The Life Of Evariste Galois And His Theory Of Field Extension, Felicia N. Adams
The Life Of Evariste Galois And His Theory Of Field Extension, Felicia N. Adams
Senior Honors Theses
Evariste Galois made many important mathematical discoveries in his short lifetime, yet perhaps the most important are his studies in the realm of field extensions. Through his discoveries in field extensions, Galois determined the solvability of polynomials. Namely, given a polynomial P with coefficients is in the field F and such that the equation P(x) = 0 has no solution, one can extend F into a field L with α in L, such that P(α) = 0. Whereas Galois Theory has numerous practical applications, this thesis will conclude with the examination and proof of the fact that it is impossible …
Identifying Controls On Surface Carbon Dioxide Efflux In A Semi-Arid Ecosystem, Katrina Elsie Ladd
Identifying Controls On Surface Carbon Dioxide Efflux In A Semi-Arid Ecosystem, Katrina Elsie Ladd
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This study focused on soil respiration, the least constrained process in the terrestrial carbon cycle, and a source of uncertainty for model predicted ecosystem response to climate change. Respiration processes that make up soil respiration respond to environmental influencing factors, temperature, and moisture. Respiration responses vary by site, time of year, and also year to year, confounding determination of individual influence of the factors, making soil respiration difficult to model. This research took advantage of the climate characteristics of a semi-arid system, in order to observe soil temperature and moisture influence on soil respiration. Field measurements of soil surface CO …
Extending The Page Segmentation Algorithms Of The Ocropus Documentation Layout Analysis System, Amy Alison Winder
Extending The Page Segmentation Algorithms Of The Ocropus Documentation Layout Analysis System, Amy Alison Winder
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
With the advent of more powerful personal computers, inexpensive memory, and digital cameras, curators around the world are working towards preserving historical documents on computers. Since many of the organizations for which they work have limited funds, there is world-wide interest in a low-cost solution to obtaining these digital records in a computer-readable form. An open source layout analysis system called OCRopus is being developed for such a purpose. In its original state, though, it could not process documents that contained information other than text. Segmenting the page into regions of text and non-text areas is the first step of …

Computational Circle Packing: Geometry And Discrete Analytic Function Theory, Gerald Lee Orick
Computational Circle Packing: Geometry And Discrete Analytic Function Theory, Gerald Lee Orick
Doctoral Dissertations
Geometric Circle Packings are of interest not only for their aesthetic appeal but also their relation to discrete analytic function theory. This thesis presents new computational methods which enable additional practical applications for circle packing geometry along with providing a new discrete analytic interpretation of the classical Schwarzian derivative and traditional univalence criterion of classical analytic function theory. To this end I present a new method of computing the maximal packing and solving the circle packing layout problem for a simplicial 2-complex along with additional geometric variants and applications. This thesis also presents a geometric discrete Schwarzian quantity whose value …

An exploratory study of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and SCCmec elements in bacteria along the Mexican border of south Texas was performed. Between September and December of 2008, 375 swabs of anterior nares were self-collected by students attending the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) and cultured for MRSA. Fifty seven bacterial isolates were kept for further analysis that included suspected MRSA and other SCCmec-containing bacteria. Isolates were examined for the presence of nuc, mecA, lukS-PV, and spa genes using PCR. SCCmec and spa typing were also performed. Seven S. aureus isolates were found …
Hidra: Hierarchical Inter-Domain Routing Architecture, Bryan Clevenger
Hidra: Hierarchical Inter-Domain Routing Architecture, Bryan Clevenger
Master's Theses
As the Internet continues to expand, the global default-free zone (DFZ) forwarding table has begun to grow faster than hardware can economically keep pace with. Various policies are in place to mitigate this growth rate, but current projections indicate policy alone is inadequate. As such, a number of technical solutions have been proposed. This work builds on many of these proposed solutions, and furthers the debate surrounding the resolution to this problem. It discusses several design decisions necessary to any proposed solution, and based on these tradeoffs it proposes a Hierarchical Inter-Domain Routing Architecture - HIDRA, a comprehensive architecture with …
Analysis Of Fresh Water Resources At The Line Hole Well Field, San Salvador Island, The Bahamas, Scot Allan Russell Jr.
