Reverse Drag Revisited: Why Footwall Deformation May Be The Key To Inferring Listric Fault Geometry, Phillip G. Resor, David D. Pollard
Reverse Drag Revisited: Why Footwall Deformation May Be The Key To Inferring Listric Fault Geometry, Phillip G. Resor, David D. Pollard
Phillip G Resor
Although reverse drag, the down warping of hanging wall strata toward a normal fault, is widely accepted as an indicator of listric fault geometry, previous studies have shown that similar folding may form in response to slip on faults of finite vertical extent with listric or planar geometry. In this study we therefore seek more general criteria for inferring subsurface fault geometry from observations of near-surface deformation by directly comparing patterns of displacement, stress, and strain around planar and listric faults, as predicted by elastic boundary element models. In agreement with previous work, we find that models with finite planar, …

Smartphones are becoming a vehicle to provide an efficient and convenient way toaccess, find and share information; however, the availability of this information hascaused an increase in cyber attacks. Currently, cyber threats range from Trojans andviruses to botnets and toolkits. Presently, 96% of smartphones do not have pre-installedsecurity software. This lack in security is an opportunity for malicious cyber attackers to hackinto the various devices that are popular (i.e. Android, iPhone and Blackberry). Traditionalsecurity software found in personal computers (PCs), such as firewalls, antivirus, andencryption, is not currently available in smartphones. Moreover, smartphones are even morevulnerable than personal computers because …

The largest source of carbon dioxide emissions globally is the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in power plants, automobiles, industrial facilities and other sources. Generating electricity is the single largest source of carbon dioxide emissions, representing 41% of all emissions. Since 2007 the United States has been more actively considering nuclear power as an option for developing energy. Three decades after the Three Mile Island accident seemed to doom the nuclear power industry, the idea of a nuclear renaissance has been gaining public acceptance as a way to generate energy without greenhouse gas emissions and meet …

Modeling Dependence Using Skew T Copulas: Bayesian Inference And Applications, Michael S. Smith, Quan Gan, Robert Kohn
Modeling Dependence Using Skew T Copulas: Bayesian Inference And Applications, Michael S. Smith, Quan Gan, Robert Kohn
Michael Stanley Smith
[THIS IS AN AUGUST 2010 REVISION THAT REPLACES ALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS.]
We construct a copula from the skew t distribution of Sahu, Dey & Branco (2003). This copula can capture asymmetric and extreme dependence between variables, and is one of the few copulas that can do so and still be used in high dimensions effectively. However, it is difficult to estimate the copula model by maximum likelihood when the multivariate dimension is high, or when some or all of the marginal distributions are discrete-valued, or when the parameters in the marginal distributions and copula are estimated jointly. We therefore propose …

Ch 21. 'Future Perspectives On Solar Fuels', Thomas A. Faunce
Thomas A Faunce
This chapter opens by examining whether the research and development of molecular solar fuels will be characterized in future by its promotion of fundamental societal virtues such as equality and environmental sustainability. As a thought experiment, it presents a vision of some important elements of such a future world—one where energy is primarily not only a matter of global artificial photosynthesis (GAP), but of such virtues. Central to the future perspective presented here is nanotechnological construction with enhanced efficiency of each aspect of the natural photosynthetic process into units capable of inexpensive mass production for domestic use. This involves a …
Governing Planetary Nanomedicine: Environmental Sustainability And A Unesco Universal Declaration On The Bioethics And Human Rights Of Natural And Artificial Photosynthesis (Global Solar Fuels And Foods)., Thomas A. Faunce
Thomas A Faunce
Environmental and public health-focused sciences are increasingly characterised as constituting an emerging discipline—planetary medicine. From a governance perspective, the ethical components of that discipline may usefully be viewed as bestowing upon our ailing natural environment the symbolic moral status of a patient. Such components emphasise, for example, the origins and content of professional and social virtues and related ethical principles needed to promote global governance systems and policies that reduce ecological stresses and pathologies derived from human overpopulation, selfishness and greed— such as pollution, loss of biodiversity, deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as provide necessary energy, water and …

