Topics In Quantum Metrology, Control, And Communications, Bhaskar Roy Bardhan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Noise present in an environment has significant impacts on a quantum system affecting properties like coherence, entanglement and other metrological features of a quantum state. In this dissertation, we address the effects of different types of noise that are present in a communication channel (or medium) and an interferometric setup, and analyze their effects in the contexts of preserving coherence and entanglement, phase sensitivity, and limits on rate of communication through noisy channels. We first consider quantum optical phase estimation in quantum metrology when phase fluctuations are introduced in the system by its interaction with a noisy environment. By considering …

Determination Of Predominant Species Of Oil-Degrading Bacteria In The Oiled Sediment In Barataria Bay, Louisiana, Lauren Nicole Navarre Jan 2014

Determination Of Predominant Species Of Oil-Degrading Bacteria In The Oiled Sediment In Barataria Bay, Louisiana, Lauren Nicole Navarre

LSU Master's Theses

The effects of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill on the bacterial communities in coastal sediments are relatively known but few studies have been published evaluating the impacts of the spill on oil-degrading bacterial populations in the salt marsh sediments of Barataria Bay, Louisiana. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of the oil spill on the microbial community in Barataria Bay, Louisiana through the determination of predominate species of oil-degrading bacteria in marsh sediments, and to determine how well certain bacterial isolates can degrade crude oil in the region by taking samples from three areas of …

Reproductive Phase Determination In Male Meagre (Argyrosomus Regius, Sciaenidae): Testis Development And Histologic Corroboration Of A Gross Anatomical Scale, Nuno Prista, Leonel Gordo, José Lino Costa, Maria José Costa, Cynthia Jones Jan 2014

Reproductive Phase Determination In Male Meagre (Argyrosomus Regius, Sciaenidae): Testis Development And Histologic Corroboration Of A Gross Anatomical Scale, Nuno Prista, Leonel Gordo, José Lino Costa, Maria José Costa, Cynthia Jones

OES Faculty Publications

Reproductive stage determination of male gonads has received sparse attention in fish biology literature with few studies detailing the building of gross anatomical- and histologic scales. The meagre (Argyrosomus regius) is one of the world's largest sciaenids and supports a significant regional fishery in European and North African waters whose reproductive patterns are yet to be fully investigated. In the present study, we derive a macroscopic grading system for meagre testis using semi-quantitative graphs that feature the testis variability along the species size range and time of the year. We then describe the histological stages and reproductive phases of male …

Developing Important Marine Mammal Area Criteria: Learning From Ecologically Or Biologically Significant Areas And Key Biodiversity Areas, Collenn M. Corrigan, Jeff A. Ardron, Mia T. Comeros-Raynal, Erich Hoyt, Giuseppe Notarbartolo Di Sciara, Kent E. Carpenter Jan 2014

Developing Important Marine Mammal Area Criteria: Learning From Ecologically Or Biologically Significant Areas And Key Biodiversity Areas, Collenn M. Corrigan, Jeff A. Ardron, Mia T. Comeros-Raynal, Erich Hoyt, Giuseppe Notarbartolo Di Sciara, Kent E. Carpenter

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

1. This paper explores how criteria to identify important marine mammal areas (IMMAs) could be developed, and nested in existing global criteria. This process would consider 134 species of marine mammals. 2. Particular attention is given to two suites of global criteria to identify areas important for the persistence of marine biodiversity: Ecologically or Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) developed through the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in revision through the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). They are seen as mutually complementary in the development of IMMAs. 3. The specificities necessary for identifying …

Effects Of Predation Upon The Long-Spined Sea Urchin Diadema Antillarum By The Spotted Spiny Lobster Panulirus Guttatus, Meredith D. Kintzing, Mark J. Butler Iv Jan 2014

Effects Of Predation Upon The Long-Spined Sea Urchin Diadema Antillarum By The Spotted Spiny Lobster Panulirus Guttatus, Meredith D. Kintzing, Mark J. Butler Iv