Analysis Of Fresh Water Resources At The Line Hole Well Field, San Salvador Island, The Bahamas, Scot Allan Russell Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A major economic constraint in the Bahamas, and other small carbonates islands world-wide, is the lack of fresh water resources. To combat these socio-economic problems on San Salvador Island I sought to gain a more detailed understanding of the extent, behavior, and controls on the island’s fresh-water lens. DC electrical resistivity tomography and time-series geochemical data are used to study the fresh water lens at the Line Hole well field. Electrical Resistivity profiles are used to image the extent of fresh water resources. Time-series geochemical data provide information on the behavior of the fresh water resources as a function of …
An Algorithm To Generate Two-Dimensional Drawings Of Conway Algebraic Knots, Jen-Fu Tung
An Algorithm To Generate Two-Dimensional Drawings Of Conway Algebraic Knots, Jen-Fu Tung
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The problem of finding an efficient algorithm to create a two-dimensional embedding of a knot diagram is not an easy one. Typically, knots with a large number of crossings will not nicely generate two-dimensional drawings. This thesis presents an efficient algorithm to generate a knot and to create a nice two-dimensional embedding of the knot. For the purpose of this thesis a drawing is “nice” if the number of tangles in the diagram consisting of half-twists is minimal. More specifically, the algorithm generates prime, alternating Conway algebraic knots in O(n) time where n is the number of crossings …
Degradation Of Chlorophenols In Swine Waste, Srilatha Gangula
Degradation Of Chlorophenols In Swine Waste, Srilatha Gangula
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Naturally occurring plant derived phenols can be degraded through bacteria in swine waste. Chlorinated phenols, which are not naturally present in the environment, are toxic and generated from industrial activities as such petrochemical, pharmaceutical, plastic, rubber, pesticide, iron, steel, paper production, coal conversion, wood preserving, and cellulose bleaching. Large scale coal gasification and carbonization plants are another source of chlorinated phenols. Although not normally present in the environment, chlorinated phenols are structurally similar to many plant derived phenolics.
It is our hypothesis that bacteria located in swine wastes may also have the ability to degrade chlorinated phenols. Identifying situations (and …

On The Irreducibility Of The Cauchy-Mirimanoff Polynomials, Brian C. Irick
On The Irreducibility Of The Cauchy-Mirimanoff Polynomials, Brian C. Irick
Doctoral Dissertations
The Cauchy-Mirimanoff Polynomials are a class of polynomials that naturally arise in various classical studies of Fermat's Last Theorem. Originally conjectured to be irreducible over 100 years ago, the irreducibility of the Cauchy-Mirimanoff polynomials is still an open conjecture.
This dissertation takes a new approach to the study of the Cauchy-Mirimanoff Polynomials. The reciprocal transform of a self-reciprocal polynomial is defined, and the reciprocal transforms of the Cauchy-Mirimanoff Polynomials are found and studied. Particular attention is given to the Cauchy-Mirimanoff Polynomials with index three times a power of a prime, and it is shown that the Cauchy-Mirimanoff Polynomials of index …
Schubert Numbers, Masato Kobayashi
Schubert Numbers, Masato Kobayashi
Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis discusses intersections of the Schubert varieties in the flag variety associated to a vector space of dimension n. The Schubert number is the number of irreducible components of an intersection of Schubert varieties. Our main result gives the lower bound on the maximum of Schubert numbers. This lower bound varies quadratically with n. The known lower bound varied only linearly with n. We also establish a few technical results of independent interest in the combinatorics of strong Bruhat orders.

