Household Preferences For Financing Hurricane Risk Mitigation: A Survey Based Empirical Analysis, Damon Fitzgerald Oct 2014

Household Preferences For Financing Hurricane Risk Mitigation: A Survey Based Empirical Analysis, Damon Fitzgerald

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

After a series of major storms over the last 20 years, the state of financing for U.S. natural disaster insurance has undergone substantial disruptions causing many federal and state backed programs against residential property damage to become severally underfunded. In order to regain actuarial soundness, policy makers have proposed a shift to a system that reflects risk-based pricing for property insurance. We examine survey responses from 1394 single-family homeowners in the state of Florida for support of several natural disaster mitigation policy reforms. Utilizing a partial proportional odds model we test for effects of location, risk perception, socio-economic and housing …

Analysis Of Water Quality For Lake Tarpon, Pinellas County, Florida, Kristi Nichole Savio

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Urbanization has taken a major toll on the water quality of Lake Tarpon. In response, there have been management strategies and legislation put in place to help improve water quality. Our objective was to identify what management strategies and other environmental factors were driving changes in Lake Tarpons water quality from 1970 - 2010. Trends in water quality were analyzed against precipitation, land use and water quality management strategies to achieve this. Results found that two water quality management strategies, the creation of the Lake Tarpon Outfall Canal and the closing of the Lake Tarpon Sink, improved water quality the …

Scientists are increasingly engaging the web to provide formal and informal science education opportunities. Despite the prolific growth of web-based resources, systematic evaluation and assessment of their efficacy remains limited. We used clickstream analytics, a widely available method for tracking website visitors and their behavior, to evaluate 60,000 visits over three years to an educational website focused on ecology. Visits originating from search engine queries were a small proportion of the traffic, suggesting the need to actively promote websites to drive visitation. However, the number of visits referred to the website per social media post varied depending on the social …

We consider the problem of identifying large-scale effective connectivity of brain networks from fMRI data. Standard vector autoregressive (VAR) models fail to estimate reliably networks with large number of nodes. We propose a new method based on factor modeling for reliable and efficient high-dimensional VAR analysis of large networks. We develop a subspace VAR (SVAR) model from a factor model (FM), where observations are driven by a lower-dimensional subspace of common latent factors with an AR dynamics. We consider two variants of principal components (PC) methods that provide consistent estimates for the FM hence the implied SVAR model, even of …

Lipophilic cationic technetium-99m-complexes are widely used for myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). However, inherent uncertainties in the supply chain of molybdenum-99, the parent isotope required for manufacturing 99Mo/99mTc generators, intensifies the need for discovery of novel MPI agents incorporating alternative radionuclides. Recently, germanium/gallium (Ge/Ga) generators capable of producing high quality 68Ga, an isotope with excellent emission characteristics for clinical PET imaging, have emerged. Herein, we report a novel 68Ga-complex identified through mechanism-based cell screening that holds promise as a generator-produced radiopharmaceutical for PET MPI.

The magnetic and transport properties of Ni2MnAl thin films prepared using pulse laser deposition were investigated. It was shown that the films are granular and multiphase. Contrary to the data reported earlier we observe nonmonotonic temperature dependence of resistance with minimum in the vicinity of 100 K for the films deposited on substrates held at 773 K and negative magnetoresistance (MR) values of about 2.5% at 5 K and 1.6% at RT in magnetic field of 50 kOe. These values of MR are the highest reported up to date for Ni2MnAl films. Large negative MR in …

There is interplay between intra-atomic orbital hybridization and extra-atomic hybridization in various gadolinium systems, which affects magnetic coupling and electron itinerancy (localization). The results do not always follow expectation. The experimental band structure of thin Gd(0001) films, grown on the Mo(112) surface, along the Γ − M does not agree with expectations even qualitatively. In particular, the dispersion of the gadolinium band, with strong 5d weight near 2 eV binding energy provides considerable evidence to support the case for 4f- 5d hybridization, with increasing 5d localization. On the other hand, there is also evidence of extra-atomic Gd 4f hybridization leading …

