Communications Protocol For Power Management In Smart Homes, Milan Bjelica, Mirjana Simic Pejovic Jan 2017

Communications Protocol For Power Management In Smart Homes, Milan Bjelica, Mirjana Simic Pejovic

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Emergency situations, incentives for energy efficiency, new pricing plans, and distributed electricity market jointly require home automation systems that would conform an instantaneous load to a dynamically set limit. In this paper, a novel machine-to-machine communications protocol that interconnects a smart grid and smart house is described. ''Intelligent'' domestic appliances use it to coordinate their switch-on times so that the assigned power quota will not be exceeded. In this way, the end-user experience can be improved by reducing the electricity bills, conveniently conforming to prepaid pricing plans, or even by providing continued service at possibly reduced consumption levels during power …

Comparing Of Phase Shifting Method And One-Dimensional Continuous Wavelet Transform Method For Reconstruction Using Phase-Only Information, Gülhan Ustabaş Kaya, Zehra Saraç Jan 2017

Comparing Of Phase Shifting Method And One-Dimensional Continuous Wavelet Transform Method For Reconstruction Using Phase-Only Information, Gülhan Ustabaş Kaya, Zehra Saraç

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform method has some advantages in hologram reconstruction, when used in the only phase, compared with the phase shifting method. This paper aims to discuss these advantages. One advantage is related to image quality. Another advantage is less power spent and saving time, because the one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform method uses only one hologram and the phase shifting method uses four holograms for recording and reconstruction processes. One final advantage is that the one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform method can also be used in real-time applications. Within the context of the ongoing optimization studies, this study will …

Assignment As A Location-Based Service In Outsourced Databases, Ahmet Sali̇h Büyükkayhan, Taflan İmre Gündem

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Location-based services provide opportunities to organizations for tracking and utilizing their resources. Moreover, some corporations prefer to outsource their database management services. In the literature, privacy preservation techniques in outsourced spatial databases for several query types, such as nearest neighbor, K-nearest neighbor, and proximity search, have been examined. In this paper, we present an efficient application of the capacity and coverage-constrained assignment query on outsourced spatial databases. In the proposed technique, we introduce a novel spatial transformation strategy (square spiral encoding) to achieve privacy efficiently for approximate assignment query results. To process the assignment query, we use the parallel auction …

Design Of A Self-Starting Hybrid Permanent Magnet Hysteresis Synchronous Motor Connected Directly To The Grid, Mehmet Gedi̇kpinar, Ömür Aydoğmuş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this work, a permanent magnet hysteresis synchronous (PMHS) motor was designed to improve the efficiency of the system. The proposed motor is intended for pumping applications, such as submersible pump motors, fire pumps, oil-well pumps, and circulation pumps requiring high-speed operation. The efficiency of the pump system increases depending on the speed of the pump fans. The total efficiency of the pump system is reduced because the load increases exponentially in these types of application systems. The speed is important for the pumping applications in order to improve the efficiency of the pump system. Nowadays, traditional induction motors are …

Research On Magnetic Field State Analysis Of A Nonsalient Pole Synchronous Generator, Baojun Ge, Pin Lv, Dajun Tao, Fang Xiao, Hongsen Zhao

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper is based on the definition of minor asymmetric degree and the relative position of the magnetic field. The relative position of the magnetic field is the angle between the positive and negative sequence magnetic fields. The corresponding relationship between the nonsalient pole synchronous generator steady performance and the magnetic field state is discussed when the generator operates at minor asymmetry. To analyze this corresponding relationship, the Taylor expansion formula with Lagrange remainder and symmetrical components is adopted. We study the relationship between the armature current and the relative position of the magnetic field, deducing the armature current expressions …

Ionolab-Ray: A Wave Propagation Algorithm For Anisotropic And Inhomogeneous Ionosphere, Esra Erdem, Feza Arikan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A high-frequency (HF) radio wave propagation model based on ray tracing for anisotropic, inhomogeneous, and time-varying ionosphere is developed to form the basis for a user-friendly modular algorithm. The algorithm IONOLAB-RAY applies the principles of ray tracing through the spherical 3D grid model of the ionosphere. The physical parameters of the ionosphere in each voxel are obtained from the ionosphere model IRI-Plas-G. The refractive index of each voxel is calculated with the Appleton-Hartree formula, which includes electron cyclotron frequency, collision frequency, and anisotropicity due to the geomagnetic field. The developed propagation algorithm allows the input of total electron content (TEC) …

Using Latent Semantic Analysis For Automated Keyword Extraction From Large Document Corpora, Tuğba Önal Süzek Jan 2017

Using Latent Semantic Analysis For Automated Keyword Extraction From Large Document Corpora, Tuğba Önal Süzek

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, we describe a keyword extraction technique that uses latent semantic analysis (LSA) to identify semantically important single topic words or keywords. We compare our method against two other automated keyword extractors, Tf-idf (term frequency-inverse document frequency) and Metamap, using human-annotated keywords as a reference. Our results suggest that the LSA-based keyword extraction method performs comparably to the other techniques. Therefore, in an incremental update setting, the LSA-based keyword extraction method can be preferably used to extract keywords from text descriptions from big data when compared to existing keyword extraction methods.

