Magmatic Processes At The Volcanic Front Of Central Mexican Volcanic Belt: Sierra De Chichinautzin Volcanic Field (Mexico), Fernando Velasco-Tapia, Surendra Pal Verma Jan 2013

Magmatic Processes At The Volcanic Front Of Central Mexican Volcanic Belt: Sierra De Chichinautzin Volcanic Field (Mexico), Fernando Velasco-Tapia, Surendra Pal Verma

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Sierra de Chichinautzin (SCN) volcanic field is considered one of the key areas to understand the complex petrogenetic processes at the volcanic front of the Mexican Volcanic Belt (MVB). New as well as published major- and trace-element and Sr and Nd isotopic data are used to constrain the magma generation and evolution processes in the SCN. From inverse and direct modelling, combined ^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr and ^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd data, and use of multi-dimensional log-ratio discriminant function based diagrams and other geological and geophysical considerations, we infer that mafic magmas from the SCN were generated by partial melting of continental lithospheric mantle in …

Prediction Of Weathering Development In Metarhyolites Of The Ilgın (Konya) Area, Sw Turkey, Erkan Bozkurtoğlu, Şenel Özdamar, Hati̇ce Ünal Ercan Jan 2013

Prediction Of Weathering Development In Metarhyolites Of The Ilgın (Konya) Area, Sw Turkey, Erkan Bozkurtoğlu, Şenel Özdamar, Hati̇ce Ünal Ercan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Fresh to weathered metarhyolites crop out in the Ilgın (Konya) area of the Afyon-Bolkardağ Zone. Determination of the development of weathering was studied by physical (i.e. specific gravity, dry unit weight, saturated unit weight, porosity, void ratio, and degree of saturation by weight) and mechanical (i.e. point load) properties and the \"point rock change value\" (RCV_p) and \"point rock change ratio\" (RCR_p) values of the metarhyolite rock samples. The samples were classified in 3 groups (i.e. A, B, and C) representing degree of weathering from weathered to fresh rocks based on their RCV_p and RCR_p values. The K_2O values are …

The Effects Of Linear Coarse-Grained Slope Channel Bodies On The Orientations Of Fold Developments: A Case Study From The Middle Eocene-Lower Oligocene Kırkgeçit Formation, Elazığ, Eastern Turkey, Hasan Çeli̇k Jan 2013

The Effects Of Linear Coarse-Grained Slope Channel Bodies On The Orientations Of Fold Developments: A Case Study From The Middle Eocene-Lower Oligocene Kırkgeçit Formation, Elazığ, Eastern Turkey, Hasan Çeli̇k

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

A significant magnitude of tectonic feature deflection away from the principal stress direction was investigated. This was caused by oblique spatial orientation of coarse-grained sediment bodies, principally large conglomerate and sand-filled deep-water slope channels, in an otherwise mud-rich sedimentary section. After detailed mapping and field work to find the cause of this localised fold axis deflection, superbly exposed conglomerate and sand filled deep-water slope channel bodies were found both in and/or next to the core of the folds with the same spatial orientation as the folds. It was concluded that the channel bodies are effectively dictating the orientations of the …

Stress Features In Terra Rossa Soil Under Traditional Olive Cultivation: A Micromorphological And Mineralogical Characterization, Salvatore Madrau, Claudio Zucca, İhsan Akşi̇t, Valeria Fiori

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This study analyzes the micromorphological and mineralogical properties of a Terra Rossa soil under a traditional Mediterranean olive grove. It highlights the microscopic and sub-microscopic features generated by the permanent crop cover. The study area, where the land use has remained unchanged for the last 150 years, is near Sassari (Sardinia, Italy) and is characterized by dominant Terra Rossa developed on Miocene marine limestone. Two soil profiles were opened and described in July 2009, 1 under the canopy of an olive tree and 1 between the trees. Chemical and physical analyses were carried out. Undisturbed aggregates were collected from all …

Clay Mineralogy Of Red Clay Deposits From The Central Carpathian Basin (Hungary): Implications For Plio-Pleistocene Chemical Weathering And Palaeoclimate, János Kovács, Béla Raucsik, Andrea Varga, Gabor Ujvari, György Varga, Franz Ottner Jan 2013

Clay Mineralogy Of Red Clay Deposits From The Central Carpathian Basin (Hungary): Implications For Plio-Pleistocene Chemical Weathering And Palaeoclimate, János Kovács, Béla Raucsik, Andrea Varga, Gabor Ujvari, György Varga, Franz Ottner

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Geochemical and mineralogical studies of palaeosols provide essential information for palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental interpretation of continental deposits and can present a proxy for palaeoclimate. Red clays in the central Carpathian Basin (Hungary) (Tengelic Red Clay Formation; Kerecsend Red Clay Formation), overlain by loess-palaeosol sequences, were studied. Results from geochemical climofunctions applied to Upper Pliocene–Lower Pleistocene red clays and palaeosols located in the Carpathian Basin, and clay mineralogy, indicate that the palaeoclimate was considerably more humid and warmer during the Late Pliocene-Early Pleistocene in comparison to modern values.