Saluki: A High-Performance Wi-Fi Sniffing Program, Keren Tan, David Kotz
Saluki: A High-Performance Wi-Fi Sniffing Program, Keren Tan, David Kotz
Dartmouth Scholarship
Building a campus-wide wireless LAN measurement system faces many efficiency, scalability and security challenges. To address these challenges, we developed a distributed Wi-Fi sniffing program called Saluki. Compared to our previous implementation and to other available sniffing programs, Saluki has the following advantages: (1) its small footprint makes it suitable for a resource-constrained Linux platform, such as those in commercial Wi-Fi access points; (2) the frame-capture rate increased more than three-fold over tcpdump with minimal frame loss; (3) all traffic between this sniffer and the back-end server was secured using 128-bit encryption; and (4) the traffic load on the backbone …

Virtual Organization Clusters: Self-Provisioned Clouds On The Grid, Michael Murphy
Virtual Organization Clusters: Self-Provisioned Clouds On The Grid, Michael Murphy
All Dissertations
Virtual Organization Clusters (VOCs) provide a novel architecture for overlaying dedicated cluster systems on existing grid infrastructures. VOCs provide customized, homogeneous execution environments on a per-Virtual Organization basis, without the cost of physical cluster construction or the overhead of per-job containers. Administrative access and overlay network capabilities are granted to Virtual Organizations (VOs) that choose to implement VOC technology, while the system remains completely transparent to end users and non-participating VOs. Unlike alternative systems that require explicit leases, VOCs are autonomically self-provisioned according to configurable usage policies. As a grid computing architecture, VOCs are designed to be technology agnostic and …
Time To Get Real: A Food Assessment Of Dining At Pomona College, Samantha Meyer
Time To Get Real: A Food Assessment Of Dining At Pomona College, Samantha Meyer
Pomona Senior Theses
Pomona College is an institution deeply committed to sustainability and student well being; however these commitments are not reflected in the College’s food purchases. Before this study, an assessment of purchasing had not been conducted at Pomona College. Using the Real Food Calculator – a metric designed to evaluate food purchasing at academic institutions – I tracked all food purchased by one of the College’s dining halls over the course of one month. Each food item was assessed based on the potential health concerns of its ingredients and whether the item was locally produced, ecologically sound and/or humane to determine …
Oak Savanna Restoration And Management In The Mid-South, Seth A. Barrioz
Oak Savanna Restoration And Management In The Mid-South, Seth A. Barrioz
Masters Theses
Oak savannas are among the most imperiled ecosystems in the United States as a result of habitat degradation and consequently, associated vegetation and wildlife communities have also declined. I evaluated savanna restoration strategies on twelve case studies in Tennessee and Kentucky. These case studies represented a broad range of disturbances and the most advanced savanna restoration sites within the region. I evaluated vegetation and breeding bird responses to landscape and overstory conditions across sites through a meta-analysis. Total grass and forb cover were influenced by overstory metrics but not by topography (P >0.05). Oak regeneration density was influenced by canopy …
An Empirical Model Of Thermal Updrafts Using Data Obtained From A Manned Glider, Christopher E. Childress
An Empirical Model Of Thermal Updrafts Using Data Obtained From A Manned Glider, Christopher E. Childress
Masters Theses
Various methods have been used, including airborne radars, LIDAR, observation of flying birds, towers, tethered balloons, and aircraft to gain both a qualitative and quantitative representation of how heat and moisture are transported to higher altitudes and grow the boundary or mixing layer by thermal updrafts. This paper builds upon that research using an instrumented glider to determine the structure and build a mathematical model of thermals in a desert environment. During these flights, it was discovered that the traditional view of a thermal as a singular rising plume of air did not sufficiently explain what was being observed, but …
Three Dimensional Localization With Time-Gated Photon Counting And Maximum Likelihood Analysis, James Andrew Germann
Three Dimensional Localization With Time-Gated Photon Counting And Maximum Likelihood Analysis, James Andrew Germann
Masters Theses
The localization of particles is an important step for the study of nanoscale objects and systems. Research is ongoing on techniques to find the position of particles moving about freely or interacting with other objects, especially below the diffraction limit of optical microscopy. The method of particle localization under development here arranges four laser beam foci created from a femtosecond pulsed Ti-Sapphire laser into a tetrahedron. The microscope constructed for this thesis includes optics to split each Ti-Sapphire laser pulse into four temporally and spatially separated pulses at the focus of the objective. Maximum likelihood analysis of the time-gated fluorescence …
Enterprise Users And Web Search Behavior, April Ann Lewis
Enterprise Users And Web Search Behavior, April Ann Lewis
Masters Theses
This thesis describes analysis of user web query behavior associated with Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Enterprise Search System (Hereafter, ORNL Intranet). The ORNL Intranet provides users a means to search all kinds of data stores for relevant business and research information using a single query. The Global Intranet Trends for 2010 Report suggests the biggest current obstacle for corporate intranets is “findability and Siloed content”. Intranets differ from internets in the way they create, control, and share content which can make it often difficult and sometimes impossible for users to find information. Stenmark (2006) first noted studies of corporate …
Comparative Ecophysiology Of American Chestnut Under Different Planting Treatments On Reclaimed Mine Sites, Christopher Ryan Miller
Comparative Ecophysiology Of American Chestnut Under Different Planting Treatments On Reclaimed Mine Sites, Christopher Ryan Miller
Masters Theses
American chestnut was once an abundant species that dominated the Eastern U.S. deciduous forests. Although this species is currently functionally extinct due to the chestnut blight, researchers are working on blight-resistant hybrids in hopes of restoring the species. As one potential vector for chestnut reintroduction and dispersal, the reclamation of mine sites are being considered. Recent research has found that reforestation efforts on these reclaimed mine sites provide productive tree growth while also complying with mine-reclamation laws. Understanding how American chestnut performs physiologically on mine sites will aid in the restoration of this species and reclamation of mine sites.

