While weed management is consistently a top priority among farmers, there is also growing concern for the conservation of biodiversity. Maintaining diverse weed communities below bioeconomic thresholds may provide ecosystem services for the crop and the surrounding ecosystem. This study was conducted to determine if weed diversity, density and biomass differ within and among organic and conventional crop rotations. In 2007 and 2008, we sampled weed communities in four long-term crop rotations near Mead, Nebraska, United States using seedbank analyses (elutriation and greenhouse emergence) and above-ground biomass sampling. Reactive power planning (RPP) involves optimal allocation and determination of the type and size of new reactive power (VAR) supplies to satisfy voltage constraints during normal and contingency states. In this work, semiconductor step-index single waveguide has been analyzed by Alpha Method. A requested quantity of wave guide can be obtained in terms of normalized propagation constant, which is represented by alpha belonging to active region. Based on this method, structural properties of the material containing any requested quantity of the waveguide is theoretically calculated, when the width of the active region, the refractive indices of the regions and the wavelength are given. In this study proposed is an off-set-based direct-cover near-minimum minimization method for single-output Boolean functions represented in a sum-of-products form. To obtain the complete set of prime implicants including given on-cube (on-minterm), the proposed method uses off-cubes (off-minterms) expanded by this On-cube. The amount of temporary results produced by this method does not exceed the size of the off-set. To make fast computation, we used logic operations instead of standard operations. Expansion off-cubes, commutative absorption operations and intersection operations are realized by logic operations for fast computation. This paper presents the results of the Adaptive-Network Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) for the prediction of path loss in a specific urban environment. A new algorithm based ANFIS for tuning the path loss model is introduced in this work. The performance of the path loss model which is obtained from proposed algorithm is compared to the Bertoni-Walfisch model, which is one of the best studied for propagation analysis involving buildings. Tropical cyclones typically form within preexisting wavelike disturbances that couple with convection. Using Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) multisatellite rainfall estimates, this study determines the relative number of tropical cyclones that can be attributed to various wave types, including the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO), Kelvin waves, equatorial Rossby (ER) waves, mixed Rossby-gravity (MRG) waves, and tropical depression (TD)-type disturbances. Tropical cyclogenesis is attributed to an equatorial wave's convection when the filtered rainfall anomaly exceeds a threshold value at the genesis location.

The next generation of Augmented Reality (AR) games will require real and virtual objects to coexist in motion in immersive game environments. This will require the illusion that real and virtual objects interact physically together in a plausible way. The Motion in Augmented Reality Games (MARG) engine described in this paper has been developed to allow these kinds of game environments. The paper describes the design and implementation of the MARG engine and presents two proof-of-concept AR games that have been developed using it. Matrices employed in composite materials directly influence overall composite properties. In all thermoset materials, molecular level interactions and transformations during cure result in heterogeneous architecture. Variability in connectivity results from the often dramatic spatial and topological changes that occur during the crosslinking process. Compatibility (fillers, pigments, additives), temperature gradients and reactivity differences in the precursors only serve to increase the complexity of network formation. The objective of the research herein is to characterize and understand the relationships between cure conditions, conversion, connectivity, network architecture and properties in glassy thermosetting matrix resins.

Most distributed systems comprise autonomous entities interacting with each other to achieve their objectives. These entities behave selfishly when making decisions. This behavior may result in strategical manipulation of the protocols thus jeopardizing the system wide goals. Micro-economics and game theory provides suitable tools to model such interactions. We use game theory to model and study three specific problems in distributed systems. Clustering is the unsupervised classification of data objects into different groups (clusters) such that objects in one group are similar together and dissimilar from another group. Feature selection for unsupervised learning is a technique that chooses the best feature subset for clustering. In general, unsupervised feature selection algorithms conduct feature selection in a global sense by producing a common feature subset for all the clusters. This, however, can be invalid in clustering practice, where the local intrinsic property of data matters more, which implies that localized feature selection is more desirable.