Multi-Proxy Evidences Of Mid-Pleistocene Dry Climates Observed On Calcretes In Central Turkey, Ceren Küçükuysal, Asuman Günal Türkmenoğlu, Seli̇m Kapur

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Palaeosols are very important in reconstructing palaeoclimate studies, since they are accepted as useful climate markers and as potential providers of proxy data. The study of the palaeosols of the Plio-Pleistocene rock sequences around Ankara revealed evidence for a reconstruction of the Quaternary palaeoclimate of the region. The study area is located in Bala, south-east of Ankara, which contains Middle Pleistocene red palaeosols with powdery to nodular calcrete developments, alternating with channel deposits. During this warm and arid period in the Pleistocene, the limited water available in the soil led to the accumulation of low magnesian carbonates, forming calcretes. The …

The Upper Cretaceous Calciclastic Submarine Fan Deposits In The Eastern Pontides, Ne Turkey: Facies Architecture And Controlling Factors, Di̇lek Sofracioğlu, Rai̇f Kandemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Tonya Formation, which represents the uppermost part of the Mesozoic sequence in the Eastern Pontides, consists of calciturbidites in Trabzon and its surrounding region. Two stratigraphic sections of the unit were measured in the Hacımehmet and Gürbulak areas to decipher the distribution of rock types, facies architecture, sediment textures and depositional environment. The grain size, channels, suprafan lobes and slump structures of the sediments suggest that calciclastic sequences were deposited in a submarine fan system. Calcarenites/calcirudites and hemipelagic rocks, comprising an alternation of marls and mudstones, are the two dominant lithologies described in the studied calciclastic submarine fan system. …

Three-Dimensional Subsurface Modeling Of Mineralization: A Case Study From The Handeresi (Çanakkale, Nw Turkey) Pb-Zn-Cu Deposit, Si̇nan Akiska, İbrahi̇m Sönmez Sayili, Gökhan Demi̇rela Jan 2013

Three-Dimensional Subsurface Modeling Of Mineralization: A Case Study From The Handeresi (Çanakkale, Nw Turkey) Pb-Zn-Cu Deposit, Si̇nan Akiska, İbrahi̇m Sönmez Sayili, Gökhan Demi̇rela

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The main goal of 3D modeling studies in the mining sector is to address the complex geological, mineralogical, and structural factors in subsurface environments and detect the ore zone(s). In order to solve this complexity, use of quality data (e.g., a wide range of boreholes at regular intervals) is necessary. However, this situation is not always possible because of certain restrictions such as intensive vegetation, high slope areas, and some economic constraints. At the same time, with the development of computer technology, the unused and/or insufficiently considered data need to be gathered and reviewed. This assessment may lead to the …

A Method Based On The Van Der Hoven Spectrum For Performance Evaluation In Prediction Of Wind Speed, Eli̇f Kaya, Burak Barutçu, Şükran Si̇bel Menteş

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Development of techniques for accurate assessment of wind power potential at a site is very important for the planning and establishment of a wind energy system. The most important defining character of the wind and the problems related with it lie in its unpredictable variation. Van der Hoven constructed a wind speed spectrum using short-term and long-term records of wind in Brookhaven, NY, USA, in 1957 and showed the diurnal and turbulent effects. His spectrum suggests that there is a substantial amount of wind energy in 1-min periodic variations. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the results of …

Middle-Upper Miocene Paleogeography Of Southern Turkey: Insights From Stratigraphy And Calcareous Nannofossil Biochronology Of The Olukpınar And Başyayla Sections (Mut-Ermenek Basin), Paola Cipollari, Eva Halásová, Kemal Gürbüz, Domenico Cosentino

