The Hamiltonian index of a graph GG is defined as h(G)=min{m:Lm(G) is Hamiltonian}.h(G)=min{m:Lm(G) is Hamiltonian}. In this paper, using the reduction method of Catlin [P.A. Catlin, A reduction method to find spanning Eulerian subgraphs, J. Graph Theory 12 (1988) 29–44], we constructed a graph sourceH̃^(m)(G) from GG and prove that if h(G)≥2h(G)≥2, then h(G) = min{m : H̃^(m)(G) has a spanning Eulerian subgraph}.

A graph is claw-free if it has no induced K 1,3, subgraph. A graph is essential 4-edge-connected if removing at most three edges, the resulting graph has at most one component having edges. In this note, we show that every essential 4-edge-connected claw free graph has a spanning Eulerian subgraph with maximum degree at most 4.

A graph G is collapsible if for every even subset X ⊆ V ( G ) , G has a subgraph such that G − E ( Γ ) is connected and the set of odd-degree vertices of Γ is X . Hyperthermophilic archaea are of great interest in evolutionary microbiology, owing to their ability to withstand high temperatures, and often extremes of pressure, pH and salinity. Enzymes from these organisms1 may offer particular opportunities for asymmetric synthesis, complementary to approaches with mesophilic enzymes,2 or those involving enzyme3 and pathway4 reengineering. However, perhaps due to a bias that hyperthermophilic enzymes have “narrow substrate specificities,”5 archaeal extremophiles remain a largely untapped resource in asymmetric synthesis.6

Cheng and Wu (2001) introduced a method for response surface exploration using only one design by using a 3-level design to first screen a large number of factors and then project onto the significant factors to perform response surface exploration. Previous work generally involved selecting designs based on projection properties first and aliasing structure second. However, having good projection properties is of little concern if the correct factors cannot be identified. We apply Jones and Nachtsheim’s (2009) method for finding optimal designs with minimal aliasing to find 18, 27, and 30-run designs to use for single-step screening and optimization. Our …

We present results from an all-sky search for unmodeled gravitational-wave bursts in the data collected by the LIGO, GEO 600 and Virgo detectors between November 2006 and October 2007. The search is performed by three different analysis algorithms over the frequency band 50-6000 Hz. Data are analyzed for times with at least two of the four LIGO-Virgo detectors in coincident operation, with a total live time of 266 days. No events produced by the search algorithms survive the selection cuts. We set a frequentist upper limit on the rate of gravitational-wave bursts impinging on our network of detectors. The coastal areas of Bangladesh have a high cyclone frequency. The protection from cyclone damage afforded by the natural mangrove forests of the Sundarbans, led the Forest Department in 1966 to initiate a mangrove afforestation programme. These initial plantings proved highly successful in protecting and stabilizing coastal areas, and led to a large-scale mangrove afforestation initiative. To date, approximately 120 000 ha of mangroves have been planted. Nursery and planting techniques have been developed for the major species, while additional species are still being investigated. The marine zonation of l'logan Island was studied as part of the McCoy Society expedition early in 1968. The composition of the supra-littoral zone is similar to that in Tasmania and Wilson's Promontory while the composition of the littoral zone and the sublittoral fringe has greater resemblance to South Australian coasts. Recent advances in the collection of Lagrangian data from the ocean and results about the well-posedness of the primitive equations have led to a renewed interest in solving flow equations in Lagrangian coordinates. We do not take the view that solving in Lagrangian coordinates equates to solving on a moving grid that can become twisted or distorted. Rather, the grid in Lagrangian coordinates represents the initial position of particles, and it does not change with time. Variational data assimilation for Lagrangian geophysical fluid dynamics is introduced. Lagrangian coordinates add numerical difficulties into an already difficult subject, but also offer certain distinct advantages over Eulerian coordinates. First, float position and depth are defined by linear measurement functionals. Second, Lagrangian or ‘comoving’ open domains are conveniently expressed in Lagrangian coordinates. The attraction of such open domains is that they lead to well-posed prediction problems [Bennett and Chua (1999)] and hence efficient inversion algorithms. Eulerian and Lagrangian solutions of the inviscid forward problem in a doubly periodic domain, with North Atlantic mesoscales, are compared and found to be in …

