Nutrients present in digested animal waste can be utilized for algae cultivation under suitable conditions. Algal growth, however, depends on the chemical forms and speciation of these nutrients. In this study a chemical equilibrium model was first used to describe nutrient speciation and predict conditions that enhance the solubility of nutrients in anaerobic digester effluent. Dilution with water and separation of large particulates greatly improved nutrient availability and light penetration - conditions favorable for algal cultivation. Various anticancer and antibacterial agents have been synthesized via azide chemistry by taking advantage of carbohydrate. Starting from the synthesis of 14 glycosyl azides, a library of carbohydrate-oxazolidinone conjugates and a library of carbohydrate-cyclopamine conjugates with biological interests were synthesized based on a highly efficient "click reaction" assisted by sonication. Some of the conjugates have improved solubility and enhanced anticancer activity.

A library of neomycin B derivatives with various modifications at the 5" position has been synthesized. Two leads exhibit prominent activity against both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). This dissertation attempts to provide a comprehensive examination on the non-market valuation of the effect of open space amenities and local public infrastructure on the value of urban land and housing with both spatial heterogeneity and project heterogeneity. The marriage of two very powerful techniques – cryogenic matrix isolation spectroscopy and seeded supersonic molecular beams – has led to the development of a novel type of cryogenic matrix isolation spectroscopy in ultracold, near 0 K, He droplets. The technique known as helium nanodroplet isolation (HENDI) has seen tremendeous experimental interest over the past 20 years; this in turn has resulted in the availability of spectroscopic data for many molecules and clusters embedded in He clusters. The symposium served as a forum for sharing experiences in dealing with large facility catastrophic events and risk management. We generalize the coset construction of Callan, Coleman, Wess and Zumino to theories in which the Lorentz group is spontaneously broken down to one of its subgroups. This allows us to write down the most general low-energy effective Lagrangian in which Lorentz invariance is non-linearly realized, and to explore the consequences of broken Lorentz symmetry without having to make any assumptions about the mechanism that triggers the breaking. Stock index forecasting is vital for making informed investment decisions. This paper surveys recent literature in the domain of machine learning techniques and artificial intelligence used to forecast stock market movements. The publications are categorised according to the machine learning technique used, the forecasting timeframe, the input variables used, and the evaluation techniques employed. It is found that there is a consensus between researchers stressing the importance of stock index forecasting. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are identified to be the dominant machine learning technique in this area. We conclude with possible future research directions.

Traditionally, academic institutions schedule courses using constraints that ensure that instructors and courses do not overlap in available rooms and time periods; students' planning needs are rarely taken into account. This problem becomes particularly acute for students in liberal arts institutions, because they have multiple graduation requirements in addition to their chosen academic program. My research builds on the University Course Timetabling Problem (UCTP) to include students' scheduling needs. This approach to the UCTP problem uses a combination of a genetic algorithm and case-based reasoning.

This paper presents a method that uses designed experiments and statistical models to extract information about how solver parameter settings perform for classes of mixed integer programs. The use of experimental design facilitates fitting a model that describes the response surface across all combinations of parameter settings, even those not explicitly tested, allowing identification of both desirable and poor settings. Identifying parameter settings that give the best expected performance for a specific class of instances and a specific solver can be used to more efficiently solve a large set of similar instances, or to ensure solvers are being compared at …

The Discovery Of Gamma-Ray Emission From The Blazar Rgb J0710+591, P. T. Reynolds, Et Al

The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object RGB J0710+591 was observed in the very high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) wave band by the VERITAS array of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The observations, taken between 2008 December and 2009 March and totaling 22.1 hr, yield the discovery of VHE gamma rays from the source. RGB J0710+591 is detected at a statistical significance of 5.5 standard deviations (5.5σ) above the background, corresponding to an integral flux of (3.9 ± 0.8) × 10–12 cm–2 s–1 (3% of the Crab Nebula's flux) above 300 GeV. The observed spectrum can be fit by a power law from 0.31 …

The Niobrara River Valley in northern Nebraska is an important floristic area. It harbours a number of bryophyte, vascular plant, and animal species that are rarely found in close proximity to one another. Many of these species are more typical farther to the north, east, or west, but over time as climates have changed, have come to settle together in this valley (Kaul et al. 1988). In this study, we explored the relationship between the strength of pre-service teachers’ algebraic thinking and the characteristics of the questions they posed during cognitive interviews that focused on probing the algebraic thinking of middle school students. We developed a performance rubric to evaluate the strength of pre-service teachers’ algebraic thinking across 130 algebra-based tasks. We used an existing coding scheme found in the literature to analyze the characteristics of the questions pre-service teachers posed during clinical interviews. We found that pre-service teachers with higher algebraic thinking abilities were able to pose probing questions that uncovered student thinking through the …

