Evaluating Drought In The United States Using The Emissivity Difference Vegetation Index, Hanisha Hirani Jan 2013

Evaluating Drought In The United States Using The Emissivity Difference Vegetation Index, Hanisha Hirani

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

As monitoring vegetation and crops becomes increasingly important due to climate change, there arises the need for a monitoring scheme that places more weight on water availability as an indication of vegetation health and vitality. The Emissivity Difference Vegetation Index (EDVI) is the first step towards that type of monitoring scheme. With the potential for diurnal studies, there are applications towards agriculture monitoring, wildfire monitoring, and much more. EDVI is a synergetic product retrieved from microwave, visible, and infrared satellite measurements, as well as reanalysis. Since microwave measurements are more sensitive to vegetation water content, EDVI has the potential to …

Flexible Variable And Model Selection With Ordinal Categorical Responses And Multiple Covariates, Wan-Hsiang Hsu Jan 2013

Flexible Variable And Model Selection With Ordinal Categorical Responses And Multiple Covariates, Wan-Hsiang Hsu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Ordered categorical responses are common in many applied studies; moreover, with the rapid growth of computational power and technologies, ultrahigh dimensional data becomes very widespread. For example, there could be ten thousands of dimensions in a gene expression data and of interest is to classify the disease stage with specific genes and predict a clinical prognosis by using these specific genes. However, there are some unique challenges, including (1) the curse of dimensionality and (2) the modeling strategy for allowing dynamic covariate effects. Thus, variable selection for mining ultrahigh dimensional data and flexible modeling strategy for allowing dynamic covariate effects …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Mayan management of deer populations at Mayapán in the Yucatán, México has been suggested by historical texts, iconography, and archaeological investigation. Therefore, the main research question of this thesis is: Was deer management or husbandry practiced at Mayapán? Two Cervidae species are identified in the Mayapán faunal assemblage, Odocoileus virginianus (white-tailed deer) and Mazama americana (brocket deer). It is likely that Mazama pandora (Yucatan brocket deer) is also present and possibly another Odocoileus subspecies. Consequently, the second research question of this thesis is: How many deer species or subspecies were present in Postclassic Period Mayapán? There is a considerable non-overlapping …

The Motion Of Mesoscale Snowbands In Northeast U.S. Winter Storms, Jaymes Kenyon Jan 2013

The Motion Of Mesoscale Snowbands In Northeast U.S. Winter Storms, Jaymes Kenyon

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The distribution of snowfall accumulation attending winter storms is a product of both precipitation intensity and duration. Many heavy snowfall events are associated with distinct mesoscale snowbands that strongly modulate snowfall accumulation. Mesoscale snowbands are known to be favored within environments characterized by frontogenesis in the presence of weak moist symmetric or gravitational stabilities. Although the development of mesoscale snowbands often can be anticipated at 24–36-h ranges, anticipating band residence time at a fixed location remains a forecasting challenge. However, given that snowband residence time is related to characteristics of band motion, improved understanding of band motion presents an opportunity …

Mueller Based Scatterometry And Optical Characterization Of Semiconductor Materials, Gangadhara Raja Muthinti Jan 2013

Mueller Based Scatterometry And Optical Characterization Of Semiconductor Materials, Gangadhara Raja Muthinti

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Scatterometry is one of the most useful metrology methods for the characterization and control of critical dimensions (CD) and the detailed topography of periodic structures found in microelectronics fabrication processes. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and normal incidence reflectometry (NI) based scatterometry are the most widely used optical methodologies for metrology of these structures. Evolution of better optical hardware and faster computing capabilities led to the development of Mueller Matrix (MM) based Scatterometry (MMS). Dimensional metrology using full Mueller Matrix (16 element) scatterometry in the wavelength range of 245nm-1000nm was discussed in this work. Unlike SE and NI, MM data provides complete …

From Whole-Cell To Compartment- And Class-Specific Analysis Of Rna Post-Transcriptional Modifications, Ryan Quinn Jan 2013

From Whole-Cell To Compartment- And Class-Specific Analysis Of Rna Post-Transcriptional Modifications, Ryan Quinn

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The genomic structure of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) has proven difficult to examine by traditional high-resolution techniques. Structural probing and in silico modeling have been turned to the task instead. Computer models are only as robust as the data used to create them. A number of techniques were explored in this investigation to expand the utility of in silico modeling as it relates to HIV-1: the study of nucleoside modifications, and the probing of in vivo conformations of the 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR) by cross-linking and affinity capture.

