The Reduction Of Storm Surge By Vegetation Canopies: Three-Dimensional Simulations, Y. Peter Sheng, Andrew Lapetina, Gangfeng Ma
The Reduction Of Storm Surge By Vegetation Canopies: Three-Dimensional Simulations, Y. Peter Sheng, Andrew Lapetina, Gangfeng Ma
Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Significant buffering of storm surges by vegetation canopies has been suggested by limited observations and simple numerical studies, particularly following recent Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. Here we simulate storm surge and inundation over idealized topographies using a three-dimensional vegetation-resolving storm surge model coupled to a shallow water wave model and show that a sufficiently wide and tall vegetation canopy reduces inundation on land by 5 to 40 percent, depending upon various storm and canopy parameters. Effectiveness of the vegetation in dissipating storm surge and inundation depends on the intensity and forward speed of the hurricane, as well as the …
Cyanobacteria Dominance In The Oligohaline Waters Of Back Bay, Virginia, Harold G. Marshall
Cyanobacteria Dominance In The Oligohaline Waters Of Back Bay, Virginia, Harold G. Marshall
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Back Bay and its flora have historically been influenced by the interaction of freshwater flow in combination with frequent intrusion of saline water into its basin. These events have resulted in a dynamic environmental setting influencing the abundance and composition of its phytoplankton community. Dominating these oligohaline waters is a diverse representation and high abundance of freshwater filamentous and colonial cyanobacteria. These include the nonheterocystous Planktolyngbya contorta, Planktolyngbya limnetica, and Pseudanabaena limnetica, taxa implicated as bloom producers in Bay waters with N:P molar ratios ranging from 23:1 to 74:1.

SCIAMACHY limb scatter ozone profiles from 2002 to 2008 have been compared with MLS (2005–2008), SABER (2002–2008), SAGE II (2002–2005), HALOE (2002–2005) and ACE-FTS (2004–2008) measurements. The comparison is performed for global zonal averages and heights from 10 to 50 km in one km steps. The validation was performed by comparing monthly mean zonal means and by comparing averages over collocated profiles within a zonal band and month. Both approaches yield similar results. For most of the stratosphere SCIAMACHY agrees to within 10% or better with other correlative data. A systematic bias of SCIAMACHY ozone of up to 100% between …

Ozone data retrieved in the Arctic region from infrared radiance spectra recorded by the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) on board the MetOp-A European satellite are presented. They are compared with in situ and lidar observations obtained during a series of aircraft measurement campaigns as part of the International Polar Year POLARCAT activities in spring and summer 2008. Different air masses were sampled during the campaigns including clean air, polluted plumes originating from anthropogenic sources, forest fire plumes from the three northern continents, and stratospheric-influenced air masses. The comparison between IASI O3 [0–8 km], [0–12 km] partial columns and …
Improving Middle School Math Achievement Using A Web-Based Program And Extended Written Tasks, Sarah Claire Dyer
Improving Middle School Math Achievement Using A Web-Based Program And Extended Written Tasks, Sarah Claire Dyer
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis outlines a dual-intensity approach using a web-based program, MyMathLab, for procedural fluency and, in parallel, extended written tasks for helping students improve their reasoning skills, to learn to use multiple representations, and securing mathematical knowledge. The new Common Core State Standards have increased expectations and achievement goals at all grade levels, the required changes being most significant at earlier grade levels (in elementary and middle schools). It is my assertion that a combined approach, one that encompasses both procedure-oriented practice for fluency and extended written tasks designed to stretch thinking and reasoning is needed to meet these goals.

Investigations Into The Role Of Humic Acid In Biomembrane Permeability And The Effects Of Naturally Formed Gold And Silver Nanoparticles On These Interactions, Loice Marklyne Ojwang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The mechanism and kinetics of the interaction of humic acids (HAs) with a 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-Sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (POPC) large unilamellar vesicle (LUV) model biomembrane system were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. All three HAs studied induced a perturbation to the biomembrane bilayer structure at pH 4.8. Concentration dependence studies revealed that biomembrane perturbation increased with increasing HA concentrations for Suwannee River HA (SWHA) from 0 to 20 mg C/L. For both Leonardite HA (LAHA) and Florida Peat HA (FPHA) aggregation influenced biomembrane perturbation at concentrations above 5 and 7.5 mg C/L, respectively. Temperature studies over the environmentally relevant ranges of 10 to 30 °C …

