Learning Semantic Features For Visual Recognition, Jingen Liu Jan 2009

Learning Semantic Features For Visual Recognition, Jingen Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Visual recognition (e.g., object, scene and action recognition) is an active area of research in computer vision due to its increasing number of real-world applications such as video (image) indexing and search, intelligent surveillance, human-machine interaction, robot navigation, etc. Effective modeling of the objects, scenes and actions is critical for visual recognition. Recently, bag of visual words (BoVW) representation, in which the image patches or video cuboids are quantized into visual words (i.e., mid-level features) based on their appearance similarity using clustering, has been widely and successfully explored. The advantages of this representation are: no explicit detection of objects or …

Zinc And Copper Isotopes As Tracers Of Anthropogenic Contamination In A Sediment Core From An Urban Lake, Anita Thapalia Jan 2009

Zinc And Copper Isotopes As Tracers Of Anthropogenic Contamination In A Sediment Core From An Urban Lake, Anita Thapalia

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Concentration data alone are often insufficient to resolve metal sources. This study applies stable Zn and Cu isotopes to fingerprint and track the sources of these metals in a sediment core from Lake Ballinger near Seattle, Washington, USA. The base of the Lake Ballinger core pre-dates settlement in the region, while the upper sections record the impact of atmospheric emissions from the nearby Tacoma smelter, as well as Cu and Zn inputs from urban sources. δ66Zn and δ65Cu varied by 0.42 / and 0.29 /, respectively, over the >300 year core record. Isotopic changes were correlated …

Using Chromium Stable Isotopes To Monitor Chromium Reactive Transport: Oxidation Experiments And Field Studies, Alejandro Villalobos Aragon Jan 2009

Using Chromium Stable Isotopes To Monitor Chromium Reactive Transport: Oxidation Experiments And Field Studies, Alejandro Villalobos Aragon

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Chromium (Cr) is a common contaminant found at a number of sites globally. Cr sources can be either anthropogenic or natural. Cr occurs in nature in two valences, with Cr(VI) being carcinogenic, more toxic and mobile than Cr(III). Reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) is a common remediation strategy, but monitoring Cr reduction using only concentration and speciation analyses is a difficult endeavor because concentrations can be affected by dilution and advection in addition to reduction. Cr isotopes are fractionated during reduction processes, so monitoring isotopic changes in Cr may be a faster and more effective way to monitor reduction. This …

Accounting For Uncertainty In Ecological Analysis: The Strengths And Limitations Of Hierarchical Statistical Modeling, Noel Cressie, Catherine A. Calder, James S. Clark, Jay M. Ver Hoef, Christopher K. Wikle Jan 2009

Accounting For Uncertainty In Ecological Analysis: The Strengths And Limitations Of Hierarchical Statistical Modeling, Noel Cressie, Catherine A. Calder, James S. Clark, Jay M. Ver Hoef, Christopher K. Wikle

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Analyses of ecological data should account for the uncertainty in the process(es) that generated the data. However, accounting for these uncertainties is a difficult task, since ecology is known for its complexity. Measurement and/or process errors are often the only sources of uncertainty modeled when addressing complex ecological problems, yet analyses should also account for uncertainty in sampling design, in model specification, in parameters governing the specified model, and in initial and boundary conditions. Only then can we be confident in the scientific inferences and forecasts made from an analysis. Probability and statistics provide a framework that accounts for multiple …

Extending The Skill Test For Disease Diagnosis, Shu-Chuan Lin, Paul H. Kvam, Jye-Chyi Lu Jan 2009

Extending The Skill Test For Disease Diagnosis, Shu-Chuan Lin, Paul H. Kvam, Jye-Chyi Lu

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

For diagnostic tests, we present an extension to the skill plot introduced by Briggs and Zaretski (Biometrics 2008; 64:250–261). The method is motivated by diagnostic measures for osteopetrosis in a study summarized by Hans et al. (The Lancet 1996; 348:511–514). Diagnostic test accuracy is typically defined using the area (or partial area) under the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve. If partial area is used, the resulting statistic can be highly subjective because the focus region of the ROC curve corresponds to a set of low false‐positive rates that are chosen by the experimenter. This paper introduces a more …

Catches Of Humpback Whales, Megaptera Novaeangliae, By The Soviet Union And Other Nations In The Southern Ocean, 1947–1973, Phil Clapham, Yuri Mikhalev, Wally Franklin, David Paton, C. Scott Baker, Yulia V. Ivashchenko, Robert L. Brownell Jr. Jan 2009

Catches Of Humpback Whales, Megaptera Novaeangliae, By The Soviet Union And Other Nations In The Southern Ocean, 1947–1973, Phil Clapham, Yuri Mikhalev, Wally Franklin, David Paton, C. Scott Baker, Yulia V. Ivashchenko, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The great whales of the Southern Ocean were extensively exploited by modern whaling methods, with the first catches made in the Falkland Islands Dependencies region of IWC Management Area II in 1904 (Tønnesson and Johnsen, 1982; Hart, 2006). Exploitation went through several phases. Populations of humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae, and blue whales, Balaenoptera musculus, around South Georgia crashed around the time of World War I, and further exploitation occurred in other regions into the 1930’s. There was a hiatus in whaling during World War II, but large-scale catches resumed in Antarctic waters after 1945.

