Metallic Mineral Mining In Maine, Kaitlyn Bernard Jan 2013

Metallic Mineral Mining In Maine, Kaitlyn Bernard

Honors Theses

In 2012 the Maine State Legislature passed a bill directing the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to rewrite the regulations governing metallic mineral mining in Maine. The bill was introduced after pressure from Maine’s largest private land owner and timber company, J.D. Irving, Limited. The company has a lucrative mineral deposit on one of their landholdings in northern Maine and is interested in pursuing a mining development project. The bill aimed to streamline the regulatory framework around mining operations and make the permitting process more conducive to mineral development throughout the state. The 2012 Maine Metallic Mineral Mining Act …

Massive Quiescent Disk Galaxies In The Candels Survey, Aurora Y. Kesseli Jan 2013

Massive Quiescent Disk Galaxies In The Candels Survey, Aurora Y. Kesseli

Honors Theses

We used data from the GOODS-S field of the CANDELS survey in order to confirm previous studies that found that large fractions of high-redshift galaxies (z ∼ 2) are disk-dominated (McGrath et al. 2008; van der Wel et al. 2011). In the GOODS-S field we selected out all the massive quiescent disk galaxies by imposing a mass limit of M > 1010M and a redshift range of 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 2.5, and then choosing the quiescent red galaxies from a color-color plot. Once we had our sample, we did a qualitative visual classification of each galaxy and …

Ultrafast Carrier Dynamics In Semiconductor Nanostructures, Jaroslaw Pulka Jan 2013

Ultrafast Carrier Dynamics In Semiconductor Nanostructures, Jaroslaw Pulka

Theses

Rapid development of telecommunication systems forces a switch to all- optical data processing and transmission. To design such systems it is critical to understand the ultrafast processes which occur in the components of such systems, especially in Monolithic Modelocked Lasers. The purpose of this work was to identify the main physical processes influencing carrier dynamics in semiconductor nanostructures which show promise for future telecommunication systems. This study was carried out by means of ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy, which allowed characterisation with a sub-picosecond resolution. The main part of the thesis concentrates on the analysis of the InAs/GaAs Quantum Dot (QD) system. …

The Essentials Of Economic Sustainability By John Ikerd [Book Review], Charles A. Francis Jan 2013

The Essentials Of Economic Sustainability By John Ikerd [Book Review], Charles A. Francis

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Essentials of Economic Sustainability is the latest challenging statement on innovative economic philosophy from an alternative opinion leader John Ikerd, retired agricultural economist from University of Missouri, Columbia (Columbia, Missouri, United States). His perspective is that accelerating changes surrounding us require more than small adaptations, but rather a thoughtful reconsideration of basic principles about how the world works and our role in this dynamic reality. Ikerd paraphrases the challenge of the 1988 Brundtland Report of the United Nations that we must design strategies ‘to meet the economic needs of the present without diminishing economic opportunities for the future’ (page 1). …

Thermobarometry Of Metamorphosed Pseudotachylyte And Determination Of Seismic Rupture Depth During Devonian Caledonian Extension, North Norway, Susan E. Leib Jan 2013

Thermobarometry Of Metamorphosed Pseudotachylyte And Determination Of Seismic Rupture Depth During Devonian Caledonian Extension, North Norway, Susan E. Leib

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

Crustal faulting has long been known as the source of shallow seismicity, and the seismogenic zone is the depth (3-15 km) within the crust that is capable of co-seismic slip, largely under brittle conditions. However, some continental seismicity occurs at depths >> 15 km. I performed thermobarometry of mylonitic pseudotachylyte to determine the P-T of a seismogenic extensional fault in the Caledonian Norwegian margin. Two shear zones (Eidsfjord and Fiskfjord) located in northern Norway exhibit brittle extension propagating into the ductile regime of the lower crust as evidenced by the presence of pseudotachylyte. Averages from Eidsfjord (653 ± 38°C and 570 …

Investigation Of Spin-Independent Cp Violation In Neutron And Nuclear Radiative Β Decays, Daheng He Jan 2013

