Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) represents a significant tool for the separation of microorganisms as well as the detection and isolation of Candida albicans (CA) fungus in human blood. There currently exists few rapid means by which biological pathogens can be tested, at low concentration, in blood, and other organic matrices. Other common chromatographic techniques, such as GC, HPLC, IR and MS do not have the capability of analyzing living microorganisms, nor the ability to separate them with any precision. Biomass-derived feedstock is of growing importance in the development of new synthetic pathways for commodity and specialty chemicals. Utilizing basic catalytic concepts such as hydrolysis, dehydration, isomerisation, and other common transformations of sugar in biomass conversion has already produced significant advances in the fundamental understanding of biomass conversion.

The fixing number of a graph G is the smallest cardinality of a set of vertices S such that only the trivial automorphism of G fixes every vertex in S. The fixing set of a group Γ is the set of all fixing numbers of finite graphs with automorphism group Γ. Several authors have studied the distinguishing number of a graph, the smallest number of labels needed to label G so that the automorphism group of the labeled graph is trivial. A rook polynomial counts the number of placements of non-attacking rooks on a board. In this paper we describe generalizations of the definition and properties of rook polynomials to "boards" in three and higher dimensions. We also defefine generalizations of special two dimensional boards to three dimensions, including the triangle board and the board representing the probleme des rencontres. The number of rook placements on these three dimensional families of rook boards are shown to be related to famous number sequences, such as central factorial numbers, the number of Latin rectangles and the Genocchi numbers.

The USS Arizona Preservation project is a multi-year, interdisciplinary and cumulative effort with each discipline contributing to basic research required to make informed management decisions for long-term preservation. Three significant issues include: (1) USS Arizona is a grave site for 900 or more Navy and Marine personal lost with the USS Arizona when Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941. (2) Minimizing environmental hazard from a potential fuel oil release of an estimated 500,000 gallons remaining in fuel bunkers or compartment overheads. The catalytic and structural properties of the H67A and H349A dapE-encoded N-succinyl-l,l-diaminopimelic acid desuccinylase (DapE) from Haemophilus influenzae were investigated. On the basis of sequence alignment with the carboxypeptidase from Pseudomonas sp. strain RS-16, both H67 and H349 were predicted to be Zn(II) ligands. The H67A DapE enzyme exhibited a decreased catalytic efficiency (180-fold) compared with wild-type (WT) DapE towards N-succinyldiaminopimelic acid. No catalytic activity was observed for H349A under the experimental conditions used. The electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electronic absorption data indicate that the Co(II) ion bound to H349A-DapE is analogous to that of WT …

In a two-dimensional magnetic nanowire, it is possible to engineer collisions between two domain walls put into motion by an externally applied field. We show that the topological defects that define the domain wall can be controlled to allow for both domain wall annihilation and preservation during the collisions as long as the wire remains thin. The preservation process can be used to release pinned domain walls from notches with small applied fields.

Beauty photoproduction in dijet events has been measured at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 126 pb-1. Beauty was identified in events with a muon in the final state by using the transverse momentum of the muon relative to the closest jet. Lifetime information from the silicon vertex detector was also used; the impact parameter of the muon with respect to the primary vertex was exploited to discriminate between signal and background. Cross sections for beauty production as a function of the muon and the jet variables as well as dijet correlations are compared to QCD …

The laser-induced modification of a fundamental process of quantum electrodynamics, the conversion of a high-energy gamma photon in the Coulomb field of a nucleus into an electron-positron pair, is studied theoretically. Although the employed formalism allows for the general case where the gamma photon and laser photons cross at an arbitrary angle, we here focus on a theoretically interesting and numerically challenging setup, where the laser beam and gamma photon counterpropagate and impinge on a nucleus at rest. The formation of surface relief profile in photopolymerisable systems when illuminated with a focused beam of light is simulated numerically using a two-way diffusion model that accounts both for monomer and short polymer chains diffusion. The concentration and spatial distribution dynamics of monomer, short and long polymer chains are calculated. It is assumed that the surface profile is a linear combination of monomer and polymer concentration with appropriate coefficients accounting for polymer shrinkage. A good agreement between the calculated and the experimentally measured profiles is observed thus demonstrating the successful application of the two way diffusion in modeling this system.

