Analytics-Modulated Coding Of Surveillance Video, Lai-Tee Cheok, Nikhil Gagvani
Analytics-Modulated Coding Of Surveillance Video, Lai-Tee Cheok, Nikhil Gagvani
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Video surveillance systems increasingly use H.264 coding to achieve 24x7 recording and streaming. However, with the proliferation of security cameras, and the need to store several months of video, bandwidth and storage costs can be significant. We propose a new compression technique to significantly improve the coding efficiency of H.264 for surveillance video. Video content is analyzed and video semantics are extracted using video analytics algorithms such as segmentation, classification and tracking. In contrast to existing approaches, our Analytics-Modulated Compression (AMC) scheme does not require coding of object shape information and produces bitstreams that are standards-compliant and not limited to …

Effective Music Tagging Through Advanced Statistical Modeling, Jialie Shen, Meng Wang, Shuicheng Yan, Hwee Hwa Pang, Xian-Sheng Hua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Music information retrieval (MIR) holds great promise as a technology for managing large music archives. One of the key components of MIR that has been actively researched into is music tagging. While significant progress has been achieved, most of the existing systems still adopt a simple classification approach, and apply machine learning classifiers directly on low level acoustic features. Consequently, they suffer the shortcomings of (1) poor accuracy, (2) lack of comprehensive evaluation results and the associated analysis based on large scale datasets, and (3) incomplete content representation, arising from the lack of multimodal and temporal information integration. In this …

Generating Templates Of Entity Summaries With An Entity-Aspect Model And Pattern Mining, Peng Li, Jing Jiang, Yinglin Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose a novel approach to automatic generation of summary templates from given collections of summary articles. This kind of summary templates can be useful in various applications. We first develop an entity-aspect LDA model to simultaneously cluster both sentences and words into aspects. We then apply frequent subtree pattern mining on the dependency parse trees of the clustered and labeled sentences to discover sentence patterns that well represent the aspects. Key features of our method include automatic grouping of semantically related sentence patterns and automatic identification of template slots that need to be filled in. We …

Background: Promotion of the HIV epidemic by aflatoxin is postulated but not yet established. Sub-Saharan populations commonly consume food contaminated by mycotoxins, particularly aflatoxins (predominantly found in peanut, maize, rice, and cassava) and fumonisins, which occur primarily in maize. Aflatoxin promotes hepatocellular cancer, and fumonisin may promote esophageal cancer.
Objectives: This analysis was undertaken to test the hypotheses that consumption of mycotoxin-prone staple foods is 1) related to the incidence of HIV infection in Africa and 2) related to “signature” cancer rates confirming exposure to aflatoxins and fumonisins.
Design: World Health Organization data for causes of death and the Food …

Medical embedded systems are capable of recording vast data sets for physiological and medical research. Linear modeling techniques are proposed as a means to explore relationships between two or more medical or physiological signal measurements where a causal relationship is believed to be present. Multiple regression is explored for use in medical monitoring, telehealth, and clinical applications.
Spectral regression methods for high-bandwidth medical and physiological signals are demonstrated. The twostage method consists of performing an FFT over a timelagged window of the predictor signal, and constructing a model based on the FFT coefficients. The output of the regression is used …

In an effort to simultaneously study the gas and dust components of the disc surrounding the young Herbig Ae star HD 169142, we present far-IR observations obtained with the PACS instrument onboard the Herschel Space Observatory. This work is part of the open time key program GASPS, which is aimed at studying the evolution of protoplanetary discs. To constrain the gas properties in the outer disc, we observed the star at several key gas-lines, including [OI] 63.2 and 145.5 mum, [CII] 157.7 mum, CO 72.8 and 90.2 mum, and o-H2O 78.7 and 179.5 mum. We only detect the [OI] 63.2 …
Scaled Vapor-To-Liquid Nucleation In A Lennard-Jones System, Barbara N. Hale, Mark Thomason
Scaled Vapor-To-Liquid Nucleation In A Lennard-Jones System, Barbara N. Hale, Mark Thomason
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Scaling of the homogenous vapor-to-liquid nucleation rate, J, is observed in a model Lennard-Jones (LJ) system. The model uses Monte Carlo simulation-generated small cluster growth to decay rate constant ratios and the kinetic steady-state nucleation rate formalism to determine J at four temperatures below the LJ critical temperature, Tc. When plotted vs the scaled supersaturation, lnS/[Tc/T-1]3/2, the values of log J are found to collapse onto a single line. A similar scaling has been observed for the experimental nucleation rate data of water and toluene.