Magnetic Properties Of (Γ-Fe₂O₃)₈₀Ag₂₀ Nanocomposites Prepared In Reverse Micelles, Joan A. Wiemann, Jianbiao Dai, Jinke Tang, Gary J. Long, Leonard Spinu

Jinke Tang

The magnetic properties of nanoparticles of gamma-Fe2O3 prepared by reverse micelles have been studied by dc magnetization, transverse ac susceptibility, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The nanoparticles of gamma-Fe2O3 in the nanocomposite (gamma-Fe2O3)80Ag20 exhibit superparamagnetic behavior. The blocking temperatures determined by the three methods indicate the superparamagnetic nature of (gamma-Fe2O3)80Ag20 above 70-80 K and show correlation with measuring time. The average particle diameter obtained by transmission electron microscopy of the gamma-Fe2O3 particles is ~10 nm and that of the Ag particles is ~20 nm. The average particle size determined from the magnetic analyses for the gamma-Fe2O3 particles is ~12 nm. Mössbauer spectra …

High quality films of EuO and Eu0.96Gd0.04O were grown on p-type Si(100) via pulsed laser deposition. X-raydiffraction results show that the addition of Gd changes the growth texture from [001] to [111]. Angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals electron pockets around the X points in Gd-doped EuO, indicating that the band gap in EuO is indirect. Combined photoemission and inverse photoemission measurements showan apparent transition from n-type to p-type behavior, which is likely due to band bending near the polar (111) surface.

Tribological Properties Of Fullerenes C60 And C70 Microparticles, Wei Zao, Jinke Tang, Ashok Puri, Ray L. Sweany, Yuxin Li, Liquan Chen Oct 2014

Tribological Properties Of Fullerenes C60 And C70 Microparticles, Wei Zao, Jinke Tang, Ashok Puri, Ray L. Sweany, Yuxin Li, Liquan Chen

Jinke Tang

The frictional behaviors of fullerenes C60 and C70 were studied because they were speculated to be solid lubricants. For the sublimated pure C60 films on Si(001), a high friction coefficient (0.55–0.8) was observed under different loads and pin materials. For the C70 film, the friction coefficient showed a pin dependence, which changed from 0.5 with an Al2O3 pin to about 0.9 with a 440 stainless steel pin. The relatively high friction coefficients of C60 and C70 films were due to the tendency of the C60 and C70 particles to clump and compress into high shear strength layers rather than due …

The Electronic Structure Change With Gd Doping Of Hfo2 On Silicon, Yaroslav B. Losovyj, Ihor Ketsman, Andrei Sokolov, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Peter A. Dowben, Jinke Tang, Zhenjun Wang Oct 2014

The Electronic Structure Change With Gd Doping Of Hfo2 On Silicon, Yaroslav B. Losovyj, Ihor Ketsman, Andrei Sokolov, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Peter A. Dowben, Jinke Tang, Zhenjun Wang

Gd-doped HfO2 films deposited on silicon substrates undergo a crystallographic change from monoclinic to fluorite (cubic) phase with increasing Gd concentrations. The crystallographic phase change is accompanied by a small increase in the valence bandwidth and in the apparent band offset in the surface region. Electrical measurements show pronounced rectification properties for lightly doped Gd:HfO2 films on p-Si and for heavily-doped Gd:HfO2 films on n-Si, suggesting a crossover from n-type to p -type behavior with increasing doping level.

