Chemistry - All Scholarship

We measure the cytotoxicity of three metal complexes containing the 2,2′-bypyridine ligand, Cu(bpy)(NCS) 2, 1, [Cu(bpy) 2(H 2O)](PF 6) 2, 2, and Zn(bpy) 2(NCS) 2, 3, toward neuroblastoma cells (SK-N-SH) and ovarian cancer cells (OVCAR-3) using two different cell assays. The cells were exposed to various concentrations of the compounds for 1 h and the percent inhibition of cell growth, I, measured for various times after exposure, i.e., as a function of the recovery time t. After developing the theory showing the relationship between I and t, the cytotoxicity data were analyzed to …

Isolated photon production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 320 pb - 1. Measurements were made in the isolated-photon transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 4 < E Tγ < 15 GeV and - 0.7 < η γ < 0.9 for exchanged photon virtualities, Q 2, in the range 10 < Q 2 < 350 GeV 2 and for invariant masses of the hadronic system W X > 5 GeV. Differential cross sections are presented for inclusive isolated photon production as functions of Q 2, x, E Tγ and η γ. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo simulations and perturbative QCD predictions give a reasonable description of the data over most of the kinematic range. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Kaluza-Klein Theory With Torsion Confined To The Extra-Dimension, Karthik H. Shankar, Kameshwar C. Wali Apr 2010

Kaluza-Klein Theory With Torsion Confined To The Extra-Dimension, Karthik H. Shankar, Kameshwar C. Wali

Physics - All Scholarship

Here we consider a variant of the 5 dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory within the framework of Einstein-Cartan formalism that includes torsion. By imposing a set of constraints on torsion and Ricci rotation coefficients, we show that the torsion components are completely expressed in terms of the metric. Moreover, the Ricci tensor in 5D corresponds exactly to what one would obtain from torsion-free general relativity on a 4D hypersurface. The contributions of the scalar and vector elds of the standard K-K theory to the Ricci tensor and the affine connections are completely nulli ed by the contributions from torsion. As a consequence, …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Biosynthesis of lysine and meso-diaminopimelic acid in bacteria provides essential components for protein synthesis and construction of the bacterial peptidoglycan cell wall. The dapE operon enzymes synthesize both meso-diaminopimelic acid and lysine and, therefore, represent potential targets for novel antibacterials. The dapE-encoded N-succinyl-l,l-diaminopimelic acid desuccinylase functions in a late step of the pathway and converts N-succinyl-l,l-diaminopimelic acid to l,l-diaminopimelic acid and succinate. Deletion of the dapE gene is lethal to Helicobacter pylori and Mycobacterium smegmatis, indicating that DapE's are essential for cell growth and proliferation. Since there are no similar pathways in humans, inhibitors …

Electron density bubbles—wake structures generated in plasma of density n_{e} ~ 10^{19} cm^{-3} by the light pressure of intense ultrashort laser pulses—are shown to reshape weak copropagating probe pulses into optical ‘‘bullets.’’ The bullets are reconstructed using frequency-domain interferometric techniques in order to visualize bubble formation. Bullets are confined in three dimensions to plasma-wavelength size, and exhibit higher intensity, broader spectrum and flatter temporal phase than surrounding probe light, evidence of their compression by the bubble. Bullets observed at 0.8 < n_{e} < 1.2 x 10^{19} cm^{-3} provide the first observation of bubble formation below the electron capture threshold. At higher n_{e}, bullets appear with high shot-to-shot stability together with relativistic electrons that vary widely in spectrum, and help relate bubble formation to fast electron generation.

Representing Propositional Logic Connectives With Modular Polynomials, Shawn Davis Apr 2010

Representing Propositional Logic Connectives With Modular Polynomials, Shawn Davis

McNair Scholars Research Journal

This paper explores the relationship between n-valued propositional logic connectives and modular polynomials. Namely the representing of logic connectives using modular polynomials. The case for n = 2 is explored and a method is developed for finding the coefficients of the unique polynomial that represents any given binary logic connective. Examples are then given for using the modular polynomial representations of connectives to determine the validity of propositional arguments. A similar procedure is shown for when n = 3 and an evaluation of the axioms of Łukasiewicz’s 3-valued logic is given using modular polynomials. The general case is explored to …

Metastable Oxygen Atom Detection Using Rare Gas Matrices, Wladyslaw Kedzierski, E Blejdea, Aldo Dicarlo, J. W. Mcconkey

Physics Publications

The use of solid rare gas matrices as detectors of metastable oxygen atoms is investigated. A 100 eV electron beam colliding with N2O target gas is used as the source of O(1S). The parameters considered are surface temperature, time delay of excimer emission and spectral response to O(1S). In all cases, detector sensitivity maximized at temperatures ≤20 K. Krypton was found to provide the most sensitive surface and neon the least.

