei, Ralph Skomski, Balamurugan Balasubramanian, Z. G. Sun, Stephen Ducharme, David J. Sellmyer Jan 2009

Magnetism Of Tio And Tio2 Nanoclusters, Xiaohui Wei, Ralph Skomski, Balamurugan Balasubramanian, Z. G. Sun, Stephen Ducharme, David J. Sellmyer

Ralph Skomski Publications

Nanoclusters of rocksalt TiO, anatase TiO2, and rutile TiO2 were produced by cluster deposition and examined with transmission-electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and magnetization measurements. The clusters are all magnetic at room temperature, but the magnetization is structure-dependent. The hysteresis loops show coercivities that are of the order of 100 Oe and all films show a preferential in-plane magnetization direction. The size dependence of the magnetization was investigated for rutile clusters with average sizes from about 15 to 40 nm. The analysis of the measurements indicates that the magnetism is predominantly located near the surface of the clusters …

Graded Permanent Magnets, Ralph Skomski, J. Hadjipanayis, David J. Sellmyer

Ralph Skomski Publications

The effect of semihard magnetic phases and interfaces on the performance of nanostructured two-phase permanent magnets is investigated by model calculations. In addition to the trivial coercivity increase due to the replacement of soft regions by semihard regions, there is a coercivity enhancement even if the volume-averaged anisotropy is kept constant during the introduction of the semihard phase. A variational approach is used to derive analytical results for representative anisotropy profiles. The improvement is operative on length scales slightly larger than that of the soft phase in hard-soft composites, but the main challenge is to find semihard light or heavy …

Temporal Lenses For Attosecond And Femtosecond Electron Pulses, Shawn A. Hilbert, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, Brett E. Barwick, Herman Batelaan, Ahmed H. Zewail Jan 2009

Temporal Lenses For Attosecond And Femtosecond Electron Pulses, Shawn A. Hilbert, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, Brett E. Barwick, Herman Batelaan, Ahmed H. Zewail

C.J.G.J. Uiterwaal Publications

Here, we describe the ‘‘temporal lens’’ concept that can be used for the focus and magnification of ultrashort electron packets in the time domain. The temporal lenses are created by appropriately synthesizing optical pulses that interact with electrons through the ponderomotive force. With such an arrangement, a temporal lens equation with a form identical to that of conventional light optics is derived. The analog of ray diagrams, but for electrons, are constructed to help the visualization of the process of compressing electron packets. It is shown that such temporal lenses not only compensate for electron pulse broadening due to velocity …

Mining Sky Surveys For Astrophysically Interesting Variable Stars: The Cepheid Period Range, Edward G. Schmidt Jan 2009

Mining Sky Surveys For Astrophysically Interesting Variable Stars: The Cepheid Period Range, Edward G. Schmidt

Edward Schmidt Publications

We have undertaken a project to discover new type II Cepheids in two large-area sky surveys. However, most of the candidates from the surveys differ from type II Cepheids in their amplitude and period distributions and they form a separate, cooler sequence relative to the Cepheids in a temperature-gravity plot. We refer to these objects as "Cepheid-lke" stars. Many exhibit unstable pulsation which we illustrate with representative light curves.

First-Principles Analysis Of Spin-Disorder Resistivity Of Fe And Ni, Aleksander L. Wysocki, Renat F. Sabirianov, Mark Van Schilfgaarde, Kirill D. Belashchenko Jan 2009

First-Principles Analysis Of Spin-Disorder Resistivity Of Fe And Ni, Aleksander L. Wysocki, Renat F. Sabirianov, Mark Van Schilfgaarde, Kirill D. Belashchenko

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Spin-disorder resistivity of Fe and Ni and its temperature dependence are analyzed using noncollinear density functional calculations within the supercell method. Different models of thermal spin disorder are considered, including the mean-field approximation and the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model. If the local moments are kept frozen at their zero-temperature values, very good agreement with experiment is obtained for Fe but for Ni the resistivity at elevated temperatures is significantly overestimated. Agreement with experiment for Fe is improved if the local moments are made self-consistent. The effect of short-range order on spindisorder resistivity is more pronounced in Ni compared to Fe but …

Magnetism Of Chromia From First-Principles Calculations, Siqi Shi, Aleksander L. Wysocki, Kirill D. Belashchenko

