Contemporary Iron Stone Formation Due To Acid Sulfate Soil Processes, Leigh Sullivan, Richard Bush, Edward Burton
Contemporary Iron Stone Formation Due To Acid Sulfate Soil Processes, Leigh Sullivan, Richard Bush, Edward Burton
Associate Professor Edward D Burton
One of the defining factors affecting soil formation is parent material: it may therefore be expected that sulfidic parent materials leave acid sulfate soil ‘inprints' within the soil profiles developing on such parent materials. Indeed, acid sulfate soil processes have been thought to be responsible for relict soil features (e.g. Fanning, pers. comm.; Rabenhorst et al 2004). This presentation describes the occurrence of a contemporary iron stone layer (i.e. an indurated layer cemented by iron minerals) within the channel of the Talbragar River in central New South Wales, in Eastern Australia. A long term study has been conducted at this …
Gauge Theory Duals Of Black Hole - Black String Transitions Of Gravitational Theories On A Circle, Simon Catterall, Anosh Joseph, Toby Wiseman
Gauge Theory Duals Of Black Hole - Black String Transitions Of Gravitational Theories On A Circle, Simon Catterall, Anosh Joseph, Toby Wiseman
Physics - All Scholarship
We study the black hole - black string phase transitions of gravitational theories compactified on a circle using the holographic duality conjecture. The gauge theory duals of these theories are maximally supersymmetric and strongly coupled 1 + 1 dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills theories compactified on a circle, in the large N limit. We perform the strongly coupled finite temperature gauge theory calculations on a lattice, using the recently developed exact lattice supersymmetry methods based on topological twisting and orbifolding. The spatial Polyakov line serves as relevant order parameter of the confinement - deconfinement phase transitions in the gauge theory duals.

Thermal Phases Of D1-Branes On A Circle From Lattice Super Yang-Mills, Simon Catterall, Anosh Joseph, Toby Wiseman
Physics - All Scholarship
We report on the results of numerical simulations of 1+1 dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills theory with maximal supersymmetry at finite temperature and compactified on a circle. For large N this system is thought to provide a dual description of the decoupling limit of N coincident D1-branes on a circle. It has been proposed that at large N there is a phase transition at strong coupling related to the Gregory-Laflamme (GL) phase transition in the holographic gravity dual. In a high temperature limit there was argued to be a deconfinement transition associated to the spatial Polyakov loop, and it has been proposed …

The production of K_short mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The luminosity of the analysed sample is determined using a novel technique, involving measurements of the beam currents, sizes and positions, and is found to be 6.8 +/- 1.0 microbarn^-1. The differential prompt K_short production cross-section is measured as a function of the K_short transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < pT < 1.6 GeV/c and 2.5 < y < 4.0. The data are found to be in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and generator expectations.

We suggest a long-lived spin-polarization structure, a radial spin helix, and study its relaxation dynamics. For this purpose, starting with a system of equations for spin-polarization density, we find its general solution in the axially symmetric case. It is demonstrated that the radial spin helix of a certain period relaxes slower than homogeneous spin polarization and plain spin helix. Importantly, the spin polarization at the center of the radial spin helix stays almost unchanged at short times. At longer times, when the initial nonexponential relaxation region ends, the relaxation of the radial spin helix occurs with the same time constant …
Professional Implications Of Using Online Social Networking Systems By Persons Who Are Blind, Steven A. Kurutz
Professional Implications Of Using Online Social Networking Systems By Persons Who Are Blind, Steven A. Kurutz
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The online social networking (OSN) phenomenon has grown dramatically over the past decade, with websites such as Facebook and Twitter becoming household names. Although a lot of literature exists on online social networking systems, little exists on these systems' practical impact on the offline world, beyond cyberspace. Similarly, little attention has been given to the use of these systems by persons who are blind or have other disabilities. This research attempts to redress this situation by exploring the relationship between the usage of OSN systems and professional achievement for persons who are blind.