A simple electronic speckle pattern interferometer (ESPI) using a transmission holographic optical element (THOE) is presented. The THOE is designed to create a speckled reference beam in the interferometer. It is a transmission hologram of a diffusely transmitting glass plate A specific requirement for the fabrication of the THOEs is for them to be recorded at one wavelength at which the recording material is photosensitive and reconstructed using a near infrared laser diode which can be current modulated for phase shifting purposes. Ocular Microtremor (OMT) is a continual, high frequency physiological tremor of the eye present in all subjects even when the eye is apparently at rest. OMT causes a peak to peak displacement of around 150nm-2500nm with a broadband frequency spectrum between 30Hz to 120Hz; with a peak at about 83Hz. OMT carries useful clinical information on depth of consciousness and on some neurological disorders. Nearly all quantitative clinical investigations have been based on OMT measurements using an eye contacting piezoelectric probe which has low clinical acceptability. Traditional anti-corrosion technology has relied heavily on using reducible metal species, predominantly hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), for protecting reactive metal alloys such as aluminium which is extensively used in the aerospace sector. The colonisation of clinical and industrial surfaces with pathogenic microorganisms has prompted increased research into the development of effective antibacterial and antifouling coatings. There is evidence that implanted biomedical surfaces coated with metallic silver can be inactivated by hysiological fluids, thus reducing the bioactivity of the coating. In this work, we report the biofilm inhibition of Staphylococcus epidermidis using a roomtemperatureprocessedsilver dopedperfluoropolyether-urethane coating. The release of silver ions from these fluoropolymers over a six-day period inhibited bacterial encrustation – as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). 1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Tetrafluroborate (EMImBF4) and 1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazlium Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (EMImTFSI) ionic liquids were synthesized and characterized in order to study the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol in these ionic liquids on a platinum surface electrode.

It was found that pure EMImBF4 exhibits an electrochemical window of 4.4 V,while EMImTFSI exhibits an electrochemical window of 5.0 V.

Electrochemical study of ethanol in perchloric acid showed that the oxidation of ethanol strongly depends on the concentration of ethanol and on the temperature of the solution. The poisoning of the platinum electrode only depends on the concentration of ethanol. At a low concentration of …

Dilithium phthalocyanine (Li2Pc) consists of an aromatic macrocycle possessing a doubly negative charge and two Li+ counterions. One Li+ ion is easily displaceable while the other remains coordinated to the phthalocyanine ring. The displaceable Li+ cation can be exchanged with other cations, such as a singly charged tetra-alkyl ammonium cation, by using several variations of a general procedure. It has been demonstrated that tetraalkylammonium lithium phthalocyanines (TAA-LiPcs) can be successfully and reproducibly synthesized with yields ranging from 54.5% up to 64.3%. All TAA-LiPcs demonstrated poor solubilities from approximately <0.2 mg/mL to 5 mg/ml in the solvents tested (with the exception of tetrapropylammonium lithium phthalocyanine and tetrahexylammonium lithium phthalocyanine). All of the TAA-LiPcs synthesized were dark-purple in color, with the exception of tetraheptylammonium lithium phthalocyanine and tetraoctylammonium lithium phthalocyanine. These two compounds were dark - blue in color. Melting points varied greatly from >370.4°C to 157.9°C and depended greatly upon …

The synthesis of fully soluble branched poly(arylene ether)s via an oligomeric A2 + B3 system, in which the A2 oligomers are generated in situ, is presented. This approach takes advantage of the significantly higher reactivity toward nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions, NAS, of B2, 4-Fluorophenyl sulfone, relative to B3, tris(4-Fluorophenyl) phosphine oxide. The A2 oligomers were synthesized by reaction of Bisphenol-A and B2, in the presence of the B3 unit, at temperatures between 100 and 160 °C, followed by an increase in the reaction temperature to 180 °C at which point the branching unit was incorporated. Lithiation Reactions Of 3-(4-Chlorophenyl)Sydnone And 3-(4-Methylphenyl)Sydnone, Nigel Ngonidzashe Chitiyo

Ortho-iodophenyl sydnones are key intermediates in Sonogashira coupling reactions and the resulting ortho alkynyl sydnones are useful precursors to functionalized sydnonquinolines. In this work, three synthetic routes leading to the synthesis of these versatile intermediates were explored.

Lithiation reactions of 3-(4-chlorophenyl) sydnone and 3-(4-methylphenyl) sydnone followed by trapping with iodine electrophiles yielded the expected disubstituted species 3-(4-chloro-2-iodophenyl)-4-iodosydnone and 3-(4-methyl-2-iodophenyl)-4-iodosydnone in yields ranging from 14% to 75%. Subsequent reduction with sodium sulfite removed the iodine at the C-4 position in both species yielding the ortho iodophenyl sydnones in 80% and 85% yield, respectively.

Our goal in this paper is to determine whether a packaging machine of negligible width will fit through a hallway and into a certain room (see page 4 for comments about negligible width). Given the width of the hallway and the room, we apply calculus to find the minimum length available between the two. We determine that the machine will successfully fit into the room.

When a logic program is processed by an answer set solver, the first task is to generate its instantiation. In a recent paper, Calimeri et el. made the idea of efficient instantiation precise for the case of disjunctive programs with function symbols, and introduced the class of “finitely ground” programs that can be efficiently instantiated. Since that class is undecidable, it is important to find its large decidable subsets. In this paper, we introduce such a subset—the class of argumentrestricted programs. It includes, in particular, all finite domain programs, ω-restricted programs, and λ-restricted programs.

"Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) are a class of algorithms inspired by biological evolution. EAs are applicable to a wide range of problems; however, there are a number of parameters to set in order to use an EA. The performance of an EA is extremely sensitive to these parameter values; setting these parameters often requires expert knowledge of EAs.
