Understanding Intelligent Systems, Tamara Kneese Oct 2014

Understanding Intelligent Systems, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

Science fiction has long imagined a workforce reshaped by robots, but the increasingly common instantiation of intelligent systems in business is much more mundane. Beyond the utopian and dystopian hype of increased efficiencies and job displacement, how do we understand what disruptions intelligent systems will have on the workforce?

We synthesize and study single crystals of the layered honeycomb lattice Mott insulators Na2RuO3 and Li2RuO3 with magnetic Ru4+(4d4) ions. The newly found Na2RuO3 features a nearly ideal honeycomb lattice and orders antiferromagnetically at 30 K. Single crystals of Li2RuO3 adopt a honeycomb lattice with either C2/m or more distorted P21/m below 300 K, depending on detailed synthesis conditions. We find that Li2RuO3 in both structures hosts a well-defined magnetic state, in contrast to …

Model For Ultrashort Laser-Pulse Induced Ionization Dynamics In Transparent Solids, Jeremy R. Gulley, Thomas E. Lanier Oct 2014

Model For Ultrashort Laser-Pulse Induced Ionization Dynamics In Transparent Solids, Jeremy R. Gulley, Thomas E. Lanier

Faculty Articles

A comprehensive model of ultrafast laser-induced plasma generation intended for coupling with pulse propagation simulations in transparent solids is introduced. It simultaneously accounts for the changing spectrum of a propagating ultrashort laser pulse while coupling to the evolution of the energy-resolved nonequilibrium free-carrier distribution. The presented results indicate that strong pulse chirps lead to ionization dynamics that are not captured by the standard monochromatic treatment of laser-induced plasma formation. These results have strong implications for ultrafast laser-solid applications that depend on ionization in a strong nonlinear focus.

The binding of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) to synthetic nano-magnetie particles synthesized under open vessel conditions and a microwave assisted hydrothermal synthesis techniques was investigated. Batch studies showed that the binding of both the Cr(III) and Cr(VI) bound to the nano-materials in a pH dependent manner. The Cr(III) maximized at binding at pH 4 and 100% binding. Similarly, the Cr(VI) ions showed a maximum binding of 100% at pH 4. The data from the time dependency studies showed for the most part the majority of the binding occurred within the first 5 minutes of contact with the nanomaterial and remained constant …

Epa's Proposed Greenhouse Gas Regulation For Power Plants: How Does It Work And What Will It Mean For Nevada?, Adele C. Morris

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

In June, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed important new limits on carbon dioxide emissions from existing U.S. power plants. The new regulation is the centerpiece of the Obama Administration’s climate policy. If the controversial rule is finalized as planned next year, it will cover about a third of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. This lecture will explain the legal, environmental, and economic issues posed by the rule and highlight the important role for states in implementing it. The lecture will also review the implications and options for achieving the emissions target the EPA set for Nevada.

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this study, a manganese oxide, Mn3O4 was used to remove chromium(III) and chromium(VI) from aqueous solutions. The Mn3O4 nanomaterial was synthesized through a precipitation method, and was characterized using XRD, which confirmed the material had a crystal structure similar to hausmannite. In addition, using Scherrer's equation it was determined that the nanomaterial had an average grain size of 19.5 ± 1.10 nm. A study of the effects of pH on the binding of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) showed that the optimum binding pH was 4 and 3 respectively. Batch isotherm studies were performed to determine the binding capacity of chromium(III), …

Complex Band Structure Of Topologically Protected Edge States, Xiaoqian Dang, John D. Burton, Alan Kalitsov, Julian P. Velev, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

One of the great successes of modern condensed matter physics is the discovery of topological insulators (TIs). A thorough investigation of their properties could bring such materials from fundamental research to potential applications. Here, we report on theoretical investigations of the complex band structure (CBS) of two-dimensional (2D) TIs. We utilize the tight-binding form of the Bernevig, Hughes, and Zhang model as a prototype for a generic 2D TI. Based on this model, we outline the conditions that the CBS must satisfy in order to guarantee the presence of topologically protected edge states. Furthermore, we use the Green’s function technique …

Mechanics Of Large Folds In Thin Interfacial Films, Vincent Demery, Benny Davidovitch, Christian D. Santangelo Oct 2014

Mechanics Of Large Folds In Thin Interfacial Films, Vincent Demery, Benny Davidovitch, Christian D. Santangelo

Benny Davidovitch

A thin film at a liquid interface responds to uniaxial confinement by wrinkling and then by folding; its shape and energy have been computed exactly before self contact. Here, we address the mechanics of large folds, i.e. folds that absorb a length much larger than the wrinkle wavelength. With scaling arguments and numerical simulations, we show that the antisymmetric fold is energetically favorable and can absorb any excess length at zero pressure. Then, motivated by puzzles arising in the comparison of this simple model to experiments on lipid monolayers and capillary rafts, we discuss how to incorporate film weight, selfadhesion …

Semi-Fredholm Solvability In The Framework Of Singular Solutions For The (3+1)-D Protter-Morawetz Problem, Nedyu Popivanov, Todor Popov, Allen Tesdall

Publications and Research

For the four-dimensional nonhomogeneous wave equation boundary value problems that are multidimensional analogues of Darboux problems in the plane are studied. It is known that for smooth right-hand side functions the unique generalized solution may have a strong power-type singularity at only one point. This singularity is isolated at the vertex of the boundary light characteristic cone and does not propagate along the bicharacteristics. The present paper describes asymptotic expansions of the generalized solutions in negative powers of the distance to . Some necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of bounded solutions are proven and additionally a priori estimates for …

A Surface Chemistry Study Of The Effects Of Zinc Sulphate On Sphalerite During Flotation Separation At The Laronde Mine, Dennis M. Laliberty

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The LaRonde mine is a gold-rich VMS deposit in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt of Canada. Like many polymetallic ore deposits, loss of sphalerite occurs during the Cu circuit of flotation separation at the mill. Zinc sulphate was tested as a sphalerite depressant. XRD, TOF-SIMS and XPS were used to examine the mineralogy and surface chemistry of ore samples collected at select stages of the milling process in the mill and in the laboratory. Data analyses showed that ZnSO4 likely promotes sulphoxyl and hydroxide adsorption to the sphalerite surface inhibiting Cu activation. Addition of ZnSO4 in the LaRonde mill has reduced …
