Variability In X-Ray Line Ratios In Helium-Like Ions Of Massive Stars: The Radiation-Driven Case., K. T. Hole, R. Ignace
Richard Ignace
Line ratios in "fir" triplets of helium-like ions have proven to be a powerful diagnostic of conditions in X-ray emitting gas surrounding massive stars. Recent observations indicate that these ratios can be variable with time. The possible causes of variation in line ratios are limited: changes in the radiation field or changes in density, and changes in mass-loss or geometry. In this paper, we investigate the ability of changes in the radiation field to induce variability in the ratio R=f/i. To isolate the radiative effect, we use a heuristic model of temperature and radius changes in variable stars in the …

Characterization And Properties Of $(R,S_\Sigma)$-Commutative Matrices, William F. Trench

Let $R=P \diag(\gamma_{0}I_{m_{0}}, \gamma_{1}I_{m_{1}}, \dots, \gamma_{k-1}I_{m_{k-1}})P^{-1}\in\mathbb{C}^{m\times m}$ and $S_{\sigma}=Q\diag(\gamma_{\sigma(0)}I_{n_{0}},\gamma_{\sigma(1)}I_{n_{1}}, \dots,\gamma_{\sigma(k-1)}I_{n_{k-1}})Q^{-1}\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}$, where $m_{0}+m_{1}+\cdots +m_{k-1}=m$, $n_{0}+n_{1}+\cdots+n_{k-1}=n$, $\gamma_{0}$, $\gamma_{1}$, \dots, $\gamma_{k-1}$ are distinct complex numbers, and $\sigma :\mathbb{Z}_{k}\to\mathbb{Z}_{k}= \{0,1, \dots, k-1\}$. We say that $A\in\mathbb{C}^{m\times n}$ is $(R,S_{\sigma})$-commutative if $RA=AS_{\sigma}$. We characterize the class of $(R,S_{\sigma})$-commutative matrrices and extend results obtained previously for the case where $\gamma_{\ell}=e^{2\pi i\ell/k}$ and $\sigma(\ell)=\alpha\ell+\mu \pmod{k}$, $0 \le \ell \le k-1$, with $\alpha$, $\mu\in\mathbb{Z}_{k}$. Our results are independent of $\gamma_{0}$, $\gamma_{1}$, \dots, $\gamma_{k-1}$, so long as they are distinct; i.e., if $RA=AS_{\sigma}$ for some choice of $\gamma_{0}$, $\gamma_{1}$, \dots, $\gamma_{_{k-1}}$ (all distinct), then $RA=AS_{\sigma}$ for arbitrary of …

An Analytical Model For Complete Solute Trapping During Rapid Solidification Of Binary Alloys, Sergey Sobolev
Sergey Sobolev
An analytical model has been developed to describe solute partitioning during rapid solidification of binary alloys under local nonequilibrium conditions. The model takes into account the deviations from equilibrium both at the solid–liquid interface according to the kinetic approach of Jackson et al. based on Monte Carlo simulations and in the bulk liquid using local nonequilibrium diffusion model (LNDM). The dimensionless growth parameter b found in the Monte Carlo simulations as the important parameter for solute trapping has been modified for the local nonequilibrium diffusion case. An analytical expression has been developed for the velocity-dependent partition coefficient K which predicts …

Some of the universities in Malaysia are still implementing hybrid Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) approach in managing Theses and Dissertations (TD). One of the limitations of the hybrid ETD approach is its online cataloguing method, which is only available at the physical location of the TD instead of enabling the information to be retrieved online. Maintaining the performance and the data accessing rate of an ETD system has become challenging, due in part to the high number of scholars who utilise and access the system. In order to allow remote access and maintain the services such as scalability, accessibility, …

Enhancement In The Photocatalytic Activity Of Au@Tio2 Nanocomposites By Pretreatment Of Tio2 With Uv Light, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, M. H. Cho Dr
Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan
A novel, efficient and controlled protocol for the synthesis and enhanced photocatalytic activity of Au@TiO2 nanocomposite is developed. TiO2 (P25) was pretreated by employing UV light (λ = 254 nm) and the pretreated TiO2 was uniformly decorated by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in presence of sodium citrate and UV light. UV pretreatment makes the TiO2 activated, as electrons were accumulated within the TiO2 in the conduction band. These accumulated electrons facilitate the formation of AuNPs which were of very small size (2-5 nm), similar morphology and uniformly deposited at TiO2 surface. It leads to formation of stable and crystalline Au@TiO2 nanocomposites. …

When a linear model is chosen by searching for the best subset among a set of candidate predictors, a fixed penalty such as that imposed by the Akaike information criterion may penalize model complexity inadequately, leading to biased model selection. We study resampling-based information criteria that aim to overcome this problem through improved estimation of the effective model dimension. The first proposed approach builds upon previous work on bootstrap-based model selection. We then propose a more novel approach based on cross-validation. Simulations and analyses of a functional neuroimaging data set illustrate the strong performance of our resampling-based methods, which are …

Estimation Of Copula Models With Discrete Margins Via Bayesian Data Augmentation, Michael S. Smith, Mohamad A. Khaled
Estimation Of Copula Models With Discrete Margins Via Bayesian Data Augmentation, Michael S. Smith, Mohamad A. Khaled
Michael Stanley Smith
Estimation of copula models with discrete margins is known to be difficult beyond the bivariate case. We show how this can be achieved by augmenting the likelihood with latent variables, and computing inference using the resulting augmented posterior. To evaluate this we propose two efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling schemes. One generates the latent variables as a block using a Metropolis-Hasting step with a proposal that is close to its target distribution, the other generates them one at a time. Our method applies to all parametric copulas where the conditional copula functions can be evaluated, not just elliptical copulas …