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Sea urchins, important herbivores in marine ecosystems, are strongly impacted by both the direct and indirect effects of predation, and the long-spined sea urchin Diadema antillarum is no exception. Once abundant on Caribbean coral reefs, D. antillarum populations were decimated by disease in the early 1980s, and only where their natural predators have been over-fished has D. antillarum recovery been observed. Spiny lobsters (Palinuridae) are predators of sea urchins, and although there are several species of spiny lobster in the Caribbean, only the spotted spiny lobster Panulirus guttatus is restricted to coral reefs where D. antillarum dwells. We investigated the …

Design And Study Of The Efflux Function Of The Egfp Fused Mexab-Oprm Membrane Transporter In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Using Spectroscopy, Feng Ding, Kerry J. Lee, Ardeschir Vahedi-Faridi, Hiroshi Yoneyama, Christopher J. Osgood, Xiao-Hong Nancy Xu

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Multidrug membrane transporters (efflux pumps) can selectively extrude a variety of structurally and functionally diverse substrates (e.g., chemotoxics, antibiotics), leading to multidrug resistance (MDR) and ineffective treatment of a wide variety of diseases. In this study, we have designed and constructed a fusion gene (egfp-mexB) of N-terminal mexB with C-terminal egfp, inserted it into a plasmid vector (pMMB67EH), and successfully expressed it in the Δ MexB (MexB deletion) strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosato create a new strain that expresses MexA-(EGFP-MexB)-OprM. We characterized the fusion gene using gel electrophoresis and DNA sequencing, and determined its expression in live …

Technical Note: Swift - A Fast Semi-Empirical Model For Polar Stratospheric Ozone Loss, M. Rex, S. Kremser, P. Huck, G. Bodeker, I. Wohltmann, M. L. Santee, P. F. Bernath Jan 2014

Technical Note: Swift - A Fast Semi-Empirical Model For Polar Stratospheric Ozone Loss, M. Rex, S. Kremser, P. Huck, G. Bodeker, I. Wohltmann, M. L. Santee, P. F. Bernath

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

An extremely fast model to estimate the degree of stratospheric ozone depletion during polar winters is described. It is based on a set of coupled differential equations that simulate the seasonal evolution of vortex-averaged hydrogen chloride (HCl), nitric acid (HNO3), chlorine nitrate (ClONO2), active forms of chlorine (ClOx = Cl+ClO+2ClOOCl) and ozone (O3) on isentropic levels within the polar vortices. Terms in these equations account for the chemical and physical processes driving the time rate of change of these species. Eight empirical fit coefficients associated with these terms are derived by iteratively fitting the equations …

Molecular Opacities For Exoplanets, P. F. Bernath Jan 2014

Molecular Opacities For Exoplanets, P. F. Bernath

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Spectroscopic observations of exoplanets are now possible by transit methods and direct emission. Spectroscopic requirements for exoplanets are reviewed based on existing measurements and model predictions for hot Jupiters and super-Earths. Molecular opacities needed to simulate astronomical observations can be obtained from laboratory measurements, ab initio calculations or a combination of the two approaches. This discussion article focuses mainly on laboratory measurements of hot molecules as needed for exoplanet spectroscopy.

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Fluorine-containing species can be extremely effective atmospheric greenhouse gases. We present fluorine budgets using organic and inorganic species retrieved by the ACE-FTS satellite instrument supplemented with output from the SLIMCAT 3-D chemical transport model. The budgets are calculated between 2004 and 2009 for a number of latitude bands: 70-30 °N, 30-00 °N, 00 °N-30 °S, and 30-70°S. At lower altitudes total fluorine profiles are dominated by the contribution from CFC-12, up to an altitude of 20 km in the extra-tropics and 29 km in the tropics; above these altitudes the profiles are dominated by hydrogen fluoride (HF). Our data show …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The emerging field of next-generation sequencing (NGS) is rapidly expanding capabilities for cutting edge genomic research, with applications that can help meet marine conservation challenges of food security, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Navigating the use of these tools, however, is complex at best. Furthermore, applications of marine genomic questions are limited in developing nations where both marine biodiversity and threats to marine biodiversity are most concentrated. This is particularly true in Southeast Asia. The first Pan-Pacific Advanced Studies Institute (PacASI) entitled "Genomic Applications to Marine Science and Resource Management in Southeast Asia" was held in July 2012 in Dumaguete, …

