The Relationship Between Environmental Factors And Cyanobacteria Population In Lake Bloomington And Evergreen Lake In Mclean County, Illinois, Matthew Douglas Meyers

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates cyanobacteria on two lakes in McLean County, Illinois from the months of August to October. Data was collected every other week.Cyanobacteria are prokaryotes that may be unicellular, colonial or filamentous in form. These cells can be known to be toxic or non-toxic. The factors that control the reproduction of cyanobacteria are the temperature and nutrients of nitrogen and phosphorus. These microorganisms are located in marine and terrestrial settings worldwide. The focus of this study was at two man-made lakes which are Lake Bloomington and Lake Evergreen. Sampling and collection of data was done on two lakes to …

Evidence Of Large Scale Tectonic Processes On The Tharsis Rise, Mars, Genevieve Kidman, John S. Maclean, David Maxwell Oct 2014

Evidence Of Large Scale Tectonic Processes On The Tharsis Rise, Mars, Genevieve Kidman, John S. Maclean, David Maxwell

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

Past observations of Mars have led scientists to believe that tectonic kinematics stopped early in its planetary development. Recent exploration of Mars has led to new theories that support an active tectonic regime on the Tharsis rise. With the advancement of new satellite imagery and technologies such as Thermal Emission Imaging System, High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment satellite imagery, the Mars Orbital Laser Altimeter, and interactive software such as J-Mars and Esri GIS, we have identified additional large-scale surface features in the Tharsis Rise and surrounding areas. Large-scale Martian lineations, folds, and conjugate joints can be compared to similar structures …

Background

Although funding has supported the scale up of routine, opt-out HIV testing in the US, variance in implementation mechanisms and barriers in high-burden jurisdictions remains unknown.

Methods

We conducted a survey of health care organizations in Washington, DC and Houston/Harris County to determine number of HIV tests completed in 2011, policy and practices associated with HIV testing, funding mechanisms, and reported barriers to testing in each jurisdiction and to compare results between jurisdictions.

Results

In 2012, 43 Houston and 35 DC HIV-testing organizations participated in the survey. Participants represented 85% of Department of Health-supported testers in DC and 90% …

Drilling The Solid Earth: Global Geodynamic Cycles And Earth Evolution, John W. Shervais, Nicholas Arndt, Kathryn M. Goodenough Oct 2014

Drilling The Solid Earth: Global Geodynamic Cycles And Earth Evolution, John W. Shervais, Nicholas Arndt, Kathryn M. Goodenough

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The physical and chemical evolution of the Earth is driven by geodynamic cycles that are global in scale, operating over 4.57 Ga of Earth’s history. Some processes are truly cyclic, e.g., the Wilson Cycle, while others are irreversible (e.g., core formation). Heat and mass transfer between the lowermost mantle (e.g., core-mantle boundary) and the surface drives these global geodynamic processes. Subduction of lithospheric plates transfers cool fractionated material into the lower mantle and leads indirectly to the formation of new oceanic lithosphere, while the rise of thermochemical plumes recycles the remnants of these plates back to the surface, driven by …

Context-Aware Spelling Corrector For Sentiment Analysis, Dr. Muhammad Zubair Asghar, Fazal Masud Kundi

Dr. Muhammad Zubair Asghar

One of the most thrived features of the Web 2.0 era is the fastest growing of user-generated content in the shape of blogs and reviews, with unmatched speed and size. These reviews contain poor, text quality and structure which results spelling mistakes as well as out-of-vocabulary words. This paper presents a Context-Aware Spelling Corrector for Sentiment Analysis based on similarity measures and statistical language model. The paper also presents some compelling statistics about spelling errors. The comparative results show that the proposed framework outperforms the related systems, features wise and in accuracy.

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Modern spectral synthesis codes need the thermally averaged free–free Gaunt factor defined over a very wide range of parameter space in order to produce an accurate prediction for the spectrum emitted by an ionized plasma. Until now no set of data exists that would meet this need in a fully satisfactory way. We have therefore undertaken to produce a table of very accurate non-relativistic Gaunt factors over a much wider range of parameters than has ever been produced before. We first produced a table of non-averaged Gaunt factors, covering the parameter space 10log ϵi = −20 to +10 …

A Bijective Proof Of A Factorization Formula For Specialized Macdonald Polynomials, Nicholas A. Loehr, Elizabeth Niese Oct 2014

A Bijective Proof Of A Factorization Formula For Specialized Macdonald Polynomials, Nicholas A. Loehr, Elizabeth Niese

Elizabeth Niese

Let μ and ν = (ν 1, . . . , ν k ) be partitions such that μ is obtained from ν by adding m parts of sizer. Descouens and Morita proved algebraically that the modified Macdonald polynomials H~μ(X;q,t) satisfy the identity H~μ=H~νH~(rm) when the parameter t is specialize to an mth root of unity. Descouens, Morita, and Numata proved this formula bijectively when r ≤ ν k and r∈{1,2}. This note gives a bijective proof of the formula for all r ≤ ν k .

