Investigation Of The Resistance To Demagnetization In Bulk Rare-Earth Magnets Comprised Of Crystallographically-Aligned, Single-Domain Crystallites With Modified Intergranular Phase, Jie Li Jan 2016

Investigation Of The Resistance To Demagnetization In Bulk Rare-Earth Magnets Comprised Of Crystallographically-Aligned, Single-Domain Crystallites With Modified Intergranular Phase, Jie Li

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The research presented in this dissertation investigates whether an increased coercivity of Neodymium-Iron-Boron (Nd2Fe14B) based bulk magnets at elevated temperature (160°C), which is now only obtainable by substituting ~7wt% dysprosium (Dy) for a portion of neodymium (Nd), can be achieved through specific microstructural modifications with decreased Dy concentrations. The approach is to reduce the size of individual crystallographically-aligned grains in the magnet so that each grain can only support a single magnetic domain and to simultaneously dilute the Nd-Fe inter-granular phase present in conventional magnets with a non-Fe-containing, Nd-rich phase (Nd-Cu alloy) in an attempt to partially magnetically isolate the …

Numerical Modeling Of Ambient Noise Seismic Interferometry, Simisola M. Arogundade Jan 2016

Numerical Modeling Of Ambient Noise Seismic Interferometry, Simisola M. Arogundade

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

CO2 sequestration involves storing CO2 in a deep geological formation and may help to mitigate the increasing emission of carbon. To monitor the migration of injected fluid in the reservoir, seismic observations may be used to observe changes in reflection character. Conventional methods to image the subsurface, using active seismic measurements, with man-made sources, have been applied at a few test sites, and the use of passive measurements, with natural sources, has been considered as a probable cost-efficient method to monitor CO2 migration and leakage. This numerical modeling study examines the use of seismic interferometry to retrieve …

Comparisons Of Seismic Interferometry By Cross Correlation, Deconvolution, And Cross Coherence, Haitao Cao

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Ambient noise seismic interferometry (ANSI) has been applied widely for geophysical investigations including earthquake tomography, civil engineering and seismic exploration purposes. Comparing this approach with the traditional active seismic survey, the application of ANSI is cost effective, environmentally friendly and easily repeatable. Conventional seismic interferometry by cross correlating wavefields recorded at different receivers has already obtained fruitful results.

Even though the application of seismic interferometry (SI) by cross correlation has been successful, different methods for the processing workflow such as cross coherence and deconvolution have been conducted in an effort to improve the resolution. While these three methods have been …

Cave Detection Using Seismic Methods At Madison Blue Spring State Park, Madison County, Florida, Charles Breithaupt

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Locating caves and quantifying their geometries has significant importance in aquifer characterization, sinkhole mitigation, and contaminant transport monitoring. Several geophysical methods have been used for cave detection with limited success, but no reliable solution has been found. New developments in seismic techniques, however, show promising results indicating that cave voids may be more accurately detected.

We evaluated the capability of several seismic techniques to detect caves by collecting new seismic data over a known conduit connected to Madison Blue Spring, in northern Florida. These analyses validated the abilities of diffracted surface waves to detect water-filled caves by viewing these data …

Spectrophotometric Analysis Of Urinary Iodine In 18-22 Year-Old Women In Central Minnesota, Haley Chatelaine Jan 2016

Spectrophotometric Analysis Of Urinary Iodine In 18-22 Year-Old Women In Central Minnesota, Haley Chatelaine

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Iodine is an overlooked but incredibly important micronutrient, especially with regard to early fetus development. The United States does not mandate salt iodization, so widely consumed processed foods are not likely to contain iodized salt, which may potentially put the population at risk for developing iodine deficiencies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to correspond iodine intake to iodine status and establish effective methods for determining a relationship between the two. Subjects (n=23) completed a food survey and supplied 50mL urine samples to compare an estimated average daily iodine intake based on foods over the course of a week …

Reactivity Of (3-Methylpentadienyl)Iron(1+) Cation: Late-Stage Introduction Of A (3-Methyl-2z,4-Pentadien-1-Yl) Side Chain, Subhabrata Chaudhury, Shukun Li, William A. Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The 3-methyl-2Z,4-pentadien-1-yl sidechain is found in various sesquiterpenes and diterpenes. A route for the late stage introduction of this functionality was developed which relies on nucleophilic attack on the (3-methylpentadienyl)iron(1+) cation, followed by oxidative decomplexation. This methodology was applied to the synthesis of the proposed structure of heteroscyphic acid A methyl ester. Realization of this synthesis led to a correction of the proposed structure.

