Fabrication Of Pattern Of Graphene Oxide And Au Nanoparticles By Microcontanct Printing Technique, Wen-Hui Pang, Xiao-Jian Xiao, Meng-Wei Ye, Kai-Chao Deng, Jing Tang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by modified Hummers method. Using the GO solution as "ink", Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and GO were transferred to the surface of ITO substrate modified with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES/ITO) in a sequence. The transferred AuNPs and GO could form a uniform and dense composite pattern which was characterized by FE-SEM and AFM. Moreover, using the APTES/ITO substrate surface potential as zero, the sequences of the surface potential were APTES>GO>Au.

Review Of Carbon Materials Energy Storage Mechanism In Lead-Carbon Battery, Le-Ying Wang, Hao Zhang, Chen Hu, Shu-Kai Zhang, Hai-Lei Zhao, Gao-Ping Cao, Wen-Feng Zhang, Yu-Sheng Yang, Xiao-Kang Lai

Journal of Electrochemistry

The traditional lead-acid batteries are mainly used for automobile and various internal combustion engine starting, wireless communication base stations and renewable energy storage; however, their negative plates are easily sulfated under partial-state-of-charge duty, then their charging capacity and cycle life are greatly reduced. Lead-carbon battery is a new type of lead-acid battery, in which a carbon material with high specific surface area and conductivity is added into a negative plate, and has excellent rate discharge performance and higher PSoC cycle life. Lead-carbon battery has a good application prospect in energy storage and hybrid electric vehicle, so these years the study …

Electrochemical And Spectroscopic Studies Of Ethanol Oxidation On Nano-Cubic Pt Modified By Tin Adatoms, Lu Rao, Bin-Wei Zhang, Yan-Yan Li, Yan-Xia Jiang, Shi-Gang Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

The nano-cubic Pt modified by tin (Sn) was synthesized and used to investigate the role of this adatom played in the ethanol oxidation. The onset potential of ethanol oxidation was significantly shifted negatively which can be forward about 300 mV when the coverage of Sn (θSn)was 0.9. The electrtochemical in situ FTIR result demonstrated that the amount of CO2 increased first, and then decreased with θSn increased, and reached the maximun when θSn was 0.38. Furthermore, the formation of acetic acid could be observed at very low potential (-0.05 V) after modifying Sn adatom, and the amount of acetic acid …

Boosting Electrocatalytic Activity Of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene/Carbon Nanotube Composite For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Yu Zhang, Jin-Song Hu, Wen-Jie Jiang, Lin Guo, Zi-Dong Wei, Li-Jun Wan Oct 2014

Boosting Electrocatalytic Activity Of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene/Carbon Nanotube Composite For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Yu Zhang, Jin-Song Hu, Wen-Jie Jiang, Lin Guo, Zi-Dong Wei, Li-Jun Wan

Journal of Electrochemistry

Developing low-cost catalysts with high electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has recently attracted much attention because the sluggish ORR currently limits the performance and commercialization of fuel cells and metal-air batteries as well. Nitrogen doped carbon materials have been considered as a promising candidate for the replacement of high-cost and scarce Pt-based catalysts although their electrocatalytic activity still needs to be much improved. In this work, an improved nitrogen-doped graphene/carbon nanotubes composite (N-rGO/CNT) was developed as an efficient ORR electrocatalyst. It was found that the ORR activity of N-rGO/CNT composite could be significantly enhanced by introducing iron in …

Electrochemical Deposition Of Copt Alloy Thin Film And Its Abnormal Infrared Effects, Qing-Song Chen, Guo-Cong Guo, Shi-Gang Sun Oct 2014

Electrochemical Deposition Of Copt Alloy Thin Film And Its Abnormal Infrared Effects, Qing-Song Chen, Guo-Cong Guo, Shi-Gang Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

Nanostructured CoPt alloy thin film was deposited on glassy carbon substrate (denoted as CoPt/GC) under cyclic voltammetric conditions. SEM studies demonstrated that the CoPt/GC was composed of nonuniform nanoparticles with an average size of 139 nm. The composition of the CoPt/GC was analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), which depicts a Co:Pt ratio of ca. 3:5. In situ FTIR spectroscopy employing CO adsorption as a probe reaction revealed that the CoPt/GC exhibits abnormal infrared effects (AIREs). The unique anomalous IR features of CO adsorbed (COad) on CoPt/GC consist in the complete inversion of the COad IR …

