A multiterminal superconducting device with the S₁IS₂FIS₃ structure (where S, I, and F denote a superconductor, an insulator, and a ferromagnetic material) is fabricated and characterized. Introducing a thin ferromagnetic layer into the middle electrode dramatically reduces parasitic back action of the acceptor junction (S₁IS₂) bias current on the injector junction (S₂FIS₃)current-voltage characteristic as compared with that for the formerly reported quiteron, a device exploiting similar operation principle.

LiBH₄/Al mixtures with various mol ratios were prepared by ball milling. The hydrogen storage properties of the mixtures were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry/ thermogravimetry analyses coupled with mass spectrometry measurements. The phase compositions and chemical state of elements for the LiBH₄/Al mixtures before and after hydrogen desorption and absorption reactions were assessed via powder x-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Dehydrogenation results revealed that LiBH₄ could react with Al to form AlB₂and AlLi compounds with a two-step decomposition, resulting in improved dehydrogenation. YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) films with Zr doping have been prepared successfully by the trifluoroacetate metal-organic deposition (TFA-MOD) method through dissolving Zr acetylacetonate into the precursor solution. Yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ)nanoparticles were detected in the doped YBCO films by XRD. From the analysis of XRD omega and phi scans, the doped films have better out-of-plane and in-plane textures than those of the un-doped YBCO film. Although the doped YBCO films have lower T-c than that of the un-doped YBCO film, a very significant enhancement of normalized J(c) is displayed as compared to the undoped film at applied fields, indicating that an effective pinning force …

Terahertz (THz, 10¹² Hz) frequency radiation has long proven to be elusive relative to microwaves at lower frequenc ies and infrared radiation at higher frequencies. We have investigated several solid-state materials as candidate terahertz-frequency emitters under excitation by ultra-short (12 fs) pulses of near-infrared radiation, and present the results here with a comparison between different emission mechanisms.

We have observed the emission of visible radiation on peeling adhesive tape from a spool. We have found that there is a fluctuation of light intensity in phase with the rotation of the spool from which the tape is being unwound. We have further found that the amount of light emitted initially increases as the unwinding speed is increased, then decreases at higher speeds.

This report provides an assessment of the feasibility of consolidation of public safety dispatch for 14 communities in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The findings are that consolidation of dispatch services among the participating communities would reduce staffing costs by an estimated $1.7 million annually. Consolidation of services would reduce the duplication of services and redundant capital projects. Instead of the duplicate purchase of expensive equipment by several communities, the cost of large capital will be distributed over a larger base of beneficiaries. Centralization will reduce the physical blueprint of dispatch operations which in turn should reduce operating costs such as natural …

The exact chemical nature of the degradation of the DNA molecule in the dry state has not been studied prior. If determined what chemical changes the DNA molecule undergoes, to what degree and in what time frame then protocols can be implemented to bypass the impact of this damage or to repair it when necessary. Ocular wavefront sensing is vital to improving our understanding of the human eye and to developing advanced vision correction methods, such as adaptive optics, customized contact lenses, and customized laser refractive surgery. It is also a necessary technique for high-resolution imaging of the retina. The most commonly used wavefront sensing method is based on the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. Since Junzhong Liang's first application of Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing for the human eye in 1994, the method has quickly gained acceptance and popularity in the ophthalmic industry. Several new experimental results are reported from plasma merging studies at the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) with relevance to collisionless three-dimensional magnetic reconnection in laboratory and space plasmas. First, recent high-resolution velocity measurements of impurity ions using ion Doppler spectroscopy (IDS) show bi-directional outflow jets at 40 km/s (nearly the Alfven speed). The SSX IDS instrument measures with 1 mu s or better time resolution the width and Doppler shift of the C-III impurity (H plasma) 229.7 nm line to determine the temperature and line-averaged flow velocity during spheromak merging events. Typically, sensors should be very low cost, low power (essentially self-sustaining), yet very rugged and reliable. Epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity in breast carcinoma encompasses the phenotypic spectrum whereby epithelial carcinoma cells within a primary tumor acquire mesenchymal features and re-epithelialize to form a cohesive secondary mass at a metastatic site. Such plasticity has implications in progression of breast carcinoma to metastasis, and will likely influence response to therapy. The transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of molecular and cellular processes that underlie breast cancer and result in characteristic changes in cell behavior can be monitored using an increasing array of marker proteins. Amongst these markers exists the potential for emergent prognostic, predictive and therapeutic targeting.

Nano-indentation characterization studies on epoxy hydro gels used for soft tissue applications are conducted using atomic force microscope (AFM). Two kinds of hydro gels: (a) plain epoxy hydro gels, and (b) epoxy hydro gels reinforced with three-dimensional polyurethane fiber pattern are considered in this study. The three-dimensional fiber pattern is generated using rapid robo-casting technique. Again these two hydro gel types are tested under five different conditions: (a) dry gel, (b) saturated with certain percentage of water, (c) saturated with 100% water, (d) 100% partially immersed in water, and (e) 100% fully immersed in water.