The Proposed Ban On Certain Nanomaterials For Electrical And Electronic Equipment In Europe: Global Security Implications, Thomas A. Faunce, Hitoshi Nasu

International collaboration on nanotechnology governance has so far paid little attention to security implications of regulating the use of nanotechnology. For example, the Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations (initiated by the International Centre for Technological Assessment) developed 'Principles for the Oversight of Nanotechnologies and Nanomaterials' to provide a set of ethical standards for nanotechnology research and development (Kimbrell, 2009). Similar initiatives are observed at the national level, as has been seen in the Swiss Retailers Association Code of Conduct and the UK's Responsible NanoCode (Bowman and Hodge, 2009, pp.149-152). The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has also been active …

Scholars make use of research output in the form of conference proceedings, journal and theses as references as guideline in generating new knowledge for the use of future generations. Support in the early stage of study is crucial for novice researchers as it will give them some insights of where to seek for extra information on relevant literature, institutions, people and research trend without having to go through tedious process of identifying this information all by themselves. The result of the implementation of SSNR shows significant information that can be utilized by novice researchers in accelerating research process. Thus, this …

Wind Energy Economics: Potential Economic Development In West Michigan, Paul Isely Ph.D., Yue Fan, Erik Edward Nordman Ph.D..
Erik Edward Nordman
Economic analyses conducted by the West Michigan Wind Assessment indicate that wind energy development could generate economic benefits and new employment in West Michigan; however, much of the economic activity occurs during construction and the local benefits depend on how many turbine parts are manufactured locally. As the wind industry grows in Michigan, a higher portion of the spending to construct new wind facilities could remain in the state.

West Michigan Wind Assessment Issue Brief #6 The economic costs of wind energy development were estimated in compared to costs of coal and natural gas. Excluding subsidies, but including external costs, we found that wind has a lower total cost ($/MWh) than coal, but slightly higher than natural gas.

The paper presents an assessment of changes in air emissions and impacts on air quality resulting from the modernization of flue gas cleaning and evacuation in two Polish coal-fired power plants. These modernizations were associated with the construction of flue gas desulphurisation systems and use for discharging desulphurized gases separate stacks with a height of 120 m. On the basis of analyzes and atmospheric dispersion modeling, it was found that the changes in the effective height of emitters (the apparent point of emission), due to additional reducing of flue gas volume in existing chimneys, caused that important ecological effects of …

An Optimal Real-Time Voltage And Frequency Scaling For Uniform Multiprocessors, Gabriel A. Moreno, Dionisio De Niz
An Optimal Real-Time Voltage And Frequency Scaling For Uniform Multiprocessors, Gabriel A. Moreno, Dionisio De Niz
Gabriel A. Moreno
Power consumption is an increasing concern in real-time systems that operate on battery power or require heat dissipation to keep the system at its operating temperature. Today, most processors allow software to change their frequency and voltage of operation to reduce their power consumption. Frequency scaling in real-time systems must be done in a way that ensures that the tasks' deadlines are met. In this paper we present the Growing Minimum Frequency (GMF) algorithm for voltage and frequency scaling in uniform multiprocessors for real-time systems. This algorithm runs in polynomial time and computes the optimal voltage and frequency assignment, achieving …

Data are proliferating far faster than they can be captured, managed, or stored. What types of data are most likely to be used and reused, by whom, and for what purposes? Answers to these questions will inform information policy and the design of digital libraries.
We report findings from semi-structured interviews and field observations to investigate characteristics of data use and reuse and how those characteristics vary within and between scientific communities. The two communities studied are the researchers at the Center for Embedded Network Sensing (CENS) and users of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. We found that …

Information can be briefly defined as processed data. Information is crucial to the success of any organization because it must be exchanged in one form or the other before activities can be carried out. However, too much information can be overwhelming and lead to poor decision-making. Further, as organizations face an ever-growing wave of digital data, they need to analyze that data and make timely decisions to achieve effective management .Formerly, information was viewed simply as a means of expression, they now serve as the foundation for an organization’s effectiveness and efficiency. Additionally, increased pressures to manage information appropriately, communicate …
