In Actu Et In Silicio: Linear And Nonlinear Photophysical Characterization Of A Novel Europium Complex, And Incorporating Computational Calculations In The Analysis Of Novel Organic Compounds, Adam Woodward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite not being a tangible substance, light is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in numerous areas of science and technology: the use of laser excitation of a fluorescent probe can generate incredibly detailed images of cellular structures without the need for large amounts of dissection; new types of solar cells are being produced using organic dyes to harvest light; computer data can be stored by inducing a chemical change in a compound through irradiation with light. However, before any of these materials can be applied in such a way, their properties must first be analyzed for them to be deemed …

Dynamical Spin Injection In Graphene, Simranjeet Singh Jan 2014

Dynamical Spin Injection In Graphene, Simranjeet Singh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within the exciting current trend to explore novel low-dimensional systems, the possibility to inject pure spin currents in graphene and other two-dimensional crystals has attracted considerable attention in the past few years. The theoretical prediction of large spin relaxation times and experimentally observed mesoscopic-scale spin diffusion lengths places graphene as a promising base system for future spintronics devices. This is due to the unique characteristics intrinsic to the two-dimensional lattice of carbon atoms forming graphene, such as the lack of nuclear spins and weak spin-orbit coupling of the charge carriers. Interestingly for some spintronic applications, the latter can be chemically …

Improved Internet Security Protocols Using Cryptographic One-Way Hash Chains, Amerah Alabrah Jan 2014

Improved Internet Security Protocols Using Cryptographic One-Way Hash Chains, Amerah Alabrah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, new approaches that utilize the one-way cryptographic hash functions in designing improved network security protocols are investigated. The proposed approaches are designed to be scalable and easy to implement in modern technology. The first contribution explores session cookies with emphasis on the threat of session hijacking attacks resulting from session cookie theft or sniffing. In the proposed scheme, these cookies are replaced by easily computed authentication credentials using Lamport's well-known one-time passwords. The basic idea in this scheme revolves around utilizing sparse caching units, where authentication credentials pertaining to cookies are stored and fetched once needed, thereby, …

Functional Scaffolding For Musical Composition: A New Approach In Computer-Assisted Music Composition, Amy K. Hoover Jan 2014

Functional Scaffolding For Musical Composition: A New Approach In Computer-Assisted Music Composition, Amy K. Hoover

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While it is important for systems intended to enhance musical creativity to define and explore musical ideas conceived by individual users, many limit musical freedom by focusing on maintaining musical structure, thereby impeding the user's freedom to explore his or her individual style. This dissertation presents a comprehensive body of work that introduces a new musical representation that allows users to explore a space of musical rules that are created from their own melodies. This representation, called functional scaffolding for musical composition (FSMC), exploits a simple yet powerful property of multipart compositions: The pattern of notes and rhythms in different …

Delayed Rejection Algorithm To Estimate Bayesian Social Networks, Alberto Caimo, Antonietta Mira Jan 2014

Delayed Rejection Algorithm To Estimate Bayesian Social Networks, Alberto Caimo, Antonietta Mira

Articles

Statistical social network analysis has become a very active and fertile area of research in the recent past. Recent developments in Bayesian computational methods have been successfully applied to estimate social network models. The Delayed rejection (DR) strategy is a modification of the Metropolis-Hastings (MH) algorithms that reduces the variance of the resulting Markov chain Monte Carlo estimators and allows partial adaptation of the proposal distribution. In this paper we show how the DR strategy can be exploited to estimate dyadic independence social network models leading to an average 40% variance reduction relative to the competing MH algorithm, confirming that …

Tandem Mass Spectrometry Of Multiply Charged Polymers: Using Ms3 Strategies For Full Structural Characterization Of Polyacrylamides, Paul M. Krauss Jan 2014

Tandem Mass Spectrometry Of Multiply Charged Polymers: Using Ms3 Strategies For Full Structural Characterization Of Polyacrylamides, Paul M. Krauss

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In mass spectrometry, a compound is taken and converted into a gas-phase ion by an electrical charge (Balogh, 2009). From these ions, a chart is then created that displays the mass to charge ratio, which is able to then be analyzed to find out the charge of the ions, as well as the mass of the compound (Balogh, 2009). One specific type of mass spectrometry there is available is known as a fragmentation spectrometry. In fragmentation spectrometry, the molecule is not only ionized and analyzed, but fragmented parts that are formed into ions are also ionized and analyzed. This is …

Equations Of State In A Strongly Interacting Relativistic System, Jason Paul Keith Jan 2014

Equations Of State In A Strongly Interacting Relativistic System, Jason Paul Keith

