Nuclear Resonances: The Quest For Large Column Densities And A New Tool, J. Greiner, S. Boggs, G. Dicocco, K. T. Freese, N. Gehrels, Dieter H. Hartmann, A. Iyudin, G. Kanbach, A. A. Zdziarski

Publications

Nuclear physics offers us a powerful tool: using nuclear resonance absorption lines to infer the physical conditions in astrophysical settings which are otherwise diffcult to deduce. Present-day technology provides an increase in sensitivity over previous gamma-ray missions large enough to utilize this tool for the first time. The most exciting promise is to measure gamma-ray bursts from the first star(s) at redshifts 20–60, but also active galactic nuclei are promising targets.

Investigation Of The Light Induced Redistribution Of Beta Nanoparticles In An Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer, Elsa Leite, Izabela Naydenova, Nitesh Pandey, Tzvetanka Babeva, G. Majano, Svetlana Mintova

Articles

We report the redistribution of colloidal zeolite Beta nanoparticles during holographic recording in acrylamide-based photopolymers. Using the techniques of confocal Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM–EDX), we have observed a periodic pattern, whose spacing agrees with the fringe spacing of the recorded holographic diffraction grating. It was estimated that the fraction of nanoparticles redistributed as a result of the holographic recording is 40%. The effect of the nanoparticles on the average refractive index of the nanocomposite layers was studied by UV–visible spectroscopy. It was observed that the addition of zeolite nanoparticles leads to …

Imaging Reconstruction For Light Scattering From A Tenuous Random Medium, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2009

Imaging Reconstruction For Light Scattering From A Tenuous Random Medium, Jonathan Blackledge

Conference papers

We consider the basis for describing strong scattering in terms of diffusive processes based on the diffusion equation. Intermediate strength scattering is then considered in terms of a fractional diffusion equation which is studied using results from fractional calculus. This approach is justified in terms of the generalization of a random walk model with no statistical bias in the phase to a random walk that has a phase bias and is thus, only `partially' or `fractionally' diffusive. A Green's function solution to the fractional diffusion equation is studied and a result derived that provides a model for an incoherent image …

Utilizing Available Residual Pressure In Fujairah Lines In Bypassing Al Ain Reception Station Considering Transients And Water Hammer Conditions, Hazem Bakri Al Naser

Theses

The objective of this study is to utilize the available residual pressure at Fujairah Transmission lines in order to save energy, operation and maintenance costs, and still deliver the required water to the end users of the distribution network. This has been achieved by bypassing the existing pumping stations (i.e. AARS Reservoir and pumping stations in addition to the local reservoirs and pumping stations of each area). The possibility of transients, surge, and cavitation occurrence was studied via a comprehensive transient simulation to make sure that the proposed bypassing will not have any impact on the upstream transmission system by …

Permutation Patterns, Reduced Decompositions With Few Repetitions And The Bruhat Order, Daniel Alan Daly Jan 2009

Permutation Patterns, Reduced Decompositions With Few Repetitions And The Bruhat Order, Daniel Alan Daly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is concerned with problems involving permutations. The main focus is on connections between permutation patterns and reduced decompositions with few repetitions. Connections between permutation patterns and reduced decompositions were first studied various mathematicians including Stanley, Billey and Tenner. In particular, they studied pattern avoidance conditions on reduced decompositions with no repeated elements. This thesis classifies the pattern avoidance and containment conditions on reduced decompositions with one and two elements repeated. This classification is then used to obtain new enumeration results for pattern classes related to the reduced decompositions and introduces the technique of counting pattern classes via reduced …

Naïve Bayes And Similarity Based Methods For Identifying Computer Users Using Keystroke Patterns, Shrijit S. Joshi

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we present two methods for identifying computer users using keystroke patterns. In the first method "Competition between naïve Bayes models for user identification," a naïve Bayes model is created for each user. In the training phase of this method, the model of a user is trained using maximum likelihood estimation on the key press latency values extracted from the texts typed by the user. In the user identification phase of this method, for each user we determine the probabilistic likelihood that the typed text belongs to a user. Finally, the typed text is assigned to the user …

Water Evaporation From Atmospheric Aerosols, Patrick Louden, Christopher Lawrence Jan 2009

Water Evaporation From Atmospheric Aerosols, Patrick Louden, Christopher Lawrence

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

With the recent discovery of the ubiquity of organic material in tropospheric aerosols, it has been postulated that the rates of water evaporation and condensation into the aerosols could be affected by thin surfactant films, which could ultimately affect cloud formation. Nathanson et al. have begun to study the effect of water evaporation from sulfuric acid solutions through the short-chain surfactant, butanol. They have found that a nearly full monolayer of butanol fails to reduce water evaporation from the acid. This unexpected result raises many questions about the mechanism of water evaporation. We used molecular modeling to help answer some …