Why We Do It – The University Of South Florida Tampa Library’S Commitment To Open-Access Publishing, Todd A. Chavez

Todd A. Chavez

The University of South Florida Tampa Library's support for open-access content is part of the organization's mission to advance scholarly communication generally and an important element of the Karst Information Portal initiative. As the costs associated with journal subscriptions increase and pressures to ensure unfettered access to high-quality, peer-reviewed research mount, research libraries must partner with scholars to establish sustainable open-access publishing models.

Thermodynamic Properties Of Quasi-Equilibrium Magnons In Crystalline Bulk Materials And Thin Films, Ahmed Sayed Hassan, A. M. El-Badry Jan 2009

Thermodynamic Properties Of Quasi-Equilibrium Magnons In Crystalline Bulk Materials And Thin Films, Ahmed Sayed Hassan, A. M. El-Badry

Turkish Journal of Physics

The temperature dependence of spontaneous magnetization and specific heat for a system of magnons are investigated systematically. The correspondence of this system with the Bose-Einstein condensation phenomenon is used. Calculations are performed for both crystalline bulk materials and thin films. The calculated results are consistent with the available experimental data, indicating that our suggested approach is a suitable one for describing the thermodynamic properties for the magnon system. The thermodynamical parameters for magnons system have many similarities with the thermodynamical parameters for boson atomic gas. Results for crystalline bulk material can be used as a zeroth order approximation in any …

Hopf Quivers And Nichols Algebras In Positive Characteristic, Claude Cibils, Aaron Lauve, Sarah Witherspoon Jan 2009

Hopf Quivers And Nichols Algebras In Positive Characteristic, Claude Cibils, Aaron Lauve, Sarah Witherspoon

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We apply a combinatorial formula of the first author and Rosso, for products in Hopf quiver algebras, to determine the structure of Nichols algebras. We illustrate this technique by explicitly constructing new examples of Nichols algebras in positive characteristic. We further describe the corresponding Radford biproducts and some liftings of these biproducts, which are new finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras.

Magma In A Beaker: Analog Experiments With Water And Various Salts Or Sugar For Teaching Igneous Petrology, John B. Brady Jan 2009

Magma In A Beaker: Analog Experiments With Water And Various Salts Or Sugar For Teaching Igneous Petrology, John B. Brady

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Solutions of water and a salt or sugar make excellent experimental analog magmas for teaching concepts of igneous petrology because of the comparatively low temperatures involved, the simplicity of the apparatus needed, and the responsiveness of familiar chemical systems. Boiling of these aqueous solutions on a hot plate can be used to increase the concentration of a dissolved salt or sugar to levels that may be predicted by steam-saturation curves. Sufficiently concentrated solutions will crystallize, partially or completely, upon cooling to room temperature. Binary temperature–composition phase diagrams for H2O and KCl, NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, …

Role Of Shelf Morphology In Grounding-Line Stability: A Numerical Approach, Rhonika Robinson Jan 2009

Role Of Shelf Morphology In Grounding-Line Stability: A Numerical Approach, Rhonika Robinson

LSU Master's Theses

The main concern of this study is to discover how the transition from a shallow to an overdeepened, foredeepened shelf might affect grounding-line translation of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS). Deep shelves permit a larger influx of relatively warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW), which melts the ice at grounding lines, and thereby, create a potentially unstable situation in which ice retreat may accelerate. Numerical analysis of the responses of marine ice sheets on various shelf profiles confirmed that a change in shelf morphology changes ice sheet dynamics. Ice sheet retreat on an overdeepened, foredeepened shelf is, at least, 3 …

On The Interpretation Of Caribbean Paleo-Temperature Reconstructions During The Younger Dryas, Xiuquan Wan, Ping Chang, R. Saravanan, Rong Zhang, Matthew W. Schmidt Jan 2009

On The Interpretation Of Caribbean Paleo-Temperature Reconstructions During The Younger Dryas, Xiuquan Wan, Ping Chang, R. Saravanan, Rong Zhang, Matthew W. Schmidt

OES Faculty Publications

A conundrum exists regarding whether the sea-surface temperatures decreased or increased over the southern Caribbean and the western Tropical Atlantic region during the Younger Dryas when the North Atlantic cooled substantially and the Atlantic thermohaline circulation was weakened significantly. Despite the proximity of core locations, some proxy reconstructions record a surface cooling, while others indicate a warming. We suggest that this seemingly paradoxical finding may, at least partially, be attributed to the competing physical processes that result in opposing signs of temperature change in the region in response to weakened North Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. Our coupled ocean-atmosphere model experiments …

