In a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultra-wideband (UWB) system, coherent detection where the channel state information (CSI) is assumed to be exactly known at the receiver requires the transmission of a large number of symbols for channel estimation, thus reducing the bandwidth efficiency. This paper examines the use of unitary differential space-time frequency codes (DSTFCs) in MB-OFDM UWB, which increases the system bandwidth efficiency due to the fact that no CSI is required for differential detection. In this paper, the application of space time trellis codes to multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) systems is investigated. We propose a coding scheme that could fully exploit all the available channel diversity, including space diversity, frequency diversity and inter-subband diversity. Performance of the proposed system is compared with that of the conventional MB-OFDM UWB system in terms of frame error rate (FER). Simulation results show that this system outperforms the conventional one. Space-Time-Frequency Codes (STFCs), which haverecently been proposed in the literature for Multiband OFDMUltra-Wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) systems to improve thesystem capacity, error performance and wireless communicationrange, are all constructed based on orthogonal structures. Thispaper examines the application of Quasi-Orthogonal STFCs(QOSTFCs) to enhance further either data rate or error performancein the recently proposed STFC MB-OFDM UWB systems.It will be shown that QOSTFCs can provide significantly bettererror performance, compared to the conventional MB-OFDMUWB (without STFCs) as well as to the Orthogonal STFCs(OSTFCs) of the same order, at the same data rate, withoutincreasing the total transmission power. This paper introduces the notion of location-based intelligence by tracking the spatial properties and behavior of a single civilian participant over a two-week study period using a global positioning system (GPS) receiver, and displaying them on a geographic information system (GIS). The paper clearly shows the power of combining speed (S), distance (D), time (T) and elevation (E) data with the exact longitude and latitude position of the user. The issues drawn from the observation and the civilian’s personal diary are useful in understanding the social implications of tracking and monitoring objects and subjects using GPS. This paper explores the adoption of emerging technologies for the purposes of national security. The three technologies chosen were ePassports, E911 and mobile alerts. The study uses a content analysis methodology drawing on popular media documentation to extract the major social and technological impacts of the technologies on citizens as they were reported. The find i ngs of the study indicate that reactions to the three technologies differed. ePassports were considered vastly different to E911 and mobile alerting predominantly because they were seen to be a controlling technology, whereas E911 and mobile alerting were viewed to be about safety and …

This paper describes how location-based services (LBS) was introduced into the information technology curriculum at the University of Wollongong in 2004. The inquiry is based on two academic reflections on practice. The results indicate that students found the course experience both intellectually challenging and rewarding. Academics linked to the project found the topic aligned well to their research interests and stimulated new ideas for grant applications. And industry representatives found the experience advantageous, a vehicle for collaboration, and subsequently a way to give something back to their local community. This paper studies the selection environment of auto-ID and defines, describes and gives examples of three main patterns of innovation: migration, integration, and convergence. Although habitat selection is relatively well studied in some elasmobranchs, no field or lab studies have focused on sediment preference, which is important to other benthic marine vertebrates. To determine the relative abundance and sediment preference of shallow water benthic elasmobranch inhabitants of North Inlet, SC, we employed 187 30 minute tangle net sets over two sediment types (mud and sand). The majority of our capture consisted of 41 Dasyatis sayi (tagged 37) and 31 Sphyrna tiburo (tagged 14). Although D. sayi had been recorded in North Inlet, previous studies found greater numbers of congeners D. americana and D. sabina. …

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved amino acids (TDAA) were measured in high (Chukchi Sea) and low (Beaufort Sea) productivity regions of the western Arctic Ocean to investigate the composition and bioavailability of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Concentrations and DOC-normalized yields of TDAA in Chukchi surface waters were relatively high, indicating an accumulation of bioavailable DOM. High concentrations and yields of TDAA were also observed in the upper halocline of slope and basin waters, indicating off-shelf transport of bioavailable DOM from the Chukchi Sea. In contrast, concentrations and yields of TDAA in Beaufort surface waters were relatively low, indicting …

There are four prominent product graphs in graph theory: Cartesian, strong, direct, and lexicographic. Of these four product graphs, the lexicographic product graph is the least studied. Lexicographic products are not commutative but still have some interesting properties. This paper begins with basic definitions of graph theory, including the definition of a graph, that are needed to understand theorems and proofs that come later. This study investigated the effectiveness of commonly used instructional methods for teaching the phases of the Moon to fifth and sixth grade students. The instructional methods investigated were the use of diagrams, animations, and models. The effectiveness of each method was tested by measuring students' understanding of Moon phases with a pre and post-assessment after receiving instruction with a specific method or combination of methods. These methods were then evaluated for their ability to help students learn essential concepts, reinforce relevant vocabulary and discourage misconceptions. Results showed that students had better scores with less prevalence of misconception when they were …

In this paper we present a sensitivity analysis for drawing inferences about parameters that are not estimable from observed data without additional assumptions. We present the methodology using two different examples: a causal parameter that is not identifiable due to violations of the randomization assumption, and a parameter that is not estimable in the nonparametric model due to measurement error. Existing methods for tackling these problems assume a parametric model for the type of violation to the identifiability assumption, and require the development of new estimators and inference for every new model. In binary classification problems, the area under the ROC curve (AUC), is an effective means of measuring the performance of your model. Most often, cross-validation is also used, in order to assess how the results will generalize to an independent data set. In order to evaluate the quality of an estimate for cross-validated AUC, we must obtain an estimate for its variance. For massive data sets, the process of generating a single performance estimate can be computationally expensive.
