Tropical cyclone (TC) or typhoon wind hazard and risk are significant for China. The return period value of the maximum typhoon wind speed is used to characterize the typhoon wind hazard and assign wind load in building design code. Since the historical surface observations of typhoon wind speed are often scarce and of short period, the typhoon wind hazard assessment is often carried out using the wind field model and TC track model. We provide an analytic read-through of Richard Dedekind's 1901 article “Über die Permutationen des Körpers aller algebraischen Zahlen," describing the principal results concerning infinite Galois theory from both Dedekind's point of view and a modern perspective, noting an apparently uncorrected error in the supplement to the article in the Collected Works. As there is no published English-language translation of the article, we provide an annotated original translation.

The concepts of completely monotone and Bernstein functions have been introduced near one hundred years ago. They find wide applications in areas ranging from stochastic L\'{e}vy processes and complex analysis to monotone operator theory. They have well-known Bernstein and L\'{e}vy-Khintchine integral representations through which there are one-to-one correspondences between them and Radon measures on $[0,\infty)$ or $(0,\infty)$, respectively. In this thesis, we investigate subclasses of completely monotone and Bernstein functions with various convexity properties on their measures. These subclasses have intriguing applications in probability theories and convex analysis.

Measurements of the particulate beam attenuation coefficient at multiple wavelengths in the ocean typically exhibit a power law dependence on wavelength, and the slope of that power law has been related to the slope of the particle size distribution (PSD), when assumed to be a power law function of particle size. Recently, spectral backscattering coefficient measurements have been made using sensors deployed at moored observatories, on autonomous underwater vehicles, and even retrieved from space-based measurements of remote sensing reflectance. The consequences of anthropogenic climate change are extensively debated through scientific papers, newspaper articles, and blogs. Newspaper articles may lack accuracy, while the severity of findings in scientific papers may be too opaque for the public to understand. Social media, however, is a forum where individuals of diverse backgrounds can share their thoughts and opinions. As consumption shifts from old media to new, Twitter has become a valuable resource for analyzing current events and headline news. To measure the stellar and orbital properties of the metal-poor RS CVn binary o Draconis (o Dra), we directly detect the companion using interferometric observations obtained with the Michigan InfraRed Combiner at Georgia State University's Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) Array. The H-band flux ratio between the primary and secondary stars is the highest confirmed flux ratio (370 ± 40) observed with long-baseline optical interferometry. Irrigated agriculture is placing increasing pressure on finite freshwater resources, especially in developing countries, where water extraction is often unregulated, un-priced and even subsidized. To shift agriculture to a more sustainable use of water without harming the food security and livelihoods of hundreds of millions of smallholders, substantial improvements of water use efficiency will be required. Here, we use detailed hydroclimatic and agricultural data to estimate the potential for the widespread adoption of efficient irrigation technologies to halt the depletion of India's groundwater resources. We have observed the Virgo Cluster spiral galaxy, NGC 4845, at 1.6 and 6 GHz using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, as part of the Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies—an EVLA Survey (CHANG-ES). The source consists of a bright unresolved core with a surrounding weak central disk (1.8 kpc diameter). The core is variable over the 6 month timescale of the CHANG-ES data and has increased by a factor of ≈6 since 1995. The wide bandwidths of CHANG-ES have allowed us to determine the spectral evolution of this core, which peaks between 1.6 and 6 GHz (it is …

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an important class of porous materials, owing to their potential applications in a variety of areas, including gas storage, molecular separations, catalysis, sensors and so on. Coronal mass ejection (CME)-shock compression of the dayside magnetopause has been observed to cause both prompt enhancement of radiation belt electron flux due to inward radial transport of electrons conserving their first adiabatic invariant and prompt losses which at times entirely eliminate the outer zone. Recent numerical studies suggest that enhanced ultra-low frequency (ULF) wave activity is necessary to explain electron losses deeper inside the magnetosphere than magnetopause incursion following CME-shock arrival. A combination of radial transport and magnetopause shadowing can account for losses observed at radial distances into L=4.5, well within the computed magnetopause location. We compare ULF wave …

