Gaslight: A Comprehensive Fuzzing Architecture For Memory Forensics Frameworks, Andrew Case, Arghya Kusum Das, Seung Jong Park, J. (Ram) Ramanujam, Golden G. Richard
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Memory forensics is now a standard component of digital forensic investigations and incident response handling, since memory forensic techniques are quite effective in uncovering artifacts that might be missed by traditional storage forensics or live analysis techniques. Because of the crucial role that memory forensics plays in investigations and because of the increasing use of automation of memory forensics techniques, it is imperative that these tools be resilient to memory smear and deliberate tampering. Without robust algorithms, malware may go undetected, frameworks may crash when attempting to process memory samples, and automation of memory forensics techniques is difficult. In this …
Speech Processing Approach For Diagnosing Dementia In An Early Stage, Roozbeh Sadeghian, J. David Schaffer, Stephen A. Zahorian
Speech Processing Approach For Diagnosing Dementia In An Early Stage, Roozbeh Sadeghian, J. David Schaffer, Stephen A. Zahorian
Faculty Works
The clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is very challenging, especially in the early stages. Our hypothesis is that any disease that affects particular brain regions involved in speech production and processing will also leave detectable finger prints in the speech. Computerized analysis of speech signals and computational linguistics have progressed to the point where an automatic speech analysis system is a promising approach for a low-cost non-invasive diagnostic tool for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.
We present empirical evidence that strong discrimination between subjects with a diagnosis of probable Alzheimer’s versus matched normal controls can be achieved …
Extensions Of Enveloping Algebras Via Anti-Cocommutative Elements, Daniel Owen Yee
Extensions Of Enveloping Algebras Via Anti-Cocommutative Elements, Daniel Owen Yee
Theses and Dissertations
We know that given a connected Hopf algebra H, the universal enveloping algebra
U(P(H)) embeds in H as a Hopf subalgebra. Depending on P(H), we show that
there may be another enveloping algebra (not as a Hopf subalgebra) within H by
using anti-cocommutative elements. Thus, this is an extension of enveloping
algebras with regards to the Hopf structure. We also use these discoveries to apply
to global dimension, and finish with antipode behavior and future research projects.
Exponential Integrator Methods For Nonlinear Fractional Reaction-Diffusion Models, Olaniyi Samuel Iyiola
Exponential Integrator Methods For Nonlinear Fractional Reaction-Diffusion Models, Olaniyi Samuel Iyiola
Theses and Dissertations
Nonlocality and spatial heterogeneity of many practical systems have made fractional differential equations very useful tools in Science and Engineering. However, solving these type of models is computationally demanding. In this work, we propose an exponential integrator method for nonlinear fractional reaction-diffusion equations. This scheme is based on using a real distinct poles discretization for the underlying matrix exponentials. Due to these real distinct poles, the algorithm could be easily implemented in parallel to take advantage of multiple processors for increased computational efficiency. The method is established to be second-order convergent; and proven to be robust for problems involving non-smooth/mismatched …
Difference Structures From Time-Resolved Saxs/Waxs, Prakash Nepal
Difference Structures From Time-Resolved Saxs/Waxs, Prakash Nepal
Theses and Dissertations
It has been thought that there is not enough information to recover a solution to the problem of inverting time-resolved Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) / Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS) difference data. In this context, this study presents a new idea by extending the concept of “difference Fourier method” which aims to overcome the above limitation in the idealized case of simulated data.
If the structural changes in a typical time-resolved studies are generally confined to a relatively localized region, they can be found from difference SAXS/WAXS curves and knowledge of the atomic coordinates of one of the states. …
Using Ams To Help Interpret Glaciogenic Deposits Of The Late Paleozoic Ice Age In The Paraná Basin, Brazil, James Anthony Amato
Using Ams To Help Interpret Glaciogenic Deposits Of The Late Paleozoic Ice Age In The Paraná Basin, Brazil, James Anthony Amato
Theses and Dissertations
The term ‘diamictite’ is used as a lithologic descriptive term without assigning a particular origin to a rock unit as either glacial deposits (till), proglacial, glacially influenced deposits (resulting from meltwater plumes and ice rafted debris), or mass transport deposits (glacial or non-glacial related). While in some cases, it is possible to delineate between the origins of diamictites, in other instances, weathering and lack of exposures make it difficult to determine. In general, the occurrence of diamictites within the Gondwana succession has been traditionally used to indicate the occurrence of subglacial deposition despite the potential occurrence of other depositional modes. …
Biomedical Applications Of Mid-Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging And Multivariate Data Analysis: Contribution To The Understanding Of Diabetes Pathogenesis, Ebrahim Aboualizadeh
Biomedical Applications Of Mid-Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging And Multivariate Data Analysis: Contribution To The Understanding Of Diabetes Pathogenesis, Ebrahim Aboualizadeh
Theses and Dissertations
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of diabetes and a leading cause of adult vision loss. Although a great deal of progress has been made in ophthalmological examinations and clinical approaches to detect the signs of retinopathy in patients with diabetes, there still remain outstanding questions regarding the molecular and biochemical changes involved. To discover the biochemical mechanisms underlying the development and progression of changes in the retina as a result of diabetes, a more comprehensive understanding of the bio-molecular processes, in individual retinal cells subjected to hyperglycemia, is required. Animal models provide a suitable resource for temporal detection …

