This paper explores the debates around civil society and corporatism as ways of understanding changes in social association, including non-governmental organisations and protest groups, and information management in relation to the development of the Internet. Both concepts have been used to examine the changes that have taken place since the implementation of the Open Door Policy and more recently the development of the Internet, and have shed light on the way in which new forms of social association operate, and on their relationship to the government. Convective Inertia Effects On The Squeeze Film Between Rectangular Parallel Plates, Sikiru Adigun Sanni

This paper investigates the effects of convective inertia on the lubricating characteristics of the squeeze film between parallel rectangular plates. Relaxing a simplifying assumption of the conventional lubrication theory, the paper retains some terms of the convective inertia terms of the Navier-Stokes equations, leading to a derivation of a modified Reynolds equation. The introduction of the convective inertia terms induces two inversely related dimensionless parameters, m and R (the Reynolds number), into the characteristics of the flow behavior. Alpine glaciers have receded substantially over the last century in many regions of the world. Resulting changes in glacial runoff not only affect the hydrological cycle, but can also alter the physical (i.e., turbidity from glacial flour) and biogeochemical properties of downstream ecosystems. Here we compare nutrient concentrations, transparency gradients, algal biomass, and fossil diatom species richness in two sets of high-elevation lakes: those fed by snowpack melt alone (SF lakes) and those fed by both glacial and snowpack meltwaters (GSF lakes). The Nebraska Sand Hills are a distinctive eco-region in the semi-arid Great Plains of the western United States. The water table underlying the Sand Hills is part of the High Plains/ Ogallala aquifer, an important water resource for the central Great Plains. Lake levels are affected directly by fluctuations in the water table, which is recharged primarily by local precipitation and responds quickly to climatically induced changes in regional water balance. Instrumental records are available for only 50–100 years, and paleolimnological data provide important insights into the extremes and variability in moisture balance over longer time scales. Lakes of varying salinity are ubiquitous in dune environments with semiarid climates. Often these lakes become solute traps due to specific groundwater flow conditions. Over geological time after emergence of such lakes, the groundwater flow and mass transport processes lead to accumulation of solutes. This salinity increase can result in mineral deposition and free convection from lakes. However, high solute concentrations in these lakes are often not observed. We propose a conceptual model that estimates the lake salinity dynamics and yields concentration profiles beneath the lakes over centennial and millennial scales. Although irrigated agriculture is the primary consumer of global groundwater resources, information on recharge rates and sustainable irrigation is limited. The study objective was to fingerprint irrigation return flow to quantify percolation/recharge and to estimate sustainable irrigation levels. This paper focuses on water quantity; a companion paper addresses water quality. Soil samples from 13 boreholes drilled beneath irrigated agroecosystems in the southern High Plains were analyzed for matric potential and waterextractable Cl and NO3. Trade‐offs between water‐resource depletion and salinization need to be understood when promoting water‐conservative irrigation practices. This companion paper assesses impacts of groundwater‐fed irrigation on soil water and groundwater quality using data from the southern High Plains (SHP). Unsaturated zone soil samples from 13 boreholes beneath irrigated agroecosystems were analyzed for water‐extractable anions. Salt accumulation in soils varies with irrigation water quality, which ranges from low salinity in the north (median Cl: 21 mg/L) to higher salinity in the south (median Cl: 180 mg/L). Effects of the Arctic oscillation (AO) on summer rainfall variability in the central United States are examined in order to improve understanding and prediction of the interannual variation in the summer rainfall. Major results show persistent AO effects that resulted in less summer rainfall in the central United States during the positive phase of the AO and more rainfall during the negative AO phase. These effects are most prominent at the interannual time scale. We use an ensemble of satellite (MODIS), aircraft, and ground‐based aerosol observations during the ICARTT field campaign over eastern North America in summer 2004 to (1) examine the consistency between different aerosol measurements, (2) evaluate a new retrieval of aerosol optical depths (AODs) and inferred surface aerosol concentrations (PM2.5) from the MODIS satellite instrument, and (3) apply this collective information to improve our understanding of aerosol sources. Long chain alkenones (LCA) are temperature-sensitive lipids with great potential for quantitative reconstruction of past continental climate. We conducted the first survey for alkenone biomarkers from 55 different lakes in the Northern Great Plains and Nebraska Sand Hills of the United States. Among those surveyed, we found 13 lakes that contain LCAs in the surface sediments. The highest concentrations of alkenones in sediments are found in cold (mean annual air temperature ~11 °C versus 17 °C in our warmest sites), brackish to mesosaline (salinity = 8.5–9.7 g/L), and alkaline (pH = 8.4–9.0) lakes with high concentrations of sodium and sulfate. …

Student preparedness in entry level college mathematics courses has decreased in the past. In order for students to be successful in these courses, early intervention is required. Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has implemented an early intervention program, the Mathematics Enrichment Program (MEP), which will target freshman students entering College Algebra courses in Spring 2009. This project is part of the STEM Recruitment, Retention, and Graduation program, recently funded by the US Department of Education. This paper will highlight the components of the project, most importantly the extent of the intervention, how the project is planned, and preliminary results.