Optimal Design Of Voltage Regulators For Static Excitation System In Synchronous Generator To Reduce Shaft-Induced Voltage, Mahmoud Samieimoghaddam, Mohammad Tavakoli Bina, Masoud Aliakbar Golkar, Shokrollah Shokrikojoori

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Long-term shaft-induced voltage could harm synchronous generators, specifically their bearings and insulators. This paper investigates the reduction of shaft-induced voltage using both a passive filter and an active voltage regulator. An RLC circuit is used as a passive filter, and a DC-DC buck converter is used as an active voltage regulator. As a result, they remove high-frequency spikes, leading to the reduction of shaft-induced voltage. Buck converters show minimum-phase behavior and can pose as stable-casual converters. A 5 kW synchronous generator was considered for the laboratory setup in which a static excitation system using a 6-pulse thyristor rectifier supplies the …

Optimum Design And Operation Analysis Of Permanent Magnet-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor, Jamal Dehghani Ashkezari, Hassan Khajeroshanaee, Mohsen Niasati, Mohammad Jafar Mojibian

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents an optimum design process and operational analysis of a permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMASynRM) as a low-cost and highly efficient consumed magnet material machine. The motor's topology is based on inserting partial permanent magnetic materials into flux barriers of an original synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) that implicitly increase the difference between the machine's inductances, thereby increasing output torque. The procedure of rotor design as the main contribution of this paper is carefully illustrated. The rectangular shape of the flux barriers was found to achieve cost reduction and improve productivity. The impact of the permanent magnet added …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes a design of a low-power operational amplifier (op-amp) for pipeline analog-to-digital converter (ADC) applications using a 0.13-$\mu $m CMOS process. The folded-cascode topology with NMOS input types is employed for the op-amp design due to a larger output gain compared to PMOS input types. Furthermore, the op-amp is designed with a double detection structure of a common-mode feedback circuit to provide stable feedback voltage. The simulation results show that the proposed op-amp achieved a gain of 64.5 dB and a unity gain bandwidth of 695.1 MHz with a low power consumption of 0.14 mW. In addition, by …

High-Pass/Low-Pass Section Design For 0$^{\Circ}$-360$^{\Circ}$ Lumped-Element Phase Shifters Via The Real Frequency Technique, Meti̇n Şengül

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, an algorithm based on the real frequency technique (RFT) is proposed to design high-pass and low-pass sections of a 0$^{\circ}$-360$^{\circ}$ wide range lumped-element phase shifter. The switching process, however, is not considered in this work. In the algorithm, it is enough to define the section type (high-pass or low-pass) and the number of elements in the sections; there is no need to select the exact circuit topologies for the high-pass and low-pass sections. This is a natural consequence of the proposed approach. Unlike in the methods described in the literature, there is also no need to derive …

Intrusion Detection In Network Flows Based On An Optimized Clustering Criterion, Jaber Karimpour, Shahriar Lotfi, Aliakbar Tajari Siahmarzkooh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Graph-based intrusion detection approaches consider the network as a graph and detect anomalies based on graph metrics. However, most of these approaches succumb to the cluster-based behavior of the anomalies. To resolve this problem in our study, we use flow and graph-clustering concepts to create a data set first. A new criterion related to the average weight of clusters is then defined and a model is proposed to detect attacks based on the above-mentioned criterion. Finally, the model is evaluated using a DARPA data set. Results show that the proposed approach detects the attacks with high accuracy relative to methods …

Femtocell networks are one of the proposed solutions that support high data rates as well as better indoor coverage without imposing heavy costs to network providers. However, interference management is a challenging issue in femtocell networks, mainly due to dense and random deployment of femto access points (FAPs). Therefore, distinct radio resource management (RRM) methods are employed to ensure acceptable levels of call dropping/blocking probability …

A Hybrid Of Sliding Mode Control And Fuzzy Logic Control Using A Fuzzy Supervisory Switched System For Dc Motor Speed Control, Husain Ahmed, Abha Rajoriya Jan 2017

A Hybrid Of Sliding Mode Control And Fuzzy Logic Control Using A Fuzzy Supervisory Switched System For Dc Motor Speed Control, Husain Ahmed, Abha Rajoriya

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In many applications of DC motor speed control systems, PID controllers are mostly used. Such control schemes do not show good performance when input and load torque disturbances are applied. This paper shows that sliding mode (SM) can give better control due to its robust property but it has an unwanted chattering problem associated with it, which is harmful to the plant. To limit this problem a hybrid controller is presented in which a fuzzy controller is combined with the SM controller by a fuzzy supervisory system in such a way that the SM controller works in transient state and …

Reconstruction Of A Single Square Pulse Originally Having 40 Ps Width Coming From A Lossy And Noisy Channel In A Point To Point Interconnect, Alak Majumder, Bidyut Bhattacharyya

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The fundamental problem in high speed communication is that it suffers a lot of signal integrity issues due to dispersion (caused by dielectric variation with angular frequency), reflection (S$_{11})$, and insertion losses (S$_{12})$ of the channel made of copper. When a pulse width $\tau $ with magnitude V$_{0}$ is driven through a lossy channel, we observe a reduction in magnitude (due to S$_{12}$ and S$_{11})$ and an increase in pulse width (due to dispersion). It causes different values of skin effect and dielectric loss leading to different effective resistance at each segment as the pulse moves through the channel. This …

Dielectric Backed Conducting Strips As Inductive Element In Spatial Band-Pass Filter Design, Habib Ghorbaninejad, Ali Ghajar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper a new method has been presented to design spatial band-pass filters consisting of dielectric backed conducting strips. This approach uses an equivalent circuit model in which determined inductive elements are spaced at intervals about half wavelength. To realize the proposed method, the inductive elements have been replaced by dielectric backed conducting strips located at intervals about half wavelength. Half wavelength transmission line sections act as resonators. In this manner the wideness and spacing of strips in each dielectric backed conducting strip, as well as the distance between them, is determined by fitting the characteristic (transfer function) of …