Chebyshev pseudospectral spatial discretization preconditioned by the Kosloff and Tal-Ezer transformation [10] is applied to hyperbolic and parabolic functional equations. A Jacobi waveform relaxation method is then applied to the resulting semi-discrete functional systems, and the result is a simple system of ordinary differential equations d/dtUk+1(t) = MαUk+1(t)+f(t,U kt). Here Mα is a diagonal matrix, k is the index of waveform relaxation iterations, U kt is a functional argument computed from the previous iterate and the function f, like the matrix Mα, depends on the process of semi-discretization. We implement an approach for the accurate assimilation of Lagrangian data into regional general ocean circulation models. The forward model is expressed in Lagrangian coordinates and simulated float data are incorporated into the model via four dimensional variational data assimilation. We show that forward solutions computed in Lagrangian coordinates are reliable for time periods of up to 100 days with phase speeds of 1 m/s and deformation radius of 35 km. Sensitivity analysis is critically needed to better understand the microwave emission model for soil moisture retrieval using passive microwave remote sensing data. The vegetation b-factor along with vegetation water content and surface characteristics has significant impact in model prediction. This study evaluates the sensitivity of the b-factor, which is function of vegetation type. The analysis is carried out using Passive and Active L and S-band airborne sensor (PALS) and measured field soil moisture from Southern Great Plains experiment (SGP99). The path of steepest ascent can used to optimize a response in an experiment, but problems can occur with multiple responses. Past approaches to this issue such as Del Castillo’s overlap of confidence cones and Mee and Xiao’s Pareto Optimality, have not considered the correlations of the responses or parameter uncertainty. We propose a new method using the Bayesian reliability to calculate this direction. Locomotory muscles typically operate over a narrow range of contraction frequencies, characterized by the predominant fiber types and functional roles. The highest documented frequencies in the synchronous sound-producing muscles of insects (550 Hz) and toadfish (200 Hz) far exceed the contraction frequencies observed in weight-bearing locomotory muscles, which have maximum documented frequencies below 15-30 Hz. Laws of scaling, however, predict that smaller arthropods may employ stride frequencies exceeding this range. In this study we measured running speed and stride frequency in two undescribed species of teneriffiid mites from the coastal sage scrub of southern California. Relative speeds of both species …

Targeted maximum likelihood estimation of a parameter of a data generating distribution, known to be an element of a semiparametric model, involves constructing a parametric model through an initial density estimator with parameter epsilon representing an amount of fluctuation of the initial density estimator, where the score of this fluctuation model at epsilon=0 equals the efficient influence curve/canonical gradient. The latter constraint can be satisfied by many parametric fluctuation models, since it represents only a local constraint of its behavior at zero fluctuation. Super learning is a general loss based learning method that has been proposed and analyzed theoretically in van der Laan et al. (2007). In this article we consider super learning for prediction. The super learner is a prediction method designed to find the optimal combination of a collection of prediction algorithms. The super learner algorithm finds the combination of algorithms minimizing the cross-validated risk. We present high-resolution, near-infrared NIRSPEC observations of the fundamental rovibrational CO and H+ 3 R(1,0), R(1,1) u , and Q(1,0) transitions toward three early-type young stars: MWC 1080, MWC 349, and LkHα 101. These observations were performed for the purpose of constraining the physical characteristics of the interstellar material along each line of sight. Toward MWC 1080, we detected strong CO absorption and determined a column density upper limit of 1.4 × 1014 cm–2 for H+ 3. We infer that there is very little diffuse material along the line of sight toward MWC 1080 and that the CO absorption is …

The Information Technology (IT) governance of a large wastewater treatment plant was examined with respect to the COBIT framework. The COBIT Quickstart prescription was used as the basis for a phase I current state assessment throughout this examination. Assessment tests were administered to the CIO revealing a strong need for IT governance within this domain. Following, interviews were conducted with individuals in an effort to illustrate the current state of IT governance and identify gaps. We show that when one looks beyond the Drude model of metal conductivity, the metals that may be extremely lossy for low frequency electromagnetic waves can become perfectly lossless in the mid-IR region or higher, while retaining the essential metallic characteristic of negative permittivity even at those frequencies. We identify that the transition to the lossless regime occurs when the interatomic distances in the lattice exceed certain values, typically a factor of two larger than those occurring in nature. We believe that advances in nanoassembly may render lossless metals feasible with revolutionary implications for the fields of plasmonics and metamaterials.
