Trypanosoma cruzi is a protozoan parasite that causes Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis, which is the leading cause of death in Latin America. The primary objective of this study is to create an ontology-driven information infrastructure to support parasite researchers in identifying gene knockout, vaccination, or drug targets for T. cruzi. This involves querying across multiple datasets from diverse sources, such as proteome, pathway, internal lab data, etc. that are often represented in heterogeneous formats. To address this, a multi-ontology parasite knowledge repository (PKR) is being created with an intuitive graphical query interface called Cuebee. The PKR is underpinned by …

Trust is an amorphous concept that is becoming Increasingly important in many domains, such as P2P networks, E-commerce, social networks, and sensor networks. While we all have an intuitive notion of trust, the literature is scattered with a wide assortment of differing definitions and descriptions; often these descriptions are highly dependent on a single domain or application of interest. In addition, they often discuss orthogonal aspects of trust while continuing to use the general term “trust”. In order to make sense of the situation, we have developed an ontology of trust that integrates and relates its various aspects into a …

Sit-To-Stand Detection Using Fuzzy Clustering Techniques, Tanvi Banerjee, James M. Keller, Marjorie Skubic, Carmen Abbott

Kno.e.sis Publications

The ability to rise from a chair is an important parameter to assess the balance deficits of a person. In particular, this can be an indication of risk for falling in elderly persons. Our goal is automated assessment of fall risk using video data. Towards this goal, we present a simple yet effective method of detecting transition, i.e. sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit, from image frames using fuzzy clustering methods on image moments. The technique described in this paper is shown to be robust even in the presence of noise and has been tested on several data sequences using different subjects yielding …

Correlation-Based Traffic Analysis Attacks On Anonymity Networks, Ye Zhu, Xinwen Fu, Byran Gramham, Riccardo Bettati, Wei Zhao Jul 2010

Correlation-Based Traffic Analysis Attacks On Anonymity Networks, Ye Zhu, Xinwen Fu, Byran Gramham, Riccardo Bettati, Wei Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we address attacks that exploit the timing behavior of TCP and other protocols and applications in low-latency anonymity networks. Mixes have been used in many anonymous communication systems and are supposed to provide countermeasures to defeat traffic analysis attacks. In this paper, we focus on a particular class of traffic analysis attacks, flow-correlation attacks, by which an adversary attempts to analyze the network traffic and correlate the traffic of a flow over an input link with that over an output link. Two classes of correlation methods are considered, namely time-domain methods and frequency-domain methods. Based on our …

Shrinking Symbolic Regression Over Medical And Physiological Signals, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh Jul 2010

Shrinking Symbolic Regression Over Medical And Physiological Signals, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Medical embedded systems of the present and future are recording vast sets of data related to medical conditions and physiology. Linear modeling techniques are proposed as a means to help explain relationships between two or more medical or physiological signal measurements from the same human subject. In this paper a statistical regression algorithm is explored for use in medical monitoring, telehealth, and medical research applications.

An essential element in applying linear modeling to physiological data is determining functional forms for the predictor signals. In this paper we demonstrate an efficient method for symbolic regression and model selection among possible transformation …

A Life Cycle Cost Analysis Of Large-Scale Thermal Energy Storage Technologies For Buildings Using Combined Heat And Power, Kenneth Gaine, Aidan Duffy Jul 2010

A Life Cycle Cost Analysis Of Large-Scale Thermal Energy Storage Technologies For Buildings Using Combined Heat And Power, Kenneth Gaine, Aidan Duffy

Conference Papers

Buildings account for approximately 40% of energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in developed economies, of which approximately 55% of building energy is used for heating and cooling. The reduction of building-related GHG emissions is a high international policy priority. For this reason and because there are many technical solutions for this, these polices should involve significant improvements in the uptake of small-scale energy efficient (EE) systems. However the widespread deployment of many technologies, must overcome a number of barriers, one of which is a temporal (diurnal or seasonal) mismatch between supply and demand. Costeffective thermal storage solutions have …

Nonlinear Observers For Human-In-The-Loop Control Systems, Samuel Kitchen Mckinley Jul 2010

Nonlinear Observers For Human-In-The-Loop Control Systems, Samuel Kitchen Mckinley

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The development of models for a human-in-the-loop with hardware is an area of ongoing research. The ability to simulate a human-in-the-loop with hardware provides a platform for better understanding the dynamics of human and machine cognition. A human-in-the-loop model provides information that can be used to design more efficient human interfaces and smarter autonomous assistant controllers. This can make a complex task such as flying an aircraft safer and more accessible. This thesis explores different possibilities for human operator models to be modeled in the loop with a vehicle. A human is modeled as a linear state feedback controller in …