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

It has long been understood that the ground state of a superdense quark system, a Fermi liquid of weakly interacting quarks, is unstable with respect to the formation of diquark condensates. This nonperturbative phenomenon is essentially equivalent to the Cooper in-stability of conventional BCS superconductivity. As the quark pairs have nonzero color charge, this kind of superconductivity breaks the SU(3) color gauge symmetry, thus the phe-nomenon is called color superconductivity. However, not much is known about the behavior of quark systems at moderate densities between the formation of baryons and asymptotic freedom. Strong theoretical and experimental evidence suggests that there …

Neighbor Discovery Message Hold Times For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Joshua Lee Mccartney Jan 2014

Neighbor Discovery Message Hold Times For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Joshua Lee Mccartney

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

We present the results of an experimental study designed to understand the impact of neighbor discovery message hold times on network performance measures for a mobile ad hoc network. A physical testbed of pseudo-mobile nodes using the OLSR routing protocol was used for our experiments. We found statistically significant evidence to suggest that setting the neighbor discovery message hold times close to the neighbor discovery message interval time results in the best overall network performance.

Digitally Manufactured Spatially Variant Photonic Crystals, Javier Jair Pazos Jan 2014

Digitally Manufactured Spatially Variant Photonic Crystals, Javier Jair Pazos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Metamaterials and photonic crystals are engineered composites that exhibit electromagnetic properties superior to those found in nature. They have been shown to produce novel and useful phenomena that allow extraordinary control over the electromagnetic field. One of these phenomena is self-collimation, an effect observed in photonic crystals in which a beam of light propagates without diffraction and is forced to flow in the direction of the crystal. Self-collimation however, like many of the mechanisms enabled through dispersion engineering, is effective in directions only along the principal axes of the lattice. To this effect, a general purpose synThesis procedure was developed …

Predicting Propylene Loss With Inferential Model Development Using Design Of Experiments (Doe) And Historical Data, Jeffrey Allen Wheeler Jan 2014

Predicting Propylene Loss With Inferential Model Development Using Design Of Experiments (Doe) And Historical Data, Jeffrey Allen Wheeler

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Inferential models are a highly researched topic as the science of digital automation becomes more prevalent as information is in abundance. Welldeveloped inferred models can augment the use of analyzers in steady state processing and highly correlated ones can even replace online analytics. The use of design of experiments (DOE) inferred models with historical process data and a rigorous plant simulator can reduce the case study duration while achieving a high degree of accuracy. This paper uses surface response and full factorial models as the first step in model development, and then uses actual historical plant data to create a …

Assessing The Viability Of Converting Indiana's Energy Framework To Renewable Sources By 2050, Lincoln Barlow 14 Jan 2014

Assessing The Viability Of Converting Indiana's Energy Framework To Renewable Sources By 2050, Lincoln Barlow 14

Honor Scholar Theses

Conflicting views exist with regard to the feasibility of transitioning the world from a dependence on fossil fuel energy production to a completely renewable, emission-free energy climate. Findings show that the potential for Indiana to match its current energy production solely utilizing renewable energy capabilities existing on the Indiana landscape is available using a calculated combination of available resources from available analytical data. The annual required energy production, phased in gradually through the year 2050 and excluding the transportation sector, would consist of ~61% onshore wind energy (443,900 GWh), ~1% offshore wind energy (8,129 GWh), ~1% hydroelectric power (6,833 GWh), …

Geological, Petrological, And Geodynamical Characteristics Of The Karacaali Magmatic Complex (Kırıkkale) In The Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex, Turkey, Ömer Eli̇tok, Şenel Özdamar, Gürkan Bacak, Bektaş Uz Jan 2014

Geological, Petrological, And Geodynamical Characteristics Of The Karacaali Magmatic Complex (Kırıkkale) In The Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex, Turkey, Ömer Eli̇tok, Şenel Özdamar, Gürkan Bacak, Bektaş Uz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Mafic and felsic igneous rocks in the Karacaali Magmatic Complex (KMC) in the northwestern margin of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC) are classified into 4 groups: i) granitoid pluton including granite, granodiorite, and monzonite; ii) a few meter-scale porphyritic microgranite enclaves within the hybrid rocks; iii) hybrid rocks formed by mixing/mingling of mafic lavas (basaltic/diabasic/lamprophyric), anorthositic, and/or rhyolitic lavas; iv) diabasic dykes/veins within the granitoid pluton. Major element composition of the granitoid pluton and porphyritic microgranite enclaves within the hybrid rocks indicate subalkaline, calc-alkaline, and mostly I-type characteristics. These rocks are mainly peraluminous with aluminum saturation index > 1, but …

Nanosphere Lithography - Exploiting Self-Assembly On The Nanoscale For Sophisticated Nanostructure Fabrication, Eser Metin Akinoglu, Anthony John Morfa, Michael Giersig Jan 2014

Nanosphere Lithography - Exploiting Self-Assembly On The Nanoscale For Sophisticated Nanostructure Fabrication, Eser Metin Akinoglu, Anthony John Morfa, Michael Giersig