Investigation Of Spin-Independent Cp Violation In Neutron And Nuclear Radiative Β Decays, Daheng He

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

CP violation is an important condition to explain the preponderance of baryons in our universe, yet the available CP violation in the Standard Model (SM) via the so-called Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism seems to not provide enough CP violation. Thus searching for new sources of CP violation is one of the central tasks of modern physics. In this thesis, we focus on a new possible source of CP violation which generates triple-product correlations in momenta which can appear in neutron and nuclear radiative β decay. We show that at low energies such a CP violating correlation may arise from the exotic coupling …

A Robust Rgb-D Slam System For 3d Environment With Planar Surfaces, Po-Chang Su Jan 2013

A Robust Rgb-D Slam System For 3d Environment With Planar Surfaces, Po-Chang Su

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Simultaneous localization and mapping is the technique to construct a 3D map of unknown environment. With the increasing popularity of RGB-depth (RGB-D) sensors such as the Microsoft Kinect, there have been much research on capturing and reconstructing 3D environments using a movable RGB-D sensor. The key process behind these kinds of simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) systems is the iterative closest point or ICP algorithm, which is an iterative algorithm that can estimate the rigid movement of the camera based on the captured 3D point clouds. While ICP is a well-studied algorithm, it is problematic when it is used in …

An Analysis Of The Allocation Of Fema Public Assistance Funds Along The U.S. Gulf Coast Following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, And Wilma, Pamela Camille Golden Jan 2013

An Analysis Of The Allocation Of Fema Public Assistance Funds Along The U.S. Gulf Coast Following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, And Wilma, Pamela Camille Golden

LSU Master's Theses

Due to the effects of global climate change, natural disasters such as hurricanes are increasing in terms of both intensity and frequency. During the record-breaking hurricane season of 2005, Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma struck the U. S. Gulf Coast, affecting areas from Texas to Florida and causing billions of dollars in damage. This study examines the allocation of FEMA Public Assistance across the affected Gulf of Mexico states, what factors account for variation in in assistance allocation, what are the priorities for recovery among county leaders and what obstacles they have encountered since 2005. This study includes 136 counties …

Population Ecology Of The Ribbed Mussel In Southeastern Louisiana, Aaron Jacob Honig Jan 2013

Population Ecology Of The Ribbed Mussel In Southeastern Louisiana, Aaron Jacob Honig

LSU Master's Theses

Benthic intertidal bivalves play an essential role in estuarine ecosystems by contributing to habitat provision, water filtration, and promoting productivity. As such, ecosystem level changes that impact population distributions and persistence of local bivalve populations may have large ecosystem level consequences, making it important to better understand the population distribution and ecology of native bivalve populations. Gametogenesis, recruitment, growth, mortality, size structure and density of the ribbed mussel, Geukensia demissa, were examined across a salinity gradient in southeastern Louisiana. In summer 2012, 100-m transects were placed at interior and edge marsh plots to collect data on mussel density, and vegetation …

The Value And Propriety Of Reintroduction As A Conservation Tool For Rare Plants, Edward O. Guerrant Jr. Jan 2013

The Value And Propriety Of Reintroduction As A Conservation Tool For Rare Plants, Edward O. Guerrant Jr.

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Three recent reviews of reintroduction for conservation purposes, which draw on substantial and largely non-overlapping data sets, have come to strikingly different conclusions about its value. One concludes that “reintroduction is generally unlikely to be a successful conservation strategy as currently conducted.” Another that “…this review cannot conclusively comment on the effectiveness of re-introductions…” The third concludes there is “strong evidence in support of the notion that reintroduction, especially in combination with ex situ conservation, is a tool that can go a long way toward meeting the needs it was intended to address.” The argument over the conservation value of …

Book Review: Burden Of Proof: A Review Of Math On Trial, Paul H. Edelman Jan 2013