Enhanced Spin-Dependent Tunneling Magnetoresistance In Magnetite Films Coated By Polystyrene, Wendong Wang, Leszek Malkinski, Jinke Tang Oct 2014

Enhanced Spin-Dependent Tunneling Magnetoresistance In Magnetite Films Coated By Polystyrene, Wendong Wang, Leszek Malkinski, Jinke Tang

Jinke Tang

Hematite films were deposited by magnetron sputtering. A phase transformation from hematite to magnetite occurred when polystyrene (PS) coated hematite films were annealed above 200 °C in hydrogen flow. Giant negative magnetoresistance (MR) was observed with the best MR ratio of over 8% (at room temperature and in a field of 5.5 T) found in samples annealed at 230 °C. The temperature dependence of the resistivity is characteristic of intergranular tunneling. After the PS layer was removed and the films annealed again at 230 °C in hydrogen flow, the resistivity increased by about one order of magnitude and the MR …

The 3 m toroidal grating monochromator (TGM) VUV beamline at CAMD/LSU was realigned to achieve better illumination of the monochromator gratings with the goal of substantially increasing the flux at the higher photon energies. This is partly accomplished through a tilting of the monochromator (by about of 13.5°), with respect to the plane defined by the synchrotron, providing a smaller grazing angle at the initial mirrors. The improved performance of the beamline permits resonant photoemission studies at Gd 4d core threshold without resorting to second order light, which we demonstrate for Gd doped HfO2.

Gd2O3 and Gd-doped HfO2 films were deposited on p-type silicon substrates in a reducing atmosphere. Gd 4f photoexcitation peaks at roughly 7 and 5 eV below the valence band maximum have been identified using the resonant photoemission of Gd2O2 and Gd-doped HfO2 films, respectively. In the case of Gd2O3, strong hybridization with the O 2p band is demonstrated, and there is evidence that the Gd 4f weighted band exhibits dispersion in the bulk band structure. The rectifying (diode-like) properties of Gd-doped HfO2–silicon and Gd2O …

An increase in the density of states between the oxygen 2p bands and the Fermi level is seen with increasing Gd concentrations. In addition, for the Gd-doped HfO2 films, the Gd 4f photoexcitation peak at 5.5 eV below the valence band maximum was identified using resonant photoemission. Electrical measurements show pronounced rectification properties for lightly-doped Gd:HfO2 films on p-Si and for heavily-doped Gd:HfO2 films on n-Si, suggesting a crossover from n-type to p-type behavior with increasing doping level. In addition, there is an increase in the reverse bias current with neutron irradiation.

NiFe2O4 ultrafine powder with high crystallinity has been prepared through a reverse microemulsion route. The composition in starting solution was optimized, and the resulting NiFe2O4 was formed at temperature of around 550–600 °C, which is much lower than that observed from the solid-state reaction. Magnetic investigation indicates that samples are soft-magnetic materials with low coercivity and with the saturation magnetization close to the bulk value of Ni ferrite.

Electrochemical And Spectroscopic Studies Of Ethanol Oxidation On Nano-Cubic Pt Modified By Tin Adatoms, Lu Rao, Bin-Wei Zhang, Yan-Yan Li, Yan-Xia Jiang, Shi-Gang Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

The nano-cubic Pt modified by tin (Sn) was synthesized and used to investigate the role of this adatom played in the ethanol oxidation. The onset potential of ethanol oxidation was significantly shifted negatively which can be forward about 300 mV when the coverage of Sn (θSn)was 0.9. The electrtochemical in situ FTIR result demonstrated that the amount of CO2 increased first, and then decreased with θSn increased, and reached the maximun when θSn was 0.38. Furthermore, the formation of acetic acid could be observed at very low potential (-0.05 V) after modifying Sn adatom, and the amount of acetic acid …

The Immersion Mode Ice Nucleation Behavior Of Mineral Dusts: A Comparison Of Different Pure And Surface Modified Dusts, S. Augustin-Bauditz, H. Wex, S. Kanter, M. Ebert, D. Niedermeier, F. Stolz, A. Prager, F. Stratmann

Michigan Tech Publications

In this study we present results from immersion freezing experiments with size-segregated mineral dust particles. Besides two already existing data sets for Arizona Test Dust (ATD), and Fluka kaolinite, we show two new data sets for illite-NX, which consists mainly of illite, a clay mineral, and feldspar, a common crustal material. The experiments were carried out with the Leipzig Aerosol Cloud Interaction Simulator. After comparing the different dust samples, it became obvious that the freezing ability was positively correlated with the K-feldspar content. Furthermore, a comparison of the composition of the ATD, illite-NX, and feldspar samples suggests that within the …

