Essays On International Economics In Presence Of Economics Of Scale And Monopolistic Competition., Rajit Biswas Dr. Aug 2015

Essays On International Economics In Presence Of Economics Of Scale And Monopolistic Competition., Rajit Biswas Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Trade theorists, have generally been concerned with three basic questions: Why do countries engage in trade? What is the pattern of trade? and What are the gains from trade? These questions have remained the focal point of inquiry from the times of Adam Smith till the present day. The first two questions inquire, respectively about the causes of trade, and if trade indeed takes place, then about the pattern of specialization of each country in the post trade situation. These are thus questions of positive economics. The third point of inquiry is normative. This is because, gains and losses from …

Cover Crop Biomass Production And Water Use In The Central Great Plains, David C. Nielsen, Drew J. Lyon, Gary W. Hergert, Robert K. Higgins, Johnathon D. Holman Aug 2015

Cover Crop Biomass Production And Water Use In The Central Great Plains, David C. Nielsen, Drew J. Lyon, Gary W. Hergert, Robert K. Higgins, Johnathon D. Holman

David C. Nielsen

The water-limited environment of the semiarid Central Great Plains may not produce enough cover crop biomass to generate benefits associated with cover crop use in more humid regions. There have been reports that cover crops grown in mixtures produce more biomass with greater water use efficiency than single-species plantings. This study was conducted to determine differences in cover crop biomass production, water use efficiency, and residue cover between a mixture and single-species plantings. The study was conducted at Akron, CO, and Sidney, NE, during the 2012 and 2013 growing seasons under both rainfed and irrigated conditions. Water use, biomass, and …

Metabolic Demands Of Elliptigo Cycling Compared To Running, Alex Mcbride, Kyle R. Barnes Phd Aug 2015

Metabolic Demands Of Elliptigo Cycling Compared To Running, Alex Mcbride, Kyle R. Barnes Phd

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

ElliptiGO cycling is a new form of exercise; the metabolic demands, however, have not been investigated. In a cross-over design, 17 runners completed 5×3 min stages while either cycling on a stationary ElliptiGO or running on a treadmill during which HR, RPE, and expired gases were collected using a portable metabolic analyzer. Subjects increased one gear or 1 mph every 3 min during cycling or running respectively. A 10 min recovery between modes of exercise was given. For each testing intensity, metabolic demand (VO2), HR, and VE was significantly higher during running (p < 0.05), however the RPE for each intensity was similar (p > 0.05). There was a linear relationship between …

As part of our ongoing effort to investigate transit timing variations (TTVs) of known exoplanets, we monitored transits of the four exoplanets HAT-P-18b, HAT-P-19b, HAT-P-27b/WASP-40b and WASP-21b. All of them are suspected to show TTVs due to the known properties of their host systems based on the respective discovery papers. During the past three years 46 transit observations were carried out, mostly using telescopes of the Young Exoplanet Transit Initiative. The analyses are used to refine the systems’ orbital parameters. In all cases we found no hints for significant TTVs, or changes in the system parameters inclination, fractional stellar radius …

Reconstructing Late Holocene Hydrographic Variability Of The Gulf Of Maine, Nina Millicent Whitney Aug 2015

Reconstructing Late Holocene Hydrographic Variability Of The Gulf Of Maine, Nina Millicent Whitney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I present an annually resolved reconstruction of seawater temperatures in the

western North Atlantic from 1695-1915. This paleoclimate record was constructed

using oxygen isotopes measured in precisely dated Arctica islandica shells collected

off of Seguin Island in the western Gulf of Maine. The temperature reconstruction

was derived from this oxygen isotope time series using a modern d18Ow-salinity

mixing line developed for coastal waters in the Gulf of Maine from water samples

collected over the last decade. The d18Ow and salinity composition of these water

samples indicate that coastal surface waters consist of a …

Method Development For Vitamin C Quantification In Two Complex Matrices, Hannah D. Hutt Aug 2015

Method Development For Vitamin C Quantification In Two Complex Matrices, Hannah D. Hutt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The following liquid chromatographic (LC) method developments and applied research studies were done using two complex food matrices, potatoes and elderberries, which are common to the state of Maine. Potatoes are Maine’s largest agricultural crop, a staple food in most U.S. households, and are, from an analytical standpoint, considered a complex matrix due to the high starch content that can be difficult to remove without degrading or removing nutrients in the process. Elderberries are an emerging crop in the U.S. because of their antioxidant and anti-viral properties and are found growing wild, throughout Maine. Elderberries are also considered a complex …

Detection Of Iron (Iii) Using Magnetic Nanoparticles, Kaiya Hansen Aug 2015

Detection Of Iron (Iii) Using Magnetic Nanoparticles, Kaiya Hansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this work was to develop an iron (III) sensor which can be mounted on buoys and gliders and automatically measure iron (III) in the ocean. The method investigated in this thesis was based on anchoring the iron (III) chelator desferrioxamine B (DFB) to magnetic particles. DFB selectively binds iron (III), resulting in a complex which produces a broad absorbance band at 430 nm. This band can be measured via UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-Vis). However, measuring oceanic iron (III) directly in solution is difficult because the concentrations can be very low, sometimes less than 1 nM. This problem could …

Characterization Of Cd93 Diffusion In Human Monocytes And Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells., Maria Goiko Aug 2015

Characterization Of Cd93 Diffusion In Human Monocytes And Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells., Maria Goiko

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The diffusion of CD93, a putative efferocytic receptor, was studied in the membrane of human monocytes and CHO cells using single particle tracking. We found that of CD93 molecules were confined in compartments consistent with actin corrals, while moved freely. Cage effect analysis showed short-lived caging of free CD93 and longer-lasting caging of confined CD93, with smaller corrals resulting in stronger caging. The motion of both free and confined CD93 was found to be consistent with a subdiffusive continuous time random walk, suggesting that CD93 diffusion is affected by several processes. We also sought to develop a total internal reflection …