Book Review: Burden Of Proof: A Review Of Math On Trial, Paul H. Edelman

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

In Math on Trial, Leila Schneps and Coralie Col mez write about the abuse of mathematical argu ments in criminal trials and how these flawed arguments "have sent innocent people to prison" (p. ix). Indeed, people "saw their lives ripped apart by simple mathematical errors." The purpose of focusing on these errors, despite mathematics' "relatively rare use in trials" (p. x), is "that many of the common mathematical fallacies that pervade the public sphere are perfectly represented by these trials. Thus they serve as ideal illustrations of these errors and of the drastic consequences that faulty reasoning has on real …

Simplicial Complexes Obtained From Qualitative Probability Orders, Paul H. Edelman, Tatiana Gvozdeva, Arkadii Slinko Jan 2013

Simplicial Complexes Obtained From Qualitative Probability Orders, Paul H. Edelman, Tatiana Gvozdeva, Arkadii Slinko

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The goal of this paper is to introduce a new class of simplicial complexes that naturally generalize the threshold complexes. These will be derived from qualitative probability orders on subsets of a finite set that generalize subset orders induced by probability measures. We show that this new class strictly contains the threshold complexes and is strictly contained in the shifted complexes. We conjecture that this class of complexes is exactly the set of strongly acyclic complexes, a class that has previously appeared in the context of cooperative games. Beyond the results themselves, this new class of complexes allows us to …

Robust Estimation Of The Correlation Matrix Of Longitudinal Data, Mehdi Maadooliat, Mohsen Pourahmadi, Jianhua Z. Huang Jan 2013

Robust Estimation Of The Correlation Matrix Of Longitudinal Data, Mehdi Maadooliat, Mohsen Pourahmadi, Jianhua Z. Huang

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We propose a double-robust procedure for modeling the correlation matrix of a longitudinal dataset. It is based on an alternative Cholesky decomposition of the form Σ=DLL D where D is a diagonal matrix proportional to the square roots of the diagonal entries of Σ and L is a unit lower-triangular matrix determining solely the correlation matrix. The first robustness is with respect to model misspecification for the innovation variances in D, and the second is robustness to outliers in the data. The latter is handled using heavy-tailed multivariate t-distributions with unknown degrees of freedom. We …

Molecular Docking And Nmr Binding Studies To Identify Novel Inhibitors Of Human Phosphomevalonate Kinase, Pornthip Boonsri, Terrence S. Neumann, Andrew Lawrence Olson, Sheng Cai, Timothy J. Herdendorf, Henry M. Miziorko, Supa Hannongbua, Daniel S. Sem Jan 2013

Molecular Docking And Nmr Binding Studies To Identify Novel Inhibitors Of Human Phosphomevalonate Kinase, Pornthip Boonsri, Terrence S. Neumann, Andrew Lawrence Olson, Sheng Cai, Timothy J. Herdendorf, Henry M. Miziorko, Supa Hannongbua, Daniel S. Sem

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Phosphomevalonate kinase (PMK) phosphorylates mevalonate-5-phosphate (M5P) in the mevalonate pathway, which is the sole source of isoprenoids and steroids in humans. We have identified new PMK inhibitors with virtual screening, using autodock. Promising hits were verified and their affinity measured using NMR-based 1H–15N heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC) chemical shift perturbation and fluorescence titrations. Chemical shift changes were monitored, plotted, and fitted to obtain dissociation constants (Kd). Tight binding compounds with Kd’s ranging from 6–60 μM were identified. These compounds tended to have significant polarity and negative charge, similar to the natural …

Atom Economical, One-Pot, Three-Reaction Cascade To Novel Tricyclic 2,4-Dihydro-1h-Benzo[F]Isochromenes, Robert J. Hinkle, Shane E. Lewis Jan 2013

Atom Economical, One-Pot, Three-Reaction Cascade To Novel Tricyclic 2,4-Dihydro-1h-Benzo[F]Isochromenes, Robert J. Hinkle, Shane E. Lewis

Arts & Sciences Articles

A three-step domino reaction between 1-aryl-3-hexyne-2,6-diol derivatives and aldehydes is used to construct tricyclic 1,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[f]isochromenes. The cascade is initiated by BF3·OEt2 and involves alkynyl-Prins cyclization, Friedel–Crafts alkenylation, and dehydration/aromatization to create a new, central aromatic ring and eliminate 2 equiv. of water. Electron-donating substituents on the aryl ring of the 1-aryl-3-hexyne-2,6-diols significantly increase overall yields as do electron-rich aldehyde reaction partners. For 2,4-disubstituted 2H-benzo[f]isochromene products, diastereoselectivities in the alkynyl-Prins reaction are ∼1.4 : 1 in favor of the cis-diastereomer. The stereochemistry of one cis-product was verified by …