New Combinatorial Formulations Of The Shuffle Conjecture, Nicholas A. Loehr, Elizabeth Niese Oct 2014

New Combinatorial Formulations Of The Shuffle Conjecture, Nicholas A. Loehr, Elizabeth Niese

Elizabeth Niese

The shuffle conjecture (due to Haglund, Haiman, Loehr, Remmel, and Ulyanov) provides a combinatorial formula for the Frobenius series of the diagonal harmonics module DHn, which is the symmetric function∇(en). This formula is a sum over all labeled Dyck paths of terms built from combinatorial statistics called area, dinv, and IDes. We provide three new combinatorial formulations of the shuffle conjecture based on other statistics on labeled paths, parking functions, and related objects. Each such reformulation arises by introducing an appropriate new definition of the inverse descent set. Analogous results are proved for the higher-order shuffle conjecture involving ∇m(en). We …

A New Recursion For Three-Column Combinatorial Macdonald Polynomials, Elizabeth Niese Oct 2014

A New Recursion For Three-Column Combinatorial Macdonald Polynomials, Elizabeth Niese

Elizabeth Niese

The Hilbert series of the Garsia–Haiman module Mμ can be described combinatorially as the generating function of certain fillings of the Ferrers diagram of μ where μ is an integer partition of n . Since there are n ! fillings that generate , it is desirable to find recursions to reduce the number of fillings that need to be considered when computing combinatorially. In this paper, we present a combinatorial recursion for the case where μ is an n by 3 rectangle. This allows us to reduce the number of fillings under consideration from (3n)! to (3n)!/(3!nn!).

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

This work presents iron isotope data in the western equatorial Pacific. Marine aerosols and top core margin sediments display a slightly heavy Fe isotopic composition (δ56Fe) of 0.33 ± 0.11‰ (2SD) and 0.14 ± 0.07‰, respectively. Samples reflecting the influence of Papua New Guinea runoff (Sepik River and Rabaul volcano water) are characterized by crustal values. In seawater, Fe is mainly supplied in the particulate form and is found with a δ56Fe between −0.49 and 0.34 ± 0.07‰. The particulate Fe seems to be brought mainly by runoff and transported across continental shelves and slopes. …

Despite staggering investments made in unraveling the human genome, current estimates suggest that as much as 90% of the variance in cancer and chronic diseases can be attributed to factors outside an individual’s genetic endowment, particularly to environmental exposures experienced across his or her life course. New analytical approaches are clearly required as investigators turn to complicated systems theory and ecological, place-based and life-history perspectives in order to understand more clearly the relationships between social determinants, environmental exposures and health disparities. While traditional data analysis techniques remain foundational to health disparities research, they are easily overwhelmed by the ever-increasing size …

Constraints On Very High Energy Emission From Grb 130427a, P. T. Reynolds, Et Al

Physical Sciences Publications

Prompt emission from the very fluent and nearby (z = 0.34) gamma-ray burst GRB 130427A was detected by several orbiting telescopes and by ground-based, wide-field-of-view optical transient monitors. Apart from the intensity and proximity of this GRB, it is exceptional due to the extremely long-lived high-energy (100 MeV to 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission, which was detected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope for ~70 ks after the initial burst. The persistent, hard-spectrum, high-energy emission suggests that the highest-energy gamma rays may have been produced via synchrotron self-Compton processes though there is also evidence that …

The radiomillisecond pulsar J1713+0747 is regarded as one of the highest-precision clocks in the sky and is regularly timed for the purpose of detecting gravitational waves. The International Pulsar Timing Array Collaboration undertook a 24 hr global observation of PSR J1713+0747 in an effort to better quantify sources of timing noise in this pulsar, particularly on intermediate (1.24 hr) timescales. We observed the pulsar continuously over 24 hr with the Arecibo, Effelsberg, GMRT, Green Bank, LOFAR, Lovell, Nancay, Parkes, and WSRT radio telescopes. The combined pulse times-of-arrival presented here provide an estimate of what sources of timing noise, excluding DM …

Public concern resulting from unconventional coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and production has become a contentious planning issue in regional Australia, with public concern drawing attention to government planning obligations. To assist Lismore City Council (Northern New South Wales) in its deliberations on the topic, a referendum-style poll on the issue of CSG industry development was held in conjunction with the local government elections of September 2012. The poll question, ‘Do you support CSG exploration and production in the Lismore City Council area?’, elicited a poll response rate of 97% of eligible voters, of which 87% voted ‘no’. This paper …