In this study we examined the relationship between 18 pre-service middle school teachers’ own ability to use algebraic thinking to solve problems and their ability to recognize and interpret the algebraic thinking of middle school students. We assessed the pre-service teachers’ own algebraic thinking by examining their solutions and explanations to multiple algebra-based tasks posed during a semester-long mathematics content course. We assessed their ability to recognize and interpret the algebraic thinking of students in two ways. The use of a short-pulse petawatt (PW) laser (sub-200 fs duration, ~ 1 micron wavelength) enables experimental realization of a self-guided, multicentimetre-long multi-GeV laser wakefield electron accelerator. A comprehensive set of numerical simulations showed that a 150 fs, 1.33 PW pulse is self- guided over 10 cm of a static filling gaseous plasma of density 1–3 x 10^{17} cm^{−3} and is stable against relativistic filamentation. A fully broken electromagnetic wake (electron density ‘bubble’) is excited over the entire interaction length. Variations of bubble size and shape associated with nonlinear evolution of the driving pulse result in self-injection of background plasma …

We report ‘snapshots’ of laser-generated plasma accelerator structures acquired by frequency domain holography (FDH) and frequency domain shadowgraphy (FDS), techniques for visualizing quasi-static objects propagating near the speed of light. FDH captures images of sinusoidal wakes in mm-length plasmas of density 1 < n_{e} < 5 x 10^{18} cm^{−3} from phase modulations they imprint on co-propagating probe pulses. Changes in the wake structure (such as the curvature of the wavefront), caused by the laser and plasma parameter variations from shot to shot, were observed. FDS visualizes lasergenerated electron density bubbles in mm-length plasmas of density n_{e} > 10^{19} cm^{−3} using amplitude modulations they imprint on co-propagating probe pulses. Variations in the spatio-temporal structure of bubbles are inferred from corresponding variations in the shape of ‘bullets’ of probe light trapped inside them and correlated with mono-energetic electron generation. Both FDH and FDS average over structural variations that occur during propagation through the plasma medium. We explore …

We use a 3-D global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) to interpret aircraft observations of nitrate and sulfate partitioning in transpacific dust plumes during the INTEX-B campaign of April–May 2006. The model includes explicit transport of size-resolved mineral dust and its alkalinity, nitrate, and sulfate content. The observations show that particulate nitrate is primarily associated with dust, sulfate is primarily associated with ammonium, and Asian dust remains alkaline across the Pacific. This can be reproduced in the model by using a reactive uptake coefficient for HNO3 on dust (γ(HNO3) ~10−3) much lower than commonly assumed in …

The proteome-wide characterization and analysis of protein ligand-binding sites and their interactions with ligands can provide pivotal information in understanding the structure, function and evolution of proteins and for designing safe and efficient therapeutics. The SMAP web service (SMAP-WS) meets this need through parallel computations designed for 3D ligand-binding site comparison and similarity searching on a structural proteome scale. Lipids and fatty acids (FA) were investigated in 4 species of forage fish: northern anchovy Engraulis mordax, Pacific sardine Sardinops sagax, Pacific herring Clupea pallasi, and whitebait smelt Allosmerus elongatus, for their ability to serve as biological indicators of ocean conditions in the California Current large marine ecosystem (CCLME). Modeling Bound States In The Continuum For Multiple Electrons In A Quantum Dot Pair, Thomas Ian Tuegel

The bound eigenstates of an electron inside a pair of quantum dots embedded on an infinite quantum wire are examined using the method of particular solutions. The eigenstates of a two-electron system in the same structure are examined perturbatively using wavefunction expansions for the one-electron eigenstates. The stability of the two-electron eigenstates is evaluated and compared with other theoretical results. It is found that stable bound states in the continuum exist for two electrons confined to this geometry.

Basin pools are the diagnostic feature of Coastal Karren landscape at temperate settings. According to the size and connectivity parameters four morphological zones are identified along limestone coastal profiles. Each zone reflects the balance between the effects of physical and chemical weathering-erosion agents. Broadly, marine abrasion, bioerosion and biological driven solution show a larger influence seaward, whereas non-biological driven solution enhances its participation landward