Floristic Investigation Of Crooked Creek Community Of Juan Solomon Park, Indianapolis Indiana, Raelene M. Crandall, Rebecca W. Dolan
Rebecca W. Dolan
The protection of plant resources in urban areas is a growing conservation concern. Inventory activities that document species presence and stewardship plans that protect and enhance these areas are needed. The results of a botanical inventory of the Crooked Creek Community Juan Solomon Park in Indianapolis, Indiana, are reported in this paper. The 46-acre park contains three distinct habitats, supporting a wide variety of plants. One hundred seventy-nine vascular plant species from 64 families were identified, including 53 (29.6%) non-native species that are naturalizing within the park. Despite its high percentage of alien species and urban setting, the park is …

We present observations of six transits and six eclipses of the transiting planet system HD 189733 taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) at 8 μm, as well as a re-analysis of previously published data. We use several novel techniques in our data analysis, the most important of which is a new correction for the detector "ramp" variation with a double-exponential function, which performs better and is a better physical model for this detector variation. Our main scientific findings are (1) an upper limit on the variability of the dayside planet flux of 2.7% (68% confidence); (2) …

Developing A Conceptual Model Of Virtual Organizations For Citizen Science, Andrea Wiggins, Kevin Crowston
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
This paper develops an organisation design-oriented conceptual model of scientific knowledge production through citizen science virtual organisations. Citizen science is a form of organisation design for collaborative scientific research involving scientists and volunteers, for which internet-based modes of participation enable massive virtual collaboration by thousands of members of the public. The conceptual model provides an example of a theory development process and discusses its application to an exploratory study. The paper contributes a multi-level process model for organising investigation into the impact of design on this form of scientific knowledge production.
Assessment Of Submerged Vegetation As Indicators Of Irgarol Contamination, Melissa V. Fernandez
Assessment Of Submerged Vegetation As Indicators Of Irgarol Contamination, Melissa V. Fernandez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Irgarol 1051 is a common antifoulant toxic to certain marine organisms. Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) are exposed to this herbicide when it leaches into the marine environment from painted structures, making SAVs ideal candidates to function as sentinel indicator of contamination. In the initial stage of this study, Coconut Grove and Key Largo Harbor were assessed for environmental exposure to Irgarol. Water, sediment and SAVs were collected, the latter two subject to automated solid phase extraction, and all samples analyzed by GC/MS-SIM for Irgarol and its metabolite, M1. Of the vegetation analyzed, Halodule and Syringodium had the highest capacity to …
Lorentz-Violating Gravitoelectromagnetism, Quentin G. Bailey
Lorentz-Violating Gravitoelectromagnetism, Quentin G. Bailey
Physics & Astronomy - Prescott
The well-known analogy between a special limit of general relativity and electromagnetism is explored in the context of the Lorentz-violating standard-model extension. An analogy is developed for the minimal standard-model extension that connects a limit of the CPT-even component of the electromagnetic sector to the gravitational sector. We show that components of the post-Newtonian metric can be directly obtained from solutions to the electromagnetic sector. The method is illustrated with specific examples including static and rotating sources. Some unconventional effects that arise for Lorentz-violating electrostatics and magnetostatics have an analog in Lorentz-violating post-Newtonian gravity. In particular, we show that even …

Correlations In Proton-Proton Collisions At The Lhc, The Cms Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Publications and Other Works
Results on two-particle angular correlations for charged particles emitted in proton proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 0.9, 2.36, and 7 TeV are presented, using data collected with the CMS detector over a broad range of pseudo-rapidity (h) and azimuthal angle (f). Short-range correlations in Dh, which are studied in minimum bias events, are characterized using a simple “independent cluster” parametrization in order to quantify their strength (cluster size) and their extent in h (cluster decay width). Long-range azimuthal correlations are studied differentially as a function of charged particle multiplicity and particle transverse momentum using a 980 nb^-1 data set …

The Roles Of Tidal Evolution And Evaporative Mass Loss In The Origin Of Corot-7 B, Brian Jackson, Neil Miller, Rory Barnes, Sean N. Raymond, Jonathan J. Fortney, Richard Greenberg
Brian Jackson
CoRoT-7 b is the first confirmed rocky exoplanet, but, with an orbital semimajor axis of 0.0172 au, its origins may be unlike any rocky planet in our Solar system. In this study, we consider the roles of tidal evolution and evaporative mass loss in CoRoT-7 b's history, which together have modified the planet's mass and orbit. If CoRoT-7 b has always been a rocky body, evaporation may have driven off almost half its original mass, but the mass loss may depend sensitively on the extent of tidal decay of its orbit. As tides caused CoRoT-7 b's orbit to decay, they …
Wavelet-Based Bayesian Estimation Of Partially Linear Regression Models With Long Memory Errors, Kyungduk Ko, Leming Qu, Marina Vannucci
Wavelet-Based Bayesian Estimation Of Partially Linear Regression Models With Long Memory Errors, Kyungduk Ko, Leming Qu, Marina Vannucci
Kyungduk Ko
In this paper we focus on partially linear regression models with long memory errors, and propose a wavelet-based Bayesian procedure that allows the simultaneous estimation of the model parameters and the nonparametric part of the model. Employing discrete wavelet transforms is crucial in order to simplify the dense variance-covariance matrix of the long memory error. We achieve a fully Bayesian inference by adopting a Metropolis algorithm within a Gibbs sampler. We evaluate the performances of the proposed method on simulated data. In addition, we present an application to Northern hemisphere temperature data, a benchmark in the long memory literature.