Fivefold Differential Cross Sections For Ground-State Ionization Of Aligned H₂ By Electron Impact, Arne Senftleben, Ola A. Al-Hagan, Thomas Pfluger, Xueguang Ren, Don H. Madison, Alexander Dorn, Joachim Hermann Ullrich
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We discuss the ionization of aligned hydrogen molecules into their ionic ground state by 200 eV electrons. Using a reaction microscope, the complete electron scattering kinematics is imaged over a large solid angle. Simultaneously, the molecular alignment is derived from postcollision dissociation of the residual ion. It is found that the ionization cross section is maximized for small angles between the internuclear axis and the momentum transfer. Fivefold differential cross sections (5DCSs) reveal subtle differences in the scattering process for the distinct alignments. We compare our observations with theoretical 5DCSs obtained with an adapted molecular three-body distorted wave model that …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Neotropic Cormorant) has been observed with increasing frequency in the alluvial plain (Delta region) of Mississippi. In the past 6 years, 22 individuals have been observed in 20 separate sightings during spring and summer. These sightings have occurred at breeding colonies of other colonial waterbirds and commercial aquaculture facilities of Ictalurus punctatus (Channel Catfish). Two sexually mature Neotropic Cormorants have been collected at a colonial waterbird breeding colony near the Mississippi River in the western Delta region among flocks of Phalacrocorax auritus (Double-crested Cormorants). Twice during the summer of 2008, confirmed nesting of Neotropic Cormorants were documented in …

The images remain indelible: On a chilly January day in 2009, a U.S. Airways Airbus A320 departed from New York’s LaGuardia Airport. About five miles out, flying at 2,000 feet, it collided with a flock of Canada geese (Branta canadensis), severely damaging the plane’s engines. Within minutes of the collision the pilot safely conducted an emergency landing on the Hudson River. All 155 passengers survived.

Star Unfolding Convex Polyhedra Via Quasigeodesic Loops, Jin-Ichi Itoh, Joseph O'Rourke, Costin Vîlcu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We extend the notion of star unfolding to be based on a quasigeodesic loop Q rather than on a point. This gives a new general method to unfold the surface of any convex polyhedron ℘ to a simple (nonoverlapping) planar polygon: cut along one shortest path from each vertex of ℘ toQ, and cut all but one segment of Q.

We present a self-organizing neural model for creating intelligent learning agents in virtual worlds. As agents in a virtual world roam, interact and socialize with users and other agents as in real world without explicit goals and teachers, learning in virtual world presents many challenges not found in typical machine learning benchmarks. In this paper, we highlight the unique issues and challenges of building learning agents in virtual world using reinforcement learning. Specifically, a self-organizing neural model, named TD-FALCON (Temporal Difference - Fusion Architecture for Learning and Cognition), is deployed, which enables an autonomous agent to adapt and function in …

Robust Fuzzy Cpu Utilization Control For Dynamic Workloads, Can Basaran, Mehmet H. Suzer, Kyoung-Don Kang, Xue Liu
Computer Science Faculty Scholarship
In a number of real-time applications such as target tracking, precise workloads are unknown a priori but may dynamically vary, for example, based on the changing number of targets to track. It is important to manage the CPU utilization, via feedback control, to avoid severe overload or underutilization even in the presence of dynamic workloads. However, it is challenge to model a real-time system for feedback control, as computer systems cannot be modeled via physics laws. In this paper, we present a novel closed-loop approach for utilization control based on formal fuzzy logic control theory, which is very effective to …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Geodatabase development for coastal studies conducted by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is essential to support the exploitation of hyperspectral imagery (HSI). NRL has found that the remote sensing and mapping science community benefits from coastal classifications that group coastal types based on similar features. Selected features in project geodatabases relate to significant biological and physical forces that shape the coast. The project geodatabases help researchers understand factors that are necessary for imagery post processing, especially those features having a high degree of temporal and spatial variability. NRL project geodatabases include a hierarchy of environmental factors that extend from shallow …

