Climbing And Angles: A Study Of How Two Teachers Internalize And Implement The Intentions Of A Teaching Experiment, Anne Birgitte Fyhn
Climbing And Angles: A Study Of How Two Teachers Internalize And Implement The Intentions Of A Teaching Experiment, Anne Birgitte Fyhn
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In this innovative teaching experiment, the context of climbing is used to induce the teaching and learning of angle concepts. This article reports on the outcomes of a three day teaching and climbing experiment and the impact of this experience on the teacher’s understanding of meso and micro embodiments of mathematics, angle representations, as well as shifts in their attitudes about teaching/learning geometry.
Polysemy Of Symbols: Signs Of Ambiguity, Ami Mamolo
Polysemy Of Symbols: Signs Of Ambiguity, Ami Mamolo
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This article explores instances of symbol polysemy within mathematics as it manifests in different areas within the mathematics register. In particular, it illustrates how even basic symbols, such as ‘+’ and ‘1’, may carry with them meaning in ‘new’ contexts that is inconsistent with their use in ‘familiar’ contexts. This article illustrates that knowledge of mathematics includes learning a meaning of a symbol, learning more than one meaning, and learning how to choose the contextually supported meaning of that symbol.
A Semiotic Reflection On The Didactics Of The Chain Rule, Omar Hernandez Rodriguez, Jorge M. Lopez Fernandez
A Semiotic Reflection On The Didactics Of The Chain Rule, Omar Hernandez Rodriguez, Jorge M. Lopez Fernandez
The Mathematics Enthusiast
According to (Fried, 2008), there is an intrinsic tension in trying to apply the history of mathematics to its didactics. Besides the widespread feeling that the introduction of didactic elements taken from the history of mathematics can detract the pedagogy of mathematics from the attainment of important goals, (Fried, 2008, p. 193) describes a pair of specific pitfalls that can arise in implementing such historical applications in mathematics education. The description in (Fried, 2008), is presented in the parlance of Sausserian Semiotics and identifies two semiotic “deformations” that arise when one fails to observe that the pairing between signs and …

The table of contents of this double issue included the above quote from the historian Howard Zinn which might seem puzzling to the reader. Why was this quote included and what is it supposed to mean? In the opening editorial, I mused over the whole enterprise of scholarly publishing and what it amounts to in the grand scheme of things. Zinn’s quote reminds us that academia is a cloistered unit and many of the things we place importance on in the academic culture of publish or perish seem insignificant when viewed through the lens of real problems that occur outside …
The Influence Of A Multidisciplinary Scientific Research Experience On Teachers Views Of Nature Of Science, Jerine Pegg, Edith Gummer
The Influence Of A Multidisciplinary Scientific Research Experience On Teachers Views Of Nature Of Science, Jerine Pegg, Edith Gummer
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This study examined a professional development project for K-12 science teachers that engaged participants in an authentic scientific investigation along with explicit-reflective attention to nature of science (NOS). The Views of Nature of Science (VNOS) and Views of Scientific Inquiry (VOSI) Questionnaires (Lederman, Abd-El-Khalick, Bell, & Schwartz, 2002; Schwartz, Lederman, & Thompson, 2001) were used to examine the relationship between teachers’ views of NOS and specific aspects of the professional development project. Results of the study show that teachers’ views of NOS were influenced by the multidisciplinary, primarily non-experimental research that they engaged in, the opportunity to observe interactions of …