On the International Space Station (ISS) and space shuttles, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has used robotic manipulators extensively to perform payload handling and maintenance tasks. Teleoperating robots require expert skills and optimal performance is crucial to mission completion and crew safety. Degradation in performance is observed when manual control is mediated through remote camera views, resulting in poor end-effector navigation quality and extended task completion times. In this book the authors introduce the new notion of rank distance bicodes and generalize this concept to Rank Distance n-codes (RD n-codes), n, greater than or equal to three. Infinite sets are a fundamental object of modern mathematics. Surprisingly, the existence of infinite sets cannot be proven within mathematics. Their existence, or even the consistency of their possible existence, must be justified extra-mathematically or taken as an article of faith. We describe here several varieties of large infinite set that have a similar status in mathematics to that of infinite sets, i.e. their existence cannot be proven, but they seem both reasonable and useful. In this paper, we present a new 2-tuple linguistic representation model, i.e. Distribution Function Model (DFM), for combining imprecise qualitative information using fusion rules drawn from Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) framework. Such new approach allows to preserve the precision and efficiency of the combination of linguistic information in the case of either equidistant or unbalanced label model. Some basic operators on imprecise 2-tuple labels are presented together with their extensions for imprecise 2-tuple labels. Land Cover Land Use (LCLU) change affects Earth surface properties including albedo that impose a radiative forcing on the climate. Recent spatially explicit satellite derived contemporary LCLU, albedo, and projected LCLU data are used to study the impact of LCLU change from 1973 to 2000, and from 2000 to 2050, on albedo and surface radiative forcing for the conterminous United States. Four research hypotheses concerned with past and potential future climate implications of LCLU change are addressed. In the fall of 2010, the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP) completed an 18-month effort to understand current and future environmental issues affecting the Region’s estuaries, to establish realistic goals and objectives for the next 10 years, and to create effective action plans to systematically achieve the shared environmental goals of a broad base of Regional stakeholders.
With input from more than 150 individuals, representing 82 organizations, PREP compiled the 2010 Piscataqua Region Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) that lays the foundation for work over the next decade to protect and restore the Region’s estuaries and associated watersheds

PREP Reports & Publications
In the fall of 2010, the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP) completed an 18-month effort to understand current and future environmental issues affecting the Region’s estuaries, to establish realistic goals and objectives for the next 10 years, and to create effective action plans to systematically achieve the shared environmental goals of a broad base of Regional stakeholders.
With input from more than 150 individuals, representing 82 organizations, PREP compiled the 2010 Piscataqua Region Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) that lays the foundation for work over the next decade to protect and restore the Region’s estuaries and associated watersheds.

A magician gives a member of the audience 20 cards to shuffle. After the cards are thoroughly mixed, the magician goes through the deck two cards at a time, sometimes putting the two cards face to face, sometimes back to back, and sometimes in the same direction. Before dealing each pair of cards into a pile, he asks random members of the audience if the pair should be flipped over or not. The assumption that different genetic elements can make separate contributions to the same quantitative trait was originally made in order to reconcile biometry and Mendelism and ever since has been used in population genetics, specifically for the trait of fitness. Here we show that sex is responsible for the existence of separate genetic effects on fitness and, more generally, for the existence of a hierarchy of genetic evolutionary modules. Stability And Dynamics Of Self-Similarity In Evolution Equations, Andrew J. Bernoff, Thomas P. Witelski

A methodology for studying the linear stability of self-similar solutions is discussed. These fundamental ideas are illustrated on three prototype problems: a simple ODE with finite-time blow-up, a second-order semi-linear heat equation with infinite-time spreading solutions, and the fourth-order Sivashinsky equation with finite-time self-similar blow-up. These examples are used to show that self-similar dynamics can be studied using many of the ideas arising in the study of dynamical systems. In particular, the use of dimensional analysis to derive scaling invariant similarity variables is discussed, as well as the role of symmetries in the context of stability of self-similar dynamics.