Deep-Pelagic (0-3000 M) Fish Assemblage Structure Over The Mid-Atlantic Ridge Relative To The North Atlantic Subpolar Front, April B. Cook, Tracey Sutton, John K. Galbraith, M. Vecchione

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Only a tiny fraction of the world's largest volume of living space, the ocean's mid-water region, has ever been sampled. It is one of the least understood areas on earth, so as part of the International Census of Marine Life field project, MAR-ECO, a discrete-depth trawling survey was conducted in 2009 aboard the NOAA ship Henry Bigelow to examine pelagic assemblage structure and distribution over the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone (CGFZ) of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The survey consisted of 11 stations divided into two transects, one northwest and one southeast of the CGFZ, which roughly coincides with the Subpolar Front. …

Theoretical Properties And Estimation In Weighted Weibull And Related Distributions, Ryan Roman Jul 2010

Theoretical Properties And Estimation In Weighted Weibull And Related Distributions, Ryan Roman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Weibull distribution is a well known and common distribution. In this thesis, theoretical properties of weighted Weibull distributions are presented. Properties of the non-weighted Weibull distribution are also reiterated for comparison. The probability density functions, cumulative distribution functions, survival functions, hazard functions and reverse hazard functions are given for each distribution. In addition, Glaser's Lemma is applied to determine the behavior of the hazard functions. The standardized moments, differential entropy, Fisher information and results based on the likelihood function are given for each distribution as well. These results are also shown for the Rayleigh distribution, a special case of …

A Displaced Supermassive Black Hole In M87, Daniel P. Batcheldor, A. Robinson, D. J. Axon, Eric S. Perlman, D. Merritt

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Isophotal analysis of M87, using data from the Advanced Camera for Surveys, reveals a projected displacement of 6.8 ± 0.8 pc (~0farcs1) between the nuclear point source (presumed to be the location of the supermassive black hole, SMBH) and the photo-center of the galaxy. The displacement is along a position angle of 307° ± 17° and is consistent with the jet axis. This suggests the active SMBH in M87 does not currently reside at the galaxy center of mass, but is displaced in the counter-jet direction. Possible explanations for the displacement include orbital motion of an SMBH binary, gravitational perturbations …

A Bycatch Action Plan For The Pilbara Fish Trawl Interim Managed Fishery., Department Of Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries management papers

The effect of commercial fishing on bycatch species and the marine ecosystem generally, has emerged as a significant national and international issue. Environmental issues associated with bycatch – including impacts on the ecology of non-target species of fish and wildlife – are important issues to address in reducing the impacts, or potential impacts, of commercial fisheries.

In 1998, the National Standing Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture developed a national policy on fisheries bycatch. In 1999, the (then) State Minister for Fisheries adopted the national policy as his position on bycatch for Western Australia. The main objective of the policy is …

Enforcing Information Flow Security Properties In Cyber-Physical Systems: A Generalized Framework Based On Compensation, Thoshitha T. Gamage, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Thomas P. Roth Jul 2010

Enforcing Information Flow Security Properties In Cyber-Physical Systems: A Generalized Framework Based On Compensation, Thoshitha T. Gamage, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Thomas P. Roth

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a general theory of event compensation as an information flow security enforcement mechanism for Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). The fundamental research problem being investigated is that externally observable events in modern CPSs have the propensity to divulge sensitive settings to adversaries, resulting in a confidentiality violation. This is a less studied yet emerging concern in modern system security. A viable method to mitigate such violations is to use information flow security based enforcement mechanisms since access control based security models cannot impose restrictions on information propagation. Further, the disjoint nature of security analysis is not appropriate for systems …

Electronic Library Database Application, Visar Nura Jul 2010

Electronic Library Database Application, Visar Nura

Theses and Dissertations

It's probably fair to say that most business-oriented computer applications work with data in one form or another. This data often is stored in one or more databases. Visual Basic can create powerful data management programs with a little planning and effort. The most fundamental part of that planning is in how the data is structured. A poorly designed database can doom even the most well-intentioned program from the start. On the other hand, a well-designed database can make a programmer's life much easier. Creating an organized data structure requires you to learn about two separate tasks. First, you must …