Population Dynamics Of The Eastern Oyster In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Benjamin S. Eberline
LSU Master's Theses
This project examined the economically and ecologically valuable eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) in the Northern Gulf of Mexico using field and laboratory experiments. Specifically, this project focused on natural rates of settlement, growth, and mortality in a variety of temperature and salinity regimes within Breton Sound, LA. Seed and market sized oysters in cages resting on the bottom, as well as settlement tiles, were monitored at four sites in Breton Sound, LA, along what is typically a salinity gradient ranging from ~5 to ~20. In April 2010, the Caernarvon Freshwater Diversion was fully opened with the goal of minimizing the …
On The Witt Groups Of Schemes, Jeremy Allen Jacobson
On The Witt Groups Of Schemes, Jeremy Allen Jacobson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We consider two questions about the Witt groups of schemes: the first is the question of finite generation of the shifted Witt groups of a smooth variety over a finite field; the second is the Gersten conjecture. Regarding the first, we prove that the shifted Witt groups of curves and surfaces are finite, and that finite generation of the motivic cohomology groups with mod 2 coefficients implies finite generation of the Witt groups. Regarding the second, we prove the Gersten conjecture for the Witt groups in the case of a local ring that is essentially smooth over a discrete valuation …
In Defense Of A Fluctuating-Interface, Particle-Accretion Origin Of Folia, Donald G. Davis
In Defense Of A Fluctuating-Interface, Particle-Accretion Origin Of Folia, Donald G. Davis
International Journal of Speleology
Two recent papers have proposed radically different modes of origin for cave folia. Audra et al. (2009) propose subaqueous origin of carbonate folia via hypogenic CO2 bubble trapping, with concurrent condensation-corrosion and evaporative precipitation within individual folia gas pockets. Queen (2009) proposes that at least some folia are analogous to suboceanic tufa-tower "flanges" and may result from subaqueous freshwater mixing into a briny environment. The purpose of this paper is to show that neither of these mechanisms can be the fundamental process responsible for folia morphology in cave deposits, and that accretion from adherent particles at fluctuating interfaces is …

The World’S Deepest Subterranean Community - Krubera-Voronja Cave (Western Caucasus), Alberto Sendra, Ana Sofia P.S. Reboleira
International Journal of Speleology
Subsurface biota extends over a wide variety of habitats that can be spatially interconnected. The largest communities of this subsurface biota inhabit cavities and are well known mainly in caves where biologists are able to have access. Data about deep subterranean communities and arthropods living under one thousand meters was unknown.
An expedition to world’s deepest cave, Krubera-Voronja in Western Caucasus, revealed an interesting subterranean community, living below 2000 meters and represented by more than 12 species of arthropods, including several new species for science. This deep cave biota is composed of troglobionts and also epigean species, that can penetrate …
Software Architectural Support For Tangible User Interfaces In Distributed, Heterogeneous Computing Environments, Cornelius Toole
Software Architectural Support For Tangible User Interfaces In Distributed, Heterogeneous Computing Environments, Cornelius Toole
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This research focuses on tools that support the development of tangible interaction-based applications for distributed computing environments. Applications built with these tools are capable of utilizing heterogeneous resources for tangible interaction and can be reconfigured for different contexts with minimal code changes. Current trends in computing, especially in areas such as computational science, scientific visualization and computer supported collaborative work, foreshadow increasing complexity, distribution and remoteness of computation and data. These trends imply that tangible interface developers must address concerns of both tangible interaction design and networked distributed computing. In this dissertation, we present a software architecture that supports separation …

Function And Diversity Of The Ship, Trinity, And Tiger Shoal Complex, With Emphasis On Macrofauna And Spawning Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus), Carey George Gelpi Jr.
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The ecological and economic value of sandy shoals off the Louisiana coast is not well understood. During three years of comprehensive benthic sampling and environmental measurements I studied the Ship, Trinity, Tiger Shoal Complex (STTSC), which comprises changing and discrete benthic habitats including high relief sandy shoals, and muddier, mostly deeper off-shoal areas, prone to hypoxia. Benthic macrofaunal assemblages of shoals included endemic species, and shoal communities were significantly different from each other and the muddier offshoal habitat, contributing to northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) regional biodiversity. Sand percentage was the most influential environmental parameter shaping macrofaunal community composition across …