Electrochemistry Of Glucose Oxidase Modified On Porin-Phospholipid Biomimic Membrane, Kun-Qi Wang, Zuo-Ming Zhang, Wei Xing, Chang-Peng Liu, Xing Zhou

Journal of Electrochemistry

Biomimic membrane with nano-channels, which is made up of porin MspA and 1,2-Dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) is constructed on glassy carbon substrate, and glucose oxidase (GOD) is modified on it. The direct electrochemical reaction and electrocatalytic behavior to oxygen and glucose of GOD on the GOD/MspA-DMPC/GC electreode are expounded by the cyclic voltammetric method. The study shows that GOD immobilized on porin MspA and DMPC biomimic membrane displays direct and surface-controlled electrochemical reaction nearby formal potential (E0′) of the flavoprotein active centre (FAD/FADH), and the electrochemical reaction contains two electrons and two protons exchange in 0.1 mmol?L-1 phosphate buffer solution (PBS) …

The lead oxide/graphene/activated carbon (PbO/GN/AC) composite materials were prepared by impregnating commercial activated carbon and graphene in saturated lead nitrate solution followed by calcination. The structures and morphologies of the composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that PbO crystals (about 200 nm) were dispersed uniformly on the surface of activated carbon and graphene. Electrochemical data indicate that the composite exhibited good electrochemical performances. The PbO/GN/AC composite possessed the higher over-potential of hydrogen evolution and the high specific capacitance of 312.6 F·g-1, while the internal resistance …

Collaborative Research: Timing And Structure Of The Last Glacial Maximum And Termination In Southern Peru: Implications For The Role Of The Tropics In Climate Change, Brenda L. Hall Oct 2014

Collaborative Research: Timing And Structure Of The Last Glacial Maximum And Termination In Southern Peru: Implications For The Role Of The Tropics In Climate Change, Brenda L. Hall

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

The role of the tropics in climate change has important implications for understanding both orbital-scale and abrupt climate variations. Yet our ability to assess tropical behavior during major climate events, such as the last glacial maximum (LGM), is limited by poor spatial coverage and insufficient control on sample ages. This project will address this problem by developing well-dated records of glacial fluctuations from the LGM through the termination and late-glacial period at Nevados Coropuna and Allinccapac in southern Peru and use these data in numerical simulations of glacier mass balance and local climate. These sites allow an examination of glacier …

Fate Of The Bose Insulator In The Limit Of Strong Localization And Low Cooper-Pair Density In Ultrathin Films, Shawna M. Hollen, G. E. Fernandes, J. M. Xu, J M. Valles Jr. Oct 2014

Fate Of The Bose Insulator In The Limit Of Strong Localization And Low Cooper-Pair Density In Ultrathin Films, Shawna M. Hollen, G. E. Fernandes, J. M. Xu, J M. Valles Jr.

Physics & Astronomy

A Bose insulator composed of a low density of strongly localized Cooper pairs develops at the two-dimensional superconductor to insulator transition (SIT) in a number of thin film systems. Investigations of ultrathin amorphous PbBi films far from the SIT described here provide evidence that the Bose insulator gives way to a second insulating phase with decreasing film thickness. At a critical film thickness dc the magnetoresistance changes sign from positive, as expected for boson transport, to negative, as expected for fermion transport, signs of local Cooper-pair phase coherence effects on transport vanish, and the transport activation energy exhibits a kink. …

Bicyclists' Uptake Of Traffic-Related Air Pollution: Effects Of The Urban Transportation System, Alexander Y. Bigazzi Oct 2014

Bicyclists' Uptake Of Traffic-Related Air Pollution: Effects Of The Urban Transportation System, Alexander Y. Bigazzi

Dissertations and Theses

While bicyclists and other active travelers obtain health benefits from increased physical activity, they also risk uptake of traffic-related air pollution. But pollution uptake by urban bicyclists is not well understood due to a lack of direct measurements and insufficient analysis of the determinants of exposure and ventilation (breathing). This knowledge gap impedes pollution-conscious transportation planning, design, and health impact assessment.