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The age of the marine succession capping the basement rocks of the central Taurides in the Mut-Ermenek Basin is constrained using calcareous nannofossil biochronology. The Olukpınar section, which correlates with the biozones between MNN5a and MNN6b (late Langhian-late Serravallian), represents a deeper marine environment developed lateral to the Ermenek platform. The long-term transgressive-regressive cycle of the Olukpınar section, which corresponds to the middle-upper part of the TB2 supercycle, can be subdivided into 2 large-scale (10^6 years) cycles (TB2.4 and TB2.5) based on the occurrence of 2 major debris flow deposits linked to sea-level drop. The younger late Tortonian Başyayla section …

Numerical Solutions To The Gross-Pitaevskii Equation For Bose-Einstein Condensates, Luigi Galati

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we compare various potential operators for the two-dimensional (2D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) for Bose-Einstein condensates. Both the 2D and the 1D models are scaled to get a three parameter model. Smoothness of initial conditions is considered and choice of method (Split-Step Fourier method with Strang Splitting) is justied. Numerical simulations provide graphical evidence of properties of both focusing and nonfocusing cases.

Sol-Gel Characteristics For Corrosion Resistance Of Anodised Aluminium, Michael Whelan, John Cassidy, Brendan Duffy Jan 2013

Sol-Gel Characteristics For Corrosion Resistance Of Anodised Aluminium, Michael Whelan, John Cassidy, Brendan Duffy

Articles

Conventional anodising electrolytes based on sulphuric acid, oxalic acid and phosphoric acid have been used to form nanoporous layers on AA3003-H14 and sealed with silane based sol-gel sealers. It is shown that the sol-gel chemistries have varying levels of pore penetration depending on the synthesis conditions. The extent of sol-gel penetration and pore sealing is analysed by electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. To describe the sealing phenomena observed a sol-gel penetration and sealing rating has been proposed to explain the interactions of the sol-gels with the pores of the anodised layers. The corrosion resistance of the sol-gel sealed …

Genome-Wide Associations Of Signaling Pathways In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Serdar Bozdag, Stefan Wuchty, Alexei Vazquez, Peter O. Bauer

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Background: eQTL analysis is a powerful method that allows the identification of causal genomic alterations, providing an explanation of expression changes of single genes. However, genes mediate their biological roles in groups rather than in isolation, prompting us to extend the concept of eQTLs to whole gene pathways. Methods: We combined matched genomic alteration and gene expression data of glioblastoma patients and determined associations between the expression of signaling pathways and genomic copy number alterations with a non-linear machine learning approach. Results: Expectedly, over-expressed pathways were largely associated to tag-loci on chromosomes with signature alterations. Surprisingly, tag-loci that were associated …

It is shown that the main theorem of Arslan’s paper (Theorem 2, 2011), as stated, is incorrect. Under additional conditions, we present a short proof of the corrected version of the theorem. We also give a proof of a theorem of Rao and Shanbhag (1991), employed by Arslan, without the use of the Kolmogorov Consistency Theorem.

We reviewed photographic images of fishes from depths of 381–2282m in Marguerite Bay and 405–2007m in the Amundsen Sea. Marguerite Bay fishes were 33% notothenioids and 67% non-notothenioids. Channichthyids (47%) and nototheniids (44%) were the most abundant notothenioids. The deep-living channichthyid Chionobathyscus dewitti (74%) and the nototheniid genus Trematomus (66%) were the most abundant taxa within these two families. The most abundant non-notothenioids were the macrourid Macrourus whitsoni (72%) and zoarcids (18%). Amundsen Sea fishes were 87% notothenioids and 13% non-notothenioids, the latter exclusively Macrourus whitsoni. Bathydraconids (38%) and artedidraconids (30%) were the most abundant notothenioids. We observed that Macrourus …

Relative Roles Of Circumnavigating Waves And Extratropics On The Mjo And Its Relationship With The Mean State, Pallav Ray, Tim Li Jan 2013

Relative Roles Of Circumnavigating Waves And Extratropics On The Mjo And Its Relationship With The Mean State, Pallav Ray, Tim Li

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Aset of atmospheric general circulation model (GCM) experiments is designed to explore the relative roles of the circumnavigating waves and the extratropics on the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO). In a ‘‘control’’ simulation, the model is forced by the climatological monthly sea surface temperature for 20 yr. In the first sensitivity experiment, model prognostic variables are relaxed in the tropical Atlantic region (208S–208N, 808W–08) toward the ‘‘controlled’’ climatological annual cycle to suppress the influences from the circumnavigating waves. In the second sensitivity experiment, model prognostic variables are relaxed in the 208–308 latitude zones toward the controlled climatological annual cycle to suppress the …

A Proposal For A Problem-Driven Mathematics Curriculum Framework, Judith S. Zawojewski, Marta Magiera, Richard Lesh Jan 2013