Movements, Growth, And Mortality Of Chesapeake Bay Summer Flounder Based On Multiple Tagging Technologies, Mark J. Henderson
Movements, Growth, And Mortality Of Chesapeake Bay Summer Flounder Based On Multiple Tagging Technologies, Mark J. Henderson
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The research projects presented in this dissertation used multiple tagging technologies to examine the movements, growth, and mortality rates of summer flounder tagged and released in Chesapeake Bay. In the first two chapters, I used acoustic, archival, and conventional tags to examine the behavior of summer flounder on different spatial scales. Investigating the movement behavior of individuals on different scales is an important step towards understanding how large-scale distributions of a population are established. Based on the observed behaviors of summer flounder, I hypothesize that the movements of these fish are primarily related to foraging behavior while they are resident …

Developing An Unstructured Grid, Coupled Storm Surge, Wind Wave And Inundation Model For Super-Regional Applications, Yi-Cheng Teng
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
During extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes and nor'easters, both the currents and wind waves generated by the atmospheric forces are important. Although they may act and dominate on different temporal and spatial scales, their interactions and combined effects are without doubt significant. In this dissertation, a major effort has been made to couple an unstructured grid circulation model SELFE (semi-implicit, Eulerian-Lagrangian finite element model) and the WWM II (Wind Wave model II). Moreover, this new coupled model system can be executed in a parallel computational environment. After the coupled model was successfully built, the model was verified with ideal …
High Order Les For Supersonic Ramp Flow Control With Mvg, Yonghua Yan
High Order Les For Supersonic Ramp Flow Control With Mvg, Yonghua Yan
Mathematics Dissertations
An implicitly implemented large eddy simulation by using the fifth order bandwidth-optimized WENO scheme is applied to make comprehensive studies on ramp flows with and without control at Mach 2.5 and Re=5760. Flow control in the form of microramp vortex generators (MVG) is applied. The results show that MVG can distinctly reduce the separation zone at the ramp corner and lower the boundary layer shape factor under the condition of the computation. A series of new findings are obtained about the MVG-ramp flow including the three-dimensional vortex structure generated by MVG. The mechanism about the formation vortex ring structure and …
Effects Of Vector Migration On Sylvatic Trypanosoma Cruzi Transmission, Britnee A. Crawford
Effects Of Vector Migration On Sylvatic Trypanosoma Cruzi Transmission, Britnee A. Crawford
Mathematics Dissertations
Vector-borne diseases have had a major impact on global health concerns since their discovery in the 1800's. A vector-borne disease is one transmitted to human or animal host via an invertebrate vector (usually an insect). Chagas' disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is transmitted via insect vectors from the Triatoma family. Although human infection with Chagas' is of importance, the disease is maintained in sylvatic (in the wild) transmission cycles. This study examines the effects of vector migration on the spread of T. cruzi in certain sylvatic cycles in the southeastern U.S. and Mexico from several angles. First, a …
Detection And Characterization Of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (Epfrs) In Soils And Sediments From Superfund Sites, Albert Leo N. Dela Cruz
Detection And Characterization Of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (Epfrs) In Soils And Sediments From Superfund Sites, Albert Leo N. Dela Cruz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) from combustion-generated PM have been demonstrated to form via reactions of molecular precursors with redox-active transition metals at 150-500C thermal reactions in a few seconds reaction times. While ambient temperatures are much lower, soils/sediments contain similar transition metals, and reaction times of contaminants in soils/sediments are years, rather than seconds. This questions whether EPFRs could be formed at ambient temperatures in soils/sediments from Superfund sites that are contaminated with hazardous materials. Superfund soils contaminated with PCP from Georgia and Montana, and sediments contaminated with PAHs from Washington. Using EPR spectroscopy, EPFR concentrations and structural assignments …
Ionic Materials For Applications In Sensing And Optoelectronics, Sergio L. De Rooy
Ionic Materials For Applications In Sensing And Optoelectronics, Sergio L. De Rooy
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Organic salts consist of bulky anions and/or cations whose properties can be tailored for specific purposes. Ionic liquids (ILs) are (semi)organic salts with melting points below 100 ºC. They typically exhibit neglible vapor pressures, high thermal stability, wide liquidus range, and tunable solubility. Moreover specific functions can be built into their respective ions. The first part of the dissertation involves discussions of chiral ionic liquids with additional protic, magnetic, and magneto-luminescent properties, respectively. In addition to their enantioselective sensing capabilities, the ILs may find use in chiral separations and catalysis. The second part of the dissertation involves discussions of fluorescent …
Therapeutic Effects Of N-Acetylcysteine Amide In The Treatment Of Eye Disorders, Joshua W. Carey
Therapeutic Effects Of N-Acetylcysteine Amide In The Treatment Of Eye Disorders, Joshua W. Carey
Doctoral Dissertations
"The loss of vision from age-related eye diseases now affects over 30 million people in the United States and is expected to reach twice that number within the next couple of decades. Among these disorders, age-related macular degeneration and cataract formation represent the largest percentage of these cases. Therapeutic options available for treating age-related macular degeneration are limited and there is no noninvasive form of treatment for cataracts current available. Several studies have indicated that oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathology of these age-related eye disorders. If oxidative stress is responsible for the initiation and progression of …

