Designing A Microfluidic Sorting Network With Heat Treated Plastic, Houghton Yonge '18, Fuming Qui '19, Viva R. Horowitz

Posters

A microfluidic device is necessary to sort nanodiamonds based on their luminescence. We explored utilizing the repeatable shrinkage of heat treated Shrinky Dink (polystyrene) sheets in an effort to find an easier, cheaper alternative to the traditional photolithography process. Our work found encouraging results but the plastic’s capabilities must be further studied to decisively determine its usefulness.

Direct Computations Of Marangoni Driven Flows Using A Volume Of Fluid Method, Ivana Seric Aug 2017

Direct Computations Of Marangoni Driven Flows Using A Volume Of Fluid Method, Ivana Seric

Dissertations

The volume of fluid (VoF) interface tracking methods have been used for simulating a wide range of interfacial flows. An improved accuracy of the surface tension force computation has enabled the VoF method to become widely used for simulating flows driven by the surface tension force. A general methodology for the inclusion of variable surface tension coefficient into a VoF based Navier-Stokes solver is developed. This new numerical model provides a robust and accurate method for computing the surface gradients directly by finding the tangent directions on the interface using height functions. The implementation applies to both temperature and concentration …

During the Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Project observations of NGC 5548, the continuum and emission-line variability became decorrelated during the second half of the six-month-long observing campaign. Here we present Swift and Chandra X-ray spectra of NGC 5548 obtained as part of the campaign. The Swift spectra show that excess flux (relative to a power-law continuum) in the soft X-ray band appears before the start of the anomalous emission-line behavior, peaks during the period of the anomaly, and then declines. This is a model-independent result suggesting that the soft excess is related to the anomaly. We divide the …

Eikonal+ Training And Simulation Platform: Enabling A New Generation Of Optical Systems, Daniel K. Nikolov

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

The year of 2016 was proclaimed by many to be the year of virtual/augmented reality [Forbes]. The public attention was captured by the idea of wearable and immersive devices that can be used for communication, training, simulation and much more. However, the realization of such AR/VR displays has been staggered due to limitation of the optical/light engine of those devices. Furthermore, head-worn displays are only one example of a new generation of optical systems that require non-traditional technologies to achieve high optical performance, in a compact and light form factor. The development of these technologies requires a new set of …

Vertical And Cross-Shore Distributions Of Barnacle Larvae In La Jolla, Ca Nearshore Waters: Implications For Larval Transport Processes, Malloree Lynn Hagerty Aug 2017

Vertical And Cross-Shore Distributions Of Barnacle Larvae In La Jolla, Ca Nearshore Waters: Implications For Larval Transport Processes, Malloree Lynn Hagerty

Theses

Many marine organisms begin their lives as tiny larvae that are at the mercy of ocean currents. Understanding the transport and subsequent dispersal of larvae is crucial, as it drives population connectivity in the ocean. Larval transport is a complex process involving both physical motions of the water and larval behavior. Vertical positioning is especially important because currents vary throughout the water column, and larvae at different depths will be advected differently. With swimming speeds insufficient to swim against currents, marine larvae can mediate cross-shore transport by controlling their depth distributions. Thus, the overall objective of this study was to …

Eu ions have been doped into GaN in order to achieve red luminescence under current injection, where coupling between the Eu ions and intrinsic defects such as vacancies are known to play an important role. However, the charge state of the vacancies and the impact it would have on the optical and magnetic properties of the Eu ions have not been explored. Through a combination of first-principle calculations and experimental results, the influence of the charge state of the defect environment surrounding the Eu ions has been investigated. We have identified two Eu centers that are related through the charge …

Effect Of Observational Cadence On Orbit Determination For Synthetic Near-Earth Objects, Thomas G. Endicott Aug 2017

Effect Of Observational Cadence On Orbit Determination For Synthetic Near-Earth Objects, Thomas G. Endicott

Graduate Masters Theses

Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) are generally small, dark, and fast-moving. Multiple observations over time are necessary to constrain NEO orbits. Orbits based on observational data are inherently uncertain. Here we describe code written in Python and Fortran used to generate synthetic asteroids and compare calculated orbital fit based on noisy ephemeris using the a distance criteria, D-value. Observational sessions separated by more than one month produce very good orbital fits (low D-values) even at the highest noise level. Daily observational sessions show the highest D-values, as expected, since observed points on the orbital ellipse are not well separated. D-value is closely …

Hopping Conductivity Of Electron Glass, Mingzhu Cui Aug 2017

Hopping Conductivity Of Electron Glass, Mingzhu Cui

Graduate Masters Theses

Hopping conductance between the sites in disordered systems is mapped to a random resistor network named Miller-Abrahams network. The conductance between two sites is in an exponential form depending on two parameters, the space separation and energy separation between sites. Our effort is focused on the visualization of the random resistor network. We find all the realizations for one electron hop and plot out the according random resistor networks. By comparing the random resistor network structures, we find that Coulomb interaction plays an important role in calculating the hopping conductance between sites. Furthermore, we rank the realizations by total energy …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations On Gas-Phase Proteins With Mobile Protons: Inclusion Of All-Atom Charge Solvation., Lars Konermann

Chemistry Publications

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have become a key tool for examining the properties of electrosprayed protein ions. Traditional force fields employ static charges on titratable sites, whereas in reality, protons are highly mobile in gas-phase proteins. Earlier studies tackled this problem by adjusting charge patterns during MD runs. Within those algorithms, proton redistribution was subject to energy minimization, taking into account electrostatic and proton affinity contributions. However, those earlier approaches described (de)protonated moieties as point charges, neglecting charge solvation, which is highly prevalent in the gas phase. Here, we describe a mobile proton algorithm that considers the electrostatic contributions from …

Matrix Completion Algorithms With Applications In Biomedicine, E-Commerce And Social Science, Yiran Wang

Theses

This thesis investigates matrix completion algorithms with applications in biomedicine, e-commerce and social science. In general, matrix completion algorithms work well for low rank matrices. Such matrices find many applications in recommender systems and social network analysis. On the other hand, biological networks often yield high rank matrices. For example, the adjacency matrix representing interactions between transcription factors and target genes in the cell is a highly sparse matrix, in which most entries correspond to absent interactions and only a few entries correspond to present interactions. This sparse matrix is a high rank or even full rank matrix. Matrix completion …

A researcher trying to develop a conscious artificial intelligence or examine consciousness in plants would be completely unable to do so without first obtaining a clear, concise, and global definition. This idea is what originally inspired my research. The main method of research to be used will be to thoroughly examine scholarly articles pertaining to consciousness and different theories of the mind. After gathering data and different ideas, I will create a definition that is plausible, and is optimized in terms of being useful to researchers. Currently, the issue is that there are an incredible amount of mental features that …