A Graduate Level In-Service Teacher Education Curriculum Integrating Engineering Into Science And Mathematics Contents, Ke Wu Norman, Tamara J. Moore, Anne L. Kern
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This paper presents the curriculum of a master’s level in-service teacher education course that integrates engineering into mathematics and science for high school mathematics and science teachers. The curricular design of the course including learning goals, reading list, course assignment and grading rubric, and a sample of Model-Eliciting Activities (MEAs) are discussed. In addition preliminary research results on teachers’ perception of engineering show that prior to taking this course, teachers’ understanding of engineering mainly focused on the professions of the engineering discipline. After the participation in the course, teachers’ perceptions of engineering were broadened and included the design process of …
The Generation Of Domestic Electricity Load Profiles Through Markov Chain Modelling, Aidan Duffy, Fintan Mcloughlin, Michael Conlon
The Generation Of Domestic Electricity Load Profiles Through Markov Chain Modelling, Aidan Duffy, Fintan Mcloughlin, Michael Conlon
Conference Papers
Micro-generation technologies such as photovoltaics and micro-wind power are becoming increasing popular among homeowners, mainly a result of policy support mechanisms helping to improve cost competiveness as compared to traditional fossil fuel generation. National government strategies to reduce electricity demand generated from fossil fuels and to meet European Union 20/20 targets is driving this change. However, the real performance of these technologies in a domestic setting is not often known as high time resolution models for domestic electricity load profiles are not readily available. As a result, projections in terms of reducing electricity demand and financial paybacks for these micro-generation …

Novel Π-Conjugated Materials Plus Their Characterizations And Applications, Xiuxian He
All Dissertations
The theme of this dissertation will focus on the syntheses and characterization of bipyridine (bipy) containing π-conjugated polymers (CPs). Specifically, poly(p-phenylene ethynylene), polyfluorene and poly(p-phenylene vinylene) derivatives have been prepared via Sonogashira coupling, Suzuki coupling and Heck coupling, respectively. Derivatives of poly(p-phenylene ethynylene), polyfluorene and poly(p-phenylene vinylene) are known to have applications in optical and electronic devices. Through this study, polymers condensed with bulky bipy-containing TAB as one of the copolymer units have shown increased solubility and diminished intrachain/interchain aggregation in solution and in film due to the effectiveness of TAB in controlling the relative orientations of individual polymer chains. …

A First Practical Algorithm For High Levels Of Relational Consistency, Shant Karakashian, Robert J. Woodward, Christopher Reesons, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Christian Bessiere
CSE Conference and Workshop Papers
Consistency properties and algorithms for achieving them are at the heart of the success of Constraint Programming. In this paper, we study the relational consistency property R(∗,m)C, which is equivalent to m-wise consistency proposed in relational databases. We also define wR(∗,m)C, a weaker variant of this property. We propose an algorithm for enforcing these properties on a Constraint Satisfaction Problem by tightening the existing relations and without introducing new ones. We empirically show that wR(∗,m)C solves in a backtrack-free manner all the instances of some CSP benchmark classes, thus hinting at the tractability of those classes.

Two-photon double ionization of He is studied at the Free Electron Laser in Hamburg (FLASH) by inspecting He2+ momentum (P-(He 2+)) distributions at 52 eV photon energy. We demonstrate that recoil ion momentum distributions can be used to infer information about highly correlated electron dynamics and find the first experimental evidence for 'virtual sequential ionization'. The experimental data are compared with the results of two calculations, both solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. We find good overall agreement between experiment and theory, with significant differences for cuts along the polarization direction that cannot be explained by the experimental resolution …
Anderson Localization As Position-Dependent Diffusion In Disordered Waveguides, Ben Payne, Alexey Yamilov, Sergey E. Skipetrov
Anderson Localization As Position-Dependent Diffusion In Disordered Waveguides, Ben Payne, Alexey Yamilov, Sergey E. Skipetrov
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We show that the recently developed self-consistent theory of Anderson localization with a position-dependent diffusion coefficient is in quantitative agreement with the supersymmetry approach up to terms of the order of 1/g 02 (with g0 the dimensionless conductance in the absence of interference effects) and with large-scale ab initio simulations of the classical wave transport in disordered waveguides, at least for g 0 ~ 0.5. In the latter case, agreement is found even in the presence of absorption. Our numerical results confirm that in open disordered media, the onset of Anderson localization can be viewed as position-dependent diffusion.
Biological And Physical Analysis Of Currents And Water Masses Off The Coast Of Southeast Florida, Stephanie Healey
Biological And Physical Analysis Of Currents And Water Masses Off The Coast Of Southeast Florida, Stephanie Healey
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Biological and physical sampling of a 10km long, east-west transect was performed during 2007, off the coast of southeast Florida. Temperature and salinity measurements were recorded using a conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sensor, and current direction and magnitude measurements were recorded using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). Zooplankton samples were collected, during the daytime, using a Tucker multiple net mid-water trawl, with 760μm mesh, at intended depths of ~25m and ~200m, at three stations along the transect. Laboratory analysis indicated that several currents and water masses influenced the density distribution of calanoid copepods and chaetognaths. During April and September 2007, a …
River Sediment Sampling Methods- Causeway Building And Removal, Dillon Dittmer
River Sediment Sampling Methods- Causeway Building And Removal, Dillon Dittmer
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Abstract The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) suspect that causeways have a negative impact on river ecology both when installed and when removed. The Nebraska Department of Roads routinely uses causeways as a tool in the construction and repair of bridges. Although research has not been conducted on the impact of causeway building and removal data has been collected about the impact of dams, causeways, etc. on estuaries. This data is considered subjective and authors often cite sampling methods as a source of error. Currently there are no widely used handheld sampling methods that …