This paper discusses the synthesis of bio-, magneto-, and isotope stratigraphies in the shallow-water sediment sequences drilled on guyots in the western Pacific Ocean during Leg 144. Material previously dredged from the slopes of a few guyots and the Cretaceous section recovered at Site 869 are also considered. The integrated stratigraphy along with radiometric ages resulted in the reconstruction of the geological events that produced atolls and guyots.

We report a series of complex (dusty) plasma experiments, aimed at the study of the detailed time evolution of the recrystallization process followinga rapid quench of a two-dimensional dust liquid. The experiments were accompanied by large-scale (million-particle) molecular dynamicssimulations, assuming Yukawa-type interparticle interaction. Both experiment and simulation show a ∝t(α) (power-law) dependence of the linear crystallite domain size as measured by the bond-order correlation length, translational correlation length, dislocation (defect) density, and adirect size measurement algorithm. The results show two stages of order formation. On short time scales, individual particle motion dominates; this is afast process …

We report the detection of a giant planet in a 6.4950 day orbit around the 1.68 M☉ subgiant HD 102956. The planet has a semimajor axis a = 0.081 AU and a minimum mass MPsin i =0.96 MJup. HD 102956 is the most massive star known to harbor a hot Jupiter, and its planet is only the third known to orbit within 0.6 AU of a star more massive than 1.5 M☉. Based on our sample of 137 subgiants with M⋆>1.45 M☉, we find that 0.5%–2.3% of A-type stars harbor a close-in planet (a < 0.1 AU) with MPsin i > 1 MJup, consistent with hot-Jupiter …

We present precise Doppler measurements of four stars obtained during the past decade at Keck Observatory by the California Planet Survey (CPS). These stars, namely, HD 34445, HD 126614, HD 13931, and Gl 179, all show evidence for a single planet in Keplerian motion. We also present Doppler measurements from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) for two of the stars, HD 34445 and Gl 179, that confirm the Keck detections and significantly refine the orbital parameters. These planets add to the statistical properties of giant planets orbiting near or beyond the ice line, and merit follow-up by astrometry, imaging, and space-borne …

We report recent ground-based photometry of the transiting super-Earth exoplanet GJ 1214b at several wavelengths, including the infrared near 1.25 μm (J band). We observed a J-band transit with the FLAMINGOS infrared imager and the 2.1 m telescope on Kitt Peak, and we observed several optical transits using a 0.5 m telescope on Kitt Peak and the 0.36 m Universidad de Monterrey Observatory telescope. Our high-precision J-band observations exploit the brightness of the M dwarf host star at this infrared wavelength as compared with the optical and are significantly less affected by stellar activity and limb darkening. We fit the …
Application Of Convex Methods To Identification Of Fuzzy Subpopulations, Ryan Lee Eliason
Application Of Convex Methods To Identification Of Fuzzy Subpopulations, Ryan Lee Eliason
Theses and Dissertations
In large observational studies, data are often highly multivariate with many discrete and continuous variables measured on each observational unit. One often derives subpopulations to facilitate analysis. Traditional approaches suggest modeling such subpopulations with a compilation of interaction effects. However, when many interaction effects define each subpopulation, it becomes easier to model membership in a subpopulation rather than numerous interactions. In many cases, subjects are not complete members of a subpopulation but rather partial members of multiple subpopulations. Grade of Membership scores preserve the integrity of this partial membership. By generalizing an analytic chemistry concept related to chromatography-mass spectrometry, we …

This non-traditional imaging technique may be employed to improve space situational awareness and image deep space objects from a ground-based sensor system. The use of this technique is motivated by the ability to overcome aperture size limitations and the distortion effects from Earth’s atmosphere. Laser speckle imaging is a lensless, coherent method for forming two-dimensional images from their autocorrelation functions. Phase retrieval from autocorrelation data is an ill-posed problem where multiple solutions exist. This research introduces polarization diversity as a method for obtaining additional information so the …