Pretty Lights, Nicholas (Nick) Delmas, Matthew (Matt) Maniaci

Computer Engineering

Digital media players often include a visualization component that allows a user to watch a visualization synchronized to their music or videos. This project uses the visualization plugin API of an existing media playback program (WinAmp) but it displays its visuals using physical LED lights. Instead of outputting visuals to the computer screen, data is sent over USB to a micro controller that runs the LED lights. This project aims to give users a more visceral visual experience than traditional visualizations on the computer screen.

On Measuring The Quality Of Wikipedia Articles, Gabriel De La Calzada, Alex Dekhtyar Apr 2010

On Measuring The Quality Of Wikipedia Articles, Gabriel De La Calzada, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper discusses an approach to modeling and measuring information quality of Wikipedia articles. The approach is based on the idea that the quality of Wikipedia articles with distinctly different profiles needs to be measured using different information quality models. We report on our initial study, which involved two categories of Wikipedia articles:”stabilized” (those, whose content has not undergone major changes for a significant period of time) and”controversial” (the articles, which have undergone vandalism, revert wars, or whose content is subject to internal discussions between Wikipedia editors). We present simple information quality models and compare their performance on a subset …

Playing With Recognizers: A Call For An Extensible Editor, Richard Christopher Davis

Research Collection School of Computing and Information Systems

The sketch recognition interface community has not produced a ―killer‖ application, because access to sketch recognition technology has been too restricted. If recognition technologies were more freely available for experimentation, powerful new applications would evolve. This paper proposes a rough architecture for an extensible graphical editor that facilitates collaboration between recognition technology developers, user interface designers, and early adopters of sketch recognition interfaces. Only by serving all three communities will we reach the critical mass necessary for killer applications to emerge.

Applying Metric Regularity To Compute Condition Measure Of Smoothing Algorithm For Matrix Games, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Javier Peña, Vera Roshchina

Mathematics Research Reports

Abstract. We develop an approach of variational analysis and generalized differentiation to conditioning issues for two-person zero-sum matrix games. Our major results establish precise relationships between a certain condition measure of the smoothing first-order algorithm proposed in (4] and the exact bound of metric regularity for an associated set-valued mapping. In this way we compute the aforementioned condition measure in terms of the initial matrix game data.

A Derivation Of Π(N) Based On A Stability Analysis Of The Riemann-Zeta Function, Michael Harney, Ioannis Haranas

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The prime-number counting function π(n), which is significant in the prime number theorem, is derived by analyzing the region of convergence of the real-part of the Riemann- Zeta function using the unilateral z-transform. In order to satisfy the stability criteria of the z-transform, it is found that the real part of the Riemann-Zeta function must converge to the prime-counting function.

Regressive Functions On Pairs, Andrés Eduardo Caicedo Apr 2010

Regressive Functions On Pairs, Andrés Eduardo Caicedo

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We compute an explicit upper bound for the regressive Ramsey numbers by a combinatorial argument, the corresponding function being of Ackermannian growth. For this, we look at the more general problem of bounding g(n, m), the least l such that any regressive function ƒ: [m, l][2]→ℕ admits a min-homogeneous set of size n. Analysis of this function also leads to the simplest known proof that the regressive Ramsey numbers have rate of growth at least Ackermannian. Together, these results give a purely combinatorial proof that, for each m, g …

Least Squares Problems With Inequality Constraints As Quadratic Constraints, Jodi Mead, Rosemary A. Renaut Apr 2010

Least Squares Problems With Inequality Constraints As Quadratic Constraints, Jodi Mead, Rosemary A. Renaut

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Linear least squares problems with box constraints are commonly solved to find model parameters within bounds based on physical considerations. Common algorithms include Bounded Variable Least Squares (BVLS) and the Matlab function lsqlin. Here, the goal is to find solutions to ill-posed inverse problems that lie within box constraints. To do this, we formulate the box constraints as quadratic constraints, and solve the corresponding unconstrained regularized least squares problem. Using box constraints as quadratic constraints is an efficient approach because the optimization problem has a closed form solution.

The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is investigated through solving three …

Traveling And Stationary Intrinsic Localized Modes And Their Spatial Control In Electrical Lattices, Lq English, F Palmero, Aj Sievers, Pg Kevrekidis, Dh Barnak

Panos Kevrekidis

This work focuses on the production of both stationary and traveling intrinsic localized modes (ILMs), also known as discrete breathers, in two closely related electrical lattices; we demonstrate experimentally that the interplay between these two ILM types can be utilized for the purpose of spatial control. We describe a novel mechanism that is responsible for the motion of driven ILMs in this system, and quantify this effect by modeling in some detail the electrical components comprising the lattice.