The Toll Of Toxics: Investigating Environmental Contaminants, Donald Sparling, Barnett A. Rattner, John S. Barclay
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Two recent events [the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the Asarco settlement] bring to the fore the work of wildlife toxicologists. Focusing on amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, wildlife toxicology is a component of ecotoxicology--the study of toxic effects caused by natural or synthetic pollutants on living organisms and other constituents of ecosystems (Truhaut 1977). Now a distinct discipline within the wildlife profession-practiced by members of The Wildlife Society's own Wildlife Toxicology Working Group, among others-wildlife toxicology has become increasingly important as human populations and industry have spread, causing contaminants to multiply.
Emerging Environmental Contaminants (EECs) include an array of …

The dust destruction timescales in the cores of clusters of galaxies are relatively short given their high central gas densities. However, substantial mid-infrared and sub-mm emission has been detected in many brightest cluster galaxies. In this letter we present Herschel PACS and SPIRE photometry of the brightest cluster galaxy in three strong cooling flow clusters, A1068, A2597 and Zw3146. This photometry indicates that a substantial mass of cold dust is present (> 3×107 M⊙) at temperatures significantly lower (20–28 K) than previously thought based on limited MIR and/or sub-mm results. The mass and temperature of the dust appear …

The question of how much gas cools in the cores of clusters of galaxies has been the focus of many, multiwavelength studies in the past 30 years. In this letter we present the first detections of the strongest atomic cooling lines, [Cii], [Oi] and [Nii] in two strong cooling flow clusters, A1068 and A2597, using Herschel-PACS. These spectra indicate that the substantial mass of cold molecular gas (> 109 M⊙) known to be present in these systems is being irradiated by intense UV radiation, most probably from young stars. The line widths of these FIR lines …

Herschel PACS and SPIRE images have been obtained of NGC 6720 (the Ring nebula). This is an evolved planetary nebula with a central star that is currently on the cooling track, due to which the outer parts of the nebula are recombining. From the PACS and SPIRE images we conclude that there is a striking resemblance between the dust distribution and the H2 emission, which appears to be observational evidence that H2 forms on grain surfaces. We have developed a photoionization model of the nebula with the Cloudy code which we used to determine the physical conditions of …