Evolution Of The Freshwater Sardinella, Sardinella Tawilis (Clupeiformes: Clupeidae), In Taal Lake, Philippines And Identification Of Iits Marine Sister-Species, Sardinella Hualiensis, Demian Willette, Kent E. Carpenter, Mudjekeewis Santos Jan 2014

Evolution Of The Freshwater Sardinella, Sardinella Tawilis (Clupeiformes: Clupeidae), In Taal Lake, Philippines And Identification Of Iits Marine Sister-Species, Sardinella Hualiensis, Demian Willette, Kent E. Carpenter, Mudjekeewis Santos

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We identify the sister species of the world's only freshwater sardinella, Sardinella tawilis (Herre, 1927) of Taal Lake, Philippines as the morphologically-similar marine Taiwanese sardinella Sardinella hualiensis (Chu and Tsai, 1958). Evidence of incomplete lineage sorting and a species tree derived from three mitochondrial genes and one nuclear gene indicate that S. tawilis diverged from S. hualiensis in the late Pleistocene. Neutrality tests, mismatch distribution analysis, sequence diversity indices, and species tree analysis indicate populations of both species have long been stable and that the divergence between these two lineages occurred prior to the putative 18th century formation of Taal …

Modeling Near Surface, Gas-Induced Seafloor Deformation Using Thin Plate Mechanics In The Thunder Horse Oil Field, Gulf Of Mexico And Ninilchik Field, Cook Inlet Basin, Alaska, Michael I. Thoma Jan 2014

Modeling Near Surface, Gas-Induced Seafloor Deformation Using Thin Plate Mechanics In The Thunder Horse Oil Field, Gulf Of Mexico And Ninilchik Field, Cook Inlet Basin, Alaska, Michael I. Thoma

LSU Master's Theses

Seabed topographic expressions such as pockmarks and domes caused by the vertical migration and accumulation of methane are found in muddy, cohesive sea beds around the world. These surface features range from 10-1000 m in diameter and 1-20 m in relief (Judd and Hovland, 2007). The mechanics of soft, cohesive sediment deformation due to overpressure from rising gas is not well understood or quantitatively defined despite the hazards they present to offshore drilling. Shallow gas pockets and overpressured sediments formed by the migration of subsurface gas to the seafloor can cause drilling blowouts, resulting in the release of large amounts …

A Treatment Planning Comparison Of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy And Proton Therapy For A Sample Of Breast Cancer Patients Treated With Post-Mastectomy Radiotherapy, Margaret Hernandez Jan 2014

A Treatment Planning Comparison Of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy And Proton Therapy For A Sample Of Breast Cancer Patients Treated With Post-Mastectomy Radiotherapy, Margaret Hernandez

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: The delivery of post-mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) can be challenging for patients with left-sided breast cancer due to the planning target volume (PTV) size and proximity to critical organs. This study investigates the use of protons, both passively scattered (PS) and intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT), for PMRT in a clinically-representative cohort of patients, and quantitatively compares the predicted outcomes of volumetric modulated photon arc therapy (VMAT) to those of proton therapy to develop an evidence-based rationale for selecting a treatment modality for PMRT patients. Methods: Eight left-sided PMRT patients previously treated at our clinic with VMAT were included in …

Effects Of A Current Transformer's Magnetizing Current On The Driving Voltage In Self-Oscillating Converters, Güngör Bal, Seli̇m Öncü Jan 2014

Effects Of A Current Transformer's Magnetizing Current On The Driving Voltage In Self-Oscillating Converters, Güngör Bal, Seli̇m Öncü

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Magnetizing inductance is one of the parameters that affect the phase and amplitude error of the output current of current transformers (CTs). In this study, the linear circuit model of a CT is developed to be used for driving purposes in power electronics applications. A simulation of the CT and its linear model is achieved. In the model circuit, the effect of the magnetizing inductance on the driving voltage can be examined. The equivalent circuit simulation results and the linear model simulation results along with the calculated results show agreement with each other. These results are compared with experimental results.