We use a simple method which leads to the quadrature involved in obtaining the traveling wave solutions of wave equations with one and two exponential nonlinearities. When the constant term in the integrand is zero, implicit solutions in terms of hypergeometric functions are obtained while when that term is nonzero we give all the basic traveling wave solutions based on a detailed study of the corresponding elliptic equations of several well-known particular cases with important applications in physics.
Soil Ecosystem Service Tradeoffs And Social-Ecological Resilience In The North Central Great Plains, Hannah E. Birge
Soil Ecosystem Service Tradeoffs And Social-Ecological Resilience In The North Central Great Plains, Hannah E. Birge
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Humans seek to improve their wellbeing by altering ecological processes to maximize the output of specific ecosystem services, which often leave the system vulnerable to unintended and undesirable side effects. Ecosystem services emerge from complex interactions among ecological structures and processes occurring at multiple scales. The degree to which an ecosystem maintains a predictable range of structures and processes in the face of disturbance can be described as its resilience. The 1930s Dust Bowl of the North American Great Plains is an example of a system reconfiguration and loss of resilience that was ultimately driven by human optimization for a …

The Annotation Cost Of Context Switching: How Topic Models And Active Learning [May Not] Work Together, Nozomu Okuda
The Annotation Cost Of Context Switching: How Topic Models And Active Learning [May Not] Work Together, Nozomu Okuda
Theses and Dissertations
The labeling of language resources is a time consuming task, whether aided by machine learning or not. Much of the prior work in this area has focused on accelerating human annotation in the context of machine learning, yielding a variety of active learning approaches. Most of these attempt to lead an annotator to label the items which are most likely to improve the quality of an automated, machine learning-based model. These active learning approaches seek to understand the effect of item selection on the machine learning model, but give significantly less emphasis to the effect of item selection on the …
Analysis Of Differential Equations Applications From The Coordination Class Perspective, Omar Antonio Naranjo Mayorga
Analysis Of Differential Equations Applications From The Coordination Class Perspective, Omar Antonio Naranjo Mayorga
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years there has been an increasing interest in mathematics teaching and learning at undergraduate level. However, many fields are little explored; differential equations being one of these topics. In this study I use the theoretical framework of Coordination Classes to analyze how undergraduate mechanical engineering students apply their knowledge in the context of system dynamics and what resources and strategies they used; in this subject, students model dynamics systems based on Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). I applied three tasks in different contexts (Mechanical, Electrical and Fluid Systems) in order to identify what information was relevant for the students, …
Advancements In The Understanding Of Nonlinear Optics And Their Use In Material Analysis, Shawn C. Averett
Advancements In The Understanding Of Nonlinear Optics And Their Use In Material Analysis, Shawn C. Averett
Theses and Dissertations
Adhesion, heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry, and many other important processes and properties are driven by interactions at surfaces and interfaces. Vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy (VSFG) is an increasingly popular analytical technique because it can provide information about the nature and physical orientation of functional groups at these surfaces and interfaces. Analysis of VSFG data can be complicated by the presence of SFG signal that is not associated with a resonant vibration. This nonresonant sum frequency generation (NR-SFG) signal can interfere with the resonant signal and influence the detected spectrum. Methods have been developed to remove NR-SFG signal; however, these methods …
Neural Image And Video Understanding, Rasool Fakoor
Neural Image And Video Understanding, Rasool Fakoor
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations
Even though recent works on neural architectures have shown promising results at tasks like image recognition, object detection, playing Atari games, etc., learning a mapping from a visual space to a language space or vice versa remains challenging in problems like image/video captioning or question-answering tasks. Furthermore, transferring knowledge between seen and unseen classes in a setting like zero-shot learning is quite challenging given the fact that a model should be able to make a prediction for novel test data belonging to classes for which no examples have been seen during training. To address these issues, this dissertation will first …