Grammar-based testing has interested the academic community for decades, but little work has been done with regards to testing with invalid input strings. For our research, we generated LR parse tables from grammars. We then generated valid and invalid strings based on coverage of these tables. We evaluated the effectiveness of these strings in terms of code coverage and fault detection by inputting them to subject programs which accept input based on the grammars. The Upper Devonian Kettle Point Formation of southwestern Ontario consists of interbedded organic-rich black shales and organic-poor greyish green mudstones and red beds, the distribution of which were controlled by water depth, primary productivity, paleoclimate, and tectonism associated with the concurrent Acadian orogeny. Black shales were deposited under anoxic conditions and represent the background deposition. Less abundant organic-poor lithologies were formed under dysoxic to oxic conditions caused by a drop in relative sea level (either eustatic or related to subsidence or uplift). Ochratoxin A (OTA) and fumonisin are mycotoxins produced by black Aspergilli that contaminate wine in many countries around the world. Both OTA and fumonisins are possible carcinogens to humans. There is limited data about the occurrence of OTA and fumonisins in Canadian vineyards. Therefore, a survey of the black Aspergilli from 2012-2014 has been conducted. In the mycotoxin study, high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to screen and quantify OTA and fumonisins from both black Aspergilli isolated on artificial media and grape samples. Quantitative T1 maps estimate T1 relaxation times and can be used to assess diffuse tissue abnormalities within normal-appearing tissue. T1 maps are popular for studying the progression and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, their inclusion in standard imaging protocols remains limited due to the additional scanning time and expert calibration required and susceptibility to bias and noise. Background: Dual-specificity phosphatase-5 (DUSP5) plays a central role in vascular development and disease. We present a p-nitrophenol phosphate (pNPP) based enzymatic assay to screen for inhibitors of the phosphatase domain of DUSP5.

Methods: pNPP is a mimic of the phosphorylated tyrosine on the ERK2 substrate (pERK2) and binds the DUSP5 phosphatase domain with a Km of 7.6 ± 0.4 mM. Docking followed by inhibitor verification using the pNPP assay identified a series of polysulfonated aromatic inhibitors that occupy the DUSP5 active site in the region that is likely occupied by the dual-phosphorylated ERK2 substrate tripeptide (pThr-Glu-pTyr). Methods for C-C, C-X and C-H bond formation and cleavage are exploited throughout the areas of fine chemicals synthesis, with major applications for pharmaceuticals. In recent years, degradable polymers have become increasingly researched for their applications in drug delivery systems, adhesives, and tissue engineering. Self-immolative polymers (SIPs) are of particular utility due to predictable end-to-end backbone depolymerization after a stimuli-responsive end-cap cleavage. There are examples of incorporating a hydrophobic SIP into an amphiphilic block-copolymer, followed by self-assembly in aqueous media forming various nanoparticle morphologies. Soil water potential (Ψ) controls the dynamics of water in soils and can therefore affect greenhouse gas fluxes. We examined the relationship between soil moisture content (θ) at five different levels of water potential (Ψ = 0, −0.05, −0.1, −0.33 and −15 bar) and greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide, CO2; nitrous oxide, N2O and methane, CH4) fluxes. An effective, integrated telemedicine system has been developed that allows (a) teleconsultation between local primary health care providers (primary care physicians and general radiologists) and remote imaging subspecialists and (b) active patient participation related to his or her medical condition and patient education. The initial stage of system development was a traditional teleradiology consultation service between general radiologists and specialists; this established system was expanded to include primary care physicians and patients. Moving from a set of independent virtual worlds to an integrated network of 3D virtual worlds or Metaverse rests on progress in four areas: immersive realism, ubiquity of access and identity, interoperability, and scalability. For each area, the current status and needed developments in order to achieve a functional Metaverse are described. Factors that support the formation of a viable Metaverse, such as institutional and popular interest and ongoing improvements in hardware performance, and factors that constrain the achievement of this goal, including limits in computational methods and unrealized collaboration among virtual world stakeholders and developers, are also considered.

In traditional radiology practice, reports are typically dictated and then transcribed.? While the free-text reports represent the semantic knowledge interpreted and conveyed by a physician, the information can be hard to access. The advantages of representing medical data in a structured format using standard terminology are clearly recognized. These include the ability to implement a standardized electronic medical record, automatically invoke medical guidelines when appropriate, and conduct outcomes research. Standard structured reports facilitate intelligent indexing, searching, and retrieval of documents from clinical databases. Recent attempts have been made in the industry to enable structured data entry using preformatted templates, but …
