Selective Regulation Of Aromatase Expression For Drug Discovery, Robert W. Brueggemeier, Bin Su, Michael V. Darby, Yasuro Sugimoto

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Aromatase is a particularly attractive drug target in the treatment of hormone-responsive breast cancer, and aromatase activity in breast cancer patients is greater in or near the tumor tissue compared with the normal breast tissue. Complex regulation of aromatase expression in human tissues involves alternative promoter sites that provide tissue-specific control. Previous studies in our laboratories suggested a strong association between aromatase (CYP19) gene expression and the expression of cyclooxygenase (COX) genes. Additionally, COX selective inhibitors can suppress CYP19 gene expression and decrease aromatase activity. Our current hypothesis is that pharmacological regulation of aromatase can act locally to decrease the …

Application Of Combinatorial Structures To Key Predistribution In Sensor Networks And Traitor Tracing., Sushmita Ruj Dr.

Doctoral Theses

From time immemorial people have used cryptography for secure communication. Cryptography has decided the fate of many kings and queens as well as the outcome of various wars. It has become all the more important nowadays, with the growing need of electronic communication. We now live in a society where electronic networks pervade all aspects of our professional and private lives. We all use cryptography when we do bank transfers by ATM, or SWIFT, while using the mobile phones and i-phones, SSL protocols or using password protected machines. Though electronic communication is fast and easy, it is vulnerable to security …

Application Of Sol-Gel Technology In The Of Activation Process Of Chemical Plating Pretreatment, Lin Zhang, Wei Wang, Qian-Zhen Wu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Using KH-550 as precursors, gel thin films were formed on fabric by sol-gel method.By complexed with palladium ions due to the presences of amido and hydroxide in the gel thin films, the aggregation of palladium particles was inhibited. Therefore,Palladium could exhibit better catalytic activity in the process of electroless plating. The surface morphology of fabric was observed by SPM and SEM.Campared with the traditional pretreatment process,no SnCl2 was needed. This method reduced pollution, shortened process flow and reduced the amount of noble metals.

Journal of Electrochemistry

A new series of amphiphilic liquid crystalline block copolymer thin films, having normally aligned and highly ordered nanocylinder array, were functionalized as anisotropic ion conducting materials by selectively infiltration. These ion-active nanocylinders are coaxially aligned and hexagonally arranged in a large area, which might be used as novel types of electrolyte films for electrochemical energy systems such as lithium ion battery, fuel cell, etc.Since the ordered cylinders can carry on and store the ions, the block copolymer films can be utilized as the advanced template to fabricate the ordered array of nanoporous, nanoparticles, and nanowires for the potential application in lithium ion battery as three dimensional electrode materials.

Studied Corrosion Behaviors Of Reinforcing Steel In Concrete By A Single-Dimensional Array Electrode, Lan-Qiang Li, Shi-Gang Dong, Rong-Gui Du, Chang-Jian Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

A single-dimensional array electrode was developed as a new electrochemical technique to image corrosion potential, galvanic current and polarization curves of reinforcing steel in concrete during corrosion process.Combining with the polarization behavior for each micro-electrode,the interactions between corrosion macrocell and corrosion microcell of the steel in concrete were evaluated. It was noticed that the corrosion macrocell and microcell occurred independently in difference regions at the initial stage of corrosion. The corrosion macrocell current can be in situ followed by corrosion potential imaging. The corrosion propagation of steel in concrete is closely related to the interactions between corrosion macrocell and corrosion microcell.

The Electrochemical Characteristics Of Cpo-Pll/Gc Electrode, Wen Zhao, Xia-Qin Wu, Zhong-Qing Lu, Wen-Jing Hou, He-Xing Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

Poly-L-lysine(PLL) was electropolymerized onto the surface of glassy carbon(GC) electrode.1[(3-dimethylamino)propyl]-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride(EDC) was used as a Cross-linking agent to immobilized Chloroperoxidase(CPO) onto the PLL/GC electrode.A pair of well-defined redox peaks was observed at CPO-PLL/GC electrode, which clearly suggested that PLL can promote the direct electron transfer between the CPO and the GC electrodes. The cyclic voltammetry results also showed that the electron transfer at CPO-PLL/GC is a surface adsorption-controlled quasi-reversible process, which is accompanied with proton transfer. The CPO-PLL/GC electrode exhibited a good electrochemical stability and excellently electrocatalytic activity for electrochemical reduction of O2.

Journal of Electrochemistry

Titanium and its alloys have been widely used as medical implant materials because of their good mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, the physiological corrosion of metal will release metal ions, resulting in toxic and side effects. In this paper,in order to improve the corrosion resistance of titanium, and to enhance its bioactivity and osseointegration, the surface modification of titamum were performed.Using eletrochemical methods Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) were applied to study the electrochemical corrosion behavior of TiO2 /HA composite coating. It is indicated that the corrosion resistance of the prepared TiO2 /Ti material in Tyrode's physiological solution is improved because of the enhanced surface barrier.

Geodetic Imaging Of Plate Motions, Slip Rates, And Partitioning Of Deformation In Japan, John P. Loveless, Brendan J. Meade

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Interseismic deformation in Japan results from the combined effects of tectonic processes including rotation of crustal blocks and the earthquake cycle process of elastic strain accumulation about upper plate faults and subduction zone interfaces. We use spherical linear block theory constrained by geodetic observations from densely spaced Global Positioning System (GPS) stations to estimate plate motions, fault slip rates, and spatially variable interplate coupling on the Japan-Kuril, Sagami, and Nankai subduction zones. The reference model developed in this paper consists of 20 blocks, produces a mean residual velocity magnitude of 1.84 mm/yr at 950 stations, and accounts for 96% of …