Among the ferroelectric thin films considered for use in nonvolatile memory devices, the ferroelectric copolymer of polyvinylidene fluoride, PVDF (C2H2F2), with trifluoroethylene, TrFE (C2HF3), has distinct advantages, including low dielectric constant, low processing temperature, relative low cost compared with epitaxial ferroelectric oxides, and compatibility with organic semiconductors. We report the operation and polarization retention properties of a metal– ferroelectric–insulator–semiconductor bistable capacitor memory element consisting of an aluminum gate, a P(VDF-TrFE) Langmuir–Blodgett film, a 30 nm cerium oxide buffer layer, and a moderately doped silicon wafer. Restructuring Introductory Physics By Adapting An Active Learning Studio Model, Delena Bell Gatch
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Despite efforts to engage students in the traditional lecture environment, faculty in Georgia Southern University’s Physics Department became dissatisfied with lecture as the primary means of instruction. During the fall semester of 2006, our department began adapting the studio model to suit the needs of introductory calculus-based physics students at our institution. A studio course seamlessly integrates the lecture and laboratory courses into a single course, devoting much of the class time to active, collaborative, student-centered learning. An emphasis was placed on replacing traditional lectures with interactive, technology enriched class periods designed around the various learning styles. New teaching materials …

Integrated Fisheries Management: Draft Allocation Report – West Coast Demersal Scalefish, Integrated Fisheries Allocation Advisory Committee
Fisheries management papers
The Minister for Fisheries established the Integrated Fisheries Management Allocation Advisory Committee (IFAAC), under Section 42 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA), in 2004 to investigate IFM resource allocation issues and make recommendations to him on optimal resource use.
The IFAAC has prepared this report, which documents the committee’s initial position on allocations for the west coast demersal scalefish resource, along with the reasons for its conclusions as a basis for widespread community consultation. This report follows the IFAAC’s preliminary investigation of the west coast demersal scalefish resource sharing issues and consultation with stakeholders.

New Constructions For Identity-Based Unidirectional Proxy Re-Encryption, Junzuo Lai, Wen Tao Zhu, Robert H. Deng, Shengli Liu, Weidong Kou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We address the cryptographic topic of proxy re-encryption (PRE), which is a special public-key cryptosystem. A PRE scheme allows a special entity, known as the proxy, to transform a message encrypted with the public key of a delegator (say Alice), into a new ciphertext that is protected under the public key of a delegatee (say Bob), and thus the same message can then be recovered with Bob’s private key. In this paper, in the identity-based setting, we first investigate the relationship between so called mediated encryption and unidirectional PRE. We provide a general framework which converts any secure identity-based unidirectional …

Effects Of Hydrogen Bonding On Vibrational Normal Modes Of Pyrimidine, Austin A. Howard, Gregory S. Tschumper, Nathan I. Hammer
Effects Of Hydrogen Bonding On Vibrational Normal Modes Of Pyrimidine, Austin A. Howard, Gregory S. Tschumper, Nathan I. Hammer
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The effects of weak intermolecular interactions on 10 vibrational normal modes of pyrimidine are investigated by Raman spectroscopy and electronic structure computations. Hydrogen-bonded networks of water induce a shift to higher energy in certain normal modes of pyrimidine with increasing water concentration, while other modes are relatively unaffected. Pyrimidine molecules also exhibit weak C-H⋯N interactions and shifted normal modes upon crystallization. The selective nature of the shifting of normal modes to higher energy allows for definitive assignments of the nearly degenerate ν8a and ν8b modes with polarized Raman spectroscopy. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses indicate that when water molecules donate …

Water Quality Monitoring And Constituent Load Estimation In The Upper White River Basin, 2009, L.B. Massey, B.E. Haggard, R.S. Avery, R.A. Morgan
Technical Reports
The Arkansas Water Resources Center monitored water quality at seven sites in the Upper White River Basin during base flow conditions and storm events from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. Water samples were collected manually with an alpha or Kemmerer style sampler and analyzed for nitrate‐nitrogen (NO₃‐N), sulfate (SO₄), chloride (Cl‐), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total phosphorus (TP), dissolved ammonia (NH₃‐N), total N (TN), total suspended solids (TSS), and turbidity. Physico‐chemical parameters were measured in field including pH, conductivity, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen concentration. The selected sites were all at established discharge monitoring stations maintained by the …