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The electronic structure and magnetism of chromia (corundum-type Cr2O3) are studied using full-potential first-principles calculations. The electronic correlations are included within the LSDA+U method. The energies of different magnetic configurations are very well fitted by the Heisenberg Hamiltonian with strong exchange interaction with two nearest neighbors and additional weak interaction up to the fifth neighbor shell. These energies are insensitive to the position of the oxygen states, indicating that magnetism in Cr2O3 is dominated by direct exchange. The Néel temperature is calculated using the pair-cluster approximation for localized quantum spins of magnitude 3/2. …

Feynman’S Relativistic Electrodynamics Paradox And The Aharonov-Bohm Effect, Adam Caprez, Herman Batelaan Jan 2009

Feynman’S Relativistic Electrodynamics Paradox And The Aharonov-Bohm Effect, Adam Caprez, Herman Batelaan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

An analysis is done of a relativistic paradox posed in the Feynman Lectures of Physics involving two interacting charges. The physical system presented is compared with similar systems that also lead to relativistic paradoxes. The momentum conservation problem for these systems is presented. The relation between the presented analysis and the ongoing debates on momentum conservation in the Aharonov-Bohm problem is discussed.

Monoclinic Optical Constants, Birefringence, And Dichroism Of Slanted Titanium Nanocolumns Determined By Generalized Ellipsometry, Daniel Schmidt, Benjamin Booso, Tino Hofmann, Eva Schubert, Andrew Sarangan, Mathias Schubert

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry determines the principal monoclinic optical constants of thin films consisting of slanted titanium nanocolumns deposited by glancing angle deposition under 85° incidence and tilted from the surface normal by 47°. Form birefringence measured for wavelengths from 500 to 1000 nm renders the Ti nanocolumns monoclinic absorbing crystals with c-axis along the nanocolumns, b-axis parallel to the film interface, and 67.5° monoclinic angle between the aand c-axes. The columnar thin film reveals anomalous optical dispersion, extreme birefringence, strong dichroism, and differs completely from bulk titanium. Characteristic bulk interband transitions are absent in the spectral range investigated.

Movements of deer can affect population dynamics, spatial redistribution, and transmission and spread of diseases. Our goal was to model the movement of deer in Nebraska in an attempt to predict the potential for spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) into eastern Nebraska. We collared and radio-tracked >600 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in Nebraska during 1990–2006.We observed large displacements (>10 km) for both species and sexes of deer, including migrations up to 100 km and dispersals up to 50 km. Average distance traveled between successive daily locations was 166m for …

Using Paired Comparison Matrices To Estimate Parameters Of The Partial Credit Rasch Measurement Model For Rater-Mediated Assessments, Mary Garner, George Engelhard Jr. Jan 2009

Using Paired Comparison Matrices To Estimate Parameters Of The Partial Credit Rasch Measurement Model For Rater-Mediated Assessments, Mary Garner, George Engelhard Jr.

Faculty Articles

The purpose of this paper is to describe a technique for estimating the parameters of a Rasch model that accommodates ordered categories and rater severity. The technique builds on the conditional pairwise algorithm described by Choppin (1968, 1985) and represents an extension of a conditional algorithm described by Garner and Engelhard (2000, 2002) in which parameters appear as the eigenvector of a matrix derived from paired comparisons. The algorithm is used successfully to recover parameters from a simulated data set. No one has previously described such an extension of the pairwise algorithm to a Rasch model that includes both ordered …

Positive Solutions For The (N, P) Boundary Value Problem, Bo Yang

Faculty Articles

We consider the (n, p) boundary value problem in this paper. Some new upper estimates to positive solutions for the problem are obtained. Existence and nonexistence results for positive solutions of the problem are obtained by using the Krasnosel'skii fixed point theorem. An example is included to illustrate the results.

Persuading Consumers To Form Precise Search Engine Queries, Gondy Leroy

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Today’s search engines provide a single textbox for searching. This input method has not changed in decades and, as a result, consumer search behaviour has not changed either: few and imprecise keywords are used. Especially with health information, where incorrect information may lead to unwise decisions, it would be beneficial if consumers could search more precisely. We evaluated a new user interface that supports more precise searching by using query diagrams. In a controlled user study, using paper-based prototypes, we compared searching with a Google interface with drawing new or modifying template diagrams. We evaluated consumer willingness and ability to …

Variability In Juvenile Growth, Mortality, Maturity, And Abundance Of American Shad And Blueback Herring In Virginia, Troy D. Tuckey Jan 2009

Variability In Juvenile Growth, Mortality, Maturity, And Abundance Of American Shad And Blueback Herring In Virginia, Troy D. Tuckey