Passive Ac Network Supplying The Integration Of Ccc-Hvdc And Vsc-Hvdc Systems, Ali Bidadfar, Mehrdad Abedi, Mehdi Karrari, Gevorg .Babamalek Gharehpetian, Sanaz Namayan Tavana Jan 2014

Passive Ac Network Supplying The Integration Of Ccc-Hvdc And Vsc-Hvdc Systems, Ali Bidadfar, Mehrdad Abedi, Mehdi Karrari, Gevorg .Babamalek Gharehpetian, Sanaz Namayan Tavana

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The integration of a capacitor-commutated converter (CCC) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) (CCC-HVDC) and voltage source converter (VSC) HVDC (VSC-HVDC) is proposed in this paper to supply entirely passive AC networks. The key point of this integration is the flat characteristic of the DC voltage of the CCC-HVDC, which provides the condition for the VSC to connect to the CCC DC link via a current regulator. The advantages of the proposed combined infeeding system are the requirement of only one DC line, and better dynamic responses. The structure of the proposed infeeding system, as well as its control system, is studied. …

Design, Optimization, And Realization Of A Wire Antenna With A 25:1 Bandwidth Ratio For Terrestrial Communications, Korkut Yeği̇n Jan 2014

Design, Optimization, And Realization Of A Wire Antenna With A 25:1 Bandwidth Ratio For Terrestrial Communications, Korkut Yeği̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Wire antennas can be made wideband if the antenna is loaded with passive elements and connected to a lossless matching network. However, realization of the load component values and matching network can easily become impractical. In this study, using only a surface mount and standard component values, antenna loads and a matching network are optimized using genetic algorithms. The optimized design achieves a 25:1 bandwidth ratio, from 20 MHz to 500 MHz, with a maximum voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of 3.5 and minimum system gain of --5 dBi. The antenna system gain at azimuth is taken as the objective …

Some Notes On Nil-Semicommutative Rings, Yinchun Qu, Junchao Wei Jan 2014

Some Notes On Nil-Semicommutative Rings, Yinchun Qu, Junchao Wei

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A ring R is defined to be nil-semicommutative if ab \in N(R) implies arb \in N(R) for a, b, r \in R, where N(R) stands for the set of nilpotents of R. Nil-semicommutative rings are generalization of NI rings. It is proved that (1) R is strongly regular if and only if R is von Neumann regular and nil-semicommutative; (2) Exchange nil-semicommutative rings are clean and have stable range 1; (3) If R is a nil-semicommutative right MC2 ring whose simple singular right modules are YJ-injective, then R is a reduced weakly regular ring; (4) Let R be a nil-semicommutative …

Generalized Derivations Centralizing On Jordan Ideals Of Rings With Involution, Lahcen Oukhtite, Abdellah Mamouni Jan 2014

Generalized Derivations Centralizing On Jordan Ideals Of Rings With Involution, Lahcen Oukhtite, Abdellah Mamouni

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A classical result of Posner states that the existence of a nonzero centralizing derivation on a prime ring forces the ring to be commutative. In this paper we extend Posner's result to generalized derivations centralizing on Jordan ideals of rings with involution and discuss the related results. Moreover, we provide examples to show that the assumed restriction cannot be relaxed.

On Nr^*-Subgroups Of Finite Groups, Xianggui Zhong Jan 2014

On Nr^*-Subgroups Of Finite Groups, Xianggui Zhong

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let G be a finite group and let H be a subgroup of G. H is said to be an NR^*-subgroup of G if there exists a normal subgroup T of G such that G = HT and if whenever K \lhd H and g \in G, then K^g \cap H \cap T\leq K. A number of new characterizations of a group G are given, under the assumption that all Sylow subgroups of certain subgroups of G are NR^*-subgroups.

The New Method Of Determining Koebe Domains For The Class Of Typically Real Functions Under Montel's Normalization, Leopold Koczan, Pawel Zaprawa Jan 2014

The New Method Of Determining Koebe Domains For The Class Of Typically Real Functions Under Montel's Normalization, Leopold Koczan, Pawel Zaprawa

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We consider the class T(r) of typically real functions with the normalization f(0)=0 and f(r)=r for a fixed r \in (0,1). In the limiting case, when r tends to 0, the class T(r) coincides with the class T of typically real functions normalized by f(0)=f'(0)-1=0. In 1980, Lewandowski and Miazga determined the Koebe domain for T(r), i.e. the set of the form \bigcap_{f\in T(r)} f(\Delta). They used the method applied earlier by Goodman. In this paper we present a new, complete method of determining this set. As a corollary, we obtain the Koebe set for T.