Test Selection On Extended Finite State Machines With Provable Guarantees, Bo Guo, Mahadevan Subramaniam Jan 2013

Test Selection On Extended Finite State Machines With Provable Guarantees, Bo Guo, Mahadevan Subramaniam

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Building high confidence regression test suites to validate new system versions is a challenging problem. A model- based approach to build a regression test suite from a given test suite is described. The generated test suite includes every test that will traverse a change performed to produce the new version, and consists of only such tests to reduce the testing costs. Finite state machines extended with typed variables (EFSMs) are used to model systems and system changes are mapped to EFSM transition changes adding/deleting/replacing EFSM transitions and states. Tests are a sequence of input and expected output messages with concrete …

The Performance Of Data Segmentation Of The Conjugate Gradient On A Non-Uniform Memory Access Parallel System, Brandon Hildreth Jan 2013

The Performance Of Data Segmentation Of The Conjugate Gradient On A Non-Uniform Memory Access Parallel System, Brandon Hildreth

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Parallel computing is an ever growing field in computer science that is used in everything from cross-discipline research to consumer goods, and because of this it is important to study the efficiency of parallel systems and methods. This thesis will examine storage and execution techniques of matrix vector operations involved in the conjugate Gradient Method on a parallel, non-uniform memory access (NUMA) aware system. In order to fully take advantage of the NUMA memory system, various attempts of segmenting the data are explored. This idea of segmenting becomes complicated when we perform matrix vector computations. Because our data is evenly …

A Fuzzy Logic Approach To Collision Avoidance In Smart Uavs, Michelle Hromatka Jan 2013

A Fuzzy Logic Approach To Collision Avoidance In Smart Uavs, Michelle Hromatka

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

In recent years, there has been a rise in attention given to the issue of collision avoidance techniques for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Many approaches have been proposed but very few have been tested in high density, fixed speed test conditions. This approach successfully uses fuzzy logic to determine an appropriate avoidance maneuver after a possible collision is detected. Initially, fuzzy logic was also used to detect possible collisions, the reasons this level was removed from the final results are detailed within. This approach was chosen for its adaptability, ease of implementation, and robustness in dealing with questionable sensing techniques. …

The Truth About Lie Symmetries: Solving Differential Equations With Symmetry Methods, Ruth A. Steinhour Jan 2013

The Truth About Lie Symmetries: Solving Differential Equations With Symmetry Methods, Ruth A. Steinhour

Senior Independent Study Theses

Differential equations are vitally important in numerous scientific fields. Oftentimes, they are quite challenging to solve. This Independent Study examines one method for solving differential equations. Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie developed this method, which uses groups of symmetries, called Lie groups. These symmetries map one solution curve to another. They can be used to determine a canonical coordinate system for a given differential equation. Writing the differential equation in terms of a different coordinate system can make the equation simpler to solve. This I.S. explores techniques for finding a canonical coordinate system and using it to solve a given differential …

Tree-Ring Evidence Of North Pacific Volcanically Forced Cooling And Forcing Of The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (Pdo), Lauren Vargo Jan 2013

Tree-Ring Evidence Of North Pacific Volcanically Forced Cooling And Forcing Of The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (Pdo), Lauren Vargo

Senior Independent Study Theses

Two large undocumented volcanic eruptions in 1698/9 and 1809 have been previously identified in ice cores as sulfate peaks, and in tree-ring latewood density data as low-density rings. These eruptions can also be recognized using tree-ring width data, and can be identified in the tree-ring record as narrow rings for several consecutive years. The first part of this study uses tree-ring width data from the Gulf of Alaska to provide further evidence that these eruptions occurred. The two eruptions also provide a natural experiment for investigating the effects large volcanic eruptions have on North Pacific climate, including the Pacific Decadal …