Influence Of Pt:Ru Ratio In Nanotubes Array Structures On The Electrocatalytic Activity Of Methanol Oxidation, Jin-Hua Yuan, Feng-Bin Wang, Xing-Hua Xia

Journal of Electrochemistry

Bimetallic PtRu nanotubes array electrodes (NTAEs) with varied Pt to Ru atomic ratios have been prepared by electrochemical codeposition in 3-aminopropyltri-methoxysilane modified porous anodic alumina (PAA) membranes. The structure and morphology of the catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Electrochemical results showed that the NTAEs with varied atomic ratios could be achieved by controlling the precursor concentration for deposition. The prepared nanoarrays composed of Pt or PtRu alloy promoted the mass-normalized activity toward the sluggish electrooxidation reaction of methanol due to the increased catalytic activity and real surface area, as well as the …

Recent Progress In Heteroatoms Doped Carbon Materials As A Catalyst For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Wei Ding, Xue Zhang, Li Li, Zi-Dong Wei

Journal of Electrochemistry

Developing catalytic materials for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) with high performance and low cost has been one of the major challenges for large-scale applications of fuel cells. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the heteroatoms doped carbon materials as a catalyst for the catalysis of ORR, with an emphasis on the universal origin of their catalytic mechanisms. The future prospects of the metal-free catalyst were to find precisely controlled doping methods, to explore the role of heteroatoms in the catalysis, and to generate more active catalysts with suitable nanostructure.

Dead-Box Helicase Proteins Disrupt Rna Tertiary Structure Through Helix Capture, Cynthia Pan, Jeffrey P. Potratz, Brian Cannon, Zachary B. Simpson, Jessica L. Ziehr, Pilar Tijerina, Rick Russell

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

DEAD-box helicase proteins accelerate folding and rearrangements of highly structured RNAs and RNA–protein complexes (RNPs) in many essential cellular processes. Although DEAD-box proteins have been shown to use ATP to unwind short RNA helices, it is not known how they disrupt RNA tertiary structure. Here, we use single molecule fluorescence to show that the DEAD-box protein CYT-19 disrupts tertiary structure in a group I intron using a helix capture mechanism. CYT-19 binds to a helix within the structured RNA only after the helix spontaneously loses its tertiary contacts, and then CYT-19 uses ATP to unwind the helix, liberating the product …

Electrochemical Deposition Of Copt Alloy Thin Film And Its Abnormal Infrared Effects, Qing-Song Chen, Guo-Cong Guo, Shi-Gang Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

Nanostructured CoPt alloy thin film was deposited on glassy carbon substrate (denoted as CoPt/GC) under cyclic voltammetric conditions. SEM studies demonstrated that the CoPt/GC was composed of nonuniform nanoparticles with an average size of 139 nm. The composition of the CoPt/GC was analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), which depicts a Co:Pt ratio of ca. 3:5. In situ FTIR spectroscopy employing CO adsorption as a probe reaction revealed that the CoPt/GC exhibits abnormal infrared effects (AIREs). The unique anomalous IR features of CO adsorbed (COad) on CoPt/GC consist in the complete inversion of the COad IR …

On The Origin Of The Errors Of IK As Estimated From K-L Equation In Rotating Disk Electrode System, Wei Chen, Ling-Wen Liao, Zheng-Da He, Yan-Xia Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Rotating disk electrode system is mainly used to study the kinetics of reactions whose reactants have very low solubility in the electrolyte. For an irreversible reaction, Koutecky-Levich equation (K-L Eq.) is frequently used to deduce the kinetic current ik). Since K-L Eq. is derived based on the assumption that a system should conform the steady-state diffusion conditions, the data recoded from the actual system which deviates from such a condition, great error may be induced for the ik estimated. In this work, polarization curves for oxygen reduction reaction at polycrystalline Pt electrode recorded in solutions with various …