We present observations and analysis of the broad-band afterglow of Swift GRB 071025. Using optical and infrared (RIYJHK) photometry, we derive a photometric redshift of 4.4 < 5.2; at this redshift our simultaneous multicolour observations begin at ∼30 s after the gamma-ray burst trigger in the host frame, during the initial rising phase of the afterglow. We associate the light-curve peak at ∼580 s in the observer frame with the formation of the forward shock, giving an estimate of the initial Lorentz factor 0 ∼ 200. The red spectral energy distribution (even in regions not affected by the Lyman α break) provides secure evidence of a large dust column. However, the inferred extinction curve shows a prominent flat component between 2000 and 3000 Å in the rest frame, inconsistent with any locally observed template but well fitted by models of dust formed by supernovae. Time-dependent fits to the extinction profile reveal no evidence of dust destruction and limit the decrease in the extinction column to A3000 < 0.54 mag after t = 50 s in the rest frame. Together with studies of high-z quasars, our observations suggest a transition in dust properties in the early Universe, possibly associated with a transition between supernova-dominated and asymptotic giant branch-dominated modes of dust production.

Protoplanetary accretion disks are disks of dust and gas which surround and feed material onto a forming star in the earliest stages of its evolution. One of the most useful methods for studying these disks is near infrared spectroscopy of rovibrational CO emission. This paper presents the methods in which synthetically generated spectra are modeled and fit to spectral data gathered from protoplanetary disks. This paper also discussed the methods in which this code can be improved by modifying the code to run a Monte Carlo analysis of best fit across the CONDOR cluster at Clemson University, thereby allowing for …

CO emission is a useful probe of the warm gas distribution in the planet forming regions of disks around Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars. We model UV fluoresced and thermally excited CO in the circumstellar disks of several HAeBes. We find indications of dust settling in the upper atmospheres of HD 141569 and HD 97048 and a correlation between PAH luminosity and gas heating in these two systems.

Planets are formed in disks around young stars. With an age of ~10 Myr, TW Hya is one of the nearest T Tauri stars that is still surrounded by a relatively massive disk. In addition a large number of molecules has been found in the TW Hya disk, making TW Hya the perfect test case in a large survey of disks with Herschel–PACS to directly study their gaseous component. We aim to constrain the gas and dust mass of the circumstellar disk around TW Hya. We observed the fine-structure lines of [O i] and [C ii] as part of the …

For the first time, differential inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering using the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms. The measurements were made for boson virtualities Q2>125 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1 and the jets were identified in the Breit frame. The performance and suitability of the jet algorithms for their use in hadron-like reactions were investigated by comparing the measurements to those performed with the kT algorithm. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections …

Many organophosphorus (OP) based compounds are highly toxic and powerful inhibitors of cholinesterases that generate serious environmental and human health concerns. Organothiophosphates with a thiophosphoryl (P=S) functional group constitute a broad class of these widely used pesticides. They are related to the more reactive phosphoryl (P=O) organophosphates, which include very lethal nerve agents and chemical warfare agents, such as, VX, Soman and Sarin. Unfortunately, widespread and frequent commercial use of OP-based compounds in agricultural lands has resulted in their presence as residues in crops, livestock, and poultry products and also led to their migration into aquifers. Thus, the design of …

The purpose of this manual is to provide a seagrass researcher with information concerning TBISP protocols and results.

High Performance Computing (HPC) resources are housed in large datacenters, which consume huge amounts of energy and are quickly demanding attention from businesses as they result in high operating costs. On the other hand HPC environments have been very useful to researchers in many emerging areas in life sciences such as Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics. In this paper, we provide a dynamic model for energy aware scheduling (EAS) in a HPC environment; we use a widely used bioinformatics tool named BLAT (BLAST-like alignment tool) running in a HPC environment as our case study. Our proposed EAS model incorporates 2-Phases: an …