A Proposal For A Problem-Driven Mathematics Curriculum Framework, Judith S. Zawojewski, Marta Magiera, Richard Lesh

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

A framework for a problem-driven mathematics curriculum is proposed, grounded in the assumption that students learn mathematics while engaged in complex problem-solving activity. The framework is envisioned as a dynamic technologicallydriven multi-dimensional representation that can highlight the nature of the curriculum (e.g., revealing the relationship among modeling, conceptual, and procedural knowledge), can be used for programmatic, classroom and individual assessment, and can be easily revised to reflect ongoing changes in disciplinary knowledge development and important applications of mathematics. The discussion prompts ideas and questions for future development of the envisioned software needed to enact such a framework.

Considerations In Designing Human-Computer Interfaces For Elderly People, Drew Williams, Mohammad Arif Ul Alam, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, William Chu

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

As computing devices continue to become more heavily integrated into our lives, proper design of human-computer interfaces becomes a more important topic of discussion. Efficient and useful human-computer interfaces need to take into account the abilities of the humans who will be using such interfaces, and adapt to difficulties that different users may face – such as the difficulties that elderly users must deal with. Interfaces that allow for user-specific customization, while taking into account the multiple difficulties that older users might face, can assist the elderly in properly using these newer computing devices, and in doing so possibly achieving …

Ricean Over Gaussian Modelling In Magnitude Fmri Analysis—Added Complexity With Negligible Practical Benefits, Daniel W. Adrian, Ranjan Maitra, Daniel B. Rowe

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

It is well known that Gaussian modelling of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) magnitude time-course data, which are truly Rice distributed, constitutes an approximation, especially at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Based on this fact, previous work has argued that Rice-based activation tests show superior performance over their Gaussian-based counterparts at low SNRs and should be preferred in spite of the attendant additional computational and estimation burden. Here, we revisit these past studies and, after identifying and removing their underlying limiting assumptions and approximations, provide a more comprehensive comparison. Our experimental evaluations using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve methodology show that …

Concept Of Sub-Independence, Gholamhossein Hamedani Jan 2013

Concept Of Sub-Independence, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Limit theorems as well as other well-known results in probability and statistics are often based on the distributions of the sums of independent random variables. The concept of sub-independence, which is weaker than that of independence, is shown to be sufficient to yield the conclusions of these theorems and results. It also provides a measure of dissociation between two random variables which is stronger than uncorrelatedness.

Rssi Based Indoor Localization For Smartphone Using Fixed And Mobile Wireless Node, Md O. Gani, Casey O'Brien, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, Roger O. Smith

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Nowadays with the dispersion of wireless networks, smartphones and diverse related services, different localization techniques have been developed. Global Positioning System (GPS) has a high rate of accuracy for outdoor localization but the signal is not available inside of buildings. Also other existing methods for indoor localization have low accuracy. In addition, they use fixed infrastructure support. In this paper, we present a novel system for indoor localization, which also works well outside. We have developed a mathematical model for estimating location (distance and direction) of a mobile device using wireless technology. Our experimental results on Smartphones (Android and iOS) …

The Roles Of Humans And Climatic Variation On The Fire History Of Subalpine Meadows - Mount Rainer National Park (Washington), Michael Louis Lukens Jan 2013

The Roles Of Humans And Climatic Variation On The Fire History Of Subalpine Meadows - Mount Rainer National Park (Washington), Michael Louis Lukens

All Master's Theses

With the creation of Mount Rainier National Park (MORA) in 1899 came the active management of the park's landscapes and a heavy emphasis on fire suppression. Today managers at MORA have made returning fire to the park's landscapes a top priority. In order to achieve this goal, and to make more informed decisions in regard to the application of fire, land managers at MORA need to better understand past fire occurrences and the drivers of fire activity on the mountain. To address this problem, analysis of macroscopic charcoal preserved in lake sediments was used to reconstruct the fire history for …

Environmental Film Festivals: Beginning Explorations At The Intersections Of Film Festival Studies And Ecocritical Studies, Salma Monani

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Drawing from the burgeoning field of film festival studies and its engagement with public sphere theory, I examine environmental film festivals to suggest that their festival terrain is bounded by three end-member festival types, that of the official public sphere, the alternative public sphere, and the corporate or trade-show sphere. Few environmental festivals fall neatly into a single end-member category. Analyzing how they construct their identities suggests the complex ways in which these festivals work to negotiate their presence in a heterogeneous environmental and media landscape and makes room for continued attention to these unique sites of ecocinema engagement.