Properties Of The Thundercloud Discharges Responsible For Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flashes, Joseph R. Dwyer, Ningyu Liu, Hamid K. Rassoul Jan 2013

Properties Of The Thundercloud Discharges Responsible For Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flashes, Joseph R. Dwyer, Ningyu Liu, Hamid K. Rassoul

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The source of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) has been an active area of research since their discovery by Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory/Burst and Transient Source Experiment in 1994. These intense bursts of gamma rays originate within thunderclouds via the rapid production of relativistic runaway electrons, accelerated by thundercloud/lightning electric fields to multi-MeV energies. Recent studies have shown that electrical discharges within thunderclouds caused by these runaway electrons can generate currents that rival those of lightning and so could serve as an alternative discharge path for thunderclouds. In particular, the discharges responsible for TGFs produce some of the largest amplitude VLF-LF radio …

Analysis Of The Experiment On Registration Of X-Rays From The Stepped Leader Of A Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Discharge, Leonid P. Babich, Igor M. Kutsyk, Evgeni N. Donsko, Joseph R. Dwyer Jan 2013

Analysis Of The Experiment On Registration Of X-Rays From The Stepped Leader Of A Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Discharge, Leonid P. Babich, Igor M. Kutsyk, Evgeni N. Donsko, Joseph R. Dwyer

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Using a Monte Carlo technique to simulate the transport of runaway electrons (REs) and X-rays in the atmosphere and through attenuators covering detectors, we have modeled the results of experiments to detect X-rays from triggered lightning and stepped leaders of a natural cloud-to-ground lightning. In the model, bremsstrahlung of high-energy runaway electrons (REs) generated at the leader front is assumed to be the origin of X-rays. Specific fluxes (per one RE) of photons and bremsstrahlung energy at the detectors were calculated. The analysis was executed with monoenergetic and exponential initial energy distributions of REs with different angular distributions. To reproduce …

Search For Heavy Quarks Decaying Into A Top Quark And A W Or Z Boson Using Lepton + Jets Events In Pp Collisions At √S = 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration Jan 2013

Search For Heavy Quarks Decaying Into A Top Quark And A W Or Z Boson Using Lepton + Jets Events In Pp Collisions At √S = 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

Results are presented from a search for the pair-production of heavy quarks, QQ¯ , that decay exclusively into a top quark and a W or Z boson. The search is performed using a sample of proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1, collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment. The signal region is defined using a sample of events containing one electron or muon, missing transverse momentum, and at least four jets with large transverse momenta, where one jet is likely to originate from the decay of a bottom quark. No significant …

Azimuthal Anisotropy Of Π⁰ And Η Mesons In Au + Au Collisions At √Snn=200, Andrew Marshall Adare, Gyöngyi Baksay, László A. Baksay, Marcus Hohlmann Jan 2013

Azimuthal Anisotropy Of Π⁰ And Η Mesons In Au + Au Collisions At √Snn=200, Andrew Marshall Adare, Gyöngyi Baksay, László A. Baksay, Marcus Hohlmann

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The azimuthal anisotropy coefficients v₂ and v₄ of π⁰ and η mesons are measured in Au + Au collisions at √sNN=200 GeV as a function of transverse momentum pT (1-14 GeV/c) and centrality. The extracted v₂ coefficients are found to be consistent between the two meson species over the measured pT range. The ratio of v₄/v₂² for π⁰ mesons is found to be independent of pT for 1-9 GeV/c, implying a lack of sensitivity of the ratio to the change of underlying physics with pT. Furthermore, the ratio of v₄/v₂² is systematically larger in central collisions, which may reflect the …

Novel Resist Systems For Euv Lithography : Ler, Chain-Scission, Nanoparticle And More, Brian Cardineau Jan 2013

Novel Resist Systems For Euv Lithography : Ler, Chain-Scission, Nanoparticle And More, Brian Cardineau

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography is currently the best option for replacing 193-nm lithography in future IC fabrication. For EUV to be successful, however, there are a number of challenges that must be overcome. Current resist designs struggle to meet the demands of future lithography nodes. We propose the best way to overcome these obstacles is through the design of novel resist systems.