We explored the role of light-saturated (carbon-limited) photosynthesis on δ¹³C of turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum Banks ex Konig) populations from the clear, blue waters of the Great Bahama Bank and the turbid, green waters of Florida Bay using field observations and radiative transfer models. Consistent with numerous previous observations, leaf δ¹³C decreased significantly with water depth in both regions. However the δ¹³C for Bahamas turtlegrass was 3 parts per thousand heavier than that for Florida Bay turtlegrass at equivalent depths, and broadband irradiance explained even less of the δ¹³C variations than depth. Instead, leaf δ¹³C showed a stronger relationship to …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The potential of a recently established marine protected area (MPA) in the Western Atlantic, Brazil, as a 'seed production' and nursery ground for Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, an intensively exploited penaeid shrimp, was investigated in an attempt to reveal any future benefit of this new MPA to adjacent populations experiencing heavy exploitation. Overall, we observed that males and females >12 and 20 mm carapace length, respectively, contributed the most to reproduction in the studied population. Reproductive activity of X. kroyeri was continuous at the MPA; 2 annual reproductive peaks were recorded from March to April and from November to December, which were …

Kinetic Studies On Lactonization Of Quinone Propionic Acid Derivatives For The Development Of Redox Responsive Liposomes, K. L. Iresha Sampathi Perera
LSU Master's Theses
ABSTRACT Stimuli-responsive liposome systems that utilize endogenous triggers of tumor microenvironment have generated great attention in recent drug delivery research. Among such formulations, redox-responsive liposomes seem highly promising for cancer treatment due to their potential to release high drug concentrations upon reduction (by reductase enzymes). The research described in this thesis involved the evaluation of kinetics of trimethyl-lock quinone propionic acid reduction and lactonization, which accounts for payload release from trimethyl-lock quinone propionic acid-decorated liposomes. To achieve the ultimate goal of this research, several trimethyl-lock quinone propionic acid-based amide compounds were synthesized and characterized. Kinetic studies were carried out with …

Three-Dimensional Numerical Simulation Of Crystal And Crucible Rotations During Czochralski Growth Of Ge_Xsi_{1-X} Single Crystals, Serkan Abbasoğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The influence of crystal and crucible rotations on the flow field and the radial segregation of silicon are predicted during the growth of Ge_xSi_{1-x} crystals by the Czochralski method under microgravity conditions. Time-dependent 3-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out to present the influence of several rotation rates on the radial segregation and flow fields during the growth of Ge_xSi_{1-x}. Thermal and solutal Marangoni convection are also considered during this study. Different crystal rotation rates varying between 0 and 30 rpm and stationary or -2 rpm crucible rotation rates are considered. The results show that the crystal and crucible rotation rates …

Product Of Graded Submodules, Ameer Jaber
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
Let \Delta be an abelian group. By considering the notion multiplication of \Delta-graded modules (see [7]) over a commutative \Delta-graded ring with unity, we introduce the notion of product of two \Delta-graded submodules which we use to characterize the \Delta-graded prime submodules of a multiplication \Delta-graded module. Finally we proved a graded version of Nakayama lemma for multiplication \Delta-graded modules.

The Character Variety Of A Class Of Rational Links, Khaled Qazaqzeh
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
Let G_n be the fundamental group of the exterior of the rational link C(2n) in Conway's normal form, see [7]. A presentation for G_n is given by \langle a, b (ab)^n = (ba)^n\rangle [3, Thm. 2.2]. We study the character variety in SL(2, C) of the group G_n. In particular, we give the defining polynomial of the character variety of G_n. As an application, we show a well-known result that G_n and G_m are isomorphic only when n = m. Also as a consequence of the main theorem of this paper, we give a basis of the Kauffman bracket skein …

Let G be a finite group and F a formation of finite groups. A subgroup H of G is called F_s-supplemented in G if there exists a subnormal subgroup T of G such that G = HT and (H \cap T)H_G/H_G is contained in the F-hypercenter Z^F_{\infty}(G/H_G) of G/H_G. In this paper, we study the structure of finite groups by using F_s-supplemented subgroups.