Stateful Detection Of Stealthy Behaviors In Android Apps, Mohsin Junaid
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations
The number of smartphones has increased greatly during the last few years. Among the popular mobile operating systems (such as iOS and Android) installed on these devices, Android captures most of the mobile market share. This also puts Android OS in a spotlight to attract malware attacks. A recent study shows that for the last two years, more than ~99% of the mobile malware targeted Android OS. Examples of such attacks are leakage of privacy-sensitive data available on the devices (such as phone number, contacts, photos, and SMS and call logs), recording audio and video files, silently making phone calls …
Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus) As A Functional Link Between Marine And Freshwater Ecosystems, Daniel M. Weaver
Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus) As A Functional Link Between Marine And Freshwater Ecosystems, Daniel M. Weaver
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Anadromous sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus are native to Atlantic coastal systems and serve as a functional link between marine and freshwater ecosystems. Sea lamprey spend 1–2 years in the ocean parasitizing marine vertebrates before migrating into freshwaters during the spring to spawn. There they construct nests, spawn, then die shortly afterwards. Larvae hatch, bury into fine sediments and reside in streams for generally 6–8 years, but up to 14. Larvae then undergo metamorphosis, a non-feeding period characterized by a series of physical and physiological changes. The juveniles (macropthalmia) then migrate to the ocean to begin the parasitic juvenile phase.

The Effects Of E-Cigarette Exposure On Cell Viability And Gene Expression, Christine Hale
The Effects Of E-Cigarette Exposure On Cell Viability And Gene Expression, Christine Hale
Honors Theses
Marketed as a safer alternative to tobacco products, the popularity of e-cigarette use is on the rise. However, little is known about the potential health risks associated with their use. Many e-cigarette filling solutions are known to contain significant levels of tobacco alkaloids, including nicotine, anabasine, myosmine and cotinine. Using a panel of lung cell cultures distinguished by differences in sex and disease status, this study addresses the in vitro effects of common tobacco alkaloids found in e-cigarettes on cell proliferation and gene expression. We hypothesize that alkaloid exposure of lung cells is associated with abnormal proliferation and gene expression, …
Octahedral Ruthenium(Ii) Complexes For C-H Bond Activation And Olefin Hydroarylation, Patrick Z. Zdunek
Octahedral Ruthenium(Ii) Complexes For C-H Bond Activation And Olefin Hydroarylation, Patrick Z. Zdunek
Honors Theses
The study of inert C-H bond activation of hydrocarbons has been gaining interest. As these hydrocarbons are used in the production of many consumables such as fuel, plastics, and detergents, it is necessary to efficiently utilize the finite quantity of petroleum feedstocks. Transition metal complexes are incorporated as catalysts into synthetic routes to create new C-X (X = C, N, O) bonds in order to increase the chemical value of organic molecules. The complex [Ru(η6-p-cymene){P(OCH2CF3)3}(Ph)(OTf)] (1) (P{OCH2CF3}3 = tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphite, Ph = phenyl, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) was prepared and tested for functionality as a catalyst in olefin hydroarylation. Catalytic reactions …

Drifts, Currents, And Power Scrape-Off Width In Solps-Iter Modeling Of Diii-D, E. T. Meier, R. J. Goldston, E. G. Kaveeva, M. A. Makowski, S. Mordijck
Arts & Sciences Articles
The effects of drifts and associated flows and currents on the width of the parallel heat flux channel (lambda(q)) in the tokamak scrape-offlayer (SOL) are analyzed using the SOLPS-ITER 2D fluid transport code. Motivation is supplied by Goldston's heuristic drift (HD) model for lambda(q), which yields the same approximately inverse poloidal magnetic field dependence seen in multi-machine regression. The analysis, focusing on a DIII-D H-mode discharge, reveals HD-like features, including comparable density and temperature fall-off lengths in the SOL, and up-down ion pressure asymmetry that allows net cross-separatrix ion magnetic drift flux to exceed net anomalous ion flux. In experimentally …

Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a group of crystalline and highly porous materials consisting of inorganic metal ions/clusters (nodes) that are coordinated by organic linkers. The ability to create a wide range of porous structures, where the pore size can be easily changed in size and shape offers the potential for many applications in gas storage/separation and catalysis. The presence of the organic linkers or “struts” in the sample creates challenges for high resolution microscopy as the sample itself is very sensitive to beam damage. A key challenge for understanding the structures of MOFs and how the applications can be modified …
Vertex Weighted Spectral Clustering, Mohammad Masum
Vertex Weighted Spectral Clustering, Mohammad Masum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spectral clustering is often used to partition a data set into a specified number of clusters. Both the unweighted and the vertex-weighted approaches use eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix of a graph. Our focus is on using vertex-weighted methods to refine clustering of observations. An eigenvector corresponding with the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of a graph is called a Fiedler vector. Coefficients of a Fiedler vector are used to partition vertices of a given graph into two clusters. A vertex of a graph is classified as unassociated if the Fiedler coefficient of the vertex is close to …
A Novel Method For Synthesis Of Hydroxytyrosol, Emmanuel Onobun
A Novel Method For Synthesis Of Hydroxytyrosol, Emmanuel Onobun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hydroxytyrosol, 3,4-dihydroxyphenolethanol, a naturally occurring polyphenol most common in olive tree (Olea europaea), is one of the most effective member of the polyphenols family, because of its remarkable antioxidant activity, its ability to inhibit oxidation of low density lipids (LDL), and its protection against DNA oxidative damage. Hydroxytyrosol, which is widely used in cosmetics and food supplements industries, can be purchased as an olive oil extract that contains low concentration of hydroxytyrosol besides other polyphenols. The price and low natural abundance of hydroxytyrosol make alternative synthetic sources very attractive. In this research, a novel method for the synthesis of pure …

Theory Of Retrieving Orientation-Resolved Molecular Information Using Time-Domain Rotational Coherence Spectroscopy, Xu Wang, Anh-Thu Le, Zhaoyan Zhou, Hui Wei, C. D. Lin
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We provide a unified theoretical framework for recently emerging experiments that retrieve fixed-in-space molecular information through time-domain rotational coherence spectroscopy. Unlike a previous approach by Makhija et al. (V. Makhija, arXiv:1611.06476), our method can be applied to the retrieval of both real-valued (e.g., ionization yield) and complex-valued (e.g., induced dipole moment) molecular response information. It is also a direct retrieval method without using iterations. We also demonstrate that experimental parameters, such as the fluence of the aligning laser pulse and the rotational temperature of the molecular ensemble, can be quite accurately determined using a statistical method.

Inverse Design Of Perfectly Transmitting Eigenchannels In Scattering Media, Milan Koirala, Raktim Sarma, Hui Cao, Alexey Yamilov
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Light-matter interactions inside a turbid medium can be controlled by tailoring the spatial distribution of energy density throughout the system. Wavefront shaping allows selective coupling of incident light to different transmission eigenchannels, producing dramatically different spatial intensity profiles. In contrast to the density of transmission eigenvalues that is dictated by the universal bimodal distribution, the spatial structures of the eigenchannels are not universal and depend on the confinement geometry of the system. Here, we develop and verify a model for the transmission eigenchannel with the corresponding eigenvalue close to unity. By projecting the original problem of two-dimensional diffusion in a …

Marine inundation associated with the 5 to 8 m storm surge of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 left overwash sediments inland on the coastal plains of the northwestern shores of Leyte Gulf, Philippines. The Haiyan overwash deposit provides a modern sedimentary record of storm surge deposition from a Category 5 landfalling typhoon. We studied overwash sediments at two locations that experienced similar storm surge conditions but represent contrasting sedimentological regimes, namely a siliciclastic coast and a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate coast. The contrasting local geology is significantly reflected in the differences in sediment grain size, composition and sorting at the two sites. The …