Surface Plasmonic Lens Driven Photoelectron Source For Multi-Beam Applications, Heon Joon Choi Jan 2013

Surface Plasmonic Lens Driven Photoelectron Source For Multi-Beam Applications, Heon Joon Choi

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) assisted photoelectron source array is proposed for use in distributed multiple electron beam lithography applications. Individual source is composed of a metal/dielectric surface structure with concentric circular grooves of subwavelength width surrounding a sub-wavelength aperture. Such optical power concentrators, called "plasmonic lenses", collect light incident over a broad area by converting it to surface electromagnetic waves, specifically SPP's, through diffraction by the sub-wavelength grooves surrounding the aperture. Through constructive interference of the generated SPPs between neighboring grooves, controlled by the periodicity of the grooves, high optical power densities can be achieved at the center of the …

Potential For High Resolution Microscintigraphy Using Polycapillary Optics, Patrick Richard Conlon Jan 2013

Potential For High Resolution Microscintigraphy Using Polycapillary Optics, Patrick Richard Conlon

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Scintigraphy, also known as nuclear imaging, is the process of imaging an object that has been labeled with a radioactive material. A novel technique employing polycapillary optics for very high - resolution scintigraphy is presented. The small channel size and angular selectivity of polycapillary optics allow them to act as multiple-hole collimators and be used with high - resolution detectors. The ability of the optics to work with high resolution detectors allow the system to discriminate against scatter, thus negating the need for energy sensitive detectors, which are known to have poor resolution. Therefore the use of polycapillary optics presents …

Non-Likelihood Based Model Evaluation And Comparison With Application To Genetic And Clinical Hiv-1 Outcomes, Ashley Elise Giambrone Jan 2013

Non-Likelihood Based Model Evaluation And Comparison With Application To Genetic And Clinical Hiv-1 Outcomes, Ashley Elise Giambrone

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Although treatment for human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) has undergone drastic change and morbidity and mortality has decreased over time, the development of drug-resistant HIV-1 is of concern for the long-term antiretroviral treatment of infected individuals. Drug-resistant virus is known to manifest with potentially complex mutational patterns in the HIV-1 genotype sequence and is associated with decreased response to therapy. Resistance occurs either as a result of development of mutations in the viral genome under selective drug pressure or as a result of naturally occurring polymorphisms. The most effective treatment methods are still debated at this time; however, current treatment …

An Analysis Of Surface Air Temperature Trends And Variability Along The Andes, Eric Franquist Jan 2013

An Analysis Of Surface Air Temperature Trends And Variability Along The Andes, Eric Franquist

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Climate change is difficult to study in mountainous regions such as the Andes since steep changes in elevation cannot always be resolved by climate models. However, it is important to examine temperature trends in this region as rises in surface air temperature are leading to the melting of tropical glaciers. Local communities rely on the glacier-fed streamflow to get their water for drinking, irrigation, and livestock. Moreover, communities also rely on the tourism of hikers who come to the region to view the glaciers. As the temperatures increase, these glaciers are no longer in equilibrium with their current climate and …

Augmenting Program Data With Secondary Data Sources To Improve The Quality Of Existing Statistics : Four Examples From The New York State Department Of Health Hospital-Acquired Infection Reporting Program, Valerie Benson Haley Jan 2013

Augmenting Program Data With Secondary Data Sources To Improve The Quality Of Existing Statistics : Four Examples From The New York State Department Of Health Hospital-Acquired Infection Reporting Program, Valerie Benson Haley

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The objective of this dissertation is to illustrate the novel application of methods that can be used to improve the accuracy of hospital-acquired infection (HAI) rates. Public reporting of HAI rates is relatively new. New York was one of the first states to mandate reporting in acute care hospitals (2007), followed by national pay-for-reporting in 2011, and national value-based purchasing in 2013. Given the financial ramifications of public reporting, it is critical that the data are validated and adjusted for differences in underlying risk among patient populations so that hospital performance can be fairly compared. However, limited information on the …