The Origins Of Mathematical Societies And Journals, Eric S. Savage
The Origins Of Mathematical Societies And Journals, Eric S. Savage
Masters Theses
We investigate the origins of mathematical societies and journals. We argue that the origins of today’s professional societies and journals have their roots in the informal gatherings of mathematicians in 17th century Italy, France, and England. The small gatherings in these nations began as academies and after gaining government recognition and support, they became the ancestors of the professional societies that exist today. We provide a brief background on the influences of the Renaissance and Reformation before discussing the formation of mathematical academies in each country.
Feasibility Of Extending An Artificial Salmon Spawning Stream, Marx Creek Near Hyder, Alaska, Tom Nelson
Feasibility Of Extending An Artificial Salmon Spawning Stream, Marx Creek Near Hyder, Alaska, Tom Nelson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Marx Creek, near Hyder in southeast Alaska, is a groundwater-fed, artificial salmon-spawning stream that was constructed to enhance the habitat of the atypically large chum salmon. The success of the upper Marx Creek has been limited primarily by the infiltration of silty water from the Salmon River through its flood-control dike, which results in a turbid stream environment that is not conducive to salmon spawning.
The purpose of this project was to determine whether baseflow from the groundwater system is sufficient to support a proposed 1,000-foot extension of Marx Creek. The extension would be constructed approximately 500 feet east of …
Investigating Characteristics Of Lightning-Induced Transient Luminous Events Over South America, Matthew A. Bailey
Investigating Characteristics Of Lightning-Induced Transient Luminous Events Over South America, Matthew A. Bailey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Sprites, halos, and elves are members of a family of short-lived, luminous phenomena known as Transient Luminous Events (TLEs), which occur in the middle atmosphere. Sprites are vertical glows occurring at altitudes typically ranging from ~40 to 90 km. In video imagery they exhibit a red color at their top, with blue tendril-like structure at low altitudes. Elves are disk-like glows that occur at the base of the ionosphere, with diameters of ~100-300 km, and have very short lifetimes (~2-3 ms). Halos are diffuse glows that occur at low altitudes, have diameters <100 km, and have a duration that may last up to 10s of ms.
A majority of the studies of TLEs have …
100>Applying Information Visualization To Computer Security Applications, Robert Bruce Whitaker
Applying Information Visualization To Computer Security Applications, Robert Bruce Whitaker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis presents two phases of research in applying visualization to network security challenges. The first phase included discovering the most useful and powerful features in existing computer security visualizations and incorporating them into the AdviseAid visualization platform, an existing software package. The incorporation of such a complete feature set required novel resolution of software engineering, human factors, and computer graphics issues. We also designed additional novel features, such as plugin interfaces, allowing for rapid prototyping and experimentation with novel visualization features and capabilities. The second phase of the research focused on the development of novel visualization techniques themselves. These …
Maternal Effects In Transmission Of Self-Medicative Behavior From Mother To Offspring In Sheep, Udita Sanga
Maternal Effects In Transmission Of Self-Medicative Behavior From Mother To Offspring In Sheep, Udita Sanga
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Mammals begin learning food preferences in utero and maternally mediated influences early in life help offspring develop their feeding habits. Mammals also learn by individual experience to ingest medicinal compounds such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), which attenuates the negative post-ingestive effects of tannins, a group of potentially toxic plant secondary compounds. The objective of this study was to investigate the transmission of acquired self-medicative behavior from mother to offspring using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a medicine to relieve malaise caused by tannins. I hypothesized that: 1) mothers trained to associate the beneficial effects of PEG while consuming tannins will pass …