Sol-Gel Assembly Of Metal Nanostructures Into Metallic Gel Frameworks And Their Applications, Xiaonan Gao Jan 2016

Sol-Gel Assembly Of Metal Nanostructures Into Metallic Gel Frameworks And Their Applications, Xiaonan Gao

Theses and Dissertations

The advent of nanoscience and nanotechnology has sparked many research forefronts in the creation of materials with control over size, shape, composition, and surface properties.1,2 However, for most of the applications, nanoscale materials need to be assembled into functional nanostructures that exhibit useful and controllable physical properties. Therefore, numerous efforts on the assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) using organic ligands, polymers and polyelectrolytes have been reported.3,4 However, the interactions between NPs are mediated by intervening ligands, which are detrimental to charge transport and limit the thermal stability. Hence, developing a new method to produce solid …

Identifying Parameters For Robust Network Growth Using Attachment Kernels: A Case Study On Directed And Undirected Networks, Ahmed F. Abdelzaher Jan 2016

Identifying Parameters For Robust Network Growth Using Attachment Kernels: A Case Study On Directed And Undirected Networks, Ahmed F. Abdelzaher

Theses and Dissertations

Network growing mechanisms are used to construct random networks that have structural behaviors similar to existing networks such as genetic networks, in efforts of understanding the evolution of complex topologies. Popular mechanisms, such as preferential attachment, are capable of preserving network features such as the degree distribution. However, little is known about such randomly grown structures regarding robustness to disturbances (e.g., edge deletions). Moreover, preferential attachment does not target optimizing the network's functionality, such as information flow. Here, we consider a network to be optimal if it's natural functionality is relatively high in addition to possessing some degree of robustness …

A Study Of The Effect Of Harvesting On A Discrete System With Two Competing Species, Rebecca G. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of the effect of harvesting on a system with two competing species. The system is a Ricker-type model that extends the work done by Luis, Elaydi, and Oliveira to include the effect of harvesting on the system. We look at the uniform bound of the system as well as the isoclines and perform a stability analysis of the equilibrium points. We also look at the effects of harvesting on the stability of the system by looking at the bifurcation of the system with respect to harvesting.

Optimal Control And Its Application To The Life-Cycle Savings Problem, Tracy A. Taylor Jan 2016

Marine species with planktonic larvae often have high spatial and temporal variation in recruitment that leads to subsequent variation in the ecology of benthic adults. Using a combination of published and unpublished data, we compared the population structure of the salt marsh snail, Littoraria irrorata, between the South Atlantic Bight and the Gulf Coast of the United States to infer geographic differences in recruitment and to test the hypothesis that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill led to widespread recruitment failure of L. irrorata in Louisiana in 2010. Size-frequency distributions in both ecoregions were bimodal, with troughs in the distributions consistent …

Interference Energy Spectrum Of The Infinite Square Well, Mordecai Waegell, Yakir Aharonov, Taylor Lee Patti Jan 2016

Interference Energy Spectrum Of The Infinite Square Well, Mordecai Waegell, Yakir Aharonov, Taylor Lee Patti

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Certain superposition states of the 1-D infinite square well have transient zeros at locations other than the nodes of the eigenstates that comprise them. It is shown that if an infinite potential barrier is suddenly raised at some or all of these zeros, the well can be split into multiple adjacent infinite square wells without affecting the wavefunction. This effects a change of the energy eigenbasis of the state to a basis that does not commute with the original, and a subsequent measurement of the energy now reveals a completely different spectrum, which we call the interference energy spectrum of …

Mathematical Frameworks For Consciousness, Menas C. Kafatos, Ashok Narasimhan Jan 2016

Mathematical Frameworks For Consciousness, Menas C. Kafatos, Ashok Narasimhan

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

If Awareness is fundamental in the universe, mathematical frameworks are better suited to reveal its fundamental aspects than physical models. Awareness operates through three fundamental laws which apply at all levels of reality and is characterized by three universal powers. We explore and summarize in general terms mathematical formalisms that may take us as close as possible to conscious awareness, beginning with the primary relationships between the observer with the observed, using a Hilbert space approach. We also examine insights from category theory, and the calculus of indications or laws of forms. Mathematical frameworks as fundamental languages of our interaction …

Hydrological Drought Analysis For Seven North Georgia Watersheds (1970-2000), Jessica L. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Drought is a prolonged reduction in precipitation which may result in significant effects on local ecosystems, watersheds, and water sources, with the potential to have negative impacts on human populations. Normalized indexes can be used to characterize drought magnitudes and frequencies using historical data records on temperature, rainfall, snowpack, soil moisture, streamflow, and/or other water supply indicators. This study examined the applicability of two drought indices: Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Streamflow Drought Index (SDI). The SPI and SDI estimate the magnitude of observed rainfall (SPI) and discharge (SDI) deviations from the longterm average. In this study, SPI and SDI …

Fuzzy Decision Tree-Based Inference System For Liver Disease Diagnosis, Himaja Sivaraju Jan 2016

Fuzzy Decision Tree-Based Inference System For Liver Disease Diagnosis, Himaja Sivaraju

Theses and Dissertations

Medical diagnosis can be challenging because of a number of factors. Uncertainty in the diagnosis process arises from inaccuracy in the measurement of patient attributes, missing attribute data and limitation in the medical expert’s ability to define cause and effect relationships when there are multiple interrelated variables. Given this situation, a decision support system, which can help doctors come up with a more reliable diagnosis, can have a lot of potential. Decision trees are used in data mining for classification and regression. They are simple to understand and interpret as they can be visualized. But, one of the disadvantages of …