Studies Of States And State Transitions In Low Mass X-Ray Binaries, Charles Bradley Jan 2009

Studies Of States And State Transitions In Low Mass X-Ray Binaries, Charles Bradley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We investigate the model of a disk/coronal accretion flow into a black hole. We build a numerical code to ascertain whether the inner regions of an accretion disk in X-ray binaries can transform from a cool standard disk to an advection-dominated flow through the known properties of Coulomb interaction in a two-temperature plasma, taking into account viscous heating, standard radiation processes, and thermal conduction. A hot, diffuse corona covering the whole disk is powered by accretion, but it exchanges energy with the underlying cool disk through radiative interactions and conduction. If the accretion rate is low enough, at some intermediate …

Combining Remote Sensing Data And An Inundation Model To Map Tidal Mudflat Regions And Improve Flood Predictions: A Proof Of Concept Demonstration In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Tal Ezer, Hua Liu Jan 2009

Combining Remote Sensing Data And An Inundation Model To Map Tidal Mudflat Regions And Improve Flood Predictions: A Proof Of Concept Demonstration In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Tal Ezer, Hua Liu

CCPO Publications

Accurate flood predictions require high resolution inundation numerical models and detailed coastal and land topography data. However, such data are not always available. A new method to obtain topographic information of flood zones from remote sensing data is demonstrated here for Cook Inlet, Alaska, where tidal range reaches 8-10 m. The moving shoreline is detected from analysis of water coverage in satellite images taken at different tidal stages, and then the shoreline data from different times are combined with water level data from observations and models to produce new topographic maps of previously unobserved mudflats. The remote sensing-based analysis provides …

Addressing The Principles For School Mathematics: A Case Study Of Elementary Teachers Pedagogy And Practices In An Urban High-Poverty School, Robert Q. Berry, Linda Bol, Sueanne E. Mckinney

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

The extent to which four novice teachers assigned to an urban high-poverty school implemented the Principles of School Mathematics during their mathematics instruction program was investigated using a case study design. The research team conducted 36 unannounced observations of the participating teachers and utilized a developed assessment to guide their observations. Results indicated that only one teacher was judged proficient for all the principles. The remaining three teachers fell short in the implementation and direction of the principles. Detailed descriptions of the pedagogical practices of the teachers are provided.

Computational Studies On Fatty Acid Synthesis: From Mechanisms To Drug Design, Matthew Edward Mckenzie Jan 2009

Computational Studies On Fatty Acid Synthesis: From Mechanisms To Drug Design, Matthew Edward Mckenzie

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The first committed steps of the Fatty Acid synthesis pathway involves the de/carboxylation reactions of biotin. By understanding this step, potential novel antimicrobial agents could be discovered. The current tools of drug discovery can only help the research in finding and modifying potential hits. Finding a lead candidate from these programs are often equated to finding a needle in a haystack, which is due to the many assumptions used in molecular docking. The fundamental reaction kinetics can not be described by these techniques and a detailed study of the decarboxylation reaction is investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics. In this …

Continental Shelf Sediment Transport And Depositional Processes On An Energetic, Active Margin: The Waiapu River Shelf, New Zealand, Yanxia Ma Jan 2009

Continental Shelf Sediment Transport And Depositional Processes On An Energetic, Active Margin: The Waiapu River Shelf, New Zealand, Yanxia Ma

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The Waiapu River drains a small mountainous basin, characterized by steep terrain, heavy rainfall, and unconsolidated soft Tertiary mudstone and siltstone. These factors, combined with heavy deforestation over the past 100 years have created one of the world's highest sediment yields. Water discharge of the Waiapu River is very episodic over both inter- and intra-annual timescales, and almost all of the discharge is associated with floods brought by cyclonic storms. The Waiapu River drains an active margin that has a narrow shelf and steep slope. Marine conditions on the Waiapu continental shelf are very energetic, with strong waves as well …

Analysis And Simulation In Neuron And Fibrosis Models, Humberto D. Perez Gonzalez Jan 2009

Analysis And Simulation In Neuron And Fibrosis Models, Humberto D. Perez Gonzalez

Mathematics Dissertations

In this work, we use analysis and numerical simulations to study the change of collective behaviorof two synaptically coupled square bursting systems, the effect of noise inan elliptic bursting system and foreign body reactions. For the square bursters we study its synchronization process as the strength ofcoupling increases. The two cells present chaotic bursting behaviorwhen there is no coupling. As the strength increases and past a certain value, the behavior of two cells, which are uncoupled, becomes synchronized regular burstingmotions. For the elliptic bursting phenomenon we study the distribution of the noise and its effects in the dynamics and the reliability of …