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Young-of-year (YOY) population dynamics of American shad and blueback herring in Virginia's rivers were examined with an emphasis on variability in growth and mortality rates. In addition, an analysis was conducted to relate juvenile abundance indices of American shad to adult indices to establish a stock-recruitment relationship. to accomplish the stock recruitment relationship, an additional study that examined maturation schedules and inter-annual variability in maturation schedules among stocks was performed. Results of population dynamics studies found that growth and mortality rates of American shad and blueback herring varied by river and year and that conspecific abundance was an important factor …

Studies Of Magnetotail Dynamics And Energy Evolution During Substorms Using Mhd Simulations, S Brogl, Ramon E. Lopez, Michael J. Wiltberger, Hamid K. Rassoul

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We examine the distribution and propagation of energy in the plasma sheet and lobes using observations and simulations for three substorms. The substorms occurred on 9 March 1995, 10 December 1996, and 27 August 2001 and have been simulated using the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry magneto-hydrodynamic code. All three events occur over North America and show a clear substorm current wedge over the ground magnetometer chains of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. The three simulations show the thinning of the plasma sheet during the growth phase of the event and an increase in the relative amount of thermal energy due to the compression of …

Photon-Hadron Jet Correlations In P+P And Au+Au Collisions At √Snn = 200 Gev, Andrew Marshall Adare, Gyöngyi Baksay, László A. Baksay, Klaus Dehmelt, Marcus Hohlmann, S. Rembeczki Jan 2009

Photon-Hadron Jet Correlations In P+P And Au+Au Collisions At √Snn = 200 Gev, Andrew Marshall Adare, Gyöngyi Baksay, László A. Baksay, Klaus Dehmelt, Marcus Hohlmann, S. Rembeczki

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We report the observation at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of suppression of back-to-back correlations in the direct photon+jet channel in Au+Au relative to p+p collisions. Two-particle correlations of direct photon triggers with associated hadrons are obtained by statistical subtraction of the decay photon-hadron (γ-h) background. The initial momentum of the away-side parton is tightly constrained, because the parton-photon pair exactly balance in momentum at leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, making such correlations a powerful probe of the in-medium parton energy loss. The away-side nuclear suppression factor, IAA, in central Au+Au collisions, is 0.32±0.12stat±0.09syst for hadrons of 3

Preliminary Xcov26 Results For Ec14012-1446, Judith L. Provençal, Matt A. Wood, Stéphane Vennes

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

EC14012-1446 is a hydrogen atmosphere (DA) white dwarf pulsator. Its rich pulsation spectrum displays a range of excited modes with complex multiplet structure, in addition to numerous combination frequencies. In April 2008, EC14012-1446 was the primary target of XCOV26. We obtained over 300 hrs of nearly continuous high speed photometry with the goal of using the nonlinear pulse shapes to empirically determine the parameters of the convection zone. The Fourier transform (FT) of the light curve contains power between 1000 to 4000 μHz, with the dominant peak at 1234 μHz. We find 13 independent frequencies distributed in 8 modes, as …

Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit And Adaptive Co-Management: A Case Study Of Narwhal Co-Management In Arctic Bay, Nunavut, Aaron T. Dale

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Since 2001 the community of Arctic Bay, located on north-western Baffin Island, in Nunavut, Canada, has been experimenting with a new approach to narwhal management—‘community-based’ narwhal managemet. The new management system has developed some decision-making powers to the local Hunters’ and Trappers’ Organization, who are empowered/required to draft by-laws to govern the hunt. Community-based narwhal management links local, regional, territorial, and national actors and agencies in a co-management arrangement that draws its powers from, and is steered by, the Nunavut Final Agreement (1993), the comprehensive land claims agreement between the Inuit of Nunavut and Her Majesty the Queen in Right …

Laboratory Studies In Chemically Mediated Phosphorus Removal, Rebecca L. Gilmore

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Chemically mediated phosphorus removal, done during wastewater treatment, is an effective means of reducing nutrient loads to sensitive environments. Although this method of treatment is widely used, the mechanism of removal is poorly understood. Moreover, phosphorus regulations for wastewater effluents are moving to concentration ranges of 10-100 μg P/L (total phosphorus). This is much lower than current regulations (∼0.1 ∼0.2 mg P/L as TP) required by municipalities (Takács et al., 2006a; Murthy et al., 2005). The analytical methods for low level phosphate analysis need to be optimized to perform reliably and accurately at these low levels. To accomplish this, absorbance …