The cloud imaging and particle size (CIPS) experiment is one of three instruments on board the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) spacecraft that was launched into a 600 km Sun‐synchronous orbit on 25 April 2007. CIPS images have shown distinct wave patterns and structures in polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs), around the summertime mesopause region, which are qualitatively similar to structures seen in noctilucent clouds (NLCs) from ground‐based photographs. The structures in PMC are generally considered to be manifestations of upward propagating atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs). Variability of AGW effects on PMC reported at several lidar sites has led …

Magic Circles In The Arbelos, Christer Bergsten Jul 2010

Magic Circles In The Arbelos, Christer Bergsten

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In the arbelos three simple circles are constructed on which the tangency points for three circle chains, all with Archimedes’ circle as a common starting point, are situated. In relation to this setting, some algebraic formulae and remarks are presented. The development of the ideas and the relations that were “discovered” were strongly mediated by the use of dynamic geometry software.

Cultural Conflicts In Mathematics Classrooms And Resolution: The Case Of Immigrants From The Former Soviet Union And Israeli "Old Timers", Miriam Amit Jul 2010

Cultural Conflicts In Mathematics Classrooms And Resolution: The Case Of Immigrants From The Former Soviet Union And Israeli "Old Timers", Miriam Amit

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper describes a singular process that has been transforming mathematics education in Israel over the past 20 years, as a result of a massive influx of mathematics teachers from the former Soviet Union (FSU). It traces the key points of conflict that marked the initial contact between Israel's mathematical and educational culture and the codes and values brought with the immigrant teachers from the FSU. It then shows how this conflict is gradually becoming resolved, as the two disparate cultures merge into a single, new culture, based on 'the best of both worlds.' This case, we claim, can serve …

Pre-Service Teachers In Mathematics Lesson Study, Elizabeth A. Burroughs, Jennifer L. Luebeck Jul 2010

Pre-Service Teachers In Mathematics Lesson Study, Elizabeth A. Burroughs, Jennifer L. Luebeck

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper presents qualitative evidence to answer the questions, “What are the outcomes of engaging pre-service and in-service teachers in a collaborative lesson study experience” and “How can the outcomes of this experience inform future ways to include preservice teachers in lesson study?” The data gathered demonstrate that including pre-service teachers in lesson study can introduce them to lesson-building as a process and cross-grades teacher collaboration. It can give them opportunities to be critical thinkers in the context of mathematics education and encourages them to think as teachers. One weakness the pre-service teachers demonstrated was an incomplete understanding of the …

Internal And External Comments On Course Evaluations And Their Relationship To Course Grades, Hilary Smith Risser Jul 2010

Internal And External Comments On Course Evaluations And Their Relationship To Course Grades, Hilary Smith Risser

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The validity of student evaluations of courses and the relationship between evaluations and course outcomes has frequently been examined. Since many course evaluations give students an opportunity to provide answers to open-ended questions in addition to giving Likert scale ratings, it is important to understand the relationship between these responses and course outcomes. This study examined the relationship between student responses to open ended questions (specifically whether they attributed their achievement to factors within their control or factors not within their control) and their outcomes in the course. The results of the study indicate that students that identified external factors …

Problem Posing From The Foundations Of Mathematics, Libby Knott Jul 2010

Problem Posing From The Foundations Of Mathematics, Libby Knott

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This reflective paper develops a repertoire of questions for teachers to use in their classrooms during episodes of mathematics discussions with and among students. These questions are motivated by an examination of questions posed by Wittgenstein in Zettel, and are connected to underlying tacit assumptions about mathematics, most of which lie subtly below the generally accepted milieu of math-talk. Once classrooms norms have been established to encourage participation by all students in a democratic and just classroom environment, these questions can be used effectively to stimulate meaningful discourse. These questions provide important examples of problem posing designed to encourage student …

Coherent Bag-Of Audio Words Model For Efficient Large-Scale Video Copy Detection, Yang Liu, Wan-Lei Zhao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Chang-Sheng Xu, Han-Qing Lu Jul 2010

Coherent Bag-Of Audio Words Model For Efficient Large-Scale Video Copy Detection, Yang Liu, Wan-Lei Zhao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Chang-Sheng Xu, Han-Qing Lu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Current content-based video copy detection approaches mostly concentrate on the visual cues and neglect the audio information. In this paper, we attempt to tackle the video copy detection task resorting to audio information, which is equivalently important as well as visual information in multimedia processing. Firstly, inspired by bag-of visual words model, a bag-of audio words (BoA) representation is proposed to characterize each audio frame. Different from naive singlebased modeling audio retrieval approaches, BoA is a highlevel model due to its perceptual and semantical property. Within the BoA model, a coherency vocabulary indexing structure is adopted to achieve more efficient …