Turkish Journal of Physics

We demonstrate the fabrication of sophisticated nanostructures using nanosphere lithography (NSL). These include periodic triangular and pyramidal islands as well as periodically perforated thin films and cavities on the nano- and microscale. Furthermore, periodic arrays of vertically standing multiwalled carbon nanotubes are grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition from catalyst islands that were prepatterned by NSL. Moreover, we discuss the applicability of NSL to rough surfaces and show that the ratio between nanosphere size and roughness is determinant of the resulting nanostructure produced. Excellent, limited, and bad applicability of NSL are shown for smooth, rough, and very rough surfaces, …

Deriving The Snel-Descartes Law For A Single Photon, Randy Wayne Jan 2014

Deriving The Snel-Descartes Law For A Single Photon, Randy Wayne

Turkish Journal of Physics

The laws of reflection and refraction are typically derived using a dispersion relation that assumes that the angular frequency stays the same across a vacuum--dielectric interface and that the angular wave number increases. At the single photon level, this means that the total energy of the photon is conserved but the linear momentum is not. Here I derive the laws of reflection and refraction for a single photon using a dispersion relation that is consistent with the conservation of both total energy and linear momentum. To ensure that both conservation laws are upheld, the optical path length must be considered …

Synthesis Of New Pyrazole And Antibacterial Pyrazolopyrimidine Derivatives, Ameur Rahmouni, Anis Romdhane, Abderrahim Ben Said, Kaouther Majouli, Hichem Ben Jannet Jan 2014

Synthesis Of New Pyrazole And Antibacterial Pyrazolopyrimidine Derivatives, Ameur Rahmouni, Anis Romdhane, Abderrahim Ben Said, Kaouther Majouli, Hichem Ben Jannet

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

3-Substituted-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-amines 2a--c were synthesized by treating 5-aminopyrazole-4-carbonitriles 1a--c with formamide. The reactivity of compounds 1a--c towards some cyclic anhydrides was studied. The condensation of 5-aminopyrazole-4-carbonitrile 1b with triethylorthoformate gives imidate 7b, which reacts with a series of primary amines and leads to pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine-4-amines 9 and 10. The reaction of imidate 7b with ammonia and hydroxylamine afforded pyrazolopyrimidine 2b and pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-5-(4H)-ol 11, respectively. The synthesized compounds were completely characterized by ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, IR, and HRMS. The antibacterial activity of some new synthesized compounds was evaluated and appeared to be significant.

On A Tower Of Garcia And Stichtenoth, Seher Tutdere Jan 2014

On A Tower Of Garcia And Stichtenoth, Seher Tutdere

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In 2003, Garcia and Stichtenoth constructed a recursive tower F = (F_n)_{n \geq 0} of algebraic function fields over the finite field F_q, where q = l^r with r \geq 1 and l > 2 is a power of the characteristic of F_q. They also gave a lower bound for the limit of this tower. In this paper, we compute the exact value of the genus of the algebraic function field F_n/F_q for each n \geq 0. Moreover, we prove that when q = 2^k, with k \geq 2, the limit of the tower F attains the lower bound given by …

Norden Structures Of Hessian Type, Arif Salimov, Aydin Gezer

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we show that Kähler (para-Kähler) manifolds admit a Norden--Hessian metric h = \nabla^2f if the function f is holomorphic (para-holomorphic), and we further consider the existence condition of para-Kähler structures for Norden--Hessian metrics.

Equivariant Structure Constants For Hamiltonian-T-Spaces, Ho Hon Leung Jan 2014

Equivariant Structure Constants For Hamiltonian-T-Spaces, Ho Hon Leung

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

If there exists a set of canonical classes on a compact Hamiltonian-T-space in the sense of R Goldin and S Tolman, we derive some formulas for certain equivariant structure constants in terms of other equivariant structure constants and the values of canonical classes restricted to some fixed points. These formulas can be regarded as a generalization of Tymoczko's results.

Moment Equalities For Sums Of Random Variables Via Integer Partitions And Faà Di Bruno's Formula, Dietmar Ferger Jan 2014

Moment Equalities For Sums Of Random Variables Via Integer Partitions And Faà Di Bruno's Formula, Dietmar Ferger

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We give moment equalities for sums of independent and identically distributed random variables including, in particular, centered and specifically symmetric summands. Two different types of proofs, combinatorial and analytical, lead to 2 different types of formulas. Furthermore, the combinatorial method allows us to find the optimal lower and upper constants in the Marcinkiewicz--Zygmund inequalities in the case of even moment-orders. Our results are applied to give elementary proofs of the classical central limit theorem (CLT) and of the CLT for the empirical bootstrap. Moreover, we derive moment and exponential inequalities for self-normalized sums.