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

2,3-Benzodiazepin-4-one (BDZ-11) derivatives are a special group of 2,3-benzodiazepine compounds. These compounds have been previously synthesized as AMPA receptor inhibitors, and they are also potential drugs for the treatment of various neurological diseases involving excessive AMPA receptor activity. AMPA receptors are a subtype of glutamate ion channel proteins and are responsible for the majority of excitatory neurotransmission in the mammalian central nervous system. Specifically, they are critically involved in neuronal development and brain activities, including learning and memory. Overstimulation of AMPA receptors is associated with some neurological diseases such as ALS, stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Despite the fact that hundreds …

Lipschitz Estimates On Weakly Pseudoconvex Domains, Daniel Smitas Jan 2013

Lipschitz Estimates On Weakly Pseudoconvex Domains, Daniel Smitas

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Given an arbitrary pseudoconvex domain D in C^n, in general, one cannot construct an integral kernel using holomorphic support functions. Here we consider an integral kernel, defined for weakly pseudoconvex domains, that while not holomorphic, does display related properties. We examine the transform defined by this kernel, Tf, on the Holder spaces we inspect how tangential vector fields apply to Tf.

Multi-Electron Reduction Of Bowl-Shaped Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons : Structural Studies, Sarah N. Spisak Jan 2013

Molecular Biochemical Study Of The Cataract-Associated Mutants In Human Gammad-Crystallin, Cindy Yeung

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Cataract is a vision impairment disease that leads to light scattering and opacity of the eye lens. It is recognized as the most prevalent cause of blindness. Most cataracts occur due to aging, but those that occur in childhood or in young adults are typically of genetic origin. In the young (developing) eye, post–surgical complications such as glaucoma are common after cataract surgery. Hence there is a great need to develop non-surgical intervention strategies for the treatment of cataract. Here, two cataract-associated mutants of human γD-crystallin (HGD): i) Arg76 to Ser (R76S) and ii) a truncation mutation at Trp156 (W156X …

The Spectral Analysis Of Longitudinal Data With Applications To Atmospheric Variables, Amy Potrzeba Macrina Jan 2013

The Spectral Analysis Of Longitudinal Data With Applications To Atmospheric Variables, Amy Potrzeba Macrina

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Longitudinal data analysis is an observational study that analyzes data that has been collected over long periods of time where time can be arbitrary. It is a popular method that has been widely used over the time domain approach. An equivalent method to the time domain approach is the frequency domain approach. This method allows researchers to observe the spectral properties of the data. In the world everything exists in continuous time t, but we made observations of a given variable at some specific times. Currently spectral analysis is well developed for time series when observations are made at equal …

Compression Of Gps Trajectory Data : Benchmarking Framework And New Approach, Jonathan Muckell Jan 2013

Compression Of Gps Trajectory Data : Benchmarking Framework And New Approach, Jonathan Muckell

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

GPS-equipped mobile devices such as smart phones and in-car navigation units are collecting enormous amounts of spatial and temporal information that traces a moving object's path. The exponential increase in the amount of such trajectory data has caused three major problems. First, transmission of large amounts of data is expensive and time-consuming. Second, queries on large amounts of trajectory data require computationally expensive operations to extract useful patterns and information. Third, GPS trajectories often contain large amounts of redundant data that waste storage and cause increased disk I/O time. These issues can be addressed by algorithms that reduce the size …