The research presented in this dissertation generates new connections between transportation system characteristics and pollution uptake by bicyclists. The primary research questions are: 1) how do urban bicyclists' intake and uptake of air pollution vary with roadway and travel …

Eocene-Oligocene Latitudinal Climate Gradients In North America Inferred From Stable Isotope Ratios In Perissodactyl Tooth Enamel, Alessandro Zanazzi, Emily Judd, Andrew Fletcher, Harold Bryant, Matthew J. Kohn

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Eocene-Oligocene transition (~ 34 Ma) was one of the most pronounced episodes of climate change of the Cenozoic. In order to investigate this episode of global climate cooling in North America, we analyzed the carbon and oxygen stable isotope composition of the carbonate component of 19 perissodactyl (horse and rhino) tooth enamel samples from the Eocene-Oligocene rocks of the Cypress Hills Formation (southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada); we then compared the results with previously published data from the US Great Plains (Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming).

Average (± 1σ) perissodactyl enamel δ13C values (vs. V-PDB) in the Eocene (-8.8 …

Physics: Rethinking The Foundations, Kevin H. Knuth Oct 2014

Physics: Rethinking The Foundations, Kevin H. Knuth

Physics Faculty Scholarship

Physics is traditionally conceived of as a set of laws that universally governs the behavior of physical systems. These laws, however they are decreed, are believed to govern the behavior of not only everything in the universe, but the form of the universe itself. However, this traditional concept of physics as a universal governance is at odds with our modern theories of quantum mechanics and relativity, which place the observer and information in a central role. In this talk, I aim to rethink the foundations and attempt to build physics from the bottom up based on a very simple foundational …

Online Resource Platform For Mathematics Education, Marisa Llorens, Edmund Nevin, Eileen Mageean

Conference papers

Engineering education is facing many challenges: a decline in core mathematical skills; lowering entry requirements; and the diversity of the student cohort. One approach to confronting these challenges is to make subject content appropriate to the communication styles of today’s student. To achieve this, a pedagogical shift from the traditional hierarchical approach to learning to one that embraces the use of technology as a tool to enhance the student learning experience is required. By including the student as co-creator of course content, a greater sense of engagement is achieved and a change to one where students become agents of their …

Groundwater Controls On Physical And Chemical Processes In Streamside Wetlands And Headwater Streams In The Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, Michael Kroh Callahan Oct 2014

Groundwater Controls On Physical And Chemical Processes In Streamside Wetlands And Headwater Streams In The Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, Michael Kroh Callahan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For this dissertation I studied groundwater and surface water interactions in the Kenai Lowlands, Alaska. In particular, I examine two important aspects of groundwater and surface water interactions: 1) Groundwater's influence on surface-water temperature; and 2) Groundwater's role in forming hydrologic flow paths that can connect uplands to streamside wetlands and streams. Chapter 2 investigates the controls on stream temperature in salmon-bearing headwater streams in two common hydrogeologic settings: 1) drainage-ways, which are low-gradient streams that flow through broad valleys; and 2) discharge-slopes, which are high gradient streams that flow through narrow valleys. The results from chapter 2 showed significant …

The Analysis Of Muonium Hyperfine Interaction Measurements Of Thermal Rate Constants For Addition Reactions, Ronald Duchovic, A Wagner, R Turner, D Garner, D Fleming

Ronald J. Duchovic

A new model is developed for the analysis of muon spin relaxation (mu-SR) measurements of muonium (Mu) reaction rates with other chemical species. The kinetics component of the model is specifically developed for addition reactions but can be extended to direct reactions. The polarization component of the model assumes that the adduct formed possesses a single, effective spin precession frequency. The complete model is solved to obtain an analytic expression for the mu-SR signal as a function of time. Both a time-ordered sequence method and a Boltzmann spin equation method give equivalent solutions. These solutions are analyzed under various kinetic …

Teaching College General Chemistry: Techniques Designed To Communicate A Conceptual Framework, Ronald Duchovic Oct 2014

Teaching College General Chemistry: Techniques Designed To Communicate A Conceptual Framework, Ronald Duchovic

Ronald J. Duchovic

General chemistry at the college level is often perceived as a major hurdle by typical undergraduates. Both Freshmen and more advanced students undertake courses in general chemistry either ill-prepared or convinced that the subject matter is beyond their comprehension. With the exception of potential chemistry majors, the vast majority of general chemistry students enter the class simply to satisfy a graduation requirement of their degree program. Consequently, instructors must both communicate an understanding of the subject matter and overcome major barriers to the learning process itself. This paper discusses two techniques which have been utilized for five semesters in general …