The derivation of the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher formula for the number of partitions of n is reviewed. Next, the steps for finding analogous formulas for certain restricted classes of partitions or overpartitions is examined, bearing in mind how these calculations can be automated in a CAS. Finally, a number of new formulas of this type which were conjectured with the aid of Mathematica are presented along with results of a test for their numerical accuracy.

Lucy Slater used Bailey's 6ψ6 summation formula to derive the Bailey pairs she used to construct her famous list of 130 identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type.

In the present paper we apply the same techniques to Chu's 10ψ10 generalization of Bailey's formula to produce quite general Bailey pairs. Slater's Bailey pairs are then recovered as special limiting cases of these more general pairs.

In re-examining Slater's work, we find that her Bailey pairs are, for the most part, special cases of more general Bailey pairs containing one or more free parameters. Further, we also find new …

First we improve a result of Tanno that says "If a conformal vector field on a contact metric manifold M is a strictly infinitesimal contact transformation, then it is an infinitesimal automorphism of M" by waiving the "strictness" in the hypothesis. Next, we prove that a (k, μ)-contact manifold admitting a non-Killing conformal vector field is either Sasakian or has k = –n – 1, μ = 1 in dimension > 3; and Sasakian or flat in dimension 3. We review current understanding of the potential impact of climate change on the Chesapeake Bay. Scenarios for CO2 emissions indicate that by the end of the 21st century the Bay region will experience significant changes in climate forcings with respect to historical conditions, including increases in CO2 concentrations, sea level, and water temperature of 50–160%, 0.7–1.6m, and 2–6C, respectively. Also likely are increases in precipitation amount (very likely in the winter and spring), precipitation intensity, intensity of tropical and extratropical cyclones (though their frequency may decrease), and sea-level variability. Exposed along the southeast fl ank of the Colorado Front Range are rocks that beautifully illustrate the interplay of sedimentation and tectonics. Two major rangebounding faults, the Ute Pass fault and the Rampart Range fault, converge on the Garden of the Gods region west of Colorado Springs. Cambrian through Cretaceous strata upturned by these faults reveal in their grain compositions, textures, and bedforms radically different styles of sedimentation. The Cambrian/Ordovician marine transgressive deposits appear to have come to rest on a passive and tectonically inactive craton. In contrast, coarse-grained Pennsylvanian/Permian marine deposits of the Fountain Formation and Lyons Sandstone reveal …

This paper presents the results of a simulated wireless DoS attack against a 802.11g connection that uses Single Input Single Output (SISO), and an 802.11n device that utilizes MIMO. The aim of the experiment was to determine whether the impact of a denial of service attack against MIMO architecture is greater than SISO, since it is capable of receiving more(multiple) attack frames/packets within a given time frame. It was found that both devices were negatively impacted by such attacks, and that throughout was similarly affected. Search For Higgs Boson Production In Dilepton And Missing Energy Final States With 5.4 Fb-1 Of Pp Collisions At √S = 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

A search for the standard model Higgs boson is presented using events with two charged leptons and large missing transverse energy selected from 5.4 fb-1 of integrated luminosity in pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No significant excess of events above background predictions is found, and observed (expected) upper limits at 95% confidence level on the rate of Higgs boson production are derived that are a factor of 1.55 (1.36) above the predicted standard model cross section at mH = 165 GeV.

The CMS experiment at CERN is preparing for LHC data taking in several
computing preparation activities. In early 2007 a traffic load generator infrastructure for distributed data transfer tests was designed and deployed to equip the WLCG tiers which support the CMS virtual organization with a means for debugging, load-testing and commissioning data transfer routes among CMS computing centres. The LoadTest is based upon PhEDEx as a reliable, scalable data set replication system. Bose-Einstein correlations have been measured using samples of proton-proton collisions at 0.9 and 2.36 TeV center-of-mass energies, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is observed in the form of an enhancement of pairs of same-sign charged particles with small relative four-momentum. The size of the correlated particle emission region is seen to increase significantly with the particle multiplicity of the event.

Malware signature detection has been recognised by researchers to be far less than ideal. Thus, the forensic analyst may be required to manually analyse suspicious files. Efficient stock management in the commercial retail sector is being dominated by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag implementations. Research reports of the security risk of RFID tags show that breaches are likely and that forensic readiness is a requirement. In this paper a RFID tag business simulation is reported that replicates previous research reports of security breaches with the purpose of identifying potential evidence after such attacks. A Read/Write Tag was cloned and used to replicate a SQL poisoning attack on a simulated Business System.