Hölder Regularity For Weak Solutions Of Diagonal Divergence Quasilinear Degenerate Elliptic Systems, Yan Dong, Xuewei Cui

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we establish Hölder regularity for weak solutions of a class of diagonal divergence quasilinear degenerate elliptic systems of Hörmander's vector fields when the coefficients belong to the class of VMO_X functions with respect to x and uniformly with respect to u, and the lower order terms satisfy a natural growth condition.

Asymptotic Analysis Of The 2-Dimensional Soliton Solutions For The Nizhnik--Veselov--Novikov Equations, Meti̇n Ünal Jan 2014

Asymptotic Analysis Of The 2-Dimensional Soliton Solutions For The Nizhnik--Veselov--Novikov Equations, Meti̇n Ünal

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we present a direct approach to determining a class of solutions, the asymptotic analysis of the dromion solutions, and their asymptotic properties of the Nizhnik--Veselov--Novikov equations by means of Pfaffians. The form of the solution obtained allows a detailed asymptotic analysis of the dromion solutions and compact expression for the phase shifts and changes of amplitude as a result of interaction of the dromions to be determined.

Existence And Multiplicity Of Positive Solutions For Discrete Anisotropic Equations, Marek Galewski, Renata Wieteska Jan 2014

Existence And Multiplicity Of Positive Solutions For Discrete Anisotropic Equations, Marek Galewski, Renata Wieteska

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we consider the Dirichlet problem for a discrete anisotropic equation with some function \alpha , a nonlinear term f, and a numerical parameter \lambda :\Delta (\alpha (k) \Delta u(k-1) ^{p(k-1)-2}\Delta u(k-1)) + \lambda f(k,u(k))=0, k\in [1,T] . We derive the intervals of a numerical parameter \lambda for which the considered BVP has at least 1, exactly 1, or at least 2 positive solutions. Some useful discrete inequalities are also derived.

Osserman Lightlike Hypersurfaces Of Indefinite S-Manifolds, Letizia Brunetti Jan 2014

Osserman Lightlike Hypersurfaces Of Indefinite S-Manifolds, Letizia Brunetti

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We mainly deal with the problem of admissibility for screen distributions on a lightlike hypersurface of both a semi-Riemannian manifold and an indefinite S-manifold. In the latter case, we first show that a characteristic screen distribution is never admissible, and then we provide a characterization for admissible screen distributions on proper totally umbilical lightlike hypersurfaces. Finally, in studying Osserman conditions, we characterize Osserman totally umbilical hypersurfaces of a semi-Riemannian manifold, obtaining explicit results on the eigenvalues of the pseudo-Jacobi operators in the case of lightlike hypersurfaces with Lorentzian screen leaves.

Regular Poles For The P-Adic Group Gsp_4, Yusuf Danişman Jan 2014

Regular Poles For The P-Adic Group Gsp_4, Yusuf Danişman

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We compute the regular poles of the L-factors of the admissible and irreducible representations of the group GSp_4, which admit a nonsplit Bessel functional and have a Jacquet module length of at most 2 with respect to the unipotent radical of the Siegel parabolic, over a non-Archimedean local field of odd characteristic. We also compute the L-factors of the generic representations of GSp_4.

On Kapranov's Description Of \Overline{M}_{0,N} As A Chow Quotient, Noah Giansiracusa, William Danny Gillam Jan 2014

On Kapranov's Description Of \Overline{M}_{0,N} As A Chow Quotient, Noah Giansiracusa, William Danny Gillam

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We provide a direct proof, valid in arbitrary characteristic, of the result originally proven by Kapranov over C that the Hilbert quotient (P^1)^n//_HPGL_2 and Chow quotient (P^1)^n//_{Ch}PGL_2 are isomorphic to \overline{M}_{0,n}. In both cases this is done by explicitly constructing the universal family of orbit closures and then showing that the induced morphism is an isomorphism onto its image. The proofs of these results in many ways reduce to the case n = 4; in an appendix we outline a formalism of this phenomenon relating to certain operads.
