For over 100 years, mountain treelines have been the subject of varied research endeavors and remain a strong area of investigation. The purpose of this paper is to examine aspects of the epistemology of mountain treeline research—that is, to investigate how knowledge on treelines has been acquired and the changes in knowledge acquisition over time, through a review of fundamental questions and approaches. The questions treeline researchers have raised and continue to raise have undoubtedly directed the current state of knowledge. A relationship between a pair of Laurent series and Riordan arrays is formulated. In addition, a type of generalized Sheffer groups is defined using Riordan arrays with respect to power series with non-zero coefficients. The isomorphism between a generalized Sheffer group and the group of the Riordan arrays associated with Laurent series is established. Furthermore, Appell, associated, Bell, and hitting-time subgroups of the groups are defined and discussed. A relationship between the generalized Sheffer groups with respect to different power series is presented. This work analyzes the stochastic behavior of writing to embedded flash memory at voltages lower than recom- mended by a microcontroller’s specifications to reduce energy consumption. Flash memory integrated within a microcontroller typically requires the entire chip to op- erate on common supply voltage almost double what the CPU portion requires. Our approach tolerates a lower supply voltage so that the CPU may operate in a more en- ergy efficient manner. Energy efficient coding algorithms then cope with flash memory that behaves unpredictably. Our software-only coding algorithms ( in-place writes , multiple-place writes , RS-Berger codes ) enable reliable storage …

We measure the angular two-point correlation function of sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) from 1.1-millimeter imaging of the COSMOS field with the AzTEC camera and ASTE 10-meter telescope. These data yields one of the largest contiguous samples of SMGs to date, covering an area of 0.72 degrees^2 down to a 1.26 mJy/beam (1-sigma) limit, including 189 (328) sources with S/N greater than 3.5 (3). We can only set upper limits to the correlation length r_0, modeling the correlation function as a power-law with pre-assigned slope. Assuming existing redshift distributions, we derive 68.3% confidence level upper limits of r_0 < 6-8 h^-1 Mpc at …

Mobile alerts, notifications and location-based emergency warning systems are now an established part of mobile government strategies in an increasing number of countries worldwide. In Australia the national emergency warning system (NEWS) was instituted after the tragic Black Saturday Victorian Bushfires of February 2009. An efficient word spotting framework is proposed to search text in scanned books. The proposed method allows one to search for words when optical character recognition (OCR) fails due to noise or for languages where there is no OCR. Given a query word image, the aim is to retrieve matching words in the book sorted by the similarity. In the offline stage, SIFT descriptors are extracted over the corner points of each word image. Those features are quantized into visual terms (visterms) using hierarchical K-Means algorithm and indexed using an inverted file. In the query resolution stage, the candidate matches …

Diffusion curves [OBW*08] provide a flexible tool to create smooth-shaded images from curves defined with colors. The resulting image is typically computed by solving a Poisson equation that diffuses the curve colors to the interior of the image. In this paper we present a new method for solving diffusion curves by using ray tracing. Our approach is analogous to final gathering in global illumination, where the curves define source radiance whose visible contribution will be integrated at a shading pixel to produce a color using stochastic ray tracing. In this paper, we present preliminary work on identifying equivalent structures required by LDA, and how they affect inference of document-specific topic distributions. This work is based on the observation that when occurrences of a particular word type in a document could be explained by multiple topics, inference will almost always force the model to choose between these topics. Not only is this required by the structure of optimal solutions to the LDA inference problem (see lemma 4 of Sontag and Roy \cite{david11:compl}) but, intuitively, this is also why learning the topic-specific distributions over words is possible: by explaining all …

This paper aims to evaluate the accuracy of optical character recognition (OCR) systems on real scanned books. The ground truth e-texts are obtained from the Project Gutenberg website and aligned with their corresponding OCR output using a fast recursive text alignment scheme (RETAS). First, unique words in the vocabulary of the book are aligned with unique words in the OCR output. This process is recursively applied to each text segment in between matching unique words until the text segments become very small. For discrete parametric models, approximate confidence limits perform poorly from a strict frequentist perspective. In principle, exact and optimal confidence limits can be computed using the formula of Buehler (1957), Lloyd and Kabaila (2003). So-called profile upper limits (Kabaila \& Lloyd, 2001) are closely related to Buehler limits and have extremely good properties. Both profile and Buehler limits depend on the probability of a certain tail set as a function of the unknown parameters. Unfortunately, this probability surface is not computable for realistic models. In this paper, importance sampling is used to estimate the surface and hence the confidence limits. …

Existing large-scale scanned book collections have many short- comings for data-driven research, from OCR of variable quality to the lack of accurate descriptive and structural meta-data. We argue that complementary research in inferring relational metadata is important in its own right to support use of these collections and that it can help to mitigate other problems with scanned book collections.

Retrieval from Hindi document image collections is a challenging task. This is partly due to the complexity of the script, which has more than 800 unique ligatures. In addition, segmentation and recognition of individual characters often becomes difficult due to the writing style as well as degradations in the print. For these reasons, robust OCRs are non existent for Hindi. Therefore, Hindi document repositories are not amenable to indexing and retrieval. This paper is a report on the findings of a study conducted on a graduate systems engineering course at an urban university in a group learning environment. The course, IEGR 501 Introduction to Advanced Systems Engineering, was a sixteen week course which took students with backgrounds in Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and prepared them to understand the systems engineering subject matter more. In this research we introduce a new class of multivariate probability models to the marketing literature. Known as “copula models”, they have a number of attractive features. First, they permit the combination of any univariate marginal distributions that need not come from the same distributional family. Second, a particular class of copula models, called “elliptical copula”, have the property that they increase in complexity at a much slower rate than existing multivariate probability models as the number of dimensions increase. Cycling is attracting renewed attention as a mode of transport in western urban environments, yet the determinants of usage are poorly understood. In this paper we investigate some of these using intraday bicycle volumes collected via induction loops located at ten bike paths in the city of Melbourne, Australia, between December 2005 and June 2008. The data are hourly counts at each location, with temporal and spatial disaggregation allowing for the impact of meteorology to be measured accurately for the first time.
